While the bahn mi isn't exactly traditional, it is still very good -- I'd highly suggest getting it with the pate. The sampler appetizer has a little bit of everything and is great for sharing. Pineapple fried rice was delicious. Pad Thai also great! If you're a spicy eater like me, just go for very spicy. Malai Kitchen in Clearfork is a welcome detour from a shopping afternoon, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine in a bright, airy space that makes you want to settle in for longer than your credit card probably intended. A quick note on seating: the patio is lovely in theory, with the optional open windows and a breezy feel, but the chairs are not winning any comfort awards. Inside booths are the move. Also worth noting, this is Fort Worth, and once the thermometer hits triple digits, the patio conversation ends itself if the windows are open. Plan accordingly. Malai starts every table with steamed sticky rice and an eggplant dip, which is a charming little ritual and a genuinely good one. We also kicked things off with the Edamame, a heads up on the heat level there, and the Fried Imperial Rolls, filled with ground pork and shrimp and served with a sesame soy sauce. Fair warning: these do not photograph well and arrive at the table looking a little shy. Don't be fooled. They're flavorful, subtly spicy, and well worth ordering. For entrees, we tried the Basil Vegetable Fried Rice two ways, one vegan and one with chicken. The vegan version was a genuine surprise, with vegetables cooked just right and a flavor that didn't need the chicken to make its case. The mushrooms, however, had the texture of something you'd find in a hardware store. Chew at your own risk. The Green Curry, meanwhile, was a case of too much of a good thing. The curry was so heavy-handed it drowned everything underneath it. Sometimes restraint is a virtue. Save room for the Banana Pot de Crème. It's creamy, subtly sweet, and a graceful finish to the meal. The service at Malai is enthusiastic, and I do mean enthusiastic. The staff works as a team, all smiles, attentive, always nearby. Occasionally a little too nearby. More than once a plate nearly disappeared before we were done with it. It's a small complaint, and honestly a far better problem than the alternative. They're warm, cheerful, and clearly enjoy what they do, which goes a long way. Portions are generous, so order a few dishes and share the wealth. Customer service was excellent even when it's busy. We didn't get a reservation we tried but the ladies at the front counter said they had some open tables. Good timing, we waited maybe less than 10 minutes than got seated. Our server Dawson was attentive and cool, he explained anything we asked and gave some suggestions on the specials they had. They bring your water and also a serving flask which is a great idea. We ordered some drinks a house cocktail and I had an IPA. The crab dip and some meat wraps? You can pick your spice level too. I had one of their dinner specials I believe it was a seared ahi dish and she had a red jungle pot curry dish with shrimp. They also give you Thai sticky rice. Malai Thai-Vietnamese Kitchen Last night I picked up dinner from Malai Thai-Vietnamese Kitchen in the Clearfork area of Fort Worth, and even though it was just a quick stop, this place already earned a return visit from me. Next time I'm definitely sitting down to enjoy the full vibe because the corner location and surrounding area are really nice. I ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice with chicken, and one detail immediately stood out. A lot of places throw in huge pineapple chunks that overpower the dish. Not here. The pineapple was carefully diced into small pieces, which let it blend beautifully with the seasoned fried rice instead of stealing the show. Every bite had just a hint of sweetness balanced with the savory garlic-turmeric sauce. The rice was loaded with fresh ingredients--egg, green onions, carrots, bean sprouts, tomatoes, peanuts, and cilantro--and everything tasted fresh and well thought out. It's clear the kitchen actually pays attention to the details. This was just a pickup order, but the food alone convinced me I'll be back to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere next time I'm in Fort Worth. Today was our first visit to Malai Kitchen and it was excellent. We decided to have a late lunch and the red is in a great location. Our waiter was very informative and gave us really good suggestions on what to choose. There were five of us in our party and everyone decided to order something different so we could share. We ordered the Lemongrass Chicken Vermicelli Salad, the Drunken Noodles, the Chicken Pho soup (it has a different name on the menu), the Pineapple fried rice with Chicken and the Glass Noodles with Shrimp! We were craving Asian food and decided to come to Malai kitchen. I am very appreciative that they have a free parking garage because this area gets very crowded and has limited street parking. Once we got to Malai we were seated pretty quickly and we sat out on their patio. It was a beautiful day and the patio has some nice covering, so, it wasn't super sunny. Once we were seated, our waitress came by and got our drink orders and answered questions on the menu. My husband got the chicken wings for an appetizer and he asked for the mild option. When they came out they had jalapenos on them. The manager Karissa, brought them to our table, and when she realized the mistake, she immediately took them back and made sure that they came back correctly. I ordered the lunch special for Friday. Which was glass, noodles and I got it with tofu. My husband and kid got the fried rice. While we waited for our food, they also bought out complementary, sticky rice with a very tasty dipping sauce. My husband loved the wings when they came out and they were huge.They were so big, he had to take most of them to go. When we got our food, our portion sizes were also very large. I was pleasantly surprised, especially because I got special. So I assumed that my food might be half the size but it looked like it was a full size. It was super flavorful and cooked perfectly. I wanted a little more spice and they brought me out chilis so that I could add them to my dish. I wanted to try their in-house drinks, but they are brewery. I'm not a big beer drinker but, the manager still brought me a sample just to make sure I wasn't missing out on something I might like it. It wasn't for me but I appreciate the hospitality. I passed on a drink but we enjoyed the patio seating. The consistent customer service that we got, especially from the manager and the food was superb. We will definitely go back. I wasn't a huge fan of Thai food, but that changed once I came to Malai Kitchen! I ordered the yellow curry bowl with chicken and jasmine rice, and it was incredibly flavorful and satisfying. I don't have a huge spice tolerance, so I got mild spice for the curry, and it had the perfect amount of spice for me. We were thankfully able to make a same day reservation on a Sunday for a party of 8. The servers were so kind and even boxed up our leftovers for us. We were seated in a side room, which had plenty of bright lighting. However, I feel like the main dining area had a cozier ambiance with stylish light fixtures and booth seating. There is plenty of lot parking available around the Clearfork area, along with complimentary garage parking. We've been wanting to try this place. First off, the restaurant is kept very clean and all of the staff are very attentive to your table even if you already have a waiter/waitress assigned, so I love the teamwork. My boyfriend ordered the medium spiced Pad Kee Mow with chicken and it was really yummy and flavorful, but a little too spicy for my liking. The noodles were good and had the perfect chew to it and our waitress said they make it in house, so that was nice. I ordered their Pad Thai which also had great flavor, but it didn't taste like the traditional pad Thai. You can taste the flavor of it being cooked on the wok and the pickled bean sprouts gave a different twist to the dish. That's the pink and yellow toppings on the dish. Again, it's not something I'm used to with my pad Thai, so that seemed like a creative take on it. What I feel it was lacking was the tamarind flavor, which is the signature flavor of Pad Thai, so I was a little disappointed on that. Overall, a pretty nice Thai place to visit. read more

I went to Malai Thai for dinner recently, and honestly, it was a big letdown. I started with the Thai chicken wings (bone-in), and I was actually surprised by how much I liked them. I'm usually not a big fan of bone-in wings, but the flavor was super authentic. Definitely a nice way to kick off the meal. For my main, I got the Pad See Ew with chicken, and this was a huge disappointment. The noodles were completely burnt. I could smell it and taste it right away. I mentioned it to the server who offered to replace it for us but I reused. I couldn't believe something that burnt even made it to the table. Definitely not what I expected. I also got the pineapple fried rice, and this one was just okay. It was slightly overcooked and had a faint burnt taste again, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the Pad See Ew. It was still decent enough to eat, but nothing special. The seared scallops with noodles were fine. Nothing amazing, but not bad either. The real star of the night was the peanut-encrusted ruby trout, hands down my favorite dish. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the sauce it came with, kind of a coconutty tomato lime sauce, was really good. Even the rice was served with this green sauce that I really enjoyed. At the end, they served sticky rice, which was fine, pretty standard, nothing to rave about. Overall, I went in expecting a lot more from this place. Some dishes were decent, but the burnt food was unacceptable. I didn't order anything else after that just because of how off-putting the burnt dish was. Otherwise, I would have gotten dessert, which I was really craving, but I ended up skipping it and getting something else down the street instead. read more

Came here for a ladies night book club based solely on reviews and ratings. It did not disappoint! Everyone ordered something different and we couldn't stop oooo-ing over how flavorful all the dishes were. (See pictures) Our server was new and being trained but did a good job. This place is very popular, as it should be, so if you want to not have to wait make a reservation and be on time for that reservation. Consistently one of my favorite restaurants!! I'm really thankful to have multiple locations across DFW. For one, I love both Thai and Vietnamese food, so a restaurant giving me both is a dream. Two, they have a ton of gluten free options clearly marked on their regular menu, thank you! Lots of traditional Thai and Vietnamese dishes are naturally gluten free, but Malai still goes above and beyond with their gf offerings. Three, they have a great cocktail menu and a small but lovely wine list. And delicious desserts! And while you'll likely spend a bit, you'll want to, because it's affordable considering the menu variety and quality, the ambiance, and the service. I'll just mention a few dishes I've had that I really enjoyed and recommend. I think they're all good for sharing too. Lemongrass mussels ($17): a big bowl of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) mussels steamed in a sweet and savory broth made of coconut milk, white wine, butter, red jalapeños, tomatoes, lemongrass, garlic, Thai chili, and Thai basil. It's sooo fragrant and yummy. Gluten eaters may rejoice in soaking up this fabulous broth with grilled toasty banh mi bread, which comes with the dish! Shishito peppers ($11): a pile of lightly battered Japanese peppers with lemon zest, pink Himalayan salt, and a sweet chili sauce for dipping. Most of these peppers are super mild but they're all delicious. Chicken pad Thai ($18): a stunning farm fresh egg and the silkiest tofu ever tossed with rice noodles in tamarind sauce, crushed peanuts, carrots, green onion, and bean sprouts. It's a pretty classic and fantastic pad Thai -- I can't imagine anyone has ever regretted ordering it. Basil veggie fried rice ($15/$18 with added protein): another perfect egg, green onion, carrots, bean sprouts, tomato, bell pepper, broccoli, shiitake mushrooms, and Thai basil. Who doesn't love fried rice? I could go on. I love their Massaman curry! And they have a gluten free coconut cream pie right now that's absolutely perfect ($10 for an enormous slice): a made-from-scratch pie with a toasty, crunchy, coconut macaroon crust, a glorious coconut custard, and tons of fresh, fluffy meringue. It's served with a tamarind-caramel, house-made coconut gelato, and sliced mango. It's absolutely insanely YUM, even better than it sounds, and you know it sounds goooooood. read more

I scooped the hubby and headed here for a Saturday brunch. This restaurant has a special brunch menu and offers their lunch menu from 11am-3pm. Being a ravenous "brunchaholic," I ordered the Thai Eggs Benedict from the brunch menu and the hubbs had the Vietnamens soup with beef broth and a poached egg. We also got a Thai iced coffee with coconut milk, sans the simple syrup, and a bloody mary. Guests are started off with complimentary sticky rice in banana leaf with a side of spicy eggplant sauce. What a lovely and delicious surprise! Both meals were awesome. The shrimp on the benedict were tender and well-seaonsed, the biscuits were good {not the best, but good}, and the cheesy rice grits were a perfect side. The pho broth was well balanced, not salty, and loaded with noodles that were obviously house-made. Both dishes also had perfectly poached eggs. We enjoyed the Thai iced coffee, but felt that the bloody mary had way too much salt in the mix. Our server (forgot her name) was delightful. She was energetic, super sweet, and checked on us appropriatlely. OMGoodness! I almost forgot to mention the exquisite coconut cream pie I had for dessert. Wowzers -- it was amazing and topped off with house-made gelato. This dessert is plenty enough for two. Of course, you don't have to worry about parking here since there is a free parking tower in this shopping and restaurant center. There's simply no reason to not check this restaurant out. I haven't been here before, so this was the first time, and it did not disappoint There's plenty of seating within the establishment, and the waiters were very professional, and knowledgeable about the menu. We decided to go with the daily special and a couple of appetizers. Overall, we had a great experience and we highly recommend this place. Malai Kitchen 5289 Monahans Ave Fort Worth, TX 76109 Upscale Pad Thai / Vietnamese cuisine. But that doesn't mean expensive. I got out of there with a meal, dessert, and house made lemonade for $40 including tax. The dessert was 1/4 that and worth more. But more about that later. And it included a take home bottle of the house made Sriracha Sauce. When you arrive they bring you a small sticky rice wrapped in a banana leaf (don't eat it) and side dipping sauce. I unwrapped mine so you could see it. The dipping sauce is a mixture of eggplant and other vegetables blended with a variety of spices. I seasoned mine a little with their Sriracha Sauce. The perfect appetizer. Not too filling. Just enough to whet your appetite in preparation of the main course. For the main course I had the Bangkok Street Rice (Pad Grapao). This dish was amazing and consisted of seasoned minced pork with Thai basil, served on a bed of seasoned jasmine rice. It was topped with a perfectly cooked over-easy egg (Sorry I cut up the egg before I remembered to take a photo). It also had a medley of carrots, onion, cilantro, thai chilies, and warm sliced cherry tomatoes. I took half home so I would have enough room for my highly anticipated dessert. Dessert. Coconut Cream Pie to die for. Literally the best I've ever eaten. This alone made the experience worth it. This is a made from scratch pie like no other. It is layered with a coconut macaroon crust, coconut custard, and fresh meringue. Somewhere in there was toasted coconut. It is served over tamarind caramel and topped with house-made coconut gelato with thinly sliced mango on top. I have never mixed gelato with a meringue pie but this really worked. Each bite of this pie is an extravaganza. Trust me. They prepare fresh coconut each morning. Amazing. Service was fantastic. Forgive me if I'm wrong but I believe his name is Brian. Such a nice guy and he made sure my every need was answered. Thank you. I didn't know what to expect but I do know I was pleasantly pleased. And the ambiance was fantastic. They will see me again. Holy moly! My husband and I visited this immaculate restaurant for the first time and we were WOWed. Beautiful restaurant and an extremely hardworking and impressive team made for a very special evening. The food was delicious. I had the drunken noodles and my husband had one of the curries. For context, we've lived in Asia, my husband has been to Thailand over twenty times, and we have Thai friends--two of whom own and operate restaurants. Neither entrée had any heat whatsoever. The Panang curry was bland and grainy--more like a beef stew than a curry. The Drunken Noodles were just as flavorless. The spring rolls were passable, but even the peanut sauce was missing that rich peanut flavor you look forward to. To make matters worse, the whole meal came to $90, which only added insult to injury given the lack of flavor, authenticity, and overall quality.
