Archive is all about coffee, teas, books and food. The menu was limited and different that was is posted on their website. The berry salad was not available, probably due to the season. The vegetable soup was decent but not especially flavorful. I received much more broth than I did vegetables. That may have been due to how much it was stirred before ladling the soup. The fondue was fabulous. Thick and and tasty. The bread served with had a bit of honey drizzled over it. Along with the bread there was some Granny Smith apple sliced and some slivers of ham. I focused more on the bread and the apples. My only request is that some put a qualifier on their website that salad is only available seasonally. read more

I forget what the hell I was doing in Salem because why would anyone go there (maybe the fair? That sounds right.), but we came here because they serve both coffee and booze. We happened to arrive at happy hour so we got a deal on a burger, too. The interior is beautiful--trendy dark wood and industrial lighting & huge windows make it both airy and intimate. Half of the space is all ages and half is the bar area for adults only. Unfortunately, due to the high ceilings and aforementioned airiness, the presence of a child is made very obvious even in the bar area because the sound carries exceedingly well. I think it would be an even better bar if it was 100% no minors but apparently children eat and drink too, and some parents enjoy bringing their kids to bars. The burger was surprisingly good and the fries were addictive; it wasn't a fancy plate of food but it was filling and affordable, especially from a place that looks like this. I ordered a latte they had on special that was flavored with rosemary and, no lie, it was maybe the best coffee of my entire life. I have given this place multiple tries and always been unimpressed by the service and the drinks. Many times when I have come here the bar has completely forgotten that I ordered a drink and I have to come inside and re-order it. After getting the drink I'm always disappointed with how watered down it is and lacking in flavor considering how pricey their drinks are. I want to love this place I really do I love the environment I love their creativity and I love that they also offer coffee but so far it has really miss the mark for me. read more

My favorite coffee shop in Oregon for sure. First of all, this shop is HUGE with plenty of seating everywhere! Even with the massive space, it still has that intimate coffee shop vibe. Super cozy. The beverages range from specialty coffees to good beer and wine. I haven't tasted enough to really leave a detailed review, but everyone just looked fantastic. I was blown away by this place. Not only is it incredibly cool, like dripping with cool vibes from the amazing decor, and it has great food and coffee service. No doubt the bar is on point, too. I searched around for coffeeshops in Salem to do some work and finally found this place. Boy am I happy that I did. The interior is very nice, with plenty of seating and different seating options from easy chairs to tables to the bar. The biggest crowd was around the barista--I always appreciate a coffeeshop with a good barista bar. Business people were meeting at the tables, a few people were working on laptops. I ordered a latte and a specialty drink, something about bees. I also got a pastry and some avocado toast. I think I'd skip the toast next time because it was no frills and something about this place says I need more frills in my life. Quiet a fun bar with a lot of thought put into it. Each drink has a unique concoction and flavor, but you can't go wrong. The food it flavorful as appetizers for the table and Chatted with the owner about the technique and thought that goes into each food and drink on the menu. It changes regularly with the seasons and has a quieter milieu for drinks. There is indoor outdoor seating if you dare in the fall, but summer time makes that indoor/outdoor living more possible. The prices were a bit much, but the service was great. We hung out with our waitress and caught up after her shift to show her around town. This place has a really chill vibe and the layout is very inviting and comfy. It has a nice industrial feel to it with the open layout and a huge bar in the middle. There's plenty of seating options all the way from some comfy chairs tables and couches in different corners of the big hall. I had the bread pudding, which is not traditionally made, is more like a cinnamon roll, but still really good. Their cocktails are amazing with a lot of unique choices. Latte is simply espresso and milk, but the latte here is milk, syrup and a touch of coffee! The coffee was so little that I could not say if it is espresso or instant coffee!!! What. A. Gem. After a week on a rotation in Salem, I was convinced there was little of interest in the culinary, coffee, or bar scene. I've never been so happy to be wrong. Archive caters to all my needs as a bedraggled student. You can get a quick coffee and pastry to go. They have delicious food if you want to stay a while. The wifi is fast and there's plenty of seating. Most importantly, when the sun goes down and you're on your third hour of studying, you can also order a unique craft cocktail. I thought I was only coming in for a quick drink but I ended up staying because the friendly service and Art Deco ambiance held onto me. I tried two of their house cocktails (choosing was one of the toughest decisions I've ever made) and they were fabulous. It's clear they put a lot of care into house made syrups, liqueurs, and infused alcohols. My second drink was the bartender's choice and I was very impressed with his choice of flavor combination. The food was equally impressive. The pho tacos packed a lot of flavor and went well with a side of sweet potato crisps. I finished up with a decaf mocha that was just the right balance of sweetness. I love this place! Very classy and fun. Don't be afraid to dress up here and don't be afraid to dress casual. It has an odd sense of being in the middle when it comes to class. The lights are always very dimmed here. This is a coffee bar so minors are aloud until a certain time. They have amazing cocktails and good deals for taco Tuesday. Every other day is a little spendy to be honest. But it's worth it for the great relaxing, classy and hipster atmosphere. read more

What a great place. We are traveling through and very little was open. We notice this and stopped for lunch. What a great place, comfortable inside just like home and the chicken tacos were over the top. We will be back when in the 9/2/19 Well as promised we came back and even brought some friends. Food was great and all of us ordered a full meal, iced tea and one coffee. We we up and asked for a refill... That will be a dollar each please.....What! Used to come here back when I worked in Salem a few years ago and remembered thinking the coffee was pretty good. Got a couple iced mochas with almond milk and they were quite honestly some of the worst I've ever had. For one, it seems like there's only one size and I asked for light ice, and I still ended up with maybe 10oz of actual drink. The other, there was plenty of chocolate flavor, but it was awful tasting. I can't even describe why as much as you could tell there was sweetness, but the flavor wasn't remotely good. And there wasn't much coffee flavor at all. Not sure if they were 5 second shots or what, but there wasn't any strong coffee flavor to help balance the chocolate. I literally forced my drink down just to get the coffee out of it then drank some water to get the taste out of my mouth. My wife just threw hers out after a couple sips. Big fans of Archive for their wonderful servers and most especially Rachel. She always greets us with a warm smile and makes us feel welcome and appreciated. I can't tell you how far that goes in making you want to return to this establishment. A couple of things at Archive that are especially great are the crème brûlée and the rice bowl--no matter what item you add to it. We've had it with both steak and tofu. Both are great. Right now they have a flank steak that is excellent and if you're vegetarian there are also plenty of options. Their breakfasts are very good, especially the breakfast burrito which has crunchy bacon, egg and other deliciousness in it and also the avocado toast. One of the most fun things is the revolver from the cocktail menu, which means the bartender will make a specialty drink for you based on which base liquor you choose. The server will always come back and make sure you like it. It's just a quirky fun interestingly-decorated great atmosphere for breakfast, lunch, dinner or late night. I would say there's only one negative and that is on Friday nights there is an absolutely atrocious street "musician" who sets herself up on the street corner opposite Ritters and Archive EVERY Friday night. She plays electric guitar with an amp and is so bad it will make your ears bleed. You can't sit outside at either of these establishments on a Friday night without wishing you were wearing earplugs. Every Friday night since springtime she is out there ruining these businesses' customer enjoyment of outside dining at their establishments. It's incredibly arrogant to inflict this on the entire neighborhood and she appears to be completely un-selfaware of how bad she is. Patrons have actually complained and moved inside or just paid their check and left because of her. She plays the same several chords over and over again, occasionally there's some flat attempt at singing, a depressing Janis Joplin wanna be, you think maybe you are listening to some young person practicing only she's practicing in the middle of a busy restaurant neighborhood, the same songs over and over again and is there every. Friday. night. I work downtown and after a week of work I would just love to go to Archive with friends and sit outside at their great outdoor sidewalk tables, but this awful street musician absolutely ruins it. Other than THAT, Archive is great for outdoor dining the rest of the week, or if you sit inside on a Friday night also great. I wish somebody from the restaurant would go over and suggest she try a different spot, maybe one not surrounded by restaurants and bars with outdoor seating and who are all playing their own music which is drowned out by her noise. We want to go sit outside at Archive every single Friday night otherwise, until it is too cold to do so, because it is one of our favorite places in downtown. Great food. Menu changes regularly. After moving into downtown Salem almost 2 years ago I have found myself stopping by Archive almost every single morning for coffee to-go. Yes, its an addiction, perhaps a bit spendy habit, but for me and my husband it's totally worth it. There are so many reason I love Archive so let me just tell you... 1. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Hands down, amazing. The staff always seem to be genuinely happy and smiling. They remember your name, your drink of choice and even things about what you've been up to lately. 2. COFFEE: I love having a cup of daily coffee. What I find with many coffees is they upset my stomach. I also find that many have a "burnt" taste to them and I have to drown them in cream and sugar just to drink them. With Archive coffee I can drink the coffee plain, and it not only taste GREAT, but there is no issue with upsetting my stomach. 3. FOOD: So many great tasting menu choices. I particularly love Taco Tuesday and the delicious Cauliflower Tacos! 4. COCKTAILS: Let me tell you. If you're looking for one of the most creatively handcrafted cocktail menu in the area, this is your place. Each and every cocktail on the menu is original and prepared perfectly. There is so much thought put into their rotating cocktail menu. For those cocktails you would prefer to order that are not on the menu, the same skill and great taste goes into those as well. 5. THEME NIGHTS:- Just take a look at their Events page on Facebook! They 're always doing something fun! Whether its Slow Jams Sunday, Harry Potter Night, Formal First Saturday and more, they always put alot of thought and detail into these events with down to special menus for food and drinks for those events only. Unfortunately, the quality of the food has gone down! We used to get the cauliflower tacos and herbed fries and they were STELLAR. But we went back recently, and everything was totally different. The fries were thicker and less seasoned and the cauliflower tacos were totally bland. Really unfortunate because that was one of our fav dishes in Salem! Stopped in for a cocktail and/or coffee after dinner at Ritter's. The waitstaff was attentive, entertaining, and up-beat. We were placed on the waitlist for "downstairs" and after a couple of drinks our spot was ready. After moving downstairs we were treated expertly. The drinks were delicious and the ambience was on point, make the trip downstairs a very enjoyable night. Baristas are polite and kind, the drinks are amazing and custom, and the atmosphere is inviting and cozy. This place is the like dream coffee shop that the big retailers wish they could be more like. My mom went with the Moscow mule, my dad had hot tea, which they steeped twice for him. I went with a coffee and espresso drink that had black walnut bitters and was appropriately named "comfy chair." Our barista was so nice. I asked about the donut people that occasionally made donuts inside the shop (side note - amazing gluten free and vegan donut holes that'll change your mind about those two maligned food distinctions). He regaled us about their business story and new storefront, and also took several minutes to talk about dinner recommendations.
