Very honest and trustworthy! I went to Apna Garage thinking I would need to have some parts replaced for the power steering in my car. It turns out that I just needed to have a hose tightened; they did this free of charge and said to come back if I had any future problems. A month later, my car still sounds great. I found my new mechanic, and this dude cracks me up! Haha. Moving to Atlanta for the first time, I've obviously had to find everything new. From vets to grocery stores to even friends, I've had to practically start my life all over. So when my car felt a little rough when driving over those terrible metal plates that serve as an alternative to filling in potholes, I thought my shocks didn't work anymore. I looked for highly-rated auto shops in the Atlanta metro and decided to drop by Apna. I mean, 38 reviews with a five star average? That's impressive, and it's totally worth the twenty-minute drive from Midtown. It's my car, after all. My experience: LOCATION: Apna is a hideaway tucked in the back of a building that sells Bollywood movies and on the side of the Waffle House. ABOUT APNA: It's a one-man operation held down by Jay. (Not sure how to spell his name.) One garage only exists, and he does everything. WHY I CAME: I explained the situation to Jay. He then asked if he could take the car for a ride with me. We drove around the parking lot, and around the neighborhood, and he determined that my shocks were fine. HIS DIAGNOSIS: He measured the pressure in all of my tires, and found that they all fell 15 PSI aboe what they should've been. Unfortunately, I filled up my tires at a gas station the week before, and it read incorrectly. He jokingly said, "at least all the tires are equally over-inflated." Haha. But seriously, without him, I could've had a tire pop and been in an accident. PRICE: He did everything for free and even gave me a complimentary tire gauge. What a great guy! OVERALL: I'm not giving him a five-star rating, because he gave me a free assessment or tire gauge. I'm giving him five-stars, because he's honest and not looking to hustle his customers. Back in Minnesota, I brought my car to a Honda dealership for over five years to get it serviced, and each time they ripped me off. (I found out I was being ripped off, from a family friend.) This definitely counts as the best experience that I've had with car repair after owning a few vehicles over the years. I took my car to Jay after all of the glowing recommendations on Yelp and was NOT disappointed. He's extremely efficient and educates you about what is going on with your car. I desperately needed to have my brakes repaired and didn't know if it was the rear, front or both. Jay took apart all four brakes and examined them and found that it was the rear. He never tried to upsell on unnecessary service or talk down to me. As a matter of fact, he had me laughing with all of the knowledge and humor he bestowed on me about the evolution of brakes. I called to ask about a noise my car was making that I believed to be the alternator. He told me to come by in a couple of hours once his schedule cleared up some. There, he quickly diagnosed it and showed me everything he was testing as a reference. It was definitely the alternator and the battery was also going. He magically was able to have all of this replaced that same day and even checked all my tires and lights. Highly recommend. No frills garage. My SO's Honda was leaking oil at the rate of about a quart a month. She had the timing belt (with the associated seals) changed about a year ago...and that seems to be about the time it started leaking. Rather than going back to the shop that might have caused the problem in the first place, we searched Yelp for a well-reviewed shop to take a look at it. That is how we ended up at Apna Garage and met Jay (or Jatin, according to other reviews). Jay put the car on the lift and took a look underneath. The bottom of the engine was soaked in oil. He lowered the car and removed part of the timing belt cover. His guess was that the oil leak was due to a leaking seal on the front of the engine. He strongly recommended she take the car back to the shop that had done the seals (when they changed the timing belt) and see what they would do for her in terms of doing the work for a reduced price. We appreciated his turning down the work...so she might save a few bucks. He then refused any payment for the half hour he had spent examining her car. You might say he made a very good first impression on us. The old shop changed the seals for $400 (ouch!). When she picked up the car, they said that she needed her brakes done...and that it would cost about $500 to do the job. We decided to ask for a second opinion regarding the cost of the work. There was also an issue with the "Check Engine Light" which was constantly on. The shop would not tell her the cause...but just told her to come back before her annual vehicle inspection so they could reset it. This did not seem to be a satisfactory answer to the problem. We returned to Apna and asked Jay about the Check Engine Light and for an estimate for the brake job. He identified the problem with the Check Engine Light as a failed catalytic converter and showed us the readout on the OBD analyzer that identified the problem. Bad news, but not unexpected with a car with 135k on it. He gave her the option of an oem catalytic converter or an after market one with a better warranty (and price). After all was said and done, she had a new catalytic converter AND a brake job for $150 more than the former garage wanted for the brake job alone. To top it off, he did this work in a four hour window on a Sunday. I think Jay makes a new friend every time another person finds their way to his modest garage. He seems to really enjoy explaining what is involved in repairing their car. I believe the car repair advice he gives to his customers is the same advice he would give to a family member. To sum up: Read the reviews about this place. Suspend your disbelief that such a mechanic is in business near Decatur...because he is. His business hours are a little odd...he comes in about 11 AM and stays late (long commute), but he is open weekends. He works on almost all Japanese and Korean makes (I think Subaru may be an exception). I recommend him without reservation to anyone that owns one of these cars. read more

Totally upfront, friendly and honest mechanic. Fifty 5 star reviews can't be wrong, y'all. After being told by a few other mechanics that my car's starting problems were an obvious (and expensive: 400$+) problem with the alternator, I took my car into Apna for a final opinion. After taking a few minutes to explain to me what the problem was, and how I could spit it in the future, J explained that the issue was most likely due to a faulty battery- a 50$ fix. He even pointed out that mine was still under warranty, and recommended I simply replace it at a place down the road. Apart from saving me hundreds of dollars, J proved himself better than other mechanics I've interacted with by laying out, in simple, non patronizing terms, how and why my car was acting up. He aimed to educate me, as opposed to bamboozle me. If my car needs another issue looked at, I will CERTAINLY return to Apna, and am currently telling all my friends to do the same. read more

So, I called Jatin since my car was making this weird sound, and he saw me as soon as he could. It's a one-man car place, so your wait time and service depends on how many cars are in front of you! He did his work and is a good conversationalist. He has parts in his shop (bulbs, oil, etc.) and also has a runner to get things, like brake pads and tire covers. He did my brake pads change within an hour, providing that I was there super early on a Sunday morning with no one in front of me. Notes about this place: -Weekends: first come first serve, Saturdays are the busiest, so expect longer waits on a Saturday. -Accepts credit cards (I'm not sure about cash??) -A bit busted up and no seating space, but I didn't mind. It's not often somewhere has 5-stars with 20+ reviews... This place is absolute deserved of it. Jatin is such a gem. He's so cool and kind and knowledgable about cars. Got into a wreck and felt horrible. Meeting Jatin was a silver-lining to a very dark cloud of a situation. I had to leave for North Carolina the same day, so didn't have time to get my car fixed. He put it on the lift and checked it out thoroughly and explained everything going on with it... In a nice and detailed way that was easy for someone like me, who doesn't know all too much about cars, to understand. And he showed me everything he was saying. I probably took a good 20 minutes of his time, but he didn't want to accept any money from me. He knew I was from out of state... So it's not like he was doing that to try and earn a future customer or anything; he is just a genuinely kind person. On top of being so honest and nice, Jatin is also really funny and such an enjoyable person to be around... Which can be important, because car troubles never put anyone in a good mood. So it's good to interact with good people through all the bedtimes. I'd absolutely recommend this place to my friends and family and anyone and everyone. I wish I had discovered this place 2 years ago when I started grad school and not just before leaving Atlanta. Jatin is very professional, knowledgeable, gives best advice and foremost - HONEST! He tells you exactly what your car needs/ the why & where a certain problem and gives the best advice & service for your buck. Had a issue with my battery which I'd bought from another place a few months back. The place I bought it from kept telling me different reasons for the problem - alternator/ cables loose/rusted or apparent leak while telling me the battery was alright. When I got it checked from Jatin, it turns out all of the above were fine, the battery installed was of wrong capacity!!! He believes in trying the simplest tests/solutions first. He let's you come back there, see your car from underneath and ask away! I just needed an oil change (super affordable by the way... no more slimy upsetting from jiffy lube for me!) so there wasn't much to the service. I looked around the small shop and thought I may need some wiper blades, but "J" said mine were probably fine for while... I really liked that he convinced me against spending money! Looking around the shop you can see that he is a master technician which is a big deal in the auto care industry and used to work at a Lexus dealership. He knows his stuff! I almost cried when Jay finished working on my Honda Civic today. He smiled and greeted me first of all and it was sincere. He then asked me what was wrong with my car and I told him, it had started smoking immediately after I put some oil in it and started driving. He knew exactly what had happened and explained to me what needed to be done. After Jay explained everything, I asked him when could I get it fixed and to my surprise he said right now. Now Jay was already working on another car when I drove up, and I took a chance getting there around 4:15pm knowing that he will be closing around 6pm I think, so I just knew I was going to have to bring it back on another day and that I was going to have to pay him for diagnosing the problem. Well fast forward, while he was fixing my car, he was explaining everything that he was doing to the car and then, he asked me if I had any questions in which I did and he answered them and he kept me laughing all along while I stayed there for no more than an hour and I was out of there and the service was not overcharged like so many other places. God bless you Jay and your business and you have won a new customer. You guys have to really check him out, he knows his craft, he is friendly, sincere, honest, etc. And did I tell you he put air in my tires and didn't charge a extra fee for doing it. Humans: I have returned from a distant galaxy (um... the Midwest) to Decatur, my home. And to our friendly local mechanic, Jatin, who owns Apna Garage. I'm going to break character here: this guy's a phenomenon. Here's a breakdown of all the reasons why: - He never overcharges. Seriously: NEVER. - He always fixes the problem OR he tells you why he can't or why it's not worthwhile. - Never scams anyone - Works efficiently (= quickly+accurately) - He applies common sense to both his work as well as how he talks to you - He's intelligent, funny & friendly - Did I mention he never overcharges? Jatin knows his cars, especially Lexus, Toyota, and Honda. He's worked for Lexus forever, and he opened his own shop here originally just on Sundays to help out the local Decatur community. I've been going to Jatin ("J") for a year and a half now. I was actually pretty happy with my old mechanic, but they started to take longer and longer to get my work done. My friend who restores cars recommended J and he's done work for me ever since. I have 100% confidence in what he's doing. If he tells me something, I get it done. Period. Here's what happened yesterday, a Sunday (9/7/14). I texted J about bring my car in the next day (Monday) to have the radiator looked at. He said he was going to be out the next day, but that he would look at it that day. I brought it in at 2:30 ON A SUNDAY. J personally drove to the parts dealer to pick up a new radiator, installed it, and did my scheduled maintenance, and had it done by 9:00 that night. New radiator in 6 1/2 hours ON A SUNDAY! He even left my car for me, without me paying him, for me to come pick up so I could have it for work this week. THEN, after I profusely thanked him for the amazingly quick work on a Sunday, he thanked ME for allowing him to serve. I'm not making this up. He also has worked on my fiance's car, advising her that an issue that arose was covered under a recall by the manufacturer and that she should have the dealer fix it for free, rather than having him do it and for her to pay him. This was the very best experience I've ever had at an auto repair shop, which is why I'm writing my first Yelp review. I called ahead and "Jay" (I suppose this is the same Jatlin that the other reviews mention) said I could stop in anytime. I drove up and he was working on another car outside of the small shop but stopped immediately and greeted me. He drove my car into the one-stall garage and onto the lift to get to work (the speed of this was amazing, if you've ever been to a "standard" autoshop). I had brought a book because this process usually takes an hour or more, but he identified the problem very quickly and went right to work fixing it. I just waited in the garage and got to watch the whole process, which was fun and I chatted with Jay a bit. Once my tire was fixed he made a couple of helpful suggestions, checked my oil and brake fluid and refilled the oil. He drove my car out of the garage and thanked ME. I tried to pay him but he said, "Aww, I didn't do anything worth it," and refused to take my money. It might have been a simple job, but he took 30 minutes out of his day to help me out, and now my car doesn't sound like a blender when I make a turn. I will definitely be using Apna in the future and suggest it to all my friends. read more

So my car has been making an awful noise for a while and lately it had felt as if the car was completely coming apart. Found Apna Garage on yelp and figured all these amazing reviews had to have a grain of truth. So on a drizzly gloomy day, I schlepped my sick kiddo with me over to the garage. Jay greeted us with a smile and took my car for a spin. Came back and said "How do you drive this thing?!? Let's see what's going on." After raising it up, he called me over- making some jokes about hoping I had good insurance....my car really was falling apart!! A major bolt had almost come completely undone!!! I almost started crying- I drive my kids in this car every day!!! He fixed the problem and we took it for a test run. Felt like a new car!!! We went over some things that I might need down the road, but there was zero pressure to do anything now. Bottom line- Jay is one of the nicest, KINDEST, people I've ever met.
