This was my first bagel of the New York trip, and I'll admit I was skeptical. As someone from LA, I always wondered if NY bagels were really thaaatt different from bagels everywhere else or if the hype was just.... hype. (I still need to try Courage and Layla !!) We came on a Saturday around noon and there was already a pretty long line. It took about 20 minutes to order, and luckily we managed to find a table as someone left when we just finished ordering. We ordered the smoked salmon bagel with scallion cream cheese, and I can definitely see why people love this place now. The bagel had a very crispy exterior with a chewy interior, and the scallion cream cheese was perfect with it. It added just enough flavor without taking away from the salmon. The salmon itself was fresh and generously portioned. My only complaint is that the bagel was oily and greasy. It felt like they drizzled extra olive oil or something?? It was so rich that I couldn't even finish half of it, and I definitely think it needs a coffee alongside it to balance out. Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm glad I tried it. Would I come back? Yes. After nearly a month of absence, I would think that some of you would have missed me, but I guess I was wrong. I guess life does indeed go on, without my reviews. That is changing with this first review. The first of several I have lined up and ready for writing. So hope you did miss me, because I am back on the writing slab and ready for takeoff. Apollo Bagels is one of the first bagelries to come across my eye that piqued my interest in more ways than one. It also helps that they have a location fairly close to where I work, so with resounding reviews, and a menu offering something close that I can really enjoy, I set off. The menu is fairly limited in offerings, only three types of bagels, plain, everything and sesame, and the menu is limited pretty much to smoked salmon, cream cheese, whitefish, butter, and a few other selections. Safe to say that I went with the smoked salmon sandwich, which in the grand scheme of things is not very expensive. The sandwich arrives quickly (and open faced) and upon my first bite, I was thinking Bagelsaurus all over again. Delicious bagel. Excellent salmon cover, the cream cheese is the perfect amount. The capers and the dill add a nice saltiness and fragrance to the bagel. It also is a quite filling meal. This was a joy to eat and I was quite sad when this came to a close. I can see why this bagelry has great reviews. The customer service is outstanding and the output matches what you get when you walk in, a clean, vibrant store full of friendly faces and excited employees. People always talk about NY bagels and I always raise an eyebrow and think "How good could they actually be?" Well, turns out, they can be really, really good. FLAVOR (5/5): 1. EVERYTHING BAGEL WITH SMOKED SALMON, CREAM CHEESE, CAPERS, RED ONION, DILL (vegan): I got this vegan because I'm lactose intolerant and wow this was still delicious. The texture of the bagel is a big part of what makes this a top-tier bagel; it's crispy on the outside but chewy on the inside, so you just get this beautiful-sounding bite right when you dive in. And the combination of toppings really elevate it. The dill brightens up the smoked salmon (and I think they put some sort of lemon/oil on top as well?) and... wow. I'm already craving it again. The bagel is a bit crunchier than I typically like it but the flavors came together so well and it was absolutely delicious. The lines can get long so come early! I'm bummed I just discovered this place and also mad that I got so quickly addicted. I went 2 days in a row and now have tiny daydreams about the sourdough bagels. As someone whose tummy is very happy when I avoid gluten but is also a bagel lover the struggle is real. I have walked by Apollo Bagels for many months not knowing that they specialize in sourdough bagels. The shop is spacious and there is seating and a bathroom. Line is often long (one of the reasons I never stepped in before ) but moved quickly. Service is quick ,the menu is small and this place runs like a well oiled machine without sacrificing customer service. Very friendly staff and I saw orders being doubled checked while packing. Bagels are more than fairly priced especially for the fantastic taste and quality ingredients. The tomatoes definitely had a good upbringing :-) I was very fascinated by the orange juice machine, it juiced out a cup of fresh oj in seconds from the huge feeding basket . I could not stop thinking about this bagel my entire trip. We got there on a weekday morning around 11 am and it was pretty crowded but we got our orders quick and the lines moved fast. Service was nice and friendly as well! I got the lox bagel on an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. The lox tasted so fresh and light, not fishy at all, and their marinated onions added the perfect crunch and acidity. Scallion cream cheese had a good flavor and I think they put lemon juice or lemon pepper seasoning on top? Which was chefs kiss. Probably one of the best bagels I've had in new york for my visit. The menu is simple with just a few items that they serve, but it is so good. I ordered the everything bagel with smoked salmon and added scallion cream cheese for an extra $1.00. The bagel itself is quite crispy and the cream cheese is super delicious. Made with fresh ingredients and the dill with it was just great! Also ordered fresh-squeezed orange juice for $6.50. The interior had pretty much no decor - just some seating and a casual ambiance. The menu was tiny for a bagel shop, which kept things simple. I had seen that this place was not to be missed and I'm so glad we stopped in. I got the everything bagel smoked salmon, scallion cream cheese, and dill. It was delicious. It was kind of lemony. The salmon taster very fresh too. The bagel was just the perfect texture. It was filling too. One of my favorite bagels of our trip.
