On my ongoing quest to sample every restaurant in the area..my latest stop was the Armitage Ale House. Scoring a reservation here feels a bit like trying to capture a rare Pokémon: possible, but only after weeks of emotional growth and calendar stalking. Right on the corner of Armitage and Sheffield, the location is as prime as it gets. We were seated right away, which shocked me enough to momentarily question reality. Our server gave us the rundown with the confidence and grace that has become a Hogsalt signature--organized and efficient. Drinks: The cocktail list was solid, classic, and self-assured. We started with a "Penicillin" and the "100 Year Cigar" both balanced. Perfectly timed, perfectly mixed. For the main course we switched to a glass of Pinot, also a great companion. Overall I'd give the drinks a 4/5: solid though I found myself wishing for just a bit more creative chaos. Food: We opened with the steak tartare, which Fresh, tender, flavorful, easily among Chicago's best, and that's a bold statement I stand by. Next came the burger: good, though a touch on the salty side. Still hungry and knowing we'd waited weeks for this meal--we went forward with the chicken. And that, unfortunately, was the night's disappointment.. Very salty, very plain, and very... chicken. Garlic, chicken, and salt, in that order. It reminded me that just as there are very few perfect albums, there are very few perfect menus. Thankfully dessert redeemed the evening with the sticky cake, as my friend's weird friend will say; it was DELICIOSOOO! warm, with a soft texture and the praline added a nice texture. The gelato that came with it also, phenomenal. The kind of dessert that makes you forget every disappointment and briefly believe in miracles again. Overall: A very good experience--solid 4 stars. I'll definitely be back for that sticky cake, but would I wait weeks for another reservation? Probably not. Life is short, and there are other tartares to conquer. read more

Absolutely delicious! I was in Chicago briefly for an evening from Milwaukee and had heard good things. I popped in right around 5:15 and snagged a seat outside (helpful to have a party of one haha). It was such a lovely, breezy space. I had a hard time deciding and wanted everything on the menu but opted for the Malabar - a unique tequila drink. Loved the saffron. I ordered the Smoked Trout Caesar and the fries with garlic aioli! All soooo yummy! Loved the chunks of trout in the salad but thought it was slightly overdressed (personal preference). We had reservations for 4 people for brunch this morning and wanted to share our experience. What I liked; We ordered a few appetizers which were very good and the food came out nice and hot! The 2 appetizers we ordered were the naan bread and the crispy silver dollar hash browns. What I disliked; Some of the main course we ordered were the Heritage Chicken Pie ("we're known for that") and 2 Ribeye and Eggs. Unfortunately all 3 hot entrees were ice cold including the sides of the dish. We were celebrating a birthday and made the decision not to complain about our orders. I'm not happy with the cold food that was served for our entrees and certainly not happy with the $300.00 I spent. Armitage Ale House was exceptionally good. Service was super friendly. They even valeted our stuff that we were taking to the lake, which was much, much appreciated. Our server, Justine, was also very helpful and great to chat with. The 5 of us had brunch and we all enjoyed our food. I had the brunch pot pie. It was hearty and full of flavor. I was very pleased with the balance of ingredients and how soft the the pie crust. Drink selection was also plentiful. Interior is truly authentic English with dim lighting and wood throughout. With prices like that, the everything has to be top notch. And while the food was good, service was good, ambiance was cool and unique, for me it just doesn't justify the price. I started with a cocktail - the 100 year cigar - which was incredible. Super well crafted with a balance of smokiness, booziness, and a tad of a dry finish. One of the highlights of the meal for me. We then shared the naan bread and some fries. Fries were fine. Naan bread was really good but at $10 plus we got two spreads of $4 each and for $4 it's like this little tiny tray of sauce. The whipped feta was a bit sour almost too, but the naan itself was fantastic with the zaatar seasoning. For entrees we had the chicken tikka masala which was fine but have had better for like 25% less at most Indian restaurants. We also had a steak and ale pie which was good, again pricey, but at least here with the bone barrow and presentation of the pie, I can understand it. The pie was really good and I would definitely get a pie again. But my best pie shop in London cost a tenner, these pies going for ~30.... Overall it's a pricey meal but Drinks were great, vibe great, food good. read more

I've been wanting to come here for awhile but reservations have been difficult to get. We finally got one for a Saturday night. The place is narrow when you enter - packed but cozy. The decor is timeless and classy, with piano instrumentals in the background. We were seated in the larger dining room in a booth. I started with the 100-year-old cigar house cocktail and each sip was smooth, and the zacapa 23 rum had a unique flavor. To start with appetizers, we got the smoked trout caesar. I've had a smoked salmon caesar and loved it but was skeptical about trout. All my skepticisms went away when i realized how delicious the trout was - the subtleness of the smokey flavor of the smoked trout with the caesar dressing, alongside the saltiness of the chips - I couldn't get enough. For my entree, I got the fish and chips - I was not ready for how large the portion of this dish was, as the fish was huge, and it came with a decent portion of fries. The fish fry crust was to perfection - a delightful crunch, the fish was juicy and flavorful. The remoulade was a nice pairing with it. The fries were fried nicely as well. I had about half my plate worth of leftovers from how much it was. For dessert, we got the sticky date cake. I have had it at other Hogsalt restaurants, but this is the only location that serves it with a brown butter gelato. This touch alone is enough to set it apart from other locations. The cake and toffee sauce were consistent - divine as always. This truly is one of the best desserts I have had anywhere, and I highly recommend it. I appreciate that our waiter was prompt up front about allergens and was very helpful in ensuring we could get the dishes we want. Even with our large list (soy, sesame, peanuts, cashews) we still could get a lot of the food. The staff was friendly and quick too. The price for the food is in line with most other Chicago restaurants of its kind - upscale cuisine but not overly expensive. This particular location focuses on a mix of British/Indian/American food and I would say its worth it for the experience and the unique dishes it offers, as there is a little bit of everything for anyone. If you are having trouble getting reservations, it's sister restaurant Trivoli Tavern offers a lot of overlap in the menu and is another great dining experience. read more

I truly hate how much I love Armitage Alehouse. Hogsalt really knows what they're doing... It is almost impossible to get a reservation here but I was able to snag a table by going right when they open in the morning. If you come here you have to try the prime rib sandwich. It looks like an average beef rib sandwich until it hits your tongue. It is quite literally one of my favorite sandwiches ever. I also have an obsession with sticky date cakes and sticky toffee puddings since moving to Chicago and theirs really takes the W. It is huge. I also tried the ribeye and eggs. I've been dying to go to Armitage and finally managed to snag a reservation for brunch. The ambience of the place was great - very reminiscent of a British pub. What we got: 1. Tartare: this was great. Good balance of flavor. Came with big pieces of good sourdough. 2. Pie: it was alright- expected more from their pies if I'm being honest. Very heavy. The top was crisp and nice, but the bottom's become quite soggy. I've had better pies elsewhere 3. Prime rib dip: probably one of the best dip sandwiches I've had in a while. Most places have extremely salty au jus but theirs was the perfect balance. Must order! 4. Salted caramel ice cream: it was my friend's bday so they comped us this ice cream which was a wonderful gesture. This was actually great too. Not too sweet and good salt level. Overall, Armitage was great, albeit a tad pricey. Would defo come back to try their dinner menu and that famous sticky date pudding. read more

TLDR: Time travel back to London circa 1920s for an incredible culinary experience! I've walked by the Armitage Alehouse so many times and each time, I say to myself, "This place is cute, I should check it out". Well who knew it was a highly sought after establishment?! Clearly everyone else but me bc the brunch resy I made (on Resy) was for 2 weekends out and I nabbed the last time slot at 11:15. I had no expectations going in and came out a changed person. Atmosphere: Stepping in, you think, oh cute. Make yourself to the back of the restaurant and you'll feel like you've time traveled! It literally feels like some historic old white dude's office, for a lack of better words. From the mirrors to the wall papers and antique furniture, everything was so on theme. You won't find any of these on Wayfair or IKEA, that's for sure. Food: We ordered the Cheese Burger and Blood Sausage & Pork Cheek Pie. The burger was great (of course, what do you expect from a group that produced Au Cheval?) but god dammit that pie was PHENOMENAL. I could eat that all day, any day! No part of blood sausage or pork cheek is light or healthy but it is 100% good for your soul and emotional well-being. If blood sausage makes you queasy, just ignore your instincts and try it. I guarantee you won't be stopping after the first bite. My Chai tea toddy was also quite incredible, especially for a cold and drizzly Sunday morning. Also, don't snooze on the chocolate mousse with sea salt. This "underdog" of a dessert (as our server put it) is light and delicate in texture; definitely not too sweet, not too salty--but just so damn right. I can definitely see why this place books up so quickly! The service was equally top notch, and we've already decided that we'll be back for dinner to try their pot pies!!! I was deflated to see that there were no reservations any time soon during dinner hours... Although, we were told that they reserve seats for walk-ins, so we may be back sooner than we thought! The atmosphere is romantic with a speakeasy vibe, paired with truly outstanding service. We started with the Steak & Anchovy Tartare and the Smoked Trout Caesar. The tartare was excellent--easily the second-best we've had in Chicago, just behind Bavette's. And don't overlook the Caesar--it was unbelievable, thanks to the genius addition of salt & vinegar chip croutons. Though we'd heard rave reviews about the burger, we opted for the Prime Rib Sandwich instead, and it did not disappoint. It was hands down the best French dip I've ever had. I typically don't enjoy horseradish, but the creamy sauce was the perfect complement to the rich, salty au jus. We also tried the Oxtail & Red Wine Pot Pie, which lived up to every bit of the hype. The baked-in bone marrow, flavorful thin gravy, and perfectly paired mashed potatoes made it a standout dish. Even though we were completely full, our server insisted we try the Date Cake--and we're so glad we did. It was, quite possibly, the best dessert I've ever had in my life. read more

Armitage Alehouse is a beautiful, intimate, and ornate British restaurant. With a robust menu, there are a variety of options for every diner. After three visits for lunch, I've the privilege to try a full variety of dishes that I could vouch are very delicious--a testament to Armitage Alehouse to being an overall solid restaurant. There aren't any misses honestly. I especially love their steak tartare, samosas (light and extra crispy!), miso cod (delicate, fresh and silky soft), pike fish and chips, dry aged rib eye steak and sticky date cake. Brandy is the friendliest and attentive server who looks out for her guests by making sure each dish is properly prepared for the best dining experience, or she'll take it back to the kitchen for it to be remade. Brandy has consistently recommended very tasty dishes and truly cares that we get the best of our visit. I would definitely come here to celebrate any special occasion. Wow. Armitage Alehouse is amazing! Everything we ate was delicious. We tried the steak tartare, honey Brie, tandoori chicken, duck and carrot pie, and sweet potato. Everything was delicious and executed well. I also had the 100 year old cigar cocktail (wonderful). The ambience is very cool with classic British tavern charm with tons of decor to delight the eyes as you dine. The service was friendly, professional, and high quality. At times it felt a little slow but I suppose that's part of the British aesthetic. I will definitely be back! Reservations seem difficult to get but I've heard you can more easily get bar seating for a drop-in meal. read more

The service and food was just out of this world. I got a Singapore Sling, which wasn't too sweet at all, it was so good! And we split the trout Caesar salad, charred naan, chicken tikka masala, and truffle bucatini. I'm not sure I could even pick one favorite dish bc every dish was insanely good. I was most surprised by how much I loved the trout Caesar salad, it might sound odd and too fishy, but it was amazing. The naan bread was incredible too. We ordered.... - Beef Tartare - Delice (the creamy cheese) - wagyu smashburger - Chicken Tikka - Flourless molten chocolate cake We loved the apps. The salt and vinegar chips with the tartare was a great combo. The cheese so creamy and the gf bread had a nice buttery taste. However, the entrees were so average. The $30 Wagyu burger... skip. The Small Cheval Wagyu burger is $20 and a lot better. The Chicken Tikka, not bad but I've had better for a lil cheaper too. Happy last minute we decided to get dessert and end the dinner on a high note with the chocolate cake decadently paired with the vanilla whip cream. Service was kind of slow, we were there for 2.5 hours. The ambiance is very nice. Great for date night, sharing and potentially special occasion. However, for the hype around this place I was expecting more and while I'm definitely glad I tried it, I don't see myself waiting with my fingers crossed for another res off the waitlist. read more

The Sticky date cake is one of the best, most decadent desserts I have ever had. That alone made the visit 5 stars. Loved brunch at Armitage! I was obsessed with the super moody and classic vibes. The decor was amazing - so thoughtful and cozy... even outfitted with a fireplace. We went around the holidays and the entire inside was decorated for Christmas. So festive and warm! I came with a group of 5 and we had a nice booth seat, we ordered almost everything on the menu worth trying - the Belgian waffle, avocado toast, eggs Benedict, steak and eggs, pub burger, and silver dollar potato pancakes. I also loved that there were so many gluten free options on the menu as one of my friends eats only GF. Truly everything was delicious, but the pub burger and waffle were my favorites! Tried out Armitage Alehouse while visiting a friend who lives in Chicago. Def check them out if you can get a reservation early enough in advance! Inside was decorated pretty cool. It was some English pub style food with a modern twist. Our waiter was very sweet but a little too overwhelming, lol. To start, we got the charred naan with all three spreads. We particularly loved the spiced lamb! If you take a piece of naan, spread the spiced lamb on, and then add a dallop of whipped feta, you'll have the perfect bite. I got the wagyu cheeseburger after hearing amazing things. Keep in mind, it is a double patty so I was pretty full halfway through. The fries were great and so was the aioli to dip them in. My friend got the prime rib sandwich. After never having had it before, he loved it and was craving it again the next day! Everything was great and worth the visit! read more

I was pleasantly surprised to know this was Indian English fusion. The food was DELICIOUS. You HAVE to get the date cake. We got the steak pot pie, bucatini, and burger. The burger was amazing. The steak pot pie was rly good - very rich. The empress of India drink was also like juice. So good. The service was great as well! Their reservation system is a scam. You can be on line before 9am 21 days in advance for your desired date (per their rules) and within one second of the date opening up there is literally no availability from 4pm until 10pm. The restaurant is clearly holding the prime reservations back. Maybe spend less time allocating your reservations out to "influencers" and let your food stand on its own. It's complete BS. Food was a solid 4 to 4.5 stars, the stars of which are the steak pie, fish n chips, and stick toffee pudding, mango sorbet, which were PERFECTION. Very, very hard to get reservations here unless you are nocturnal/a vampire. Loved the service by Rebekah and Tess - incredible hospitality. Thank you. The steak pie was one of the best savory pies I've ever eaten in my life, is not the single best. Also the sticky toffee pudding is the best version of that ever. And the paneer mango salad has one of the most addictively light and well seasoned dressings you will find anywhere. OH MY GOD. So good. And of course they have the Au cheval burger, but just slightly better. You should definitely add the thick cut bacon to it. Chicken tikka masala and rice could have been much better with better ingredients (namely pasture raised chicken thighs and basmati rice), and naan with zataar was enjoyable but ultimately unmemorable. The tandoori chicken dish was quite mediocre unfortunately. Overall, a solid 5 star experience for dinner. Perfection! Everything was amazing from the delicious food to the decor to the awesome service.

What an incredible place. Definitely feels like an old timey British pub but with some of the best food you could imagine. We got in at 4 PM on a weekend and put our names in for a table with no reservation; we managed to get bar seating by 6 PM! The food was all delicious with my only note being that we ordered items that were skewing a bit on the salty side. I think I preferred the tartare over the smoked trout Caesar. The steak frites was fantastic; meat was so soft and well seasoned and the beef tallow fries are the perfect accompaniment. Honestly the date cake with ice cream is something you'll dream about afterwards. I will for sure be coming back here in the near future to try more of the menu! read more

Finally got to enjoy this place with my bf & friends and it lives up to the hype. The ambiance is so dark but cozy and intimate and it feels like an exclusive invitation entering the restaurant. The Pot Pies that were recommended by our server were so delicious. And I'm a seafood person so I enjoyed the Branzino as well. But their best dish was their Sticky Date Cake. Delicious brunch food is served here! I would recommend being extremely careful about being on time here; if you are even a minute late over the grace period of your reservation, your table will be given away. There is no time limit for tables here (at least on the Saturday I went), so you may wait for a while. The avocado toast is heaped with avocado to the top! The toast itself is smeared with mashed avocado, as well as topped with a generous serving of sliced avocado, which is gently seasoned with spices. I added a helping of scrambled eggs to mine, which were thick, creamy and fluffy in texture. The toast comes with four slices, so it's a shareable portion. The English breakfast is well balanced in flavor and variety! While very hearty, it did not feel heavy, perhaps due to the use of fresh and delicious ingredients. The garlic fries were fluffy and crisp, and matched with a creamy aioli to complement the crispy texture of the fry. The interior ambiance is very dark and dimly lit, much like a speakeasy.
