In my continuing efforts to get a hot dog in each county in Virginia, I pulled into Armstrong's for dinner on a Thursday in Augusta County, Virginia. The parking lot is sizeable and there is a rear entrance to the restaurant from the parking area in the back. I walked around and entered through the front and found a very busy restaurant. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to wait to be seated but after a minute of standing awkwardly at the door I took a seat at one of the little half booths that they have available. The restaurant is a good size with a bar and a private room on the side. It took quite a while for one of the two servers working to get to me. Best I can tell is that one of the servers was relatively new so there was lots of instruction going on in addition to serving a restaurant full of people. It was spaghetti night and Armstrong's spaghetti is, apparently, popular! I ordered a hot dog with chili, slaw and mustard. Server came back a few minutes later and said they were out of chili. And did I just want onions and mustard.... So, I corrected her to slaw and mustard and out the hot dog came. Just a hot dog on a plate. The menu said that the hot dog came with chips. I reminded my server of that. She took the plate back and returned with a hot dog and what looked like the crumbs from the bottom of a wavy Lays bag. I had asked for ranch to dip the chips in but very few of these were dippable. The hot dog wasn't great. The slaw here was SUPER sweet and without the chili flavor to balance it, it was overwhelmingly sweet. Overall, just not a great experience. Old school greasy spoon. The food is acceptable, but stay within their core competence. Solid meatloaf, burgers, and country fried steak. It is not, however, a seafood restaurant so bear that in mind. Nice staff, they have a room for events or meetings, and plenty of parking. read more

Avoid at all costs before 2pm when the small female cook comes in. The morning cook is vile towards the staff and customers. Heard him saying normal people eat breakfast before 11am and they need to wake up earlier he isn't going to cook them breakfast that late. Even though the menu states it's available all day. Watched him stand at the griddle with his hand down the back of his pants and continued to cook food without washing his hands. Very nice breakfast at Armstrong's. They were extremely busy, but we found a table and waited. The waitress was very friendly, professional and attentive. It was a good country breakfast. The sausage was particularly good. We thought it might be locally made. Coffee was a little warm, but some like it that way. I prefer hot coffee. Eggs were a little soft for me. Otherwise, good meal. One thing we thought was odd, we did not get the total bill until we left the table, which meant we couldn't determine tip at table. The bill did not have cost of everything on we had. Like C meant coffee. And T meant tea. We didn't know that and didn't remember cost. Also, no one mentioned it's a cash only business. We found out while sitting at the table and looking at "Yelp". The absolute worst food ever. Salads were brown lettuce and waitress did not care. Spaghetti was disgusting. No meat in a meat sauce and absolutely no flavor. We will NEVER return. Service was horrible too with waitress threatening to walk out. Again did I say disgusting? read more

The queen of country dining. Service is unbelievably quick and helpful. Staff was willing to joke around. Best coleslaw I've ever had. Old Timey country breakfast for example, chip beef gravy! The waitresses are all very nice and hard working. That's one of the reasons we liked to come here. We used to come here regularly. Something happened. The last time we were here the food was bad ... like 'tastefully' noticeable and 'digestively' (if you know what I mean) verifiable. Today we watched people come (eat) and go that arrived after we arrived. When we finally got our burgers with bacon, every seemed to be pulled from a refrigerator or left near an open window. While the burger was hot. everything else was very cold. Not like left outside, but literally as though the bacon, lettuce and tomato was pulled from a refrigerator. The men's restrooms was very clean. Today's visit for a late afternoon meal didn't go well. We sat at an empty both and no staff ever came up to us to even offer water. Ok, business appeared brisk, but at least two tables of folks who arrived 10-15 minutes after we seated ourselves were waited on before us. After waiting 20 minutes without even eye contact from the wait staff, we left. The same thing happened on the visit previous visit, although during that visit, we were eventually served. Solid spot for basic southern diner favorites. Low prices with fair but not overwhelming portions. All desserts are homemade. Service is friendly. Food comes fast. Decor is sparse. My grilled ham and cheese was as I expected and that's good. Side of fries was a small up charge but brought a big heap of crinkle cuts done just right. Confetti cake for dessert was homemade--a little dry but decent. If you want frills and fancy, this is not for you. If you want fast, good and basic, this place nails it. I was passing through overnight and found this cute place on my way back to the highway. I had two eggs over medium with rye toast. There are no gluten free options here. I had a side of cole slaw which was finely chopped not shredded and slightly sweet and refreshing. Then i ordered a side of grits and they were made fresh for me. These folks are friendly, fast and courteous. Prices are very reasonable. Lots of tables and booths, gives it that country feeling. read more

My experience @ Armstrong was horrible. My girlfriend and I went while on a weekend getaway in Staunton. As soon as we walked in ALL EYES WERE ON US. We were out of place 2 black people in an all white restaurant. But why eat meals at Applebee's or Red Lobster that can be done locally. Right? We stood at the door for 5 minutes before my girlfriend asked do we seat ourselves. The waitress said, yes if it's a clean table as she took 2 plates from a table with 15 more on it and never came back. Another waitress comes up and says there is more seating around the corner. We finally seated ourselves but no service. Not even an acknowledgment that they'll be right with us. So the first waitress worked the entire room, didn't give us menus or take our drinks order. We were sent here by Travelers Inn for dinner. Nice old joint kind of stopped in the 60s. Very friendly staff (to us) but seemed to bicker amongst themselves. Had tasty food (chicken fried steak) and the beer was cold. Very reasonable prices. Would stop by again. read more

I've been a customer for 35+ years. There has been a steady decline in food quality in the last few years, or since the new owners took over. We went for meatloaf night Tuesday, always one of our favorites. The macaroni salad smelled like fish for some reason but that wasn't the worst. My companion's meatloaf had several small hairs that looked every bit like mouse hairs and, upon further examination, she found a longer, curly hair (I don't even want to guess). We both ordered waters and the server brought us sweet teas (which we had taken off the check). She also interrogated us wanting to see the hairs (which I had stupidly removed and put into a napkin) and didn't think to take a pic. We obviously didn't take another bite of that dinner and, sadly, will not be back until and unless we hear they have cleaned up their act. It's CASH ONLY (and there's no signs anywhere that I saw, so I took one star away for that... Just the hassle of going to the ATM at the bank next door, etc). The food is good. I had the cheesesteak sub and the meat and veggies were cut up real small, so that was nice (I hate bug chunks of peppers or meat in my steak sub). The bread was amazing, soft on the inside, crispy on the outside... Service was friendly and prompt. Their chilli, for my tastes, was a little bland (had the chilli cheese fries). But "chilli taste" is so regional, I don't know how much I'd trust that from an outsider (I don't live in the area, was traveling for work). The place was packed even during non-prime eating hours, so that's a good sign. Just good home cooking in a friendly place. If they took card, I'd probably go back to try other dishes. read more

I'm writing this review to strongly endorse this restaurant because it's an experience. It's a local establishment and absolutely has the feel of being one with the community. I think the pricing is very fair, the service has been good for us and I love the selection. I've had hamburgers, ribs, sliced beef, fried chicken and usually enjoy the specials. Love having the TV when I dine alone. A friend has strongly recommended the club sandwich stating it's probably more than I'll want to eat. read more

We have been wanting to try something new that we've never had before, so we decided on picking up Armstrong's for dinner. Based upon reading previous reviews, it appeared that we were in for some good food at low prices, however, that weren't the case. Most, if not all, foods were instant and/or store bought. The food was subpar at best, with the pork chops being extremely chewy due to excessive fat, with little meat. I ended up getting sick a few hours after eating. Cash/check only establishment, so we had to get cash at the ATM across the street. I wish I could say that we enjoyed our dinner, but it was the complete opposite for us. I wish this local family restaurant the best of luck in their future, but I don't think we will be coming back. read more

I wanted to leave a negative stars but the app will not allow that. Placed order for pick up was told it would be ready in 30-45 minutes and they would bring the food out to my car. Waited 45 minutes they still didn't bring out our order my husband went in and was told it was going to be another 20 minutes. They brought our order out and said everything was in the bags. Took the food home and not only were we missing a sandwich and fries they made my sandwich wrong. I called back and was told to come back and they would refund the food and make the food. It has now been an hour and a half and I still have not ate my dinner. When I arrived back at the restaurant I asked for a full refund since I had to drive back to Verona from Staunton and I was told that they couldn't do that and also that she didn't think that I even ordered the food was I was missing that she had to go and look up the ticket, I explained that I had a receipt showing where I paid for the food but she had to have the order. So I had to wait for until she found the ticket finally she found the ticket I was handed the missing food and they were not going to refund for the missing food until I asked. By this time I am very agitated and asked who could give me a full refund and was told the owner would have to do that and he would be there in about an hour asked to have the owner call me and I am still waiting. I have never had such poor service and I have been going there for years!! read more

We were traveling and stopped at Armstrong's for what we thought would be an enjoyable home-cooked kind of meal not of the chain restaurant type. We were sadly disappointed. We arrived at 6 pm and sat down immediately. We had to get a menu from a nearby table because no one brought us one. We placed a simple order- 2 soft drinks, an open faced hot turkey sandwich and an open-faced roast beef sandwich both with mashed potatoes. After we had to ask twice about the status of our meal after 40 minutes the waitress reported that they were out of roast beef. I said we'd have 2 hot turkey sandwiches, then she told us they were also out of turkey gravy so we accepted the offer of brown gravy. Another 30 minutes passed then she brought our plates minus flatware and the gravy in a bowl with no spoon. Also we asked her to bring our dessert in a to-go box and the check. She brought our flatware. The deli-sliced turkey was burned on the grill and was served over 3 slices of white bread. The mashed potatoes would have been good if they were hot. Turns out we didn't need a spoon for the gravy as it was so thick you could serve it with a fork. We had to ask again for the dessert Maybe we hit it at a bad time, I don't know for sure, but we will not be stopping there on our way back through the Staunton area. Wasn't expecting much from this place but was hoping for some decent country cooking. In a word, no. Everything we had was frozen factory produced or canned. :-( Wife had the fried chicken and it was a thick breaded mess and not even sure how they did it but it was sweet, just weird. My catfish was the prebreaded frozen stuff too, mashed potatoes were instant with a squirt of liquid margarine on top and peas were canned mushy crap (and again, sweet somehow).
