almost everything is bbq'd until it's dry as dried hay. to compensate, copious amounts of bbq sauce is slathered over the meat. the sauce is tasty and tangy...which is good because it somewhat masks the moistureless meat. potato salad is decent. but i'd prefer more potatoes and less mayo. there is nothing texas about their texas toast. it's not even thicker than a normal slice of white bread! prices aren't exactly cheap either. for a mixed plate of bbq meats, it can run you up to 16-17 bucks a plate. even a chopped chicken sandwich is 7.50 (and it's more of a burger than a sandwich). the shredded cheese is unmelted...which is a pet peeve of mine. why bother shredding the cheese in a sandwich? wouldn't it be easier and less messy just to put a slice of cheese? i do however, like the roll of paper towel in the middle of the table...cuz god knows when you're eating bbq, you need a huge napkin. read more

There's really not much to say about this place other than the fact that they serve decent AND consistently good BBQ (and awesome parmesan garlic fries, too!). Eh? They're OK. I love BBQ, but this would not go out of my way for this place. They have 10% discount for AAA, and there's usually a 2-for-1 or something similar discount for this place in the mailers. Food comes out fairly quick, which is good, because I don't have to keep my youngest occupied until the food comes. Pork ribs are moist and tasty, but like David P., I like the meat to fall off the bones. The beef brisket is a little dry for me. The brisket is good in a sandwich, after you add more sauce. Sure, you're not going to confuse Willy's with that hole-in-the-wall barbecue joint with the 100 year old secret sauce recipe... but they're a full notch up from the sort of fast food places that are their mall-based competition. I have gone back a few times assuming it can't be as bad as I imagined, but I keep getting stood corrected. It IS that bad. Meat on ribs is supposed to fall off the bone with ease. Their meats are so grizzled and dry that you have to gnaw it off. Bean side dish is soupy and bland. Yeach! Here's my deal. I like armadillo willys. Love tri-tip tuesday, love the corn bread, love just about anything on the menu. I have been to the locations in, cupertino, san jose *when it was still open*dublin, pacifica and san mateo. I dont dont know maybe Im just being a little dramatic here but after my last visit to the one in San Mateo to actually change out a tv display for them I never wanted to go back and eat ever again. When I walked into the back area to see where this item was we were supposed to hang I found it to be a dirty ass ,greasy floored unsanitary mess. Unfortunately i was so taken by this that I never want to eat at another Willys again, which sucks because i really do like them. Here is what I saw. A Visable amount of grease and residue on the floor. I know they smoke meats and whatnot and that happens but this is not from a day of smoking of chicken. My shoes had a film on them for about 2 days because its was actually slick enough to fall. They had a bucket of mop water sitting next to a bag of onions and potatos which had some onion spilling onto this dirty ass floor. they had a hairbrush sitting ontop of a bucket of potato salad. Cheese waiting to be cut that had been sitting out so long it had started to darken around the edges. The worst of it all is I was walking around with the manager who didnt seem slightly phased by any of this. So because of this I know have an image of willys that i cant erase i think of the times i ate there and wonder if thats where my food was. Maybe someday I can get a peak again at whats up and renue my love for willys until then this relationship is over. read more

It's great barbecue but honestly, your getting quality and not quantity. I actually think the proportions are fine and getting more would just be left on the plate or just stuffing myself to finish. I usually get the Tri-tip but I have tried the Prime Rib, it's comparable but I prefer the tip. My wife likes the pulled pork and my kids are still burger eaters. The sides are ample size helpings and my favorite is the lime cilantro corn but everything on the menu is good. It's pricey but it's still a step up from Chillis, Red Robin, or Fridays. It's a nice change of pace so give it a try if you're shopping near Fashion Island. read more

I normally go here to have the small BBQ plate with corn bread. I don't know about you guys, but I think the cornbread with the cinnamon butter is pretty darn amazing! I'll admit that I was very impressed by this restaurant - it far exceeded my expectations for a seemingly random place surrounded by big-box stores. We got a BBQ plate of a half slab of baby back ribs with the two sides of fries and the spicy peanut slaw, and a small BBQ plate of brisket with onion rings. Everything was excellent. The meats were VERY lightly sauced but came with a side of sauce, which was great. brisket: quite exceptional. It was amazingly tender and I was glad we got the "juicy" cut rather than lean, even though it was a bit fatty at the edge (but it was easy to eat around this, or give to a more appreciative eater). Delicious. ribs: Also very good - quite tender and a nice bit of smokiness without overwhelming everything. They were maybe a little on the dry side but we still liked them a lot. onion rings: quite tasty - maybe the onions could have been cooked a tad more, but I wasn't complaining. fries - these were notably good as well - far better than most, and quite abundant. They were a little on the salty side, but we liked them and there were plenty to share. spicy peanut slaw - I liked that this was a bit unique. It wasn't TOO spicy but was tasty. We're used to paying a decent amount for bbq since it's so meat heavy, so I didn't have a problem with the price, but the brisket portion was a tad smaller than I expected (although to be fair, we did order the small!). Next time I would definitely get the bigger size! We got our food to go, as the restaurant was just a bit smoky. Why all the bad reviews? It's not great, but where else can I get all I can eat ribs on a Monday night? I guess I'll have to search Yelp a little deeper. I say the ribs aren't so bad... a bit expensive even if it's all you can eat only because I really can't eat that much. You get about 3 ribs to start, then they will give you little tatertot trays of 2 or 3 ribs at a time after that. I think I went there for 4 Mondays in a row last summer and I remember the meat was moist and tender enough that it fell right off the bone. Their spicy peanut slaw is the best side ever... when I order and they say pick three sides, I say, "peanut slaw. times THREE." The booths and the picnic table covers can get pretty sticky and so can the condiment bottles. Good thing they have a big roll of Brawny on a dowel right at the table, and you get wet wipes. I picked up a big order today and found that Jessie must be their number one team member! He is so full of energy and is great with the customers. I told him I could carry my order to my car by myself and he told me he wouldn't take no for an answer and insisted on helping me out to my car. Food is pretty good. They have great corn muffins. They have a decent menu with all of the meats and sides, but some place like this wouldn't last in Texas because the "Real Texas BBQ" wouldn't fool anyone. One of the staples of Texas BBQ is beef brisket, and if you can't do that right then it isn't really worth exploring much else. Well it was edible here, but it wasn't really very tender. I must be really lucky. but in the bad way. This was the third time I have attempted to enjoy a meal at Armadillo Willy's. Seriously don't anyone I know ever convince me to eat here again. Today I was hoping to enjoy a nice pulled pork sandwich... I had visions of soft succulent meat melting in my mouth - tangy sweet sauce dripping on my fingers. What I got was a griddle seared sesame seed bun with a small handful of COLD, DRY pork with a drizzle of sauce on it. The most exciting bit was the finger sized flap of grizzle hiding inside. the best part was a side of beans - I don't quite think it is as good as store bought chili, but it was a hell of a lot better than the sandwich. it was my stomach that demanded I write this review. It's slightly upset. My previous visit was similarly un-tasty. I think it was a tri tip or brisket sandwich... it was at least warm, but again... not much there dry and flavorless.... and the gal at the register recommended the corn as a side saying it was spicy... Spicy not. I swear it was canned corn sprinkled with minute minces of red bell pepper. I tried to spice it up with their signature hot sauce.... but it was like a vinegar bath for my food. Good place to order Texas Style BBQ take out/catering. Every year we order BBQ for our company founder's day party, everyone always looks forward to the large portions of BBQ Chicken, Ribs and Pulled Pork Plus who can forget the fresh baked corn muffins. I was asked to order food for a meeting (about 13 people), I had always used there online ordering which is great but can only be done for orders of 25 people or more. I checked out the Menu online and found the Family Size Orders to be just what I needed. I needed to order several of the same one and they were happy to combine in larger trays. The food from here (inside the restaurant or catering) is always great, lots of flavor and your moneys worth. I just think this might not be an everyday kind of place if your watching your calories. read more

Some folks like Willy's and some don't. I'm one that does--it's pretty good. The price is a bit steep for your food, but you can get a really big plate of barbecued meat here--I like to get a plate of ribs, chicken, and sides. I do NOT recommend their brisket--it's about as fatty as bacon. Tastes okay, but there's almost as much fat as meat there. The hamburgers are mediocre, and left me feeling like I wasted an opportunity to have their tasty ribs again. Yes, the ribs and chicken are definitely the way to go, especially with their BBQ sauce. Went here for lunch. My bbq smoked boneless skinless chicken thigh sandwich was very good as was my mac n cheese although I think the mac n cheese seems like a small portion. I liked my ribs very much. and going back to get more at first seemed unreasonable as you only got 3 ribs, but looking back, i only got refilled once. Tex toast -was interesting since the bread was really soft. Corn Salad - probably the 2nd healthiest side on there next to the side salad, but just about right with a slight lack of flavor. Armadillo Willy's biggest downfall is its lack of consistency. One day it's dabomb.com, on another it's barely mediocre. One day you get your food before you're even done filling up a soda and the next day half your lunch hour has passed and all you have to show for it is said soda and a buzzer. Honestly, if it weren't for my coworkers' penchants for chik'n-n-ribs (actually called "Lone Star Chicken & Texas BBQ Rib Combo" but my version sounds better) and Boca Burgers and my occasional craving for singed animal flesh, I would probably go here only once a month versus the current....oh....WEEKLY visits. Coming here is like being in a bad relationship: When it's bad it's bad, but when it's good it's REAL good. And you just keep wanting to give it ONE MORE CHANCE. My friend wanted to go to this place so I said why not, it's not real Texas BBQ but decent 3 star. That was then but now they changed it a bit. I really like the sausage, brisket, ribs combo and coming from Texas that was closed to it. I really don't think real Texas BBQ would go too well in the Bay Area, it's usually smoked a long time and to be honest, briskets tend to go dry, even at well known famous places in Texas from Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin and in between the long road that I used to travel for photography. Of the three combo, the sausage seemed to be slightly better, but just slightly. I really like that they ask if you want the brisket lean or juicy, meaning with a little bit of fat. This former Texan say it's closed enough to Texas style, just don't go in with an attitude that you know real BBQ and y'all (you guys) be OK. This is the place you go for food when you need sustenance for basic survival. If you go here expecting the BBQ to be good, you will be sorely disappointed. The meat tastes as if they opened it from the plastic moments before heating it up in the microwave. To make matters worse the pricing for the food is off. I ordered the Lunch plate with the ribs. This dish comes with toast and two side dishes. Price $10.95. I also ordered a side of traditional ribs, price $3.95. The amount of ribs I got with each order was the same. Thus, if you do go, then get a side of ribs and save yourself nearly $8. By the way there was no difference in taste whatsoever between the two rib dishes. Party foul. It's been a while since I came here but things have slightly changed. I got the Tuesday special which was a tri tip sandwich. It was alright but I liked mine with hella bbq sauce, haha. When I got my food though, they actually put it in a plastic woven basket. The garlic fries was in this cone shaped thing. I guess they are really stepping up with their presentation. Smell that? You will definitely smell the smoke as soon as you enter, and you will smell like smoke after you leave. OMFG! SO GOOD! My hubby and I used to go here when we first started dating. He would rave about their juicy burgers and warm soft bun. Their 1/2 off burger nights are the best. Came here for lunch with some coworkers. The reputation of the brisket and BBQ ribs preceded the visit, so I had some sort of expectation. Service is standard, order and wait to pick up your food when your buzzer thing starts lighting up. The cashier who took my order was very bubbly and friendly. The wait time was good, my food came out promptly. Prices are a bit higher than average, but not by much. I ended up getting the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with the original sauce and a side of spicy peanut slaw. The bread was a buttered bun, which was delicious. There wasn't enough BBQ sauce, so I had to get two small containers worth. The slaw wasn't very spicy, but had a good flavor, which the peanuts probably contributed to. Overall, decent lunch spot, although it wouldn't be my first choice. I've had a lot better pulled pork sandwiches and slaw. and for the price, I'd rather go elsewhere. read more

I was Armadillo Willy's biggest fan! I been eating here at least once a week for the past 5 years. Therefore, no one is more disappointed than I to see how much their quality AND quantity have gone down. Not only food but also the service has been dismal. Although I've seen the portions decrease over the years, last time was the worst! Even more appalling was when I talk to the manager about the portion of of the items being ridiculously small, he only looked at me with a smirk and said, "Yeah, we decreased the portions." Then, without so much as an apology, he literally walked off! Gone are the days when the restaurant manager used to make the rounds to make sure that customers were doing alright, the manager we talk to couldn't care less! I shouldn't have expected much from a BBQ join in a strip mall, but I needed to eat in the area, so I took the chance. There were a few main problems: My chicken sandwich was so chintzy, that it covered slightly more than half of the roll. I brought it to the attention of the cooks and asked that they give me some more, since there was so much exposed bread. They got someone who could sort of speak English to rudely tell me that I wouldn't be getting anymore. I paid $9 for chicken that couldn't even cover a roll...... Their "pitcher" of beer was about as big as a big glass in some restaurants and poured almost 3 glasses. So I'm no expert on BBQ, but I have spent months in the South on different deployments, so I know a little about BBQ. I'll start with the environement of the place. It doesn't really feel like a Texas BBQ place. It feels way too cheesey. It seems like whoever designed the decor has never been to Texas, and only knows of Texas through movies. A painting of a cowboy, some cowboy hats here and there...but no real feeling of being in Texas. So we were a party of three sharing the Belly Buster, their spread of every type of meat they have available plus three sides. those sides were the beans, french fries, and peanut slaw. The first thing I noticed after I paid 60 bucks for the drinks and food was the fact that there was no sweet tea! NO SWEET TEA!! How can a place call itself Texas BBQ have no sweet tea!?! Now I bet there are some people that will read this and question why I bring up the problem of no sweet tea...those people have never been to a southern BBQ before. They have some awful flavored tea and regular tea, plus their PEPSICO products. The food was prepared pretty quickly. It all looked really good. Even though there was a lot of choices, there really wasn't that much food of each type. It says it could feed four, but there was not four servings of brisket, only a few slices. The ribs were decent, nothing special, chicken was really good, very juicy. The brisket did have a lot of fat on it, and it wasn't very superb, but it was good. The pulled pork was dry. It seemed like it was drained of all it's juices before it was placed on the platter. The sausage was very good as well. For the sides, the beans are amazing, bits of bacon in it just add great flavor. the fries, were so-so, and the slaw was just different. I could do without the peanuts. Like the food here, and the service is great. The order takers usually greet us with a smile. The barbecue is almost always right on, and when it isn't just let them know and they'll try to make it right by you. With all that said, I'm taking off a point from perfection for the following reasons: This site stopped serving hot water which I like to drink with fatty foods such as their delicious brisket or ribs. Evidently someone stupidly complained that the hot water was too hot so they even stopped serving it to their regular customers like us. Do not like the new metal chairs which are cold on the butt when you first sit on them. It takes away from the "down home" rib joint feeling; there's a dissonance. We were fortunate that after we sat on the chairs occupants of a booth left and we hurriedly moved into it. Go for the food. If you want hot water to cut the fat bring your own like I do. We have been to Armandillo Willys many times and have always had a good meal. We went yesterday and we're extremely disappointed. The pulled pork was so fatty we couldn't eat it, the chicken was dry and the corn muffin (my favorite) was so stale, i needed up throwing it out. Will not be going back. read more
