I like this place a lot. The front bar is a little more lively and a bit too loud, but the back room is very comfortable and quiet. Great little couches, pillows, dim lighting. Very comfortable. Perfect ambiance for a decent conversation. Mostly fried snacks available as apps, and they're all satisfyingly crispy and salty. Highly recommend the Thick Cut Onion Rings! $4.50 and just perfect for a drink. The Chili Dog with Cheese I had for $4.50 reallllly hit the spot, too (plus, just having it on the menu is intriguing). The service in the back can be slow, but that's not a huge deal. It's also quite inexpensive for the area - beers are like $7, and my bourbon wasn't much more. Hung out here briefly with a friend who was drinking at the bar. The only thing I can comment on is the fact that they had the huge "Protect Your Heart" graphic in the back and I thought that was awesome. This is my favorite place for happy hour in the West Village. Location is great as it's close to the Whitney, Samsung 837, and the Highline. The back room is so cozy--sofas, art, candles galore. It does get very warm back there though! It can get pretty loud and crowded if you go Thurs-Sat, but otherwise an awesome spot to grab drinks after work. The food and drinks are well priced (even if it isn't happy hour). More specifically on the food--I've had the quesadilla, chicken fingers, and Brie/tomato/guac sandwiches. All delicious! read more

We were in the back room for a birthday celebration, and it was 100% fine. Their martinis are really good (and reasonably priced at $10). Their beer selection ain't bad. There's also a super cool pop culture take on The Last Supper against the back wall. Only complaints were it was super warm, and they don't seem to understand how tabs work. I get that we were a large group and it got confusing, but our waitress was literally closing out our table's tab every round. It made things so much more confusing, especially when she told us we could just give her a card and tell her what to charge on it. The service is TOP NOTCH and the manager Alexis is always a sweetheart to me and all my friends who come there. I always meet new people and it's a very open and fun atmosphere for all ages. I absolutely love this bar. I came on a Friday night, it was crowded (as expected). My friends and I managed to grab a table at the lounge area in the back. The ambiance is intimate and low key, perfect for a date or groups. The happy hour specials are tough to beat, with $3.50 draft beers, wines, and well drinks from 4-7pm. The food was also impressive. I ordered curly fries and vegetarian dumplings, and wasn't expecting much since it was a bar. However, the dumplings blew me away! They came in an authentic steam basket and the filling was generous and flavorful. The only negative is that we were told we couldn't order drinks from the bar because a waitress was walking around taking orders. Ours was a female bartender with brown hair and a ponytail who definitely exuded a cold personality with a scrunched-up facial expression and an "F-off" attitude through body language, lack of personality, and disinterest in customer engagement. What can you expect from a small unassuming bar with a dank bathroom and cheap booze? This isn't no quality-controlled upscale place. This bar has a dozen or so bar stools plus some table seating including one large booth by the window. The interior was decorated with bats and was adequately festive for Halloween. The drink I had was a rum and coke, prepared fairly quickly and made strong. For $3.50 HH well drink, I can't complain. For a Sunday afternoon, it was reasonably full of guests, some of which were douchey fratty dudes making loud offensive and vulgar comments. You can't really control what people say at a bar but as staff you have more control over them than your guests and can kick out disruptive guests. Came here on a Saturdya night with some friends, and it seems as if the universe was on our side as we managed to find a place straight away. The bar is usually pretty busy because their back area is closed for private events most of the time. Their food is mostly great and very affordable. From the Mexican inspired dishes, I wouldn't order their guac and chips again, but the quesadilla was great. The burger was like 10$, and it wasn't cooked to the temperature I requested, but it was still pretty good. But if you dont like medium/ well done burgers get something else. Hopefully it was just the staff for tonight (Monday July 24th, 2018) but our service was truly awful, and we are professional waiters saying this. Meaning that we'll defended a waiter (who's at least trying their best) to the death. I showed up after my friend, who said that we have to keep ordering at the bar cuz there's no table service. Turns out there was indeed a waitress doing table service. But the bartender still had to give me my drink even though i was at a table. Then we watch our waitress eat food at the bar, then LICK HER FINGERS, while my glass is getting empty and i just want a second round. Then she comes and stands right in front of our table looking at the front door (not seeing my empty glass at all). We have to waive her down to get a second round while she's standing right in front of us. . Then we see a girl from another table try to order at the bar. We hear her telling the bartender "we haven't seen a waitress all night" while he laughs it off. Then we watch him tell her about it and they both laugh. By this point we ask for our check. We can't stay there a second longer. For the only time in living memory, i leave no tip. As someone who pays her rent with tips, I'd love to call that a "no no" cuz most people are honestly doing their best. But watching her lick her fingers while i was hoping to get a glass of wine, and then watching her and the bartender laugh off a legitimate complaint from another table, i could not in good conscience pay this woman for her "work" . We left less than $1. I can only hope that this review guides the waitress and bartender both to what they really need to be doing with their lives, which is clearly not waiting tables. read more

Ok, I'm only selfish since this is one of the few cool, unpretentious, non-wine bar, hang outs that remain in the West Village. And it's ridiculously close to my apt. So find your own neighborhood bar or please only go there sparingly. At the Art Bar, I always have good time. Servers are pleasant, not snotty, and the patrons seems to be cheerful. I think this is helped by the decor which eclectic, engaging but not brooding. The front of the bar is reminiscent of a 1950s diner, complete with circular leather booths and sputnik lamps. The back of the bar lives up to its namesake by including some varied and engaging art on the exposed brick walls, reminiscent of "old NYC" (before it became Disneyland). There is a nice array of worn, old couches and tables to truly relax and mellow. Winter bonus: Working fireplace. if you are a female, let me translate: "Oh, it's SUPER cute". The front of the bar is typical bar - well, umm a bar and then there are booths across from the bar. Many people may think that this is all there is to the place. You would be mistaken, my friend. There is plenty more to Art Bar. This place is business up front and party in the back. If you walk past the bar and through some curtains, you enter a much larger room with a high ceiling and tons of couches and ottomans. It is my favorite place to sit for drinks. It is a bit less nuts than the front bar. The service is good, too. The servers are never too far away and they turn around drink orders quickly. Two of the bartenders are gay and the manager is a card carrying honorary gay; she created this great "Pride Wall" for World Pride where you can scribble your thoughts in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Despite the astounding number of dark, swanky bars in Manhattan, I always find myself at Art Bar. I admit half the reason I go here is because it is conveniently located near my office and subway line, but the other half is assuredly because this place is just straight up awesome. The back room, like previous reviewers have mentioned, is where you want to be. Do yourself a favor and make a beeline for it; upon first glance, you will never, ever even think of sitting in the front room. The back room is stuffed with large, plush couches of various hues; the brick walls are adorned with hipster boho-esque paintings, the largest of which invites the patron to have the "Last Supper" with mid 20th century pop culture royalty. My seat of ultimate preference here would obviously be next to John Lennon, but since that's impossible, I'll guess a velvet hug from the couch below will do. I have never been here at a non-happy hour time, so I can't remark about wait time; still, service can be a little slow even during weekday evenings. I have also never been on a date here, but I imagine it would be a pretty good place for one -- after all, the eternal dimness of this place has never stopped couples from making out, fighting, and then making out again on couches directly across the room from me at 6pm. For those hard of breathing/sensitive to humidity, take note that back room does not have any windows; the air can get quite stale and suffocating during the summer. Decent cocktails, but if you're like me and are looking to drink your sorrows away after hours of slaving away in front of a cold, thankless monitor all day, down several glasses of wine ($3/glass) or beer ($3/10 oz? glass). The price and quality of alcohol is good enough for you to get guiltlessly (at least from a financial standpoint) buzzed. Treat yourself to some nachos while you're at it as well.
