It's taken me quite some time to write this review after having dinner here and it's not because it was bad, it just wasn't anything spectacular. It's basic BBQ, the sauces are fairly generic and the sides are nothing special. The portions are large and the service is friendly. Would I come here as a regular? No. Would I come here again if the mood hit me? Yes. TIP: Come here if you're in the mood for BBQ, happen to be in the neighborhood and don't want to go to another restaurant. It certainly doesn't suck! read more

You're kidding me right ?! What the hell did we just do. This was disgusting not BBQ and so overpriced...hungry man BBQ tv dinner is much bigger and much better ...20 dollars for some canned beans and one piece of chicken thigh. It was disgusting ... never ever ever again. We paid 85.00 for 3 sodas and 3 super super small plates . My daughter got pulled pork there was not one piece if meat it was 100% fat. Now I see why no one was in there. I will stick to dickies or famous Dave's.... read more

The sort of place you go if you love Meat and Carbs - you won't find salad's and plates of veggies here! The food is fairly decent but not the sort of place I get excited to eat at but it's a good last minute choice if I can't decide what to have for dinner and I'm having a 'naughty' day. Fancy a drink with your meal? They recently started serving wine too! Ordering is like cafeteria style. Order at the till point them take a seat with a little pager then you food gets placed in the window where you collect it yourself, drinks are self serve too. *Birthday Tip* Join their email club and about 10 days before your Birthday you get an email with a printable coupon for a free Milkshake or Dessert. The coupon is valid for 3-4 weeks so you don't have to go on the day of your Birthday. According to their website, Armadillo Willy's BBQ wanted a "100% wood-fired barbecue like we had found in legendary joints like Louie Mueller BBQ in Taylor, TX and Black's BBQ in Lockhart, TX." I've been to Louie Mueller and Black's. I love Texas BBQ and feel like almost impossible to find it's equal outside of Texas. That being said, by California standards, these guys aren't doing a bad job. It smells right and that takes you at least 45% of the way there. The food is good. I was so afraid of trying brisket outside of Texas and having it be a letdown that I got a Patty Melt and shockingly it wasn't greasy! My only complaint is that it didn't seem like the hamburger was seasoned at all. I tried my dining companions Pulled Pork which was good, moist but needed a significant amount of hot sauce to give it some flavor. Everything here needs a kick in the ass, flavor-wise. If you know Texas BBQ you know it pulls no punches when it comes to flavor. The brisket can be seasoned with just salt and pepper or it can have a rub, but either way it comes off the smoker with that salty, slightly burned outside that has flavor that makes you moan when you put it in your mouth. The tots needed some Tony Chachere's just sprinkled liberally. I wish the menu was smaller and they focused more on big flavor. Choice of meat, sides and then grab pickles, onions and bread. Simple is the best way to go with Texas BBQ. Great selection of beer so that was nice to see. Overall, definitely headed in the right direction. read more

The food is amazing. We ordered two dinner plates. Tri Tip and the Brisket with Garlic Parmesan fries, tots, peanut coleslaw and beans. The servings were generous and it was delicious. You can order a large or small plate and for the brisket, my husband ordered it lean (you have the option). The peanut coleslaw has an Asian flare and was wonderful too. I cannot believe this place only has 3-1/2 stars. I highly recommend Armadillos Willy's. I will return. read more

When I lived in the Bay Area, Willy's was one of the places to go because there just weren't many other choices in the immediate area. Well, I don't live there anymore and I do have access to some decent places but I ended up here to pick up some barbecue sauce for friends and I have to say, I didn't much care for the facelift that the place got since I was there last. You'd have to have been there before the changes to understand so just know that now it feels cramped and isn't set up like a community, or family style setting. And the food was a little pricey for the amount The food - well, little on the dry side. A little on the small side. A little on the forgettable side as well. Must be why I didn't think of this place while I've been gone and only remembered it because I went here on a mission. Sauce for a friend. read more

Ordered the "Trinity" - 4 ribs, 2 slices of 18 hr brisket, 1 sliced sausage accompanied with 'sweet' beans and french fries. Meats are tasty but nothing to 'wow' about....the 18 hr brisket had a mushy texture and missing smokiness....should be good on its own but needed the bbq sauce to give it any flavor. Sweet beans tastes more like a soup than a side of beans...but maybe that's how texas beans is. Trinity + cornbread ($2.50) + 2 drinks = $27...whoa! read more

I haven't had BBQ in a long time and my buddy suggested we try Armadillo Willy's which was within walking distance from his apartment. The place was packed when we arrived, which was a good sign to us that it would be some pretty tasty stuff. I ordered the Texas BBQ Rib Family Pack ($30) togo for my buddies and I to share, which came with a full slab of ribs, 4 corn muffins, corn salad, and beans. I thought the ribs were a little dry but the muffins were pretty good though I do love corn bread and missed out on the real thing. The corn salad was delicious as were the beans, which had bacon in them. Overall it was just ok and I have had much better BBQ elsewhere. Service for our togo order was pretty quick but it wasn't somewhat unclear as to what sides were included in the package since they're all grouped together on the menu. I tried to order the sweet potato fries but it turns out that they are a premium item, as were the regular fries. Seems to me that those would be staples and should have been included, so that was kind of disappointing. The place was packed when I went so they're clearly doing something right. There are some dog-friendly covered tables outside within the enclosed windscreen which is nice since it can pretty windy in the area. I just wasn't terribly impressed by my experience. The food is great, which is why I go there. However, I had an incident last week where I ordered around 65$ of food-to-go consisting of brisket and ribs. As I was waiting for my order an employee came up and I believed mentioned my name and gave me what I thought was my order. When I got home, I realized that it was someone else's order and only had the brisket. I came back a few days later and tried to get the ribs part of my order. The women remembered me and said that it was my fault that I got the wrong order. She was quite insistent that I would not be getting my ribs. Now I am 78 years old, a Disabled Vietnam Vet and my hearing is not that great and am partly responsible for the missed communications. Armadillo Willies can refuse to do the right thing and give me the ribs I paid for, and I can refuse to not tell anyone about it. A lot better than the reviews are making it out to be. The food is solid. At least the things I've tried. Their burgers are delicious. Especially their bacon cheeseburger. It's cooked perfectly and has great flavor. I've of my favorite things to get is their Santa Maria Tri Tip Sandwich with Pico de Gallo. It's served on garlic bread. If you don't care about your diet, and want something that tastes amazing, than give it a try. They have a lot of sides that are all great as well. I love their garlic Parmesan fries and Texas toast. My favorite is their Caesar salad. It comes with croutons made from cornbread! It was a great surprise when I ordered it. Also the Texas trinity plate is great if you like having a variety. It comes with brisket, ribs, sausage and your choice of two sides. I get Texas toast on the side and make a brisket sandwich. Also, when you order brisket they'll ask you if you want it lean or juicy, get it juicy. It has fat but does taste great. Also has fast service and ticket times. read more

Online order on their website. Never again, over Price for what you receive. You don't get what you pay for, small portions of brisket and peanut slaw for $15, five dollar extra for the sausage. Everything I've eaten here has been satisfying. Although it just doesn't give me that feeling of "awesome food or value for money spent". For what I pay, you expect a certain quality and Armadillo brings that, but nothing more. I feel that everything is measured out to the fraction of an once, nothing more. I admit it's pretty good for the mid-peninsula, but I have to compare it with my favorite place Smoking Pig in San Jose. Willy's is busy because it's got a great location with large business's and homes near by, and without much competition. read more

We have been coming to this location for last 8 years, since we moved here. Before that Los Altos was our spot. Service is great, place is clean and stuff is friendly. Problem is that prices increased as much as 50% on some menu items, and quality and quantity decreased. Fewer pieces of meat, burgers are not what they used to be and side dishes are getting smaller and smaller. We are longtime customers, but we are not going back anytime soon. It's just not worth it. read more

I was fortunate that this bbq restaurant was an easy walk from my hotel (Hilton Garden Inn). The bbq - I had the East Texas Pulled Pork sandwich with spicy peanut slaw as a side - was very tasty. They have a decent beer selection too - always nice to see some quality local and regional brews. This place is located in a shopping center so there's plenty of parking if you drive. If you're a bbq fan, it's worth a stop here. I'll definitely be back. read more

Good juicy BBQ. Got the Texas Trinity Plate. The jalapeño sausage is surprisingly tasty. Cornbread is moist served with apple butter. Fries have a healthy dusting of Cajun seasoning. I've tried take out & dine in. Both have been a good experience. I definitely recommend this place. read more

I ordered a lean brisket and I got 5 bites of meat. It was mainly fat. We drive 7 hours to visit our daughter and we normally love this restaurant. I used to come here a lot when I moved here about four or five years ago. But like all good things,shit will be crappy eventually. Earlier tonight,we ordered over 70 bucks of food plus tips. You would think with all the request that they asked for you to choose. Like extra crispy tots or Texas toast. That the employees that packed these food would be intelligent enough to put it in a paper bags than a plastic one and on top of that. Tied it together the bag where the fucking tots and toast are a soggy pissed bread and pissed tots in it's own condensation. Talk about hiring some "I don't give a fucks "ppl to work. Common sense that most ppl should have seem like they don't have any. Why do I even bother coming to a place that all they did was just not give a two shit to handle my meal. I tipped them for packing my food like I am begging for a free food or something. No cares,no thoughts,no common sense,no pride in their work and you can tell. I was a waitress once for ten years while helping my parents and their business. I took pride in understanding why I have to work hard for tip. I packed food like I was the recipient of that meal. I put thoughts into making sure that if it's fried stuff. Open paper bags and anything liquid. Double bags it in plastic. My boyfriend has a bad habit of starting the car and driving BEFORE we've even decided where we're going. So I'm listing off foods and land on BBQ, with the closest place being Armadillo Willy's. Boyfriend got the Baby Back Ribs plate with beans and Texas toast. I don't care for beans, but wow, that Texas toast is something! First time trying it and although I'm sure there's plenty of other places that does it better, Armadillo Willy's was pretty dang good. I got the Ribs + One (I forgot if I got the tri-tip or the brisket). Both were great, tender and juicy. They were lacking in sauce but I just went and grabbed extra. For sides I got their cajun fries and potato salad - loved both. The plate was pretty big so I had left overs to take home. Overall kind of pricey, but the food was good. read more

What is all that in between those buns? Pulled. Pork. This is pulled pork sandwich, BUT requested "make it a big Willy" which is double meat to any sandwich oh and I also got tots . Was "make it a big Willy?" it worth it? Yeah I think it definitely was, but when you add more meat, that means you're about to get food coma and probably the meat sweats lmao anyways it's a pretty classic pulled pork sandwich, meat was great, the toasted golden buns were solid and easy to bite into, and the tots were pretty on the spot tots. Also their hot sauce selection is they're made more to compliment the BBQ sauces rather than burn a hole in your stomach tbh, but they were honestly really good additions to their BBQ sauces. I'm not a big meat eater but when I do eat it, it better be good. We needed up here just because we were staying at a hotel in the area and boy was it a find! The restaurant has a slightly upscale casual atmosphere where you order at the counter, pick up your food, and find a seat. The ambiance was great and the food even better. I ordered the Texas BBQ ribs with the spicy peanut slaw and corn salad. The ribs were seasoned perfectly: so perfectly that my dad almost bought some of their rub. They have three different BBQ sauces you can add that are self serve up front: mild, jalapeño, and honey. Our favorite was the mild. The ribs were big and tender and I loved every bite. I was only able to eat half so the leftovers will be a great treat tonight! The coleslaw was solid and the corn salad had that hit of acidity that really freshened up my palette upon each bite. Half of us got the ribs and the other half got the brisket. I tried a bite and it was also delicious! Very tender and flavorful. I also stole some cornbread from my dad's plate and loved it. It's likely you cannot go wrong with your ordering choice here. My mom raves about this place after our meal and she really loves BBQ. I got the belly buster tray this weekend and was a little disappointed. The mac and cheese, bbq fries, and cornbread were amazing! Parts of the chicken and brisket were ok, but there were some dry pieces. The ribs were disappointingly dry. The pulled pork and sausage were pretty good. 4/10 would go again only for sides. read more

I loved the new menus and the way that they presented the food. There sweet potato fries are delicious. HOWEVER, I was not a fan of the sandwich I ordered. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with slaw on top. I liked the presentation, but the meat was a bit too chunky and there wasn't enough bbq sauce in it. I didn't even taste much of the slaw either. I was very disappointed to find out that they no longer sold milkshakes. I'm not aware if it is just in this location, or if it's in every armadillo willy's. I hope not! read more

I was skeptical of eating here as I'm from NC and still reside there where BBQ is a religion. I Yelped places near buy for a better option but when I got out of my car I smelled the smoke and got back in my car and headed for Armadillo's. When I walked in I saw the large smoker which has its own room and entrance. It was big, black and worn which was a good sign for this Tarheel gal. The staff was ok. Not the typical southern hospitality but I'll give em a pass b/c looking at the menu this is not the traditional BBQ joint. For instance, we in the south have staple menu items you don't mess with and one of those is slaw. It's either sweet or oniony. It does not have a peanut or spicy flavor to it as the menu states for Armadillo's so I skipped it as I thought that was a red flag. So I ordered the ribs, pintos and cajun fries. Any BBQ joint worth it's weight in hickory wood is judged on its tender ribs (no sauce just a rub) and its brisket. I waited until I got back to my hotel to rip into the box but I munched on the fries in the car. I give them points for putting the fries in a separate bag but the taste was weird. The ribs on the other hand were EXCELLENT! Tender, juicy with a little char...yummy. But what really surprised me were the pinto beans. They were tender, filled with smoked pork and they had a saucy BBQ flavor. Local Cali ppl, you should be lining up to eat at this place!!!! read more

I came here for lunch for the first time in years. The food is pretty good, the only thing is that it is on the pricey side for what you get. So I wouldn't call it great value. I shared a Chicken sandwich and a Pulled Pork sandwich with a friend and we both got tots as our side. The cost for that is about $15.75 for takeout and does not include a drink. I thought the pulled pork was better than the chicken and that they should provide extra sauce with the tots (rather than just ketchup). Health wise, this is basically the equivalent of fast food. If I'm paying that much, I'd probably prefer 5 guys for a heavy (pricier) fast food meal. read more

We also ordered fried bun with condensed milk for dessert and it was delicious. The buns were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. So glad we stopped by to give this place to try. If you're a fan of skewers, I'd recommend coming here since they have different types of meat. Prices are reasonable but of course everything adds up when you keep ordering. The ordering process was fast, but anything beyond that was an absolute SLOG. We ordered a value meal and hangar steak during happy hour, and the vegetables and soups came out at a decent pace. We then proceeded to wait about 20 minutes before waving over a manager to ask about our mere SEVEN plates of beef! SIX plates came and you might be wondering why I'm missing one. That's because our waiter forgot our hangar steak and midway through our meal, I had to double check with my waiter to make sure I wasn't tripping. Turns out I wasn't, and they served me my steak instantly. Weird how it took 20mins for some raw meat to come out, but I guess after escalating to a manager our meats came out promptly. This chain establishment can get a pass on its slow service. But let's talk about grill changes. No one came by for a grill change when clearly the flames were getting big from the oil and grease in the meats, and the top being absolutely blackened. We had to flag down the manager again since we did not see one person carrying grill changes. The only time they appeared promptly without asking is when they cleared our table. After receiving the check they started to wipe where I was resting my arms before I even had time to gather my belongings. Let that sink in. Overall this place absolutely stunk in terms of service and overall experience. At least Gyu-Kaku has great quality control on their meats and flavors, but the service here is very, very lacking. I will probably not come back to this establishment.

Having been going to Austin every year for the last 13 years for the F1 race in October and having had true Texan bbq at the Salt Lick in Driftwood and Terry Black and Franklin, I can honestly say the we were quite disappointed, regardless of the fact the the meal cost $160. A.I. hallucinated again when I asked about the best smoked BBQ in the Bay Area. For the people who know, don't bother. Very disappointed. My aunt and I went to Armadillo Willy's last night to bring my grandfather for Monday night all you can eat ribs. There was a sign on the door saying that they will close for their employee holiday party @ 8. They told us and the many people that were behind us in line that they were out of ribs. We were all very disappointed and had to decide if we wanted to eat there anymore. We decided to just order off the menu since we were already there and for the convenience for my grandfather. We ordered 2 briskets plates (the shredded one) and one pulled pork plate. When we got our plates the portions were so pathetic. One plate had two big rice like scoops and the other plate had two little kid sized ice cream scoops. The pulled pork was really dry. On top of all this, we saw them giving out rib refills. Yeah! I know you want to go home and get ready for your party, but don't lie and disappoint your customers. You just lost a handful last night. read more

I recently visited Armadillo Willy's for a team lunch and it was a fantastic experience for us. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, perfect for enjoying some hearty comfort food. We ordered their belly buster platter to share. Brisket was tender and flavorful, with just the right amount of smoky goodness. The ribs practically fell off the bone and were perfectly seasoned. Chicken was juicy, I also tried the pulled pork, which was ok but paired great with their tangy house bbq sauce. Their tater tots are a must, crispy on the outside, light on the inside. Their potato salad was ok, but forgot to take a picture of it. The staff was friendly, efficient, and made sure we had everything we needed. Our food came out quickly despite the restaurant being a little busy during the lunch rush, which was a pleasant surprise. This is a solid, chain bbq joint that should definitely be on your list. The place looked dead...but that may be because of the weekday?? Anyways, the waitress seemed friendly. I ordered a tender beef brisket Sammy with a side of Mac and cheese. I ordered the beef brisket to come 1/2 fatty and 1/2 lean. The meat was delicious!!! I just didn't like the bun that it came in, I believe that it took the meats flavor away, so I decided to eat it without the bun. But I'm here for the breakfast burrito, so I came back as promised. As for the burrito: I'm glad I gave it a try. It's spartan to the core. No frills, no indulgence, no-nonsense, just a hearty meal. At nearly a pound, it's a beast packed with eggs, bacon, and cheese (hold the bell peppers). But the thing was heavily peppered, black peppered. This was a to-go order, and in true no-nonsense fashion, it came with two single-ply napkins. And that's it. Unfortunately, no extra options are available - no avocado, no sour cream, no nada. There's also no salsa inside the burrito or on the side, which left me to pull out the emergency bottle of hot sauce from bottom drawer of my desk. Despite the lack of options, it was filling. No question there. It holds its value, but if it came with fresh salsa and the option for avocado (not guac) or even sour cream, I'd much more likely to be all in. Oh, KUDOS to the cook for cooking the bacon from scratch. It wasn't carcinogenic crispy, but tender and actually delicious! I wish this pit stop the best and think you should try it for yourself to decide. But for me, I feel like my time on this menu has come to an end.
