I've been shopping at Armstrong in Glendale for many years, but I 'discovered' their landscape designers just this Spring, when I had them design and install drought tolerant plants to replace our thirsty lawn. The results are fabulous! The designer we used, Ginny Moniz, works out of the Glendale and La Crescenta stores. She is very 'painterly', easy to work with, and knowledgeable about plants, ground covers, and, of course, design. You cannot go wrong with Armstrong Glendale! read more

We just bought a new home in Glendale, so it was out first time at this Armstrong location. At first sight, it seems like a really friendly place, but the management and team isn't "all that". The nicest person we encountered was one of the stockroom employees, who was very kind. We ended up buying a fountain from this location, and it's beautiful, don't get me wrong, but the service and the whole process of us purchasing this fountain was such a headache. The staff doesn't seem to have much knowledge, especially the management team. Now, I am a pretty picky person and have high expectations, but wouldn't you if you were buying a $900 fountain? When we inquired about the price of the fountain when we first saw it, we were shocked to find out that even though the fountain was slightly damaged, and was full of algae, we couldn't get any discount. I, of course, asked to speak to the manager, and when we did, he said the same thing to us. WTH?! How can you sell an item at its full value if it is even slightly damaged and used as a sample? Anyway, after talking to him for a while, he finally gave us 10% OFF. We agreed and paid. We were not happy about it because it wasn't in the best condition, but were desperate to purchase the fountain that day because we had a party that same weekend. My recommendation to you is, if you have the opportunity to go to another Armstrong, please do. We have been to the La Canada and Pasadena locations, and both have FANTASTIC service (for me at least). read more

Today I came in looking for plants to put into my planter. There were only two women working and when I had a question I seemed assistance. I was worried about coming in because a previous time I went to Lowe's and no one could help me with anything nor did they have the proper education on plants. But here, they were wonderful! She showed me the types soul I needed, tips to keep the plants alive, and pointed me in the right direction of good plants and herbs. Day 1: I was told by the Armstrong Gardening Experts to water my new planter once a week, and make sure it gets plenty sunlight. My little itty bitty planter..... Has no drainage in the pot. Is that legal? Well, It's like 1 plant sucked the life out of 4 smaller plants. And so, the garden expert(s) are conducting a repot. Yes, the must do a replant. It's like an overnight project. And I must purchase a moisture meter. High maintenance gardening for such a tiny centerpiece to keep my apartment. I don't know what to think..... However, I'll return to pick my pretty desert planter when they call me. Soooo much drama. I'd love a free packet of 150 Lady Bugs, however, I do not yet have a garden. It'll only be given away this weekend with purchases: 2 million. That's could be cool. I just wanna see what that many ladybugs look like together: creeping, crawling, flying and nibbling plants. Day 2: I went to Armstrong to pick up my repotted planter. The Armstrong Garden Experts initially told me that the replanting / repotting was free because it was their fault for giving me the incorrect information on lifetime plant care. However, the owner charged me $8.97 per for 3 new mini succulents. The repotting fee was waived. Also, I had to purchase this moisture meter apparatus because they make planters without proper drainage. The expert at checkout told me that a gravel drainage was built at the bottom of the pot. So my plants shouldn't have any problems now. read more

I got an Orchid as a gift from a family member. Unfortunately the plant was dying so I brought it to this Armstrong location to get advice on what to do. I did get what seems like good advice: Remove from the pot, trim the dead roots, sanitize roots with Physan, get new orchid bark and fertilizer and repot in terracota. However, getting the advice was like pulling tooth and nail. The person helping me was this elderly man with grey hair (I think his name is Don). He was clearly disinterested in helping. Not until I was persistent with my questions did I finally get thorough answers. He cut a large section of the stem without asking me first and then dissappeared and left me guessing after I purchased the stuff I needed. This is the first plant I've ever tried to revive. I came here specifically for help and advice because the plant has sentimental value to me. Getting advice shouldnt be so difficult. Not coming here again. read more

Though they are a chain, they are very locally focused. They are also incredibly helpful with standard information, selection, and design, and don't have the egotistical attitude of a lot of the small nurseries with private owners. Biggest bonus, if your plant (tree, shrub, flower, whatever it is) doesn't make it, they will take it back and replace!! read more

The customer service is absolutely horrible. I have been calling for two days now to ask a simple question. Yesterday around 3 pm the phone just kept ringing and ringing. Today I called and patiently waited until someone answered the phone and then was hung up on. I have tried calling back 3 times and each time i have been hung up on. I understand they are busy but to be hung up on repeatably is unacceptable service. read more

I stayed away from this nursery for sometime because of the bad customer service I experienced there on my last visit but I decided to give it a try once again since they do have a larger selection of outdoor plants than Home Depot. To my surprise, they have newer staff now and they are friendly and helpful. Eric is very helpful and will help you find a plant among their stock. If not, he is accommodating in ordering it for you. They seem to have even more varieties of flowering plants and roses than before. I think I will frequent this nursery again given the improved customer service. read more

This is our favorite local garden center because their plants are top-quality and pesticide-free. The staff is very accommodating and will special-order items for us. I'm deducting one star because they give out plastic for people to put in cars which contributes to the plastics pollution problem. We would also like to a way to return gallon-can containers, etc., since we are unsure they recycle. The more we can do to reuse plastics, or not use them in the first place, the better care we're taking of the environment. read more

Still shopping at Armstrong and still a loyalty card member so they must be doing something right. The sales are great, and sometimes the staff throws a garden party where you can enjoy a grilled hot dog while you decide what plants to buy. I belong to a community garden and frequently recommend Armstrong to my fellow gardeners when they have sales and questions about specific plants. Home Depot may be cheaper, but the staff can be hard to find and not everyone is knowledgeable. I've always found the staff at Armstrong friendly and ready to help. read more

The first time around we just talked basics with Laticia and she instructed us to bring pictures of the yard as well as dimensions. A few weeks ago i dropped by to buy a new rose plant for our garden. Yes, i have a green thumb. We walked around for 15 minutes checking out the selection and not once did anyone ask to see if we needed help or if we had any questions. The main reason we came by was due to their large selection of plants, perennials, orchids and plant food. After picking out our rose shrub we headed inside to buy an orchid as a birthday gift for my grandmother. Again, there were 2 employees near us and neither of them bothered to acknowledge us. We finally went up to the counter, paid, and got the hell out. I'd rather take my business to a different nursery with better service. read more

Customer service is horrible. I used to live in Burbank and go there very often. I was in the neighborhood and wanted to buy some plants. We picked up some plants and after I paid for I noticed that I was overcharged. The lady who was ringing us up charged one plant twice. I didn't take it seriously and people do make mistakes. When I pointed the receipt to her she looked very annoyed and not a single time she apologized, instead she asked another guy that she overcharged us. She apologized to him for her mistake but not to her customers. She then left and the other guy was refunding our money. Surprisingly I noticed he also didn't apologize for the mistake. Their attitude was like it was our fault. I have been in customer service industry for long time and this is not acceptable service to me. All they needed to say that " I am sorry". I will never go back to that location again. read more

There comes a time in a man's life when he starts to care about flowers, plants, and other greenery. That time comes when he owns a house and needs it to look nice. (With increasing pressure from his beautiful bride) Enter Armstrong Garden Centers. Armstrong is certainly one of the better chains that sells all your gardening needs. This location in Glendale is the nearest location to my home and I've come here enough times that the staff and I recognize each other though not enough to admit it to each other. I've bought a lot of plant life here and am happy to report that with the guidance of the staff, everything around my property is alive and quite a bit of it is thriving! These people know their plants and talked us into and out of different plant life and we're thankful for it! We get all sorts of compliments from others about them as well. They also sell a really great plant food. Can't remember the name but it takes them 15 seconds to recommend it. They also have an indoor plant selection and fruit trees galore! Bought two apple trees that looked like sticks when I planted them and several weeks later have all sorts of leaves budding. Home Depot has a great selection and can sometimes be cheaper, but their garden folk don't know plants as well as Armstrong. I've had a few failed attemps with Home Depot which hurt my gardening pride, however, Armstrong has made it all better! read more

The only redeeming thing about this place is that they have Xmas trees, which makes it smell wonderful. I made my way over there recently to find some plants for a terrarium that I'm building (in an old apothecary candy jar I had just purchased from downtown). Prior to going, I looked up some information regarding what kinds of plants I should use, especially considering that it would be in a closed jar. I had a list of plants that I was looking for, but I had no idea that they would be so difficult to find!! When I got to Armstrong, I wandered around their various flowers and plants, all of which looked very healthy, but I couldn't find any of the plants I was interested in purchasing. Since I thought it was probably normal bc nurseries are always limited to what they get from the gardeners, I deciced to ask one of the employees for some help. When I asked about building my terrariums, the guy said to use succulents. However, I responded by saying I didn't want succulents because the various articles I read said that they would only survive for about a month, especially inside an enclosed container. I asked him if there were more "normal plant-like" options, to which he scoffed and told me that they wouldn't last very long because "plants need oxygen to live." While yes, that may be true, I'm seeing closed terrariums everywhere on blogs that state they seem to be doing fine... so no need to be snippy. To make matters worse, he gave me this ridiculously condescending look and added, "but if you really want, you can go inside to where the houseplants are." I'm sorry, but what's with the attitude? Take a look at the Better Homes and Garden article that lists the top plants for terrariums: none of them are succulents. I don't mind that this man may not have been educated on these or aware of this information, but there's definitely a better way of providing good customer service. Gone is the personable customer service that I so enjoyed and appreciated. A new manager has taken over whom is at times fairly arrogant, discourteous, and clearly didn't care via his delivery with a customer as to how business is clearly conducted there now. I was so disgusted by his attitude and delivery that I've taken my business elsewhere (to the Armstrong on magnolia in Sherman Oaks where they are nice and will go out of their way to help you). On average over the last four or so years I've gone to the Armstrong in Glendale on San Fernando Road every other weekend to purchase soil and plants. With each visit I typically spent about $120.00 to $160.00 a visit. My back yard is like the Secret Garden/an Urban Farm, and as such am in need of supplies via Armstrong as they always have the best stock and quality of plants, soils and service! I just looked at my card statements as I wrote up this review and from January 2018 to this May I've spent $1,082.55 at that the Glendale Armstrong. My girlfriend also goes there who spends about the same, together we are (were) loyal patrons... This last week (May 29th) I went in search of more lettuce to replace some that had bolted... Upon my visit I found that my (lol) Armstrong was out, and their shelves were clear of any lettuce packs. I did see two trays stacked on top of each other off to the side. They were six packs that had suffered from lack of water and or care and were clearly going to be thrown out as they were unsellable. I approached a staff member and asked you have no more lettuce, will you be getting any more in? I was told that as it's becoming hotter they'll not be getting any more in. With that I asked what was to become of the trays that they had off to the side on the dolly - are you going to throw those out, and if you are may I have this one six pack of romain as I think I can bring it back to life" (at this point I was willing to try and knew that I could probably Frankenstein the wilted and seemingly lifeless fellows lol). The clerk said she'd ask her manager... The new manager (I think he's been there now for a few months) looked at the trays of unsellable goods and said to the clerk "Yes we should probably throw those away as we can't sell them like that". I then repeated my question directly to the manager "If you're going to throw them out might may I please have that one six pack of lettuce"? Ibegan to explain that I come here allot, I'd like to replant some lettuce today and you don't have any on your shelves...I'm going to get some other things and I'd really appreciate it..." The manager replied "I'll give it to you at half price", my reply then "but you just said you're going to throw them out, I just want the one (1) pack" (at this point it was the principal, with the discount that 6 pack would only be $1.50 or so yet I thought here I am a good customer who frequents this location, you're going to throw it out which you've just said in front of me... Why not simply offer the six pack to me as I was going to make other purchases that morning... Clearly this new/newer Manager has little or possibly no good customer service sense as he replied "NO, we don't ever give away plants to customers!". And with that I was frustrated that I left and drove to Armstrong in Sherman Oaks where I dropped $141.32 Cooperate might want to speak with this gentleman about his lack of courtesy. I certainly miss the days of Taylor and company who worked at the Glendale Armstrong as they were always so nice and had the best service to everyone and anyone. You could count on how the staff were always helpful and happy about helping you, which is of corse why I so enjoyed going there, yet with the new manager's sour attitude I think it'll be a a while before I return, if I do at all (lol). read more

Armstrong is a mixed bag and seems so close to greatness yet falls short with overpriced plants, especially when there's a Home Depot 5 minutes down the road with fruit trees that are 1/2 to 1/3th the price. Come on, a five gallon fruit tree that can't be much older than 2 years shouldn't cost over $50. At Home Depot, you can get the same trees for $24. Many of Armstrong's trees are from Dave Wilson Nursery or Durlings. Dave Wilson makes some incredible patented trees with low chill hours. Yet, this Armstrong is stocking varieties that need 500+ chill hours. Glendale gets, at most, 300 chill hours. So they're selling fruit trees that'll never produce. Boggles the mind when Dave Wilson carries dozens of apples, peaches, plums, etc. that work in our zone. Additionally, at $35 for a lamb hass avocado grown by Durlings, they're $10 more than Home Depot and $5 more than other local garden centers...and that's for the smallest avocado I've ever seen, had to be about 2 feet tall. I picked up one at Sunset Nursery that was a good six feet not including the pot for $30, also from Durlings. Why the tiny trees? I understand you get what the growers provide, but price accordingly -- a 2ft tree shouldn't be more expensive than a 6 footer. That said, they display their trees beautifully with nice little tags, much better than the free-for-all that is Home Depot's tree corner. They do have one surprisingly good bargain -- perlite. $20 for a 3 cubic foot bag. It's $15 for a 2cuft bag at Home Depot. Same brand and everything, go figure. Decent seed selection but nothing compared to other nurseries. The employees are knowledgeable and friendly and their other plants -- veggies, succulents, etc. -- look really great. They water and fertilize the plants so you're definitely getting top notch stuff, which isn't always guaranteed at the depot. Armstrong, get reasonable with your prices and you'll have yourself a convert. Otherwise, I can't think of why I'd make Armstrong my first choice when there's better/cheaper options elsewhere. read more

Wow, talk about bad customer service. Not only do you have to hunt down an employee to get help but you should also be ready to get no help. I've only been gardening for a year so I'd expect someone working at a garden center to know more than I do. So if I'm asking for pulverized dolomite, don't refer me to hydrated lime. And if I need 7-7-7 granular fertilizer, don't refer me to a 13-13-13 liquid fertilizer. Which did happen to me. The suggestions weren't even comparable to what I needed for my specific gardening setup. They had a nice selection of starter plants so maybe that's all they're good for. But I'll stick to buying supplies elsewhere. You know, the supplies that'll help those plants stay alive. read more

Tried twice to make Armstrong our garden shop. We recently moved to the area and have a lot of purchases for the yard to make. The first time, no one approached or acknowledged us. Wanting to give them a second chance, we went back and someone attempted to help us and said he'd "be right back". We stood in the same spot as he took out the trash and moved inventory around and around. No one else came to help. Expensive plants but sometimes they have amazing plants on sale. The staff is eager to help you and are very knowledgeable about their items. The plant product and accessories are way cheaper online however. This place is not at all good for succulents and cacti. read more

We've been coming to this place for many years. Within the past 5 years or so each time we come I leave my head scratching it saying "why do I keep coming back?"
