These guys have nailed it, and know it. The menu is small but brilliantly conceived and almost every item delivered. Here's what we ordered: Beer flight. Imaginative choices in both drafts and bottles (see photo, current at the time of my visit) and you can get 4 five-ounce samples for $12. Five stars. Brussels Sprouts/Kale Salad. This is good for you, right? Sure didn't taste like it. A creamy dressing rich with parmesan or pecorino. My 13 year old gobbled it up. Five stars, with a bonus point for bringing it before the garlic knots. Garlic Knots (basic). Puts usual pizza parlor garlic knots to shame, and the heated marinara accompaniment is good enough to eat as a soup. Five stars. Ramen. Got this because my teen is a ramen fanatic, but as he said afterward, why would you order ramen in a pizza place? The slab of hoisin pork belly was generous but the noodles were flaccid and the broth was rich without being interesting. Two stars. Sausage and banana pepper pizza. Just as there is no world record in the marathon, there can be no five star pizza because of the variability. But this was very good. The crust was bubbly on the edges but falling apart in the middle. Maybe this was intentional but I would have liked a little more structure. Four stars. Skillet butterscotch cookie with caramel ice cream. They take raw cookie dough and cook it in the wood fired oven so you get the freshest, hottest cookie you have ever tasted. I've heard about Area Four for some time, and so this time I made it a priority to visit on my trip to Cambridge and MIT. The restaurant is conveniently located on the MIT campus, and near the Kendall Square T stop. The restaurant offers a variety of delicious salads, pizzas and other fare, but it is the pizza that shines. I love the space too. The pizza is in the Neapolitan tradition, charcoal grilled, thin crust and with a variety of ingredients on top. I chose the sausage and peppers pizza, small size, and I devoured it. The portion was perfect for one person, and possibly two with a salad. This is not New York style pizza, but similar to what you would find in New Haven or Pizzaria Mozza in LA. I can't count how many times I came here (pre-pandemic) for the breakfast pizza! Their other pizza is also tasty, but the breakfast pizza was so good we kept coming back just for this. The rich bacon, cheese, and eggs balance so well with the sour cream, pickled peppers, and perfectly cooked potatoes. For the margherita, the flavour of the dough was kind of overwhelming. The dough has a sour taste because it's fermented (?) for 36 hours and because the pizza doesn't have much flavour, all you taste is the dough. The clam and bacon has a unique and great flavour! I wish I could give 3.5 stars because Area Four deserves: - 2-3 stars for dinner - 4-5 stars for lunch Long story short: - Go for lunch, not for dinner - Expect issues with your order not coming out right (2/2 visits so far) - The pizza (esp. the Carnivore) is not as great as Food Network would have you believe (i.e. don't feel obliged to get it -- if there's something else on the menu that interests you more, go for it) - Price is fairly high for what you get - 1 large is enough for two people (no need to get two smalls) -- do half/half if you want to try more than one menu item Longer story: I made the mistake of going on a dinner date here the other night and will never do that again. This is a solid casual dinner spot for some delicious pizza and great drinks. Their cocktails were unique and unlike any cocktail I've had before. The pizza was delicious- we had the Mushroom and the Fall Squash. The Mushroom pizza was flavorful and the mushroom sauce was not overpowering yet delicious. This is a nice brunch place for some pizza in the morning. I don't know about you guys but I would LOVE to start everyday with a meaty pizza haha. We ordered the small carnivore pizza which was more than enough to fill two people. We didn't want to order anything else because the pizza seemed pretty heavy already. They have many other options in pizza terms but the carnivore pizza looked so so good and we certainly did enjoy the food. I went here for Sunday brunch with a few friends, this place was pretty packed. We waited about 15 mins for a table. This place focuses on mainly pizza but had some options for brunch. Their brunch menu seems like it's either really meaty options or strictly vegetarian options but none in the middle. I like my meals with just the right amount of veggie and meat combination. I really wanted to get the hot mess but I felt like it didn't have too many veggies in it. I wanted to add spinach to it but unfortunately you can't add in items to customize it to your liking. So I opted for the veggie hot mess and got maple sausage on the side which was still good! Comes out in a cute little personal skillet, egg cooked sunny side up with the egg yolk still oozing when punctured which is the way I like it. Right amount of salt and pepper in the mix. The asparagus was by far soggy, it was crunchy on the inside with a touch of softness on the outside. There brunch was pretty good, I can only image what their pizzas are like! I made a reservation for 5 and the table was ready for us when we arrived. One con is that 2 friends ordered alchi bevs and we got our food before the booze came out. The waitress apologized and, unprompted, offered that round for free. Awesome! What wasn't awesome is that the drinks were on the bill at the end. My friends are wimps, so even though I didn't have booze, I still asked the waitress about the free round. She had disappeared, so that took about 10 minutes. Not great. What WAS great was the food. I got the carnivore pizza which had soppressata, sausage and bacon. What!? There was plenty of meat on the pizza and it came out hot and delicious. Other friends got the not-pepperoni (soppressata), the special pizza (I think it was beef?) and 2 salads. Everyone was happy - even the salad people (boring - ha!). As I mentioned before - service was kinda spotty, but food was good. With the ample metered parking in the area, (and I think they validate at a garage after 5) this is a good meeting place for my friends and I who span over Brighton, Malden, the South End and Lexington. read more

Great dough means great Pizza For whatever reason, I hadn't had Pizza at Area 4 until recently. I've had coffee a few times and I even had brunch once. Area 4 is a pizza place first, and thus I'll focus on that. I would call the pizza, Neapoliltan style. The crust has a satisfying stretchy chew and some char from the hot and short baking time. The Carnivore pizza was great. Great sauce. Good mozz. Perfectly crispy sopressata. The mushroom and fontina was also very satisfying. Lots of mushroomy flavor. We also tried the daily special inspired by patatas bravas. To be honest, it didn't really remind me of the dish too much, but it was still very good. Cauliflower on pizza is pretty good. Service was a little bit sparse, but we had a casual and relaxed dinner. My cocktail was disappointing: 90% ice and gone in two sips. I needed somewhere to spend my carb cheat day and had recently read that area 4 had made bet of Boston for pizza. Great thin crust, very natural chewy with a bit of charred crisp- but none of the char taste. The pickled banana peppers added pop to the soppressata and everything was fresh and delish! I'm not a pizza snob and enjoy really any kind of pizza, so I will say the sauce isn't my favorite- sweet and tangy, but I'm certainly not kicking it out of my mouth! Worst service I have ever received. We were seated outside at a table that still had dirty plates, and told to place our order (and pay ahead of time) on their website. After waiting 30min and chasing the waiter down, we were told mobile orders sometimes just don't get placed in the queue and our food was not even started yet. They were completely unsympathetic and unapologetic despite members of our party being visibly upset. Took another 30min for the mediocre pizza to arrive; no waitstaff came to check on us, refill our water, or anything. I am a fan of Area Four and am not ashamed to say it. It is one of my go-to places for the cafe, the cool baristas, and their pizza/beer combos. I've been here countless times and although I don't stand behind everything on their menu, I love what they do well. CAFE My husband and I discovered it very shortly after the cafe opened, and before the restaurant portion was up and running. We've been exploring the city's coffee places and soon realized Area Four would become our favorite coffee date place for their espresso drinks (they serve cortados! and know what they are!) and the not-too-sweet chai latte that converts easily into its soy relative for those of us who are lactose intolerant. The baristas also are very friendly and make every visit fun and pleasant. Note: They serve Barrington as their house coffee, which I find a bit on the bitter side, but I am always intrigued by their guest options. The perfect breakfast lies in the breakfast sandwich. Where else will you find homemade maple sage sausage? It also comes with eggs and sharp cheddar, all on a homemade English muffin. It is greasy goodness that will leave you satisfied long after you leave. I disagree with other reviewers about the baked goods: I find them to be better than Flour's with a tasty homemade feel. Their scones in particular are yummy (try the ones with ginger if they come through rotation). In addition to the food, I have to say that the layout and acoustics of the cafe make it an even pleasanter place to sit. Unlike some other neighboring cafes/bakeries that get maddening loud and claustrophobic when crowded, Area Four still somehow keeps its calm atmosphere even during busy hours. RESTO / OVEN For those who visit the restaurant, the pizzas are really the best deal. My favorite is the sausage and pickled banana peppers one, although the mushroom and gremolata is a very good vegetarian and non-tomato-based option. And if you like beer, they have a ton on tap. I especially appreciate the local varieties. The next perfect breakfast is their "hot mess." We took the parents out to brunch here and we all ordered some variation of it (comes in both meat loving and vegetarian renditions). The fact that it comes out in a 6" cast iron skillet is a huge plus. The other fact that it is a combination of many great flavors layered with pickled banana peppers on top brings it even higher on my list. The decor is quite modern, with a white/grey theme and high top tables, in keeping with its location near MIT and Technology Square. I ordered the Hot Mess ($12): two sunny side up local farm eggs, home fries, bacon, breakfast sausage, caramelized onions, cheddar, scallions and pickled banana pepper relish. The dish came in a skillet and was a gooey mess, almost like a breakfast burrito in a pan. It was flavorful, greasy, and satisfying, and would be a good hangover option! This is a great place to grab a bite after work with some friends. Their pizza is very good, and the small is enough to split between 2 people or take some leftovers home. I also really appreciated that they were able to fit two small pizzas on our small table - we still had more than enough room to maneuver around comfortably and not spill or make a mess (something that's definitely overlooked at most pizza places). This was one of my favorite places to stop at while in Boston! This review is solely for the cafe - specifically their HOMERUN-out-of-this-world breakfast sandwich!! They have a house made English muffin which is MASSIVE - bigger than the size of my palm! The egg was perfectly fluffy and the sausage was savory and sweet (similar to Hawaii's Portuguese sausage). Other options include the triple meat (ham, sausage and bacon), as well as additional toppings ("carmies", peppers etc) you can add. The only item missing was a nice dose of sriracha!
