Food, service, and ambiance was beyond excellent. Enjoyed dinner with my husband and two children same day we checked in for a weekend soccer tournament at the Town and Country. Kids ate pizza and we had NY steak strip and pork shank birria. The table was served with house bread, which was made to order, I could have eaten a loaf all by myself for dinner and let happy. It was so delicious. We also had a couple of drinks, desserts, and lattes. Live music was playing and we sat outdoors and enjoyed our dinner. TL;DR go for the food, not the experience. The food was fantastic. Waygu steak was perfectly prepared. Extremely tender. And reasonably priced at $38. The veal chop was just as good. The spirit-forward cocktails were great too and came with a small carafe that gave you a little extra. They were $18. The unfortunate part of our Saturday night experience was the service. It was slow and unenthusiastic. 10-15 minutes before someone came to the table for the first time. The staff was not knowledgeable and could not provide explanations the food. When things were served, they were quickly placed on the table and the server was gone before saying a word. 10-15 minutes to get a beer (which I switched to because I didn't think a cocktail would make it out). Now, I'm not sure why this was the case. The food was at such a high level; it's really a shame that the experience was so off. Perhaps they were short staffed. Perhaps the staff isn't trained well. I don't know. But the mismatch between food quality and service was odd. For the money, there are many other places to get stellar food AND great service for the same price. I don't think we'll return. If we did go back it'd be because the food was that good. I hope they figure it out. Not sure how I'll know if/when they do. We're rooting for you, ARLO! read more

Came here a few weeks ago and loved the newly renovated hotel grounds. I had to knock down a star due to difficulty finding the place since the maps applications direct you to the back entrance. The new entrance was formerly the back and hard to locate in the dark with the construction going on. Make sure to look at the signs and spot the entrance next the construction which would make your walk to restaurant easier especially if you're wearing heels! Loved the customer service, drinks, and food! The deviled pork jar was good (its served cold), and the sea bass was nicely cooked and seasoned. We had a smoked creme brulee that was amazing! Definitely recommend if its on the menu. I would return again now that I know where to find it! read more

My friends and I were looking for a spot for a double date last minute on a Friday night, which most people know is close to in possible. Somehow we stumbled upon this place and they said they'd be able to accommodate us. We were sat on the patio which overlooked a court yard with fire pits. I must say for a Friday night at 8:30 there were surprisingly a lot of children out and about, which was interesting to say the least. Our sever was very attentive and made sure we were well taken care of from start to finish. The food and cocktails are a bit pricey, but can say confirm both tasted great. With it being so late we decided to just share a few things (all pictured except the Brussels) and emptied each abs every plate. I'm on a carb free diet so I didn't get to try the homemade sourdough bread but not only did it smell amazing the group said it was 5+ star worthy! Didn't have a great experience. Highlight was our server, who really tried to save the day for us! Ordered two cocktails and lamb meatballs, which we got quickly. The meatballs were delicious! After that, it went a bit downhill. The entrees took almost an hour to come out, and overall, they were just not great. We ordered the Charcuterie de Mer, but the person who brought it out to us couldn't tell us what was what on the platter, and the mussels/clams were tough/ropey. The Taste of Ribeye was ok, but all lukewarm (sides too). We got two rounds of cocktails, and waited about 25 minutes for each. Our server did a great job letting us know that things were being prepared, delayed or on the way, so I appreciated that. For a meal at this cost, I expected to be wowed, but wasn't. We were excited to try this restaurant out after seeing that the chef once worked at the French Laundry and other amazing places. Saw online that they had a pre fixe menu on Christmas Eve for $50 so we changed our original reservation and came to Arlo. As you can see, out of over 300 reviews I have seldom given less than 4 stars but unfortunately tonight warranted a negative review. If not for the seafood charcuterie board and the very nice waitress I would have even went lower with just one star. After arriving and asking about the pre fixe menu we were told that someone in marketing screwed up and that they did not have that. We were told many people asked about it, but we would have to order our food al la carte. This should have been a red flag but we were eager to try the food so we ordered al la carte. First, the wait time for food is horrendous. It literally took over an hour to get our entrees. Before that, the charcuterie board took a very long time to come out as well and even then it was missing the Crustini. I ordered the Ribeye, my wife ordered the Goose, and my daughter ordered the porcelet. The Ribeye was overcooked and very tough and the Goose was also overcooked. It wasn't horrible, but would have expected better. We ended up being at the restaurant for over 2 hours. What made it worse was that there was a large table for a big family group with young children that were running around everywhere, opening and shutting the patio door, going up to other tables, and more without adults really supervising them and the restaurant just looked the other way and did nothing about it. It was an overall disappointment for a Christmas Eve dinner in my opinion. The staff was very nice wishing us a Merry Christmas as we left, but for the money spent I seriously wish we would have went with our original choice or any other restaurant for that matter. Arlo, Arlo, Arlo...... where do I begin? You have the potential of being something great. Unfortunately you're just not there yet. But, with a little work and polish it can happen very soon. Since I can't do half stars, I am rounding up to 4 stars, because I did have a great time and really enjoyed the food and drinks. We arrived about a half hour early for the reservation assuming We could be sat early. I was told that they are sticking to reservation times so we will have to wait until the official time of the reservation to be sat. The restaurant appeared to not be very full and my reservation was on their beautiful patio which had plenty of open tables. So this completely irritated me. We then went over to the hotel's bar which has an awesome indoor/outdoor bar. We ordered cocktails and we waited a half hour for our reservation time. The hotel bar was actually really nice the outdoor space of the hotel is beautiful. Once our reservation time had come the hostess graciously sat us on the patio. It quickly occurred to me why we weren't sat early. Despite the restaurant not being full the service staff appeared to be quite busy. I assume they were understaffed for the evening. After sitting for a while at our table we were finally greeted by the waiter who seems frazzled. We quickly ordered cocktails, a bottle of water, and their Sourdough bread. After about 5 minutes the waiter oddly returned to the table asking if we wanted to make a drink order. I was a little confused so I mentioned that we had already ordered cocktails and a bottle of water. He quickly remembered and said he'd be right back with our drinks. He quickly returned with our cocktails but no water. He said the bartender was having trouble finding the bottle of water. The Sour Dough bread arrived shortly thereafter. The bread was hot and delicious. It was served with soft butter, flaky sea salt, and garlic honey which was amazing. The waiter returned again and took our appetizer order. We ordered the Lamb Meatballs and the Duck Prosciutto and Beet Salad. Then we finally got our bottle of water. Shortly after that our appetizers arrived. The Lamb Meatballs were amazing. What was better was their sauce. It was the best thing and the Sour Dough bread was perfect for sopping it up. The Duck Prosciutto and Beet Salad was good. After a few bites I said to my girlfriend how it would be so much better if there was goat cheese. There was supposed to be goat cheese however the way the salad was plated the goat cheese was smeared around the edge of the white plate so I didn't even notice it until I was almost done with the salad. The salad was good however if I was able to enjoy the goat cheese with more of the salad I would have enjoyed it much more. For the main course we decided to share the Maple Leaf Duck and get a side of Potato Pureée, and the Broccolini. The Maple Leaf Duck was delicious. The duck was juicy and flavorful and the Merguez Sausage and Cannellini Cassoulet where out of this world. What confused me were the Baby Turnip and Thumbelina Carrots. They were raw. I am not sure if this was intentional or a mistake. Anyway the raw veggies didn't go well with the rest of the dish. The Potato Purée was good but it had a smoked flavor that just didn't work in my opinion and the Broccolini was just served cold. Service was good despite our waiter being totally slammed so I won't be to critical. One last thing that really bothered me was that Hotel employees which appeared to have no business being in the restaurant kept walking through the restaurant's patio. There were visibly alternative routes to get to where they were going. All in all I enjoyed my Arlo experience and again with a few bits of polishing I think Arlo can be a very special restaurant. I would like to share my experience at the restaurant called Arlo. It was recommended to us and my friends can you play and 11 of us went to celebrate one of the girlfriends birthday. The food was alright I wouldn't say that I can pr can prise it but it was alright, the problem happened, the same night, three people who had ordered a dark got really sick really really sick to the point that they were ready to call 911 .... When we call the restaurant next day, it was no sympathy. No apology .. One of the girls who tried to speak with manager John was told to "stop calling here with your bullshit ever again " Thats a marvellous reaction from the restaurant where we spent almost $1000, and the only reason that I'm doing this for the first time actually it is because I don't want anybody else to go and have the same experience and I hope you will take my little note seriously and think about going there twice read more

Wow! What an incredible Mission Valley gem. ARLO's ambiance, service, drinks and food are so impressive. Would highly recommend for a cute date night or a special celebration. We had the 'Blur' cocktail with coconut cream and tequila. So delicious! And tried a couple other cocktails that were also perfect. And then the best part... the food! This is the most elevated comfort food I've ever had. I was so impressed. Everything we ate (which was a lot, haha) had beautiful plating and incredible depth of flavor. The octopus was hands down the best I've had since I can remember. Perfectly tender, beautifully plated and served with such delicious and unique flavors. The lamb meatballs... MMM. So tasty. Can't wait to try other starters when we come back too. Then my girls and I shared 3 entrees- Scallops, Short ribs, and the pork roll. Each beautifully plated and served with delicious accompaniments. I will definitely be telling people to come here for the short ribs and pork roll. They were done so well and with such elegance for such comfort food. The scallops were delicious too, but those meat dishes will definitely have me coming back to have again. Only minimal critiques were the meatballs and octopus were a bit salty for my pallet. And the scallops could have used a little more acidity. But seriously, I'm a harsh critic -- all in all I still can't believe it took me this long to try ARLO and I'm stoked to find this level of fine dining for a reasonable price right in Mission Valley. My family and I are in town to enjoy San Diego to end the year. We booked rooms at the Town and Country hotel. We were tired from driving into town, so we decided to try out the ARLO restaurant. The hostess was very friendly and inviting. We waited no longer than a few minutes and seated. The manager John Cordero came by to greet us at our table and immediately made us feel welcomed. John knew about every item on the menu and how it was prepared. The Old Fashioned cocktail is a must try. We had several appetizers that were ridiculously good. The menu had a variety of dishes and even served to our children who wanted pizza. My wife ordered the bolognese, and I ordered the scallops and the dry aged New York steak. Fourth visit to Arlo, and even though there were a few bumps, we'll still be back for a fifth. First and foremost, if you don't order the sourdough, you might as well not have even gone. It is absolutely divine. Shatteringly thin crispy crust, warm from the oven, deliciously light and fluffy on the inside. The butter, garlic honey spread, and flaky salt are perfect companions. We also ordered the beet salad. I love the way Arlo treats vegetables. Super fresh and seasonal. They are seasoned appropriately but totally stand on their own. Here's where it got a little shaky, and I definitely felt bad about my part. My husband ordered the duck breast with mulled wine sauce. Nice dish with wintery vibes. Prepared well. I ordered the yellowfin tuna with vegetables. The menu does not say how the tuna is prepared. I assumed tuna would be seared leaving a rare inside. I only took one bite. This tuna came out mostly gray with just the smallest rare center. It was chewy and dry and honestly the maple sauce on tuna wasn't helping. Our waitress was in the middle of helping a large party. But a manager noticed I wasn't eating and asked how she could help. She explained that the tuna was sous vide but that it could be prepared rarer for me. She left to the kitchen. Meanwhile, our waitress comes back and I start to worry I'm just not going to like any tuna that's been sous vide because I like tuna essentially raw. So I changed my order to the pork shank birria. The waitress goes off to the kitchen and now the manager comes back out to tell me the chef will prepare my tuna much rarer and I have to tell her I changed my mind. I feel like "that" customer at this point. Honestly, I guess I was. I definitely felt badly. But, at least to my face, everyone was very nice about it. The pork shank birria is not birria. But dang it was good. Super unctuous and tender. I also loved the cheesy polenta whip that went with it. Just know that it is nothing like traditional polenta. It is super creamy and light with no texture. Just super creamy, cheesy and whipped. I loved it, personally. I thought it was unusual that neither the manager or waitress came back to check on my second entree but, in all fairness, it was pretty busy by this time. We ended our meal ordering the dulce de leche creme brûlée and the cinnamon toast cremeux. I thought it was off-putting that our waitress brought our check before we had even received our dessert. Unfortunately neither dessert hit the right notes for me. The texture of the crème brûlée was just ok, and the cinnamon toast was meh. I didn't care for the cremeux (thick, gloppy, and no chocolate flavor) and the lemon coulis and blackberry that were promised were barely present. I was disappointed because I've had some delicious desserts in the past. All in all, despite some lows, this is still a great dining spot. read more

We had a family brunch here last Sunday, November 17. I absolutely love that there is plenty of parking because they do have a parking garage right next to the restaurant. One of my best friends birthday was here, and FUN FACT my fiancé helped build this place. Delicious coconut margarita...I mean the coconut was a hit!!!! ARLO is the new hot spot in SD! My parents were in town and I wanted to take them somewhere special. I'd heard good things about ARLO and they didn't disappoint! From the moment we got there we were greeted by the general manager and seated out on the patio. Our server was very nice and continually checked in on us throughout the meal. We were exceptionally fortunate to get a personal introduction from Chef Josh Mouzakes. Chef Josh recommended some of his favorites from the menu, like the lamb meatballs and the Boursin raviolis, and even surprised us with a giant platter including the cowboy ribeye, smoked salmon pastrami, and glazed heirloom carrots. We also tried the pulpo, avocado shrimp, margarita flatbread, and had some amazing drinks before topping it off with the s'mores cheesecake. I've been wanting to eat at Arlo for a long time and my wife and I were finally able to get a evening off together. We paid for babysitting for our 2 babies and headed down on a Wednesday night. We unfortunately hit traffic for about 50 minutes and had to adjust our open table reservation up a bit. We parked and walked to the restaurant only to find the doors shut and locked. No sign or anything. We wondered around to the bar and asked what was going on. He said they had some weekend events at the restaurant and decided to close tonight. Nothing on the website, nothing on social media. Just a big middle finger. It was a gut punch. We don't get out too much with a 6 month old and a 2 1/2 year old, especially to a nice restaurant. I can't believe I can make a reservation on open table to a restaurant that isn't open. What an absolute waste of our time and money. I called the next day to let them know and no one seemed to care. The food was fine if a little lacking in flavour but here's the rub. We ordered the jerk veggie churasco which promises "Grilled Fennel, Squash, Peach, Pineapple, Potato, Herb Coconut Dip, Quinoa Tabbouleh" We ordered it because of the fruit, grilled with these veggies should have been great. Platter arrives (looks good) but there is no peach, no pineapple, no fruit. No explanation, no other fruit, but instead some onion which isn't fruit. When we asked our server the response was "Oh, perhaps it out of season, or in the sauce (the fruit)". No word with the chef, no explanation, no adjustment. A shame overall....Arlo looks great but lacks, when you have an eclectic menu bring the dish to the table as advertised or let the server know you're lacking ingredients. It left a bad impression and was not the meal we paid for. Not sure we'll go again and after a year in lockdown it's a bad return to SD dining. read more

We had the lamb for appetizer which was really good but the steak and " flatbread" ( more of a pizza than a flatbread) were quite mediocre. Our whole party of 8 San Diego locals could not believe how great this place is!!! The ambience is trendy and chic, yet California-relaxed. Fire pits outside, beautiful indoor-outdoor bar that was classy, retro vibe too. Poolside too, so it is a perfect place for summer evenings. Food is amazing!!!! Chef is from French Laundry (I believe?). We each ordered an entree, then shared the sides. Halibut was huge and perfectly prepared in the best mysterious sauce. Pasta Bolognese served in a bread bowl could have fed 4 people easily. the Beehive dessert, the Smores dessert, and the little ice cream sandwiches... all amazing.
