This is a hole in the wall kind of place, that if you're not looking for, you'll miss. That being said, keep your eyes open! The food was so good. I tried a bite of everything we had (my group decided to share family style), but since it was all ordered with a hot spice level I couldn't eat much more that. However, the actual flavor of it all was really delicious. The one thing I was a little sad about was that I ordered my own pad Thai with a mild spice level, and once I started eating it the waiter mentioned that the medium spice level can be pretty hot. So I realized he had made mine too spicy. I had to take the rest home because I couldn't finish it all in one sitting due to how spicy it was. With all of that in mind, do not pass this place over. I've been wanting to try Aroy for a long time and because it's not close to wear I live it's taken me a while to get there. I went in for lunch and was more than impressed with how delicious the food is and how friendly the service was! They have a lunch special, but my Thai favorite Pad See Ew wasn't on the list. I was still able to order it and I ate every bite! It was really good! The restaurant itself it decorated with a slight farm house feel which is interesting, but cute. I had been wanting to try this place for a long time. It is right near my house, so a perfect place to stop by when I'm near home. It's really more of a take out restaurant than a sit down restaurant. Thy do have tables available to sit, but you order at the counter and then they will bring it out if you choose to eat there. The pad Thai (medium spice) was pretty good. I asked for extra spices to add later if I needed to (which I did). There could've been more of the pad Thai sauce on it, it was a tad dry. The staff was really nice. I would come back again. It's literally within walking distance to my house. So it's very convenient. read more

Used to love this place. Last went about 6 mo ago (before tonight) and it's really gone down hill. To go menu is significantly skimmed down. Used to get a 5 spicy and thought I'd tone it down so ordered a 4 on my Tom Kha soup. I would've thought this was their "mild" level of spice. No heat at all, way less lemon grass flavor than there used to be. Their crab Rangoon was off. 3 seemed like they're under fried, or fried in bad oil. 2 are normal, but all are less full than usual. You can tell the difference in the fry in the photos. Boyfriend and 2 friends got 3 orders of Pad Thai (2 shrimp, 1 chicken). They're all pretty dry and not saucy at all. His 4 rating heat also tastes like they added no heat. Still good portion sizes though. Ended up adding sauce and red chili to all of them. Overall, if it was $2-3 cheaper per dish, I'd go back. This review is for the new owners. I'm sad to say that this place is no longer the same. The quality AND quantity of food is less. The Tom yum soup that I loved so much tasted watery and not as intense of flavors as it was before. The Pad Thai is still ok. The lovely basil beef was pretty sad, comparing to the original version. The portion looks like it should've been for lunch instead of dinner. I thought I'd give the new owners a second chance before writing a review, but a second chance they failed. Let's just start by saying Best Thai take out Ive had in Charlotte! I got the shrimp pad Thai and crab ragoons. The portions are very large. One order of pad Thai alone was enough to feed 3 ppl! (I even had enough left over for a snack the next day ) Also the amount of shrimp was fair. My crab Rangoons on the other hand were a little burnt and the filling was a little too cheesy for my liking. I'll probably skip those on my next visit but will definitely be back. I ordered takeout from Aroy last week, and got the Pad Thai with tofu, Green Curry with beef and Thai ice tea. Everything was delicious, and portions were large! Everything was nicely packed for togo. I ordered 5/5 spiciness (Thai hot), and the heat was actually very spicy, which was a pleasant surprise. They upped the heat with actual peppers instead of just pouring a bunch of pepper flakes into the dish, so the spiciness was actually integrated into the dishes and enhanced the flavor. The Pad Thai wasn't overly sweet, which is a common complaint I have against many Thai restaurants. The noodles themselves seemed perfectly cooked, and had a nice flavor and texture on their own. The tofu was nicely cooked and went great with the dish. The portion was large enough to make at least two meals. The Green Curry was very flavorful and had lots of different veggies and a good amount of beef, which is what you hope to be paying for. The portion was large enough to make two meals. The Thai tea (which I don't usually like) wasn't too sweet, and actually went great with the spicy food. It was really refreshing! Sadly things have changed at Aroy since there are now new owners. The quality of the food has definitely declined, as has the portion size. On the latest visit, the power was shut to the restaurant, though they still finished cooking the meals as they were using gas. The neighboring businesses in the center still had power. What a hidden gem! My husband and I recently moved to Mint Hill from Washington DC and were looking for good Thai food, close to our house. Don't let the location deter you! It's located between what looked like a strip club and a lingerie store, but the restaurant is clean and immaculately decorated inside. You get menus at your table and order at the window at the front of the restaurant. I loved the casual feel but upscale atmosphere. We shared the crab Rangoon (one of their specialties!) and both had the combination pad Thai. Both dishes were excellent! I've been to Thailand and eaten tons of authentic Thai food in DC and this was up there with the best. The food came out piping hot and fresh and the flavor was delicious. They also brought it samples of their curry puffs, which they said were another one of their specialties. Just recently returned from a trip to Thailand, I was searching for a restaurant with authentic Thai food. So given that disclaimer I had a really good idea on what Thai food should taste. So one day driving down Independence I noticed the sign for Aroy Thai restaurant and decided to pull over and try out their traditional Pad Thai dish. As soon as I walked in I was greeted kindly and immediately felt welcomed. I was told they had a to go style service which I'm not accustomed to but had no issues with it whatsoever. I ordered a mild spicy Pad Thai and a Thai iced tea. As I was waiting for the food I noticed the decor was very nice and cozy nothing fancy but just right the restaurant. When the food arrived at the table, (which didn't take long) I immediately felt like I was about to eat an authentic pad Thai dish and boy was I right!! The level of spiciness was perfect for being a mild spicy pad Thai dish. The choice of ingredients were very similar to the ones I tried in Thailand. The Thai iced tea was delicious and the quality of service was extremely good, I couldn't have been more satisfied. As I was enjoying my pad Thai dish I was offered a curry puff appetizer to taste for being a first time customer which was delicious and a really nice gesture. I would highly recommend Aroy Thai restaurant to anyone who is looking for authentic Thai food and Thai hospitality in the Matthews area. Try their curry puffs and shrimp shumai appetizers for starters, followed by Pad See Ew or their famous Pad Thai dish for an entrée accompanied by a delicious Thai tea. Brand new restaurant. Super neat and clean inside with cute decor. It's nice to have a close Thai spot on East Charlotte located off the hwy. Super friendly staff. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT. This used to be our favorite Thai place in Charlotte, and WOW did it ever change. They closed down for a couple of weeks for "renovations" -- okay, fair enough. Then, we come to learn that it's under new management, and that they're bringing in a new chef. This made us nervous, but little did we know what we were in for. What used to be huge portions of delicious food became minimalist takeout portions of food nowhere near as good as what it used to be. What used to be the sweetest woman on the phone turned into a man that couldn't be more impolite. On top of everything else, they stopped taking DoorDash orders, which is where we'd order Aroy at least once a week. They took everything we loved about this business, and did exactly the opposite. Most of the negative reviews, I'm guessing these people have never actually been to Thailand. And their spice level is equally real Thai. I absolutely loved the appetizers that we got. The spring rolls were piping hot, and I've never had curry puffs before and they were super yummy. Completely unprofessional. I ordered from here and got the food delivered via a food delivery service. The pad Thai noodles were completely stuck together and extremely dry. I rated the food on the delivery app and was met with a very condescending response. I was told if I wanted my food to taste good I should pick it up myself. If you can't produce quality food while offering a delivery service then maybe you should not offer delivery. They blamed it on the delivery driver and stated they didn't pick the food up for an hour which is 100% not true. This is a newly managed restaurant. Grandson loves Thai, so we decided to try something local rather than go into Uptown Charlotte. I got the Kai Pad Cashew Nut w/ Chicken. I'm not a Thai food regular, so I wasn't sure what I'd be getting, Just as long as it wasn't spicy. The food was good for what it was. I didn't care too much for the texture of the chicken, but it definitely had cashews, peppers, onions and pineapple. Had a side of rice as well. Grandson loved his spicy Pad Thai w/beef. Wife wasn't overly excited about her shrimp Pad Thai, not spicy enough for her taste. Service was very good and the owner was very friendly and came out to talk with us, as it was close to closing and nobody else was there except for us. The place was very clean and plenty of seating even though most of his business is take-out. I'd try something else on my next visit, but I'd definitely go back again. An honest guy trying to make a go of it in the Thai Restaurant business. The food was good, and it was fresh. We sampled various Thai Ice Tea flavors they have to offer while watching a Thai version of American Idol on the tv. Our waitress was by far one of the most friendly individuals I have ever met.
