We had lunch here on Saturday while in the area. We have a regular lunch place in Sunnyside, Queens that we always eat at when in the area but today we chose to have a Japanese lunch. For starters, you should know that all restaurants in the New York City boroughs are graded by the Department of Health. If a restaurant doesn't have an "A" rating posted in the window, don't look for me because I won't be there. OK so let's get to the lunch because I don't have all day. I had something with Shrimp and tempura veggies over rice. Now I love shrimp so I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to shrimp no matter how you cook it. In this case the shrimp were kind of soggy, and the breeding was falling off them. The tempura veggies were OK, and the rice was acceptable. My wife had a box lunch consisting of teriyaki chicken, rice, salad, and gyoza. She loved it and said she would go back there again. So we have a problem, next time in the area we'll be eating separately. So if you see her tell her I said hello and I'll meet here at the car. read more

Ariyoshi is the hot sushi spot of Sunnyside, as TJ Sushi is to Woodside. Whether the latter or the former will win in a face-off for best sushi, that's for you to decide and me to know. I came here with a friend on a Friday night and though I initially wanted sushi, I was sold in after seeing the ramen noodles as advertised in the storefront--I really craved ramen at this point. After a good 20 minutes of sitting down and circling around the menu, and questioning whether my wants/needs are logical between multiple sushi rolls, donburi, udon noodles (it's a girl thing, trust me), I finally went with the Tonkotsu Ramen and the Lobster Salad Roll. I was highly anticipating on the Lobster Salad Roll to be as exquisite as TJ Sushi's over-the-top presentation. Instead, I got 6 mere minimal, tiny, plain (I don't expect pizzazz and a million different exotic sauces drizzled like art, but come on, it's a "Special Roll"--at least make it more presentable if it's your specialty) rolls that hardly had any lobster meat in its mixture, and was not delightful in taste. For $6, it was definitely a rip-off. Needless to say, it was disappointing and I don't think I will order any of their sushi rolls again because I can only expect small, effortless portions. I was ready to give up and expect the worst for my ramen, but the Tonkotsu Ramen did restore the sanctity and any hope I had left in this restaurant. The broth was just excellent and it was light but flavorful, and the pork was so good! After the whole deal with the sushi roll, I was surprised that the portions of the noodles were huge. We were about to go for dessert but was the told the portions are very small--you will only get one scoop of ice cream for $4.50--no thanks. Service was average; it was more like rushing us to order on a slow night, but they were quite honest about the food and portions. Sunnyside Restaurant Week October 2020 Since the pandemic started back in March, NYC has been on hold. However, when I saw that Sunnyside was going to have a restaurant week, I was excited to be supporting local business and my beautiful Queens. This brought me some sort of normality. I venture out to try out @ariyoshi_japan restaurant.The food was fresh and delicious and who can pass up a four course dinner for $25. My favorite part was the chicken teriyaki . The service was great and the staff was very friendly and everyone was wearing mask which was a great way to encourage people to be safe even thought we are in a pandemic we can have a bit of normal stuff. This place is phenomenal. I cannot believe I've never been here before. When you first walk in you're automatically greeted and taken to your table. A waitress then shoots right over to you and gives you your menus. They have a lot of beer selections if you don't like saki. There's also some mixed drinks as well,make sure you ask them to be generous on the booze. The decor is very woody with wooden tables and wooden paneling. I was very pleased with the temperature in the room. It felt very cozy even tho we were not in a booth. It was the perfect setting for a valentines meal. Since I was sitting in the aisle I didn't get nervousness about food being spilled on me. The menu has a ton of food to choose from. I spent a few days looking at the menu to figure out what I was going to get. Chicken Katsu was the winner. Our waitress was great and super funny. The wait time for the California rolls was within 4 minutes after placing our order. The main dishes took about 15 minutes to reach our table. Our waiters kept refilling our waters within moments. If you love miso soup you would be pleased to know that it is one of the best I've ever tasted. Their chicken was very crispy and finger licking good. I got a salad with my meal but you better believe the second the soup was given to my significant other I definitely tried it. A 22oz beer was only $4.50 which is super cheap, but will send you to the bathroom before you leave. ::BATHROOM ALERT:: With the amount of people in the restaurant I was expecting it to be super dirty. They have seats outside the bathroom just in case you have to wait. I had to wait until a waitress told me I can use the men's room so of course I did. It was extremely clean and roomy in there. The soap was filled the toilet paper stocked and it did not smell. A+ on the bathroom. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes sushi or this type of food in general. Sunday night were craving for sashimi and there weren't sushi place around I live except Ariyoshi so I gave them a try. It was pretty packed the time I went to have a dinner date. It was packed near bar area as well. Only two waitress I have seen at that busy night. I didn't get greeted when I walked in to the restaurant. Stand there 2 minutes until someone was out to greet us. We got seated to the table, gave us the menu. Their menu had sushi boat for 2 ppl 3ppl and 4ppl I think. I prefer sashimi more then sushi! Why don't they ever make sashimi boat for 2ppl & etc. If they had that I would at least come here twice a week to have sashimi. I ordered sashimi regular which was $26.95 for just 13 pcs. I think for 13 pcs sashimi is just expensive. Other Korean place I could get a big platter for just $60 it comes with side dishes, soup and totally worth it. Ordered tuna Avocado sashimi which was far low rating for this. It came with 3 piece tuna & avocado. They used same sauce they used in salad. The tuna wasn't fresh after half bite I didn't want to eat it because of the smell of fish since I'm very sensitive person. The salad we got was lukewarm! It wasn't cold! Salad are suppose to be crunchy and cold but this was just warm salad. Ordered side of salmon, crab croquette, dragon roll I think, a mojito drink. Crab croquette was just sad experience! It beyond tasted like crab! The only thing I tasted were the cream cheese!!! Oh yeah! Don't fall for picture on shown on yelp or the menu! Trust me! It doesn't come out exactly at the picture! On yelp the crab croquette looked delicious that I wanted to give a try but it was sad experience. The only thing I really liked about this place was the mojito drink & warabi mochi ice cream! Ariyoshi is run by Japanese not by other Asians as is the case with most other Japanese restaurants in Queens. This is unusual in an area where Chinese or Koreans dominate and run sushi restaurants or have Japanese dishes as part of an Asian fusion establishment. To have a real local Japanese restaurant is a welcome benefit in a borough which is not known for authentic Japanese fare. You can find the best Japanese food in New York in Manhattan and Brooklyn but an affordable, reliable and pleasant place like Ariyoshi's is a great find. If you come for lunch (before 2:30 pm) the lunch sets are a good deal. You get a main entree. udon and a choice of soup or salad. Supplement your lunch set with a side order of karaage (fried boneless chicken) and a hamachi sashimi and you're good to go. I favor the katsudon which is a large piece of tonkatsu (panko fried boneless pork chop) over a steamy bowl of rice with an egg sauce made of dashi, mirin, sake and shoyu. It's my favorite Japanese comfort food especially in the winter. If I leave half the rice, I order the light almond tofu fruit float and I leave a very happy camper. Ariyoshi is conveniently located on Queens Blvd. along the 7 train. Can't beat the quality, price and convenience and who would believe in Queens! I am here at least once or twice a month for lunch or dinner. We're regulars and the staff know us well. That's the added plus of having a regular haunt, it's familiar and reliable. read more

Recently moved to the neighborhood and had to try Ariyoshi. My co worker used to go to this restaurant every month from Scarsdale. I have been there almost ten times in three months. Authentic traditional Japanese restaurant. I've had their sushi , ramen , udon , katsu , miso soup , karaage, and tempura. All of which have been amazing. Pricing is very reasonable too. I have gone back a few times to try different items because it always looks crowded so I thought it was a bad night, but it just turns out the food and a really bad. I will list a few things I've eaten and their reviews. sushi boat for two - terrible. Pink tuna, tough white fish and other items I wasn't impressed with. The miso soup was okay yellowtail and scallion roll - "meh". Rice was bit overwhelming and couldn't really taste the fish. Mountain yam appetizer - pan-fried yam that was REALLY undercooked. If you like you yam al dente the this is for you. Comes with an amazing sauce though. Potato croquette - very mushy on the inside and not very flavorful. "Happy hour" - There are $1 beers and sakes which is great, but a $15 minimum but I figured I can order a few apps and make it work. I've been here a good number of times over the years, and service is always fantastic. most dishes come in a very reasonably priced set, with salad or miso soup. I used to love the salad dressing, but last time I was there, it was too sweet. the rolls are very good (spider, crispy scallops) & there are lots of options. the sashimi / raw dishes, however, can be a hit or miss in regards to freshness. for those who like a little bit of everything, bento boxes are under $20, with a special monday to wednesday deal under $15. A Chinese-Korean (Yanbian) acquaintance of ours related this experience: as a sushi chef in Japan for 10 years and working in sushi restaurants in the US he saw how fish was selected at fish markets for use. If the owner was Japanese the best and most expensive portion was chosen. If the owner was Korean then the 2nd best portion of fish was selected. Lastly, if the owner was Chinese then the lesser or least expensive cuts were chosen. This has been our experience as well in terms of the quality of sushi served at a restaurant. Ariyoshi may not be the best Japanese sushi restaurant but they are levels above your typical sushi restaurant in Queens; not saying Korean or Chinese sushi places should be avoided, it is merely observation and experience to manage expectations. He seated my large group of 7 right away and was patient when our last guest ended up being 30 mins late. I really miss my favorite spot for comfort Japanese food. I love their appetizers of crab karoge, agedashi tofu, and fried chicken. Their tempura veggie udon is so comforting, and this is the place that eased me into liking sushi. Philadelphia and spicy tuna rolls are my go-to. I see what people mean when they say there are no good sushi places in Sunnyside. Despite being warned by multiple people, I decided on Ariyoshi for a quick catch up lunch with my friends. We ordered different lunch specials: The Sushi + Udon, Maki, and Pork Cutlet + Curry. All the dishes were mediocre. Not bad, just not good. My favorite thing had to be the hot tea. The curry to rice ratio was a bit off. The curry didn't taste bad, but the consistency was just off...it looked like melted chocolate. Make sure to claim the free Calpico that you get when you spend over $20. I feel like you can never make a final review on a sushi joint without trying their sashimi, but their other dishes were just so mediocre for me, that I feel zero motivation to ever try this place again. read more

On a late Sunday night with fleeting options, I liken my decision to try Ariyoshi through SeamlessWeb to heaving a half-court shot before the buzzer sounds. Both are desperate with minimal chance of success. Of the four rolls I ordered, none are worth mentioning except for how off-putting they were. From the first piece on, the disgust was constant throughout the meal. The sushi rice was soggy and stuck to my teeth, while the fish was bland and tasted like frozen fish. The sauce for the soft-shell crab roll and spicy tuna avocado roll was just a glob of mayo without any kick. If this wasn't a first experience, it would easily be a one-star experience. I'm a sashimi lover. I enjoy raw fish from Japanese restaurants. I used to eat raw fish here but now I prefer raw fish from Yamaguchi restaurant in Port Washington. However, I enjoy noodle soup and cooked food here. I can eat Nabayake-Udon every day from this restaurant. Another favorite of mine is the flounder. They seem healthy enough with not too much sauce. I've been coming to Ariyoshi since I moved to Sunnyside (since 06), but never wrote a review about them because I visit here too often. I'd recommend Ariyoshi to everyone. Great place for large parties. Came here on a weekday before 7pm and they have happy hour apps and some sushi - not so great selection for the sushi happy hour but they're good. The ramen was pretty decent , the seafood ramen seems to be a popular dish. Also, they charge for spicy mayo. read more

Dropped by for lunch during a weekday. The place was half filled. Ordered the fried soft tofu and spicy tonkatsu ramen. Tofu was well made, the ramen flavor was fine, but the presentation could be much better. Service was very good. Very friendly older lady said everything with a smile.
