I visited Arepa Please on their anniversary and I was surprisingly underwhelmed and a little disappointed with the way the place was kept. Granted, i did visit on a "big day" so Instead of lowering their score on Yelp, I wanted to tell them personally on Instagram. Firstly, there was trash overflowing from all trash bins. The one by the door and one by the drinks. This was the first thing I noticed as I entered the place and returned my basket. There were drinking cups by the cooking equipment that employees were sipping from and open cups at the register and on the prep bar. I also wanted to point out the fridge at the register; I don't know if they usually have open containers of potato salads and cole slaw with the spoons remaining in the bowls but I found it to be a food safety hazard. Especially as employees are reaching in to retrieve the cakes and other food items deeper in the cooler. Also, I noticed that it was dripping condensation into the food and onto the sauce cups. This creates concerns that the cooler is not cold enough. (I later realized that the dripping water was mentioned in another review.) --------- After pointing these things out, someone from the page responded with a "thanks" and told me that they were really busy and ran out of food (completely disregarding the concerns I had mentioned above). Here's a screenshot. I've gone back recently and things were a bit more tidier but the fridge situation had not been addressed. Idk. This place has been blowing up on social media, and I can see why after visiting them for lunch. It's a small place, but it packs for the lunch crowd. The staff is on a familiar basis with the customers, so you know there are regulars. I wanted something that didn't have mayonnaise on it, so I went with the Jax Blonde, an arepa with pulled pork, cheese, and a side of green sauce. I paired it with a side of fries and an iced latte. The arepa is fully stuffed with plenty of cheese and meat, but I do wish the meat was further down in the arepa because I ate it all up before I was halfway through the arepa. But it was full of flavor, and the green sauce added a little bit of punch to the meat and cheese. The fries were crispy, just the way I like them! We came here as soon as they opened. Unfortunately, they didn't serve regular arepas at that time, only breakfast arepas. We decided to stay and try it out anyways. Arepas is almost like a pita sandwich but Venezuelan version made out of ground maize/corn? I am probably terrible at explaining it but it is a bit crispy on the outside. There's a large beautiful mural on the building when you pull up. So you can't miss it at all. We got the bacon egg and sausage egg arepas. They came with a beautiful green sauce that was so delicious. The place reminded me of a deli in the way it was set up. Which is what it used to be. Overall, I'd love to come back and try their lunch menu. I was just disappointed that they didn't serve their lunch until a certain time which isn't advertise anywhere. read more

If you're looking for the Spanish chatter in the kitchen you remember from your mom and Tias, this is the place. Very understated but charming atmosphere. There were cool little accents hidden everywhere like the tile wall under the front counter, the succulents at the window high top seats as well as their wooden chairs (which would only fit a narrow ass). I was surprised upon arriving at 10:30 am that they didn't offer breakfast, only lunch, but I came for an arepa, anyway, to investigate their namesake. My café con leche tasted like a regular coffee. Perhaps the worst café con leche I've ever had, but life has been good to me, so hey. My arepa came with potato salad side I asked for from a choice of many usual deli sides. I'm not Colombian so I'm not really sure what these are supposed to come with traditionally. Just as I was about to judge their "Latin" music in the background with Justin Timberlake singing "Senorita", out came a Latin remix of Get Lucky. I'll give you fusion points for that. I'll also give you fusion points for making me a chicken salad arepa with diced avocado (not many would like that, but it was one of my turn ons of the place.) Some North Americans showed up and all of a sudden came out a voice, "Hi guys!" from behind the grill of perfect Standard English accent. So if you have ICE on speed dial, you will be soothed by that amenity to the deli. The Johnny's menu was still out at the counter so it appears to me that this place is just an updated Johnny's with arepa sandwiches, is my guess. The concept here was a pretty good one. These guys.. this place is amazing. As a street food-loving Hispanic person that has had the real deal while standing on the street in Colombia these guys have it dead-on. Having traveled a bit to central and South America I've tasted much Hispanic cuisine... and this my friends is nothing short of authentic. Met a friend here for dinner, and it was FANTASTIC! We both got the queen arepa. It was so good. We loved the cilantro mayo on the side, and we got extra plantains!! I already can't wait to go back again just to have those plantains. Are used to eat plantains as a kid and I'm picky about mine, the ones here were incredible! The food was fresh and flavorful, and very reasonably priced. The location was great, lots of parking as well, and nice spot for a post dinner walk. I really wanted to love this place. But I could not tell if the arepas were undercooked or overcooked. I couldn't chew on the arepa. And it was the same for all four arepas. But if I had to choose for the best arepa, it would be the Jax Blond. The Philly cheesesteak's meat was spoiled. It had a reek smell. Like the meat had been left out for a very long time. Im not necessarily amazed, But i had the fancy monkey and it was pretty good. One of the messiest things ive ever eatin. The guy up front was very polite. Its worth a try everyone should give it a go and see if its for you. I took off one star for the pasta salad which was nothing to write home about, and i took off one star for the worst aspect of the entire restaurant the cleanliness. The floors look like they dont ever sweep. The tv had finger prints everywhere. The kitchen was a disorganized mess and the entire place seemed gross in general. Cute little place for good arepas! Had the Pabellon arepa which is basically ropa vieja (shredded beef in Latin spices and tomatoes), black beans and plantains. Really good! The arepa itself was crispy and perfect. Too full to pick up and eat. We also tried the Tequenos for an app; they were interesting and good! Did not care for the orange colored sauce, but the green salsa was delicious. Ambience was cute and cozy. We came on a Monday during an early lunch (11am) and there was plenty of seats available, however it is small, so if you're coming during lunch rush then you might be out. If you share this sentiment, or just want on in the deliciousness that is an arepa, Arepa Please is your best shot in Jacksonville. It's definitely a favorite place of mine to each lunch. Thoughts: I've been to Arepa Please several times now and I guess it's time I write a review for them. For starters I would love arepas in general, something about that semi-crunchy warm cornmeal flavor is just magical. It's one of my favorite comfort foods and when it's done right it's fantastic. However I don't know of a ton of places in Jacksonville that do them, or at least do them well. Arepe Please is one of the few places that does them well, and they do them really well. I've had a handful of different arepas from here but if I had to make a recommendation it would be their Queen. Their chicken salad is phenomenal, a little on the salty side, but it's very well-balanced with the avocados and the warm corn meal of the arepa itself. When eating it altogether it's absolutely wonderful. I've also had one of their arepas with black beans and queso blanco and it's fantastic as well. I only had one I didn't love and that was just because I thought the beef was a little dry, but that also could have just been the day. Another huge positive is how much you get for your money, they really stuff these things full. It feels like the perfect amount of feed for lunch. You don't end with that bloated oh-my-god feeling that makes you want to just go to sleep, but you also aren't hungry when you're finished. On top of their food being fantastic they are a great place to go for lunch because you can call your order in and it should be ready within 15 minutes. I never really have to worry about going here during lunch and waiting so long that it becomes impractical. Plus they have dedicated parking. They are in an area where parking can be very challenging to find but since they have their own lot I never really have to worry about it. I know I can call ahead swing by 15 minutes later get my food and still have time to eat it without having to rush back to the office. I would highly recommend anybody looking for a good lunch spot in the area to give Arepa Please a try, it could become one of your favorite new spots. And if you already like arepas I can guarantee you you're going to love this place. read more

I love arepas: Thick, savory (can be sweet too) corn pancakes that can be stuffed or topped limitlessly; so when this Venezuelan restaurant was recommended to me by Colombians (should be noted that both countries proudly claim the best arepas in the world), I jumped at the opportunity... and was gluttonously rewarded. To start off the place caught my eye when my sister and I drove by there on our way to meet her local Jacksonville friend for lunch.
