We work in the office building where the cafe is located. We have SERIOUSLY TRIED in many occasions to order lunch and they can't get order straight if you request even one change to a sandwich. God forbid if you order for two people on the same ticket. Her tuna melt is not toasted, but my regular sandwich came with roasted bread I had not requested. This happens time and time again. Appetite Cafe located in the 401 W A St building in downtown San Diego is my go-to spot for quick, easy and delicious breakfast and lunch options. It is part of my morning routine every Monday-Friday before I head into the office, that I stop at Appetite Cafe and pick up a large coffee and two hard boiled eggs, already pealed. I also come in for lunch and choose from their array of great lunch options, already prepared and ready for purchase or on the menu with a short time of preparation. Although they have a great assortment of food and drink options to choose from on a daily basis, what really makes Appetite special is its staff. The manager and the workers know me by name, know what I like to eat and just make my days a little bit brighter :) They are always so friendly, quick and their customer service is extraordinary. Whether you work in the building, work in the surrounding area or are just passing by on a walk downtown, stop at Appetite Cafe for a great food experience and an even better staff! read more

This was not my first visit, but definitely my last. I gave 2 stars instead of 1, because I've been there before and though I can't remember what I had, something made me come back. Was this just a bad menu choice? Maybe, but when I say 'bad', I mean 'disgusting'. I went to lunch with 2 friends on a weekday and 2 of us were craving burgers. There are at least 3 different burgers on the menu and the menu isn't that big, so we went to Appetite as a compromise. The counter staff is not very friendly, they make statements as if you should've already known how their meals are served. Whatever, I can deal with rude people, but it's the food that makes the restaurant. When the burgers came out, I did notice they were pretty gray. Each bite was worse than the last and if I could guess how these patties were made, it would be from skin and fat only with mostly filler. There was little to no taste and it was almost chewy like really soft rubber. I'm actually getting a nasty feeling in my stomach just remembering this. What gives? My friend hated his as well and joked that it was like the 10 for $3 packs of burgers you get at Costco. I have actually gotten those before and they at least tasted like something. I felt like I was eating some sort of waste product. It was horrible. It wasn't just 'a bad one', because we both got the gray rubbery patty. Please take burgers off your menu. Based on this experience alone, I would never return. If you need a fast meal, don't mind dealing with people that seem to not understand that they are in the service industry, and don't mind eating trash, this is the place to go. Again, though, I had been before and I went back, so it can't all be bad. But, are you willing to waste a meal trying to find out? read more

I love this place. The food is made to order and fresh, so it take a little while to prepare. They do have some pre packaged items available for faster check out. I work in the building and know that during meal times it's usually pretty busy so if I don't have time to wait I'll call ahead. The food is delicious and made with healthy ingredients. I'm in love with the meat lovers burrito, although I only get it on special occasions. The staff is very friendly and keeps everything very clean. If you have to hang out waiting for your passport to be ready this is the place. It's very clean and well stocked with a large healthy and comfort food menu selection. Good for breakfast and lunch (egg white omelette and fruit/Starbucks coffee/tuna sandwich) and the staff was super nice and accommodating so I could work on my laptop for several hours as I waited. read more

since we moved our office downtown i've been going to this deli everyday. i've yet to have anything bad from their menu! especially their panini's!! the southwestern panini is my favorite! all their food is great! from their oatmeal and breakfast burritos to their salads and sandwiches! amazing food! not to mention the soups they have. their prices are extremely reasonable as well. everything is FRESH!! same day fresh! one other thing that i really need to mention is the staff. the staff is so freakin friendly! i'm a HUGE fan of great customer service and these guys have it! they are the "complete package" as far as food joint go. if you work or live downtown you should stop in and give them a try. you won't be disappointed!! read more

Our company ordered lunch from here for the first time, but many of the employees frequent this place. The menu selection is great, something for everyone. I especially like the salad selection. I put the order in about 10:30 for a 12:00 pick up, and the food was ready on time. Everything was delicious! We will definitely be ordering frequently from here. read more

I work in the same building and I eat here about once a week. I've tried nearly everything on the menu and I've been very happy with the food. The Market and the Black & Blue sandwiches are my favorite. The red beet salad is also very good. The only breakfast item I've had is the breakfast burrito - also very good. Service is fine. Very clean and good seating. Clients and colleagues will accompany me to Appetite about once a month and I've never heard anything but positive comments from them. read more

I have worked in this area of San Diego for many years and have patronized most of the restaurants in this part of town. So, to the extent "actions speak louder than words," I eat here several times a week. I love their breakfast sandwiches, particularly the Gourmet Croissant, as well as their salads and wraps. My favorite in the latter category is the Turkado wrap, which includes a generous portion of their in-house roasted turkey together with lettuce, cheese and chipolte aoli. I have also tried and enjoyed their salads and am especially fond of the "Black and Blue" steak salad on romaine with red onions and blue cheese. While I still head over to Waters or Tender Greens or to one of the many Little Italy restaurants on occasion, my taste buds are very grateful to have Appetite in the neighborhood. I have been a loyal customer since 2008, back when it was called Pacific Western Deli!!They had a varied menu, covering breakfast, lunch and the ever so needed afternoon snack. The staff was friendly, the service was fast, and the food was great. The sandwiches were made to order, and the staff graciously accepted my requests to modify my sandwich or salad (e.g., mustard instead of mayo; bread untoasted, one-half a sandwich not a whole sandwich). The daily specials included a large portion entre, a salad or chips, and a drink for a very reasonable price. The deli closed down for a few months, moved to a new location within the building and re-opened as "Appetites". The menu has been expanded to provide more bistro type offerings. In-door and outdoor seating is also available. You can place your order "to go", or you can "eat in" - and the staff brings your order to your table. The staff - what can I say about the staff and the owner, but "love 'em; love 'em; love' em"! I visit daily for my shots of espresso. All the counter staff knows my order and start to make my coffee drink as soon as I hit the door. Service like this really makes my day. It's rare today to find a team of people that care enough about their customers to remember their order. They also offer catering services, which I used for an important meeting I hosted in my office. I was able to order both breakfast and lunch online, less than 24 hours before my meeting. When I arrived at my office the following day my breakfast order had already been delivered and was set up in the conference room. A delicious sandwich platter, with salad, fruit and a wonderful drink selection was delivered in time for lunch - all of which made a great impression on my clients for a very reasonable price. I will definitely use their catering services again . In my opinion, Appetites embodies the phrase of "new and improved". read more

I've been coming here for almost three years because the location is convenient but the service and delay is horrible. I called my order (a simple salad) in today around 11:10 and I wasn't given a pick up time. The salad was still not ready when I got there 30 minutes later. It took them 15 more minutes to make it and no one seemed knowledgeable of an accurate wait time or apologetic for the ridiculous delay. Sadly I don't think the convenience of the location is worth the delay and at times, negative attitudes from staff. read more

I work in the building where this deli is also located so from time to time I grab lunch there. The staff are very friendly; however the prices are ridiculous for what they offer. For instance, a salad with chicken added is an easy $9, which would maybe be ok of the portion was larger and the quality of the meat better. The deli actually microwaves the chicken before adding it to the salad. While it may seem small, they do not even offer a discount on coffee when you bring your own container. in general, the place nickels and dimes you for most things. For just a little walk, one can get better and more reasonably priced lunch items down the street! read more

I have been going to this place on and off for years now and even though they have either messed up my order or forgotten my order on several occasions, I always gave them a chance and go back because they are conveniently located near my work. However, yesterday was the last straw. First I found a small hair in my salad, I stopped eating it and started with my flatbread when I again found another hair, this time a longer 2-3 inch white hair through the melted cheese. Eeewwww. It made me so sick, I almost vomited. Never again will I go back to this place. On the bright side, I will end up saving a lot of money because this place is ridiculously expensive. I would spend $12-13 dollars each time. I would much rather walk a little further and eat at Little Italy or drive elsewhere with better customer service where the cooks wear hair nets! read more

I don't know what has happened with this place but the crappy service (or lack thereof) along with issues with ordering on-line which I normally do, or even calling in an order has become so problematic I will no longer go there even if I'm starving! I am so over this place and the food isn't all that great, pricey and not worth the headache. Again today (and for the last time) my on-line order could not be found. MOMMYS boy? Pathetic that someone who obviously work there and was fired has to go on this site and try to make a frivolous point. I've been eating here for 8 years. THE FOOD AND SERVICE has always been very good. The sandwiches are big fresh and delicious. I personally met the new manager Douglas in Feburary this year. He's seemed to be very passionate about food and making Appetite a great eatery. Since being here the food and service is so much better. The waiting for food is so much faster. Last year I would wait 15 minutes for a salad. Now...5 minutes. What's really great is the new selection. Poke, more salads, more Mexican items, seaweed salad, and so much more. If you have never been here try it!...Ask for Douglas, typical sharp tongue but funny New Yorker!! He's the reason a bunch of us like coming downstairs.
