R U D E OWNER We are from walnut creek, and came to San Rafael to run a car errand. My two sons both have food allergies and had bought them a lunch I knew was food-safe. My friend and I bought the Aroma Melt sandwich and the Falafel. While we were waiting for our food, the owner walked by our table and stared at us. After another minute of staring at us, he came over to our table and said " we sell food here. I don't want to see other food here. I responded by saying that my two sons have food allergies and we bought them food that was safe. I also explained that we bought food there and were waiting for it. He scowled and walked away. In the context of "hard times", why would you treat paying, legitimate customers like this? I will chose to never come back there because i will not spend my money to eat out at an establishment without sensitivity or customer service-- or even the decency to pretend it. This is my favorite lunch place on 4th Street. Good menu selection, helpful staff and nice ambience. I can get lunch and linger in a convivial atmosphere. Don't have the noise issues I find in other places nearby. And, the prices are very reasonable. Aroma Cafe gets my vote! read more

Though a bit on the pricy side, the Aroma has some of the best breakfast bagels I have ever experienced. In the mornings I sometimes head in for an egg, ham and cheese bagel with fresh veggie juice made to order. In the afternoons I tend towards their salads which are always fresh and delicious. The only thing keeping this place from being a 5 is that you have to pay for the wifi. Other than that, this is a fantastic cafe. read more

i've been here twice and enjoyed it both times. The first time I just had coffee. Very good, a little expensive, but it's nice to actually get coffee in a ceramic cup. My guess is they hike up the prices to offset the people who nurse one cup for hours while they surf the web. Second time, I had the caprese. Oddly, they got my order wrong (I wanted the sandwich but got the salad). However, I think I liked what I got better than what I'd ordered. It was a delicious salad and a generous portion for the price. The service was friendly. I really appreciated that ice tea refills were less than $1. That was nice. Been coming to Aroma Cafe in San Rafael for years with friends. Personally I don't care for the majority of the food they serve, and I'm addicted to Starbucks latte's so I'm biased about those being better, however the atmosphere as a warm, cozy place to meet friends and hang out is the best you get in San Rafael. I especially enjoy it when four or more of us get together and hang out on the couches in the back of the building to play scrabble for hours at a time. read more

This place is great for a date, to hang out with a group of friends, or to find some alone time. It's located in a nice part of San Rafael, and parking was pretty easy to find. It's really big for a cafe, but has this nice, homely and comfy feeling to it. It's not too loud, so one can relax and enjoy themselves here. The prices for coffee and tea were reasonable and cheaper than most cafes. I didn't eat here, so I can't say much about the food. My friend, however had a wrap and said it was delish so I have an excuse to return here some day. read more

Terrific place to get together with a friend to read and edit our writing. They don't charge for Wifi, contrary to one review. Very friendly and generous, long with lots of space in back, never any pressure to leave, whether we buy just tea and a snack or a full meal. I like the garbanzo stew, and they're willing to serve it with rice rather than couscous, which I'm allergic to. Yes it's true, they charge .50 for credit cards under $10 but that's hardly insurmountable. read more

As a vegan, I appreciate their offering a tofu wrap, but unfortunately, it was terrible. It had slabs of uncooked tofu, a tiny bit of red pepper and pickle, and too much lettuce. Tofu has to be marinated and grilled or sauteed in order to have a taste worth selling to the public. read more

This place is allright. If they'd get an ATM ready register I'd like it 100x more, but we cant be perfect. The coffee is super grub, and their iced tea's clutch. It's a nice place to just kick back, read a book, or doodle if you have an hour or so to kill. Worth a check out. read more

The baristas are good peeps. $4 for wifi is a crime. They're open later than the other cafes in SR. Food and drinks are reasonably priced and service is generally pretty quick. Sometimes the art they hang is decent. Often crowded on weekend nights. If I was the owner I'd try to figure out how to get cooler customers in here and boot out some of the folks who camp here for hours on a single coffee purchase. read more

I love this place! Down to earth cafe that reminds me of my days living in the city. You can get delicious homemade soup or one of their mediterranean specialties and just hang out. They have free wifi and plenty of room. If I want to get some work done and don't want to be home, I come here. Just don't forget to bring cash! read more

I was on a hunt for a great chai and scoured Yelp for recommendations. Based on reviews the chai here sounded promising but I was sorely disappointed. Ordered the spicy chai, but it tasted a little sour??? And made me wonder if it had gone bad. It wasn't spicy at all and was more watery than anything else. What a nice, spacious cafe. We went for breakfast. The lox bagel was really good. My friend had a ham and cheese croissant, delicious. They even have gluten-free bread. The coffee was very tasty. Very good feel here. I had the Turkish coffee. I had never had Turkish coffee before, but this stuff was POWERFUL. It felt so authentic too, like I was actually drinking coffee IN Turkey. Well, maybe not THAT authentic, but it was still pretty good and definetely gave a kick. I've been coming here to study a few times, and it's definitely a fine place to do some reading. Only downside maybe is that there aren't nearly enough outlets for laptops as some other cafes, so don't expect to be hooked up to the internets just as soon as you walk through the door. 7 out of 9! read more
