Bought a new furnace from them at the end of last winter asked them to service it for this new season and every time we made an appointment there was an excuse such as it was too cold to service my furnace. Ok made a new appointment at 9 and the day of Sal texted at 945 said they were running late and can't come till 1 also they aren't too worried about it bc they only do checks each season well this is a new season and on top of it when putting in a new furnace they cut though my dry wall. Ed is amazing - extremely knowledgeable, helpful and all around good guy. In the winter, we had some issues with our furnace. He couldn't come out in that moment but he took the time to walk me through how to get the system to give us some heat for the night until he could get to us. Turned out we needed a new furnace. He was able to replace it pretty quickly. Our new furnace has been working beautifully. Most recently our AC was on the fritz. I called Ed late in the evening. He was able to fit me in and came the next morning. He diagnosed and cleaned it etc. Luckily we didn't have a major issue with the AC. Around The Town is a great family owned company. They don't have the fancy call centers or other tech customer service stuff. But you don't need that. You just need a HVAC person that cares about their job and customers, has been in the business for awhile, and knows everything there is to know about HVAC repair and maintenance. Have worked with Ed in the past and had great experiences. This summer he sent his team led by Salvatore to fix my AC unit. Salvatore put in a new compressor but said that he couldn't get it to work. He told me I needed a whole new unit and that it could be done by end of week. I sought a second opinion. The second repair man was able to get the compressor to start by showing me that Salvatore and his team had not connected the wires but taped over them to look connected. I paid for their service and moved in with my working AC. Unfortunately, this week, my furnace wasn't working. Turns out Salvatore also disconnected a bunch of the furnace wires and never replaced them so it caused me a second repair call. I would not recommend their services unless very knowledgeable about the repairs or routine maintenance. read more

I had my AC, furnace, and humidifier replaced in July. He also installed a drop down filter grill and programmable thermostat. Ed took the time to review the options for my condo and provided a fair price. He was also flexible with my schedule. Ed made sure to keep his work area clean. AC ran like a charm during the hot summer. However, when I turned on the furnace for the first time, it worked but was making an annoying noise just before the burners turned on. I contacted Ed and he responded immediately. Turns out the fan inducer motor was faulty. He returned after a few days with a replacement part from the manufacturer, installed it, and now its working great. Ed has been responsive, flexible, and punctual. NEVER EVER CALL, BIG MISTAKE!! Called them from add. He came out and quoted the work. I gave him the go ahead. Never showed upon the first day as promised, 2nd day no show, and finally answered the phone and set a time to come back 3rd call. I showed up and questioned a minor problem I found. Denial at first, then rage, then all hell broke out. As other reviewers have pointed out, Ed the boss has a major temper problem. Police had to be called, he fled, not before destroying a compressor that he was working on by removing as many parts as possible before police arrive. He insulted lady on 2nd floor with every expletive word that you could think of because she asked him to leave. This man is a nut. A police report has been filed. The complete incident was captured on security cameras. If you ever question his work or price, beware what will happen next. read more

Very angry with my experience with Ed. He tried MAJORLY overcharging me, and got really angry when I didn't let him. He told me there was a $79 diagnosis fee before showing up. Great. He looks at my A/C unit (which takes all of 10 mins) and tells me it's the contactor that needs replaced, and that it will be $389 total. Skeptical, I call my father who is experienced with HVAC, but lives out of state, while Ed goes down to his truck. He says the part probably cost Ed $20, and that I could change it out if I really want to, it's that easy, and would only take someone ten minutes...So I ask him if I can just buy the part from him, he says no. I said okay, well I think that'll be all then because I think I can get it on my own for fairly cheap. Ed says "You made me walk all the way down to my truck and now you don't even want it?? Fine, but it's now going to cost you $139 for my services today because I had to take the unit apart". Excuse me?!?! That's what the diagnosis fee was for!! Sorry, Ed, for doing my research so I don't get ripped off. Got the part for $21, and did it myself, with no HVAC experience. He'll probably write me an angry response on here now, as he seems to do. Also, called another place to get a quote for the replacement...$80, which would have been fair. Unless you want to waste a ton of money and deal with a short-tempered man, call elsewhere. read more

I was in need of a new AC unit. I called Ed, and he came out and explained all of my options, and described which unit was best suited for my situation. Absolutely amazing service. My furnace broke down on a night when the low was -1 degrees. Ed wasn't able to make it to my apartment, but offered to FaceTime me to examine the furnace and walk me through troubleshooting the open limit switch. We had them out to do an annual clean up and check up on our furnace. The guy did fine work. Pretty much just vacuumed out all the dust and changed out some ignition switch that I knew needed to be replaced. Everything is working great. The reason I'm apprehensive to recommend the company is that the tech was basically a bigot and stayed well beyond his welcome. After normal conversation brought up the fact that my partner and I were teachers, he exclaimed that he was "shocked" that we would like our CPS students and called them "animals". Also claimed that white people have no rights anymore in this world and then went on and on about how crappy Chicago is and that we're crazy to want to keep living in such a corrupt town. This company is great. Last summer my AC tanked and I had called a company to fix it- hvac guy installed wrong coolant and left, and did not return phone calls. Second HVAC guy from different company came and would not touch ac unit and told me I needed a brand new one. I called Ed, and he made it a point to come ASAP since it was 90 degrees and we have two small children at home. Ed fixed my AC unit and it was very reasonably priced. This guy is a joke! He is the most unprofessional person I have ever 'attempted' to work with. I say 'attempted' because he never actually showed up for our appointment. We originally made an appointment for a Saturday morning at 8:30. When 9:15 passed and he still hadn't showed up, I decided to call him, even though it most certainly should have been the other way around. When I got a hold of him, he stated had been calling to cancel. Well, that would have been alright if he had been calling the correct number. But why didn't this extremely professional man have the correct number? Because he was so unorganized and was apparently reading the phone number of another victim of his, likely upsetting two "clients" in the process. His commentary? "I thought the voicemail sounded weird and not like you." Thanks, Captain Obvious! Try buying a planner or actually living in the modern age and downloading some software to help keep track of your clients so that you stop making avoidable mistakes. Like the glutton for punishment I am, I rescheduled for the following Monday at 5:30pm. Guess who had to place a call out at 6 p.m.? I'll give you a hint--it wasn't Ed "Mr. Punctual" P. His brilliant response this time? A nonchalant, "Yeah, I'm coming." Well, with being 30 minutes late and not bothering to give me a courtesy call, is there a way I could have known that? I'm not sure who the problem is at this point, because I actually allowed another reschedule for a few days later at 5:30pm. When I called (yes, I am the only one ever doing the call in this sorry relationship), Ed acted like he had no idea who I was. Then he said, "Oh yeah! I forgot...again. I'll call you back" and then hung up on me. When I attempted to call him back SEVERAL times, he did not even have the decency to answer the phone or actually call me back. A Great Heating & Cooling Service that is honest and very good. I had a big problem. My large hot water tank which is all solid state stopped heating the water. I called many contractors and had a different story from each one of them. I called Whirpool, the manufacturer and the gave me the name of a contractor in Chicago. The also told ne that all parts to my heater were covered by Whirpool for 12 years and that I would not get charged for the parts. I called the recommended contractor and they gave me a crzy price when I asked. So I had heard of Around the Town whom I had used previously for an air conditioning problem. they came the next day. The correct parts were ordered and in 2 days -- had to get the parts -- the hot water heater was as good as new and the price was very good. It is hard to find an honest Heating and Cooling guy but I highly recommend Ed Pavlik--a great guy and hones as the day is long. read more

After being let down by a competitor that was a no show for the window they gave, I called these guys. They did the install on the furnaces in my house before I bought it. I wasn't very impressed with the work done there, so I was reluctant to go to them. They gave me a time, not a window and showed up within 15 minutes of that. They were able to diagnose and correct the issue quickly, but I didn't get a concrete answer on what caused it. They suggested only using high flow filters because the corrugated allergen filters could burn out the motor. I think they charged around $190 for a half hour service visit - no parts needed. read more

I, too, would like to thank Ed for putting in a substantial amount of time to get an extremely troublesome problem fixed. I have a duplex condo in South Loop that has had A/C trouble for the entire 3 years I have been there, and the builder kept only covering the problem up with minor fixes. Ed diagnosed multiple issues with the system, and quoted me a fix that was $4000 less than others. Ed and his assistant replaced my furnace without replacing the compressor (which others wanted to do), and got my system functioning perfectly - for the first time I had to shut off the air at night because the bedroom was too cold! Ed also spent more than an hour, maybe two, explaining in detail what the system is supposed to do and why it wasn't functioning properly. He came back the next day - on his own dime - to fix an unrelated issue with the compressor's pressure valve, which required a few hours of work. They came out as soon as I was available (on a Saturday!) to take a look at it and determined that it would take some serious work. We keep being told some Dave guy will call us back with information - and he doesn't. We are told we will get a call within 24-48 hours with an updated on our AC install - and we don't. If I could give this guy a 0 star I would! I called to get a quote for a furnace switch replaced ( 15 min job), he told me the switch was $6 dollars, yes SIX, but he charges $80 to replace. I only said to him, Oh, I didn't expect it to be soo much to replace such a small switch.
