The salsa (not free) was very flavorful and the chips were crispy and not too thin. The wait staff was friendly and while small, the seating area had plenty of tables. And, if you haven't tried Arriero's yet...you're in for a nice surprise! Located in the same strip as Fuego Burger (4400 Benbrook Hwy), I've been to Arriero's twice in the past few days. I must say...they have some of the best Mexican food I've encountered on this side of Fort Worth/Benbrook area. The restaurant is small, cozy, but with a great and friendly wait staff that are eager to please! The first time, I had the Bistec Ranchero ($9.50) with rice and beans (to-go). The ranchero sauce was simply succulent with tender strips of beef accompanied with rice and beans. The flour tortillas were home-made (not packaged), and the flavor was exquisite! The next time, I decided to eat inside. The waitress was friendly and all smiles. I decided on the taco plate (choice of various meats), and decided on the pork pastor filling. Tacos arrived plated with rice/beans, and piled high with flavorful meat ($6.50). The waitress also brought a couple of different sauces to try, and both were great. And the chips and salsa (free)...simply out-of-this-world GREAT!! If you haven't tried them yet...please do. They are definitely worth the visit, and getting an order to go is certainly an option. First visit. Small cozy place with a cool and a front counter person. Spanish speaking but English is fine too. The usual free chips and salsa and to me it was great, a little on the spicier side compared to other places. Drinks are bottles or cans American or Mexican, no fountain drinks. I ordered the carne asada plate with rice and beans and small salad on same plate. I wasn't impressed with the meat at all. Not seasoned much and just a little tougher than I prefer, I just don't like well done really. It was a large piece so it had a little gristle I had to take out while I was chewing, I really hate that. That was the only issue at this place. When you arrive you are greeted and you can choose any table that's open. After you place your drink order, you are given chips and salsa. I eat lunch solo most days, and I have been on a mission to try as many small, out-of-the-way lunch places as possible. This is my kind of place. I visited Arriero's about noon on a weekday last week. It's a small place, seats maybe fifty people total. It was about half full when I arrived, which is just how I like it. I hate it when I walk in the door at some new place I've never been before...only to find out I'm the only customer. It happens. The place is your standard stip-mall hole in the wall. Nothing fancy about it. TV on the wall with telenovelas going for ambience. I was seated promptly, and noticed that the lone server (obviously an owner) was speaking Spanish to most of the customers. Always a good sign at a place like this. I got the chicken flautas, and they took a while (like close to 20 minutes) to come out. But the server stopped by to apologize for the delay, which goes a long way toward making the wait seem not so bad. But they were good, and obviously made-to-order. Pretty standard rice and refried beans to go along with it. Nicely plated, too, especially for a place like this. I mean it didn't look like something from Mi Cocina when it came out, but pretty close. So anyway, for a dive lunch spot, I give it the full five stars. I'll definitely be back! Couple of quick notes: 1. When I first sat down, the server asked if I wanted chips and salsa. "Is this a trick question?" I almost asked. I'm in a Mexican food place...of course I want chips! And then after I gobbled them all up, I thought it was a little strange that they never refilled the chip basket, or even asked if I wanted more. Come to find out this is probably because they're $2.50, not free. I'm sure it says this in the menu, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here. But I didn't notice it anyway. 2. Soft drinks are server by the 12oz can (with a cup of ice of course) for $1.50 each. So it's not bottomless fountain soda like I'm used to. So I only drank 12oz of soda instead of my usual 80oz...albeit for only $1.50, instead of $2.75 like most places charge. read more

I saw that this small restaurant was full so expecting wonderful food. Service was average. They charge for chips and salsa, but it is reasonably priced and salsa is above average. I had the cheese enchiladas plate and it looked good, but unfortunately did not turn out that way. The sauce was super salty and the enchiladas were undercooked. When I got to the middle of the enchiladas, the cheese was not melted. I told the staff after I was leaving and she told me she would tell the kitchen, not apologizing for my experience. We hit Arrieros most times we visit from Austin. Quality is up there with the best Mexican restaurants in the Austin-San Antonio corridor where I live and eat. Last Sunday I had a simple huevos rancheros. Simple but perfect. Two eggs over easy covered with a mild, fine textured red sauce, delicious refried beans topped with a crumble of cotija cheese, and "Mexican potatoes": boiled, cubed, seasoned taters lightly browned w/ onions and peppers. The last bit sopped up with one of those tortillas. So incredibly good. Arrieros has _3_ spicy table salsas. a chunky red salsa, a spicier smooth red and a creamy green. All are first rate. Arrieros is a hidden gem on this low traffic stretch of Benbrook Highway. My oldest niece is a self-taught FW Mexican food expert, and it's her favorite (it's close to her house, but still). Based on the reviews, I really wanted to try Arrieros. But I walked in and about half the tables were taken and the other half were full of dirty dishes. I stood for a while thinking the waitress would clear a table. No luck. So I sat with dirty dishes while the waitress waited on everyone else. I sat there a full ten minutes no service. Always had good experience here as far as food goes - they've messed up order a couple times but the food is good and seems fresh. Ladies are very nice and seems they make most homemade including salsa and tortillas. Only disappointments ever had I'd say was queso which seemed canned, and ordered 6 tortillas that were overcooked. But the food is generally good. My only wish is they stayed open past 5PM for dinner!! I can't ever get food in time because they close so early otherwise I would order more often. Need to be open later for dinnertime since we don't eat at 4pm and I'm working locally but still can't get food. read more
