My son and I went there yesterday and ordered the wraps. The owners and staff were super friendly and the wraps tasted good, however unfortunately my son and I ended up with food poisoning last night that was the only thing we ate yesterday so some improper food handling perhaps or cross contamination. To my fellow yelpers, I don't generally write unless it's good one, and this market deserves one. In fact.. it's the least I can do. Firstly, Helen, the lady you will see when purchasing items is very thorough, detail-oriented, and very nicely dressed with the warmest energy. She knows how to run a store. Then you will notice in the back how clean and diligent her family is, always wearing gloves with cooking and spending 20 minutes to make a lunch with love. You can really tell if food is made with love or just thrown together. Next, I want to brag about how every item they carry is no where close to what you would find in regular stores. A true taste of culture- fresh feta cheeses and various olives, fresh kefir, Persian cucumbers, bread you will never find unless you go to LA, and sweets and teas everyone can enjoy. They even have quail and herring to try.. for those adventurous souls. I always wonder who "designed" the store, for lack of a better word.. because wow, everything from the menu to the art on the outside is just perfect. Everything is so cleverly organized. This market makes living in Fresno that much better. This is the cleanest place I've ever walked into and truly appreciate the generosity they share with us. To my good fortune, I stumbled across Ararat Market and Grill when trying to decide what to eat on Herndon Avenue. Ararat is located in Clovis, at the cross streets of Herndon and Clovis, which makes it a short 7-minute drive from Fresno State. Ararat Market and Grill, is family owned and operated by an Armenian Family. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the individual who took my order was extremely helpful and made me feel welcome. Ararat specializes in Armenian, Mediterranean and European foods. Ararat Market and Grill is not your typical restaurant. The seating space is limited to outdoor seating and there are only a couple tables available that can accommodate two people per table. Ararat is meant to be more of a takeout restaurant. I got lucky and happened to be in the restaurant during one of their slow times and was able to sit down to enjoy my meal. The food is made to order, which means that even during a non-busy hour, the wait time is 15-20 minutes. I must say the wait was worth it. While I waited for my food, I took the time to browse the market side of Ararat. The shelves are filled with foods that you will never see in Trader Joe's or SaveMart. The countries I saw represented were Armenia, Bulgaria, Greece, Russia, Lithuania, and even Turkey. There are a variety of products throughout the store, including a variety of cheeses, natural juices, deserts, spices, meats, breads, produce and more. I briefly spoke with the owner and she stated that the products are authentic and the majority of the products in the store are imported and some do come from local vendors. What caught my eye the most were the bakery items on display by the register. Some of the items on display were lahmajoon (Armenian Pizza), ponchik (Armenian donuts) and Russian pirozhki's, which the owner stated they were freshly made daily. For lunch, I ordered the Chicken Shish Kabob Plate which came with one skewer of boneless chicken, basmati rice, salad, garlic sauce and pita bread. The prices on the menu are very reasonable. My chicken plate was only $7.99 and I had the option of upgrading to chicken breast meat for only $1.00 more, which I did. For $8.99, I received a very generous portion that was enough to feed two people. The chicken kabob meat was marinated and grilled perfectly. The chicken was juicy, moist, warm and delicately seasoned. The basmati rice was fluffy, hot and had a perfect amount of butter, definitely not greasy at all. The salad was crisp, and tasty. It was tossed in with a simple lemon vinaigrette dressing. One of my favorite parts about this dish was the garlic sauce. The garlic sauce was delightfully light and tasty and the best part was that the garlic taste was not overpowering. The pita bread was warm and really soft. The whole dish was notably freshly made and was bursting with flavor, which awakened my taste buds. Both the food and the service were excellent at Ararat Market and Grill. I had a very pleasant experience, which surpassed my expectations. My rating for Ararat is a 19 on a scale of 0-20: A rare jewel; an outstanding dining experience; more than food-it's edible art; among the best in the Central Valley. The family that runs Ararat makes each of their dishes with pride and a commitment and it shows with the foods they serve. I must say, that if you are in a mood to try some of the best chicken kabobs in town, I highly recommend that you make a stop at Ararat. I can state with certainty that I will return and perhaps expand my horizons by trying something new. Ararat Market and Grill is a truly hidden gem in Clovis. read more

First time visiting Ararat Market. Very nice family market. Ordered the Lamb Shish Plate. The rice pilaf was the best I have ever had the pleasure of trying. Great salad, and the bread was fresh and soft. Excellent. The lamb was sooooo tender and spiced perfectly. Not too much, not to little. Just the right amount of spice to compliment the soft lamb meat. Did not have the time to explore the shelves but i will be sure to on my next visit. This is my new favorite Mediterranean Food store. Everything is super good. Owners are extremely helpful and friendly. The place is very clean. Hardworking family. The Lady at the register is very helpful, you can tell she cares about the food they prepare and serve. The food is fresh and delicious. Selection on the grocery items is sufficient. I found everything I needed there. Produce is available but limited, however, the stable items are always there like fresh farm tomatoes and cucumbers and fruit. The meat selection is great. You can order in or to take out and wait for your order or call a head. You can buy your own uncooked meats and grill at home. Prices are reasonable too. This was our first visit to Ararat and after inhaling our "Lunches" we'll be back! 11yo Son Joey had the Lamb Heart (yes, lamb heart) Combo, 13yo Daughter Pip had the Falafel Combo and Pop had the Pork (yes, pork) Kebab Combo all with Tahn (liquified and salted yogurt drink). I am of Armenian descent, am a good cook, especially Hye food and I must say its very good. The pilaf was good (that's the gold standard test for a good restaurant) and it was made with Indian Basmati rice. Be prepared to wait a bit. Your protein is not getting melanoma under an evil IR lamp. It is made to order! 15 minutes (at 12:20PM) is not a lot of time for freshly grilled meats. We'll be back. If not The Kids might carve me up and toss me on the grill for Lunch! For the Fringe Folks, there are vegetarian and veggan options. Fear not O Herbivores, Armenians are Masters of V/V cuisine as our Lenten dishes can have NO animal in it. Ararat is also a full service delicatessen offering Middle Eastern and Mediterranean items including ice creams, pastries and produce. Go scale the foodie mountain that is Ararat Market.
