We were traveling and stopped at Armstrong's for what we thought would be an enjoyable home-cooked kind of meal not of the chain restaurant type. We were sadly disappointed. We arrived at 6 pm and sat down immediately. We had to get a menu from a nearby table because no one brought us one. We placed a simple order- 2 soft drinks, an open faced hot turkey sandwich and an open-faced roast beef sandwich both with mashed potatoes. After we had to ask twice about the status of our meal after 40 minutes the waitress reported that they were out of roast beef. I said we'd have 2 hot turkey sandwiches, then she told us they were also out of turkey gravy so we accepted the offer of brown gravy. Another 30 minutes passed then she brought our plates minus flatware and the gravy in a bowl with no spoon. Also we asked her to bring our dessert in a to-go box and the check. She brought our flatware. The deli-sliced turkey was burned on the grill and was served over 3 slices of white bread. The mashed potatoes would have been good if they were hot. Turns out we didn't need a spoon for the gravy as it was so thick you could serve it with a fork. We had to ask again for the dessert Maybe we hit it at a bad time, I don't know for sure, but we will not be stopping there on our way back through the Staunton area. Solid place. Where locals go. Just a place on the side of the road. Nothing fancy outside or inside. Clean. Decent food, fairly-lower priced. People kept coming in 7 to 8 at night. Most tables full when we got there around 7pm and stayed pretty fill. Attentive server-just right. Seats about 80 at counter, booths and tables. Coke fountain products. Homemade pies and cakes. Good place for kids. If you need a bite to eat, okay place to stop if you're in area. read more

A friend and I were traveling, hungry and looking for a non-franchise restaurants the locals frequent. We found it here. Very ordinary looking, but such a treat!! Cheap, good, filling food. And by cheap, I mean CHEAP. The two of us had full meals - she had the special of the day - pork loin and me a seafood platter and both of us splurged on yummy pie and came in just at $20. If this wasn't 2 hours from home, I'd be there a lot more often. read more

I will start this off by saying, this place is CASH ONLY!!! That's right people in this digital age this place is one of the few places that still hasn't caught up with those new fangled plastic money cards. They only except paper and dabloons here mate. Next is the food, thought it is alright it is nothing special. It is my honest opinion that this place has gone down hill a lot since Jack Armstrong passed away. From the food to the decore it has changed a lot over the years and not for the better. This place is a ghost of it's old self, what was once one of the be places in Verona is now just another second rate restaurant. From the jukebox to the pool table, heck even to the quality of the food, it seems like the current owner is systematically removing Jack from Armstrongs... I actually wouldn't be surprised if the final touch was to remove his name from the building itself. when you wanted a cheeseburger and fries armstrongs had the best hand patted, thick, juicy cheeseburger and good amount of fries. Went to armstrongs and when they brought me my food, the cheeseburger was a third the size, fries were cheaper kind and only half of what use to get. I don't know what happened but i would rather pay a little extra to get a good meal. right now i feel cheated. read more

Great place to stop if traveling. Clean. Friendly staff. Food is not high-end but is home-cooked. Specials are a great buy. Husband enjoyed the chili with grilled cheese. I had a tomato stuffed with chicken salad on a bed of lettuce. We both had coffee which was hot and tasted good. Much more relaxing than a chain or fast food restaurant. Prices are extremely reasonable. Wait staff hustled and was very attentive (Thank you Clarissa!) to all of the diners. Didn't mind paying cash if it helps keep their prices low. read more

Service was great. Bathroom was clean, but in disrepair, like the rest of the appearance. The kids liked the grilled cheeses. Everything was noticably out of the freezer- nothing fresh. The quality of food and service has declined greatly over the past year or so. Was in there last week and the kitchen exhaust fans were not working and it was so smoky and smelly from the grill that you could not breathe. Don't confuse HOMESTYLE food with HOMEMADE food. Because there is hardly anything that is actually MADE at this restaurant. Every item we ate was either instant, frozen or out of a can. How am I sure, because the waitress even said so, when I asked what was fresh. Save yourself the trouble and stock up on Hungry Man dinners and spare yourself the poor service with the mediocre food. This is a reheat station. You would do better ordering from Schwans. Maybe breakfast is better, but lunch/dinner choices were bad. And at $36 for 3 entrees and 3 drinks, not exactly a bargain for lunch. I talked to another local after this and they said that this place USED to be good, and people still go just out of habit and familiarity. They certainly don't care about making new loyal customers. There are many, many better choices, nearby. --- So, we are new to Staunton area, saw this was a local favorite, thought we would give it a try. First thing I notice is signs on the door, hiring cooks and waitresses. This should have been a warning. We came in to no greeting, finding ourselves a table, waitresses standing around and staring. Finally, one came over, asking if we knew what we wanted prior to even giving us menus. Decor is NASCAR with Dollar Store balloon weights on the table as centerpieces. Trying to order, I asked menu questions, thinking I would like the fried catfish tenders. Are they made fresh, I asked. No, frozen is the answer. How about the plain fried fish? Frozen. Our impatient waitress then said pretty much everything is frozen, they don't make anything here. I go ahead and order catfish, with coleslaw and mashed potatoes. Spouse orders open faced roast beef sandwich, and son orders crab cake sandwich. Tea, Lemonade, Coke. The waitress goes to gab and laugh and joke with the cook about me asking menu questions. The drinks come pretty fast and food very fast. However, the catfish tenders are actually nuggets and one of them is hard as a rock. They have no taste at all. The potatoes are instant, taste awful with instant gravy on top, clear chemical taste. My husband's beef is difficult to cut or slice and he ends up eating about half of it, leaving half on the plate. My coleslaw is out of a can, not even fresh or store bought, sort of gray wilted with bits of carrot. The nuggets have no taste at all. My son's crab cake sandwich was okay, not very thick at all but on a fresh bun with lettuce and red tomatoes. The waitress offered no refills and we had to ask for them. She didn't offer dessert but we decided to try the pies, thinking at least they would be homemade. The waitress goes to get our pie, but then gets interrupted by a personal call she has to take, and makes faces and whispers with another waitress as she talks on the phone...while we wait. Finally, we get the pie. The Boston creme looked very processed and mechanically made. The peanut butter pie was pretty good, nice crust. I ask about the pies in the case, if they are made on site or from a local bakery. She says they have them shipped in, so...they're frozen too. I go to use the restroom and the ladies room has bits of blood and feces on the wall as you are sitting on the toilet and no toilet paper. I go to pay, which by the way they ONLY take cash, but the waitresses are talking about something and finish their conversation, 4 feet from me, before turning toward the cash register to take my payment. No greeting, just a "separate checks or all together?" question. No thanks, no goodbye. As we left she did say goodbye as we walked by. read more

It was a rainy morning and my friend and I decided against continuing our motorcycle trip on this day. However, a local told us it might be worth a wet bike ride to have breakfast at Armstrongs, where all the locals hang out. We are so glad we did. Staff was friendly and efficient and food was fabulous, so much so that we went there again the next morning. Food preparation was perfect and priced very reasonable. A really good find. read more

Our breakfast was disgusting! We ordered sausage gravy which was delivered to the table cold. It tasted as if it came from a can. Fried eggs were overcooked and greasy, the waffle was undercooked, was mushy and inedible. The tenderloin and gravy was not homemade and it was also served cold. Steer clear of this place... Cheap, I got a simple club sandwich. My mom got the liver and she said it was really good. I don't recall seeing a sign saying they don't take debit or credit. Thankfully I had cash on me. Went here because all our neighbors told us we had to try it. First time we did not have cash but the waitress was so kind! I offered to stay as collateral while my husband went to get cash but she said no she trusted us to come back and pay. From the on we became a part of the Armstrongs family. All the waitresses know our names and even when I bring my mom here from out of town they remember her! The food is not healthy by any means and is your basic American dinner flare food. The chicken club (with fried chicken of course) is excellent. They often have dinner special for example spaghetti with salad and bread or roast beef, mashed potatoes, and green beans (covered in sugar) and bread for super cheap. We usually go after church for breakfast. Breakfast is your usual large portions, lots of combinations, and anything you could want for cheap. The food is good but we go here for the staff and the atmosphere. If you're looking for fancy or innovative looks elsewhere. This is a local place. read more

My third time in my life I have dined here. Living just minutes away I like it but today 2/20/2020 will be the last time. We set down at a table close to the bar at 11:58 am and 12 min or so passed before we were acknowledged. They were short on help so I thought no big deal. Finally was asked what we would like to drink and then some more time passed before the drinks arrived we were ask what we liked to order for food. A total of 48 min went by before are food was served while I set and watched 4 parties be seated and were waited on and served .....finished and stood in line ( cash/check only).. to pay for there meal. I ordered the special on the board behind the bar -Country fried steak and mashed potatoes and my wife ordered a tenderloin sandwich from the menu. No organization. Different waitresses answering the phone and handling money meanwhile handling food. UGH ! One waitress was telling the cook about her anxiety disorder and her Xanax medication . Got there for lunch on 7.12.12 at about 12:15 and place was packed! A man just finishing got up and let us have his table. "Testimony to nice people there". Our party of three sat down and ordered three lunch entres and a side order with drinks. Waitress was "BUSY" but very nice and great sense of humor. Took order and we had food within 10 minutes. Food was fresh, hot and a lot of food. If you are hungry and in Verona, this is the place to be. Food bill rang in right at $24.00 for our food. Not bad at all.
