    Caldo De Res
    Victor R.

Was craving Caldo de Res after a long night of drinking through New Years and found this spot. The place was a hold in the wall but the food was outstanding. The Caldo was excellent, great flavor tacos and The Huaraches were to die for. If you are in the area and craving mexican food go ahead and stop by.

Halfway done wishing I had ordered 2 at this point

10 out of the 11 tables were full as I walked into this quaint restaurant, which was a good sign to start. The cashier, who was also acting as the server, was friendly and greeted me with a genuine "hola". He used Spanish and English while I ordered my food which made me feel included. I ordered a chicken sope. They used thinly sliced pieces of grilled chicken and freshly torn iceberg lettuce. The sope was medium sized so I really could have ordered 2 of them. The 1 sope I ate was delicious. I nearly cleaned my plate .... ok, I did clean my plate. I had a cup of coffee with my sope and I could tell that it was freshly brewed. My experience here on this rainy day was a good one. I will be back to try more menu items for sure. The only negative was that I didn't get chips and salsa on my table like other tables. Maybe you have to expressly order them. I'll know for sure on my next visit.

Omg. What a difference a week makes. Was craving the beef soup again so stopped by on a Friday night around 8. No soup today. Damn, but ok. So I ordered some dish that the waitress said was "kinda like fajitas." She didn't seem very familiar with the menu. Strike one. Anyway I said I'd like the vegetarian version that was listed. So about 20 minutes later the dish arrives. See the pic. I say, "I ordered the vegetarian version." She says,"does that have meat?" This dish had bacon, beef, ham and I don't know what other meat. Duh! Yes it has meat!! And then, "is that pineapple in there?". I said, "I don't know!" So I tasted it and confirmed for her, yes it is pineapple. Not sure why that was relevant. Anyway she goes to the back and I see them checking the order she comes back and says, "they didn't understand what I wrote, so do you want the one with just the vegetables?" I just left. I can't make this up.

Recently opened, sometime in second half of 2011. Kind of small and simple up front. Everything is clean and new. Menu is pretty much standard Mexican: tacos, tortas, etc. But the menu is not extensive with tons of combinations that you often see elsewhere, just the basics. They serve breakfast. I was there for a late lunch on a weekday, and there were several other tables still occupied. My beef torta (sandwich) was large, and fresh, and the diced meat cooked just right. Bilingual waitress. Very good service. I think they are aiming for a Mexican clientele, but the menu, presentation, and service are also acceptable for what the average gringo would expect. IE, they're authentic, plus covering all the bases. I was impressed for a first visit. Open until 10 pm weeknights.

The service was a bit slow but it being cinco de mayo, we understood that things may move a little slower than any other day. They had some specials for the day but I got my old faithful, Maria's Enchiladas with steak. It comes with rice and beans and it's just so so soooo good!!! I also got the Arroyo Margarita which was good but def could tell they were adding a bit more sour mix to the drink. Overall, it was a good experience but I will try to come back again on a day that is not as busy.

Even with the rush, I was able to snag a seat quite quickly. I was so impressed by how efficiently the staff cleared and prepared my table; it's those little touches of attentiveness that really make a difference. The staff was also incredibly accommodating when it came to my preferences; they brought over a lovely selection of chips and sauces, but were perfectly gracious when I mentioned I prefer to avoid the heat. The restaurant is sleek and has a cool vibe, but we immediately realized it was not going to be what we thought of when we saw "street tacos" mentioned during Google search. It's more of a metropolitan American Soul fusion place, with a heavy emphasis on loaded, uniquely flavored tacos instead of traditional Mexicana. The server was wonderful in explaining their menu and gave multiple recommendations, which I went with all of her great suggestions once I told her what I was craving. My husband didn't enjoy his appetizer, saying it tasted too sweet instead of savory for him, but the server was great at being aware of our plates and took the appetizer off our bill when she noticed he wasn't eating it without us even mentioning it. I got three different tacos, and the only one I didn't enjoy was due to the Mac n cheese that was stuffed in it. It just didn't taste or feel right having a taco with macaroni that was pushed in so densely that it became a sponge. The other two were great! My husband gave his burrito a 3/5, as he felt it was too much one note. Overall, don't come here if you're looking for upscale Mexicana, but instead want to enjoy interesting fusion flavors and fun cocktails. Great place for a group outing or celebration!

Then again, it's not an uncommon story unfortunately- large parts of the city forgotten in terms of economic development but then suddenly needed during times of campaigning. Had taken Keystone and then Rural Street to get here, and the potholes are not kind. But, we had this place on our list and were determined to make it here at least once. Tlaolli stood out for its vegan offerings. Plenty of vegan taco options, birria (an absolute rarity to see vegan birria), and torta. They offer soy chorizo, jackfruit, and king oyster mushrooms as protein options. The exterior is colorful, and inside there are seating options. We had gotten our food to go, so I cannot comment too much on the service. Had placed our order online, and the food was ready within the estimated time in the order. We ordered the vegan birria tacos ($17.99), the vegan torta ($10.99 base but added soy chorizo, which was $3.99), and the no-no-no taco ($5.99). Our total with fees was approximately $45. Tlaolli offers outdoor seating, so when the weather is nicer this would be a good place to come. Next to the East Washington IPL branch, Tlaolli has a colorful green exterior with neon signage. Food: The food was very good. The proteins were nicely seasoned and juicy. The highlight for me was the birria tacos and the consome. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. 10/10.
