Very impressed with Connection Salon! Love it, great place, comfortable, relaxed. My review is a little late, but I went back to the salon about a month ago. I wanted something new but not drastic, so I dyed my hair for the first time thanks to Loxy. She is extremely friendly, talkative and funny- a really cool person in general. She put me at ease about my new color, and also cut my hair because it was growing really bulky at the ends. I love my new color, it's nothing drastic, but you can definitely tell it's lighter and perfect for summer. I don't know what else to say, this place just gives you a good atmosphere and you feel safe in the hands of the people who work here. My mom and I went on the same day, and she had a haircut with Brad. He did a very fine job, and my mom looks amazing, she has been getting compliments from all our friends & family. Connection Salon, where do I start? So it was my first time today going to this beauty salon and I'm the type that is very picky with my hair, but thanks to these reviews I decided to give it shot. The salon is very beautiful inside, organized and clean. The person who did my hair was the owner Alejandro (awesome hairstylist), I showed him a picture of what I wanted and he immediately started doing his magic. Alejandro is great, you can tell he has experience. Very detailed with your cut, makes sure your hair is just right, I loved that. Some stylists do stuff in a hurry and aren't that detailed, like he is. I also dyed my hair (re-touch) he knew what color will go with the color I already had and dyed my hair calmly, without making a mess or leaving any color stains. The best thing is, he didn't use bleach so my hair won't get damaged and the color came out perfect. The price for everything was even BETTER and affordable. New to Chicago and not having my lovely LA salon to go to, I came here for the first time (it seems) just like everyone else: because of the rating on Yelp. 5 stars and a discount for mentioning "Yelp". Sign me up. Or so I thought... I called and asked if there was anyone that specialized in cutting curly hair. The person on the phone said "Everyone here does." And I said "Great! Are there any available appointments today?" "Sure, today at 3:30pm with Roxy." I was told. Stoked, I immediately jumped in my car & headed to Humbolt Park. Upon entering the salon, I was greeted and pointed to the person that was going to cut my hair. Turns out her name was Loxy, not Roxy. I took out the printed photos of hairstyles I was aiming for. My hair was relatively short to begin with. I simply wanted to take off 2-3 inches so it'd be at my ears. You'd think no big deal, right? Wrong. Loxy looked confused the entire time I was explaining what I wanted. She evetunally said she could do it no problem and ushered me to the sink. Hair washed and back in the chair now, Loxy went on to do her thing. We started the typical chit-chat-20-questions routine between stylist & customer just like at any other salon. Except: Loxy seemed to be distracted. She chopped away at my hair & with every cut I was getting more nervous & thinking to myself, "This girl has no idea what she's doing." She explained that she had been cutting hair for 7 years. No way. She used texturizing shears on my hair, which 1. I've been told aren't the greatest thing to use on curly hair and 2. I didn't want my hair layered or texturized in anyway. Loxy kept telling me how SHE thought my hair should be & even suggested giving me a Rianna-asymmetrical-hair cut. Ugh. Ew. No thank you. Loxy might have been frustrated or just tired of working, but at one point, she handed me the flat iron to do my own hair. Completely unprofessional. She eventually just said "Okay, You're done!". I left with hair all over my neck & back. Ugh. So unacceptable. I'm sure if I saw Alejandro or anyone else in the salon, my experience/this review would be a complete 180. But I didn't. I went to the Connection Salon on impulse. I needed a haircut like nobodies business and was tired of going to the stylist I've had for the past 8 years. I wanted a different look and knew I had to go somewhere new if I wanted some serious change. I'm extremely picky about who does my hair because I'm biracial so I have "that good hair". I called on a Saturday morning and was able to get in by noon with Loxy. When I described what I wanted she didn't understand so we hopped online and found some examples. This chick gave me the best hair cut I've ever had!! It looks dope. She didn't charge me for a full cut because she felt like she didn't really do anything. She pretty much cut in the style, cut the dead ends and gave it some layers. She hooked me up with some products and told me when the shorter side started growing out to go back and see her and she'll trim it for free...AWESOME. For months now my hair has been an ugly mess of 3 inches of dark roots followed by washed-out dyed-with-the-box auburn/brown type color. It looked horrible. Every time I put my hair up in a ponytail or bun my head was dark but my mane was a bright reddish. I finally searched on Yelp for salons with good reviews. I went to Urban Lift, Bang!, Emmett Rode, Salon Michael, and Connection-Salon. Now I'm not saying anything bad about the other salons, but they just didn't seem very helpful when I told them what kind of color I was looking for. With the exception of connection, they all just told me prices and handed me a card. At Connection, I got great customer service from Moi. He actually sat me in a chair, showed me the different types of highlights he can do with my hair, he brought me a color book and we discussed colors that would work. It was awesome, he was able to understand exactly what I wanted! I came back the very next day, and I have to say, I didnt think he was very experienced but I was wrong! My hair came out so awesome!!! We dyed it close to my natural color so I can let my hair grow out, and he added some blond peek a boo highlights inside the hair that contrast amazingly. I followed the trail of good reviews into the front door of Connection earlier today and one hour later I walked out with a haircut I'm digging on and a smile on my face. I recently moved to Wicker Park where I'm surrounded by handfuls of salons that I'm fairly sure could deliver a great men's haircut, but I'm just not willing to pay $50. Was there not a place near me that I could get that great haircut but for just a mediocre haircut price? Luckily I didn't have to go too far to find what I was looking for; 6 minutes of pedaling had me at Connection Salon on the east edge of Humboldt Park. I walked in the door and met the head stylist (and owner), Alejandro, who not only impressed me with his talent and attention to detail, but also with the ease at which conversation came. He was great at listening to what I wanted, offering suggestions when I asked, explaining his methods along the way, giving styling tips, and was an interesting person to have a conversation with in general. So I found a great haircut, but how about the price? Well, it was $25 for my men's shampoo & cut, but they are currently offering 20% off (through Oct 31, 2009) if you mention that you found them on Yelp so it came to $20 before tip. Overdue review. I bought a Groupon for a Brazilian wax here back in April. I believe I went shortly after for the service. What prompted me to come back and write a review is my most recent and wonderful wax experience today at a different salon. I referenced this experience/review I that I forgot to write as "amateur night". Sorry but in comparison, it's totally true. I've gotten waxes long enough to know the difference. I remember giving my friend a verbal review of this place literally as I was getting in the car to leave, but I didn't bother writing it out until now. Basically, the room was really small and cramped. Juanita was very nice, we chatted it up while I was there, etc. but I felt like I was participating way too much. Yes, I said participating. I understand needing to hold a leg or cheek every now and again, but I was literally getting my hands "dirty" the entire time. It's already hard enough to relax during a Brazilian so I definitely didn't appreciate the "hmm, let's see... hold here... now maybe here... yup, don't move..." instruction that went on during my entire appointment. Also I felt like she pulled such small pieces each time that the pain lasted FOREVER because it was almost constant doing bit by bit by bit for 30 minutes. No thanks. I still gave 2 stars because if I recall I was able to make an appointment the same day I called, and Juanita was cool. read more

A co-worker (and all of her friends) recommended I see Juanita for my bikini wax. I have very sensitive skin and every wax I had received in the past left me bruised, sore, red and even bleeding! I had my hair cut here about two weeks ago and although I can't remember the name of the girl who cut my hair I am very happy with the cut. Even though I was only in for a trim I still left with a new style. A style that even works with my wonky waves when I'm too lazy to blowdry! Excellent. Juanita, the esthetician, did a phenomenal job on my waxing. She takes her time, never rushed, and even fixed my butchered eye brows that a previous salon did. One eyebrow was set much higher then the other! Just picture it! She makes waxing MUCH less painful then anywhere else i've been and if you need your sensitive lady areas to be waxed I'd book an appointment with her right away. Very calming and relaxing. She is truly something special I'm sorry but you will not find another person who will wax like she does. IF you have sensitive skin, be verbal because no one is a mind reader. I don't want someone to read these reviews and then have minor irritation and say "but they had good reviews!" Yes they are very very good but you need to know what works best for you BEFORE you get anything done so you can tell that person what to use and what not to use. I have not had a mani/pedi or any other services yet so I can't say anything about that, but as far as waxing please do yourself a favor and book with Juanita, you will not be sorry! I was visiting Chicago from out of town and took a chance on this place. Alejandro was so nice. More importantly, he colored my hair better than any hairdresser before him. Color is tricky. I told him I was concerned about my hairs' tendency to turn red, instead of blond. He took his time and the color came out perfectly. He also did a beautiful job styling my hair. Later a neighbor told me Alejandro won a Chicago hair styling competition a few years ago and has a super reputation throughout the city. It was just luck on my part that his salon was the closest salon from my nieces' house. Oh I love this place! Moi cut my hair and it looks amazing. I hate getting my hair cut -- I hate it so much that if you made me choose between the dentist and getting my hair cut I would choose dentist. I just have the worst luck with hair stylists. In the past 5 or so years my hair got butchered by a guy who was late for the Prince concert and took it out on my head, a woman who asked me how much I wanted cut off -- I said "an inch" she cut some and showed it to me and I walked out with hair 4" shorter, and my favorite... the woman who I had a nice long discussion with regarding how my hair should be cut and then she ignored it and cut my hair just like hers. Not good. So I just keep trying new places and I've *finally* found someone who took one look at my hair (bad previous cut plus 6 months of growth) and knew exactly what I was going for and then executed an amazing cut -- and for $40! I tried repeatedly to get someone on the phone to schedule me and my bridal party this past December. The individual who took my calls said that he would give my messages to the manager and that they would get back to me. Well no one ever did. I ended up finding salon to take care of us that day. And that salon was absolutely wonderful. Sorry Connection Salon but you guys missed out on $1300. Maybe next time you will return your messages and get back to potential clients. You guys are obviously not a serious business because no business I know turns their backs and ignores opportunities to make money. read more

I went back last night and was impressed by the service I received. I haven't had a proper facial before, and wanted to try something in the hood. I'm 28 and my skin is changing, so I figured it might be time to start incorporating more care into my routine. After thumbing through Connection's facial menu, trying to pick the right facial for myself, I realized this made no sense. I instead popped in when I had some time and just asked if Juanita (the skin care pro here) could do a consultation. She took me in her fun, bright pink room (not tacky) right away and looked over my skin. She said she could do a custom facial or me, and mentioned her ideas, which included microdermabraisian (MA). I thought MA was for older skin, but admitted I had no clue what the protocol was here. This world was all knew to me. A week later, I came in for my treatment. Honestly, it wasn't "fun." I thought a facial was supposed to be relaxing and pampering; it was painful. Some of the serums burned my skin, and the extractions hurt. The MA was a weird sensation, almost like you were sanding your skin down. Don't get me wrong, you're not sitting for 1.5 hours of torture. There are lots of cooling serums, and a steam wand, which is nice. Juanita walks you through what she is about to do, and what you can expect next, so you are never surprised. I just had no idea that this is what facials were! Then I learned through experience-results aren't instant! I went home and felt a little inflamed. Again, she totally warns you of this. I also had a hormonal breakout when I decided to go through the process, so that's a hard variable to factor in. A few days later I got scaly (like Juanita said I would) and my skin felt dry. I was really discouraged and disappointed. What had I paid all this money for?! Five days post treatment, my skin took a turn and really started to look great. Juanita had worked on an unsightly, STUBBORN clogged pore on my nose that had been there for over a year. She took a special wand to it that kind of zaps it (delivers oxygen to it), Its texture has changed, and I think it's finally healed!!! This alone was worth the price. My entire epidermis looks and feels amazing now-I should have never questioned her. Let this woman do work on your skin! read more

Even though I live in the far western suburbs, I will definitely go back to Alejandro. I've tried dozens (if not more) of hair stylists in the burbs at all price levels and it seems like they just don't get it. I have very short hair, and every suburban stylist is too afraid to cut it as short as I want it - to the point where I would have to convince them I won't get mad at them. Over the weekend at a festival I saw a women (Julie, from Piano Man) with a beautiful short cut and she gave me Alejandro's info. I booked the first available appointment the next day. Alejandro is SKILLED. In my 20+ years with short hair, I've never had a stylist spend so much time on the details and use so many different techniques. It was not just a hair cut, it was an experience. We talked about the trials and tribulations of business ownership (since we are both self-employed) which I found refreshing, over the dull banter in which I'm usually forced to participate. After my experience, I'm happy to say that I'll definitely visit Alejando again, and would even if I had to cross town to do so. I have thick, difficult hair with hidden cowlicks. (Cute, huh?) The guy that cuts my hair is named Ambrocio and he recently moved to this salon. I'm glad he moved to this spot because I really enjoy it. Juanie is the ONLY person I trust with my waxing! I haven't gone to any other salon since my first appointment with her. She shapes them so beautifully, plays 90's R&B in the background and I get to enjoy girl talk with one of the sweetest gals. My skin is very sensitive and she's adjusted her routine with my face so that I no longer leave with redness. She always spends extra time to make sure I look amazing and gives honest advice. If you have thick, unruly, thin, or even naturally faded brows, go to her! She's also a makeup artist and can help you out with filling them in properly. A week ago, I called to find out information on the facials at Connection Salon. Since their website was not updated for their March Specials, it would be best to call and ask as well as find out prices for add-ons, as well as the type of microdermabrasion utilized at salon. I got a call back from Juanita, who identifies herself as the Esthetician that does facials among other services. We get into a conversation that lasted about 20minutes. For some, this might be alot, for me, it wasnt. I talk alot, as well as ask ALOT of questions. She was very, very informative. She gave me different opinions based off verbal, she emphasized that of course, it would be best to look at my skin. I agree, she wasnt trying to upscale anything. In fact, as I made my appointnent, she saved me almost 50% because I was getting 2 services instead of getting a long facial and a microdermabrasion. I arrived 15minutes prior to my schedule time, to look around, some places have paperwork, so I always like to arrive early. I was greeted at the front desk by Alejandro (Salon's owner), he seated me promptly, as they went to get Juanita. Usually, I'm offered water or coffee but not at this salon. Alejandro's demeanor was okay, Smile more Alejandro, you have a GREAT salon!! Juanita came a few minutes later, big smile n hip looking glasses. I can tell I'm going to like this place. She has a good persona over the phone as well as in person. I get in, she explains what will happen. She excuses herself, while I take my blouse off and put on a towel with velcro on it. I get on table. She knocks and asks if Im ready and proceeds to come in. I wont bore you with each step....but she did the facial, prepped my skin for the microderm and has the best hands to massage my face, neck and shoulders. Once she finished facial, she did the Microderm, she used the diamond tip, which is new for me. Im used to the crystal/vacum type. I will say that i like the feel of the crystals better BUT the dimond tip can be used up close under my eyes whereas the crystals you cant. Also, with crystals I would be all red after and would notice the skin softness a day later whereas with diamond tip, I looked and felt my skin look hydrated, even tone and it even looked like i had makeup on when I didnt, and it didnt look red. The finishing mask was the weird one. She handed me a wand and told me that the wand and her touching my face woukd transmit a small amount of frequency, well for me it was too much. I did not like the little shocks on my skin, as she massaged this mask on me.... she said for some it was good but not me. I dont know if it was my anxiety or what, but i felt my heart race so I told her to turn off the wand. She was very attentive when the wand was on, to see my comfort level, when I told her it was not comfortable, she immediately turned it off and kept massaging me. She then put on a moisturizer spf 25 and hydrated my horribly cracked lips. Juanita, I can see why you are very popular among Yelp users and I am happy I found you. I feel so comfortable with her that, after she comes back from her break, I will letting her do my brazilian wax. Obviously, she has a good reputation on this as well and based on my comfort level, I have made this decison of entrusting her to see me lol. A couple of months later I needed a haircut, but didn't have the energy to drive over to my cheapo joint. I remembered Connection and decide to give them a try. Alejandro really knows his stuff; I guess he worked for one of the high end mall salons. After the cut, I even got a few complements on my "new dew" which was a first. At least for a men's cut they are only a few bucks more that the discount joints. If you live in the neighborhood give them a try. This place is neat! I stumbled upon it while taking a walk in my neighborhood, and I'm glad that I did. Ambrocio is my favorite. When I made the appointment, he asked me to bring in a picture of how I wanted my hair cut. At the appointment, Ambrocio told me that it would take three haircuts for my hair to look like the model's in the magazine. Each time he cuts my hair, it looks better and better, plus; he is a very fun person to talk with! The only thing I wish is that the girl who does the mani-pedis could be a little bit happier. She seemed a bit sad (or bored?) when she was doing my nails. read more

So...I wasn't sure what to make of this place when I arrived. My Groupon/YouSwoop salon deals have been really hit or miss. I booked specifically with Alejandro since he was so well reviewed. First thing he does with my curly mop is to wash, blowdry, and flat iron my hair straight. Hmm....not too sure what he's doing here...he then proceeds to snip my locks w/ exact precision - something I didn't think I needed b/c, well, my hair is curly. While all of this is going on, Alejandro and I chat a little bit - he is so, so nice and friendly--totally unpretentious. After the cut, my hair looks great--but whose doesn't after a salon cut and blowout? However, in the following days after my cut, all washed out and curly, my hair freakin rocked! It is one of the best haircuts I have ever had in my LIFE. Alejandro was terrific. His prices are more than reasonable. I will definitely be returning! read more
