    Shoddy work
    Andrew R.

This review is for a tattoo I got with Matty. My brother passed away five years ago and I wanted to get a hamsa to commemorate his passing. I contacted Matty with an original custom design and said if he wanted to make minor changes to express himself that would be ok. We made an appointment for about two weeks out and several days before he asked me if I could come in earlier so he could squeeze someone else in last second after me. I told him I could come in an hour earlier if that would help and asked if he had finished the final design yet. He replied he really appreciated it and that he would finish the design as soon as he could. Two days before our appointment he sends a design with some changes and no color. I emailed back asking if it was possible to make a couple minor tweaks and wondering if the color would match the original design. He didn't reply before our appointment. During the tattoo he told me the day before he "didn't get out of bed all day" which was upsetting that he couldn't take the time to solidify the design. Halfway through I noticed he was free styling shading and patterns that weren't in either design kind of making it up as he went along. It seems wrong to not get consent before changing something that's going to be on my body for such a long time. Then he said it was done, but I noticed it wasn't filled in with color like the original design and he said that if he filled it in it would lose all the detail. What was strange about that is my brothers initials were already in an area filled in and he didn't seem concerned about losing those details. I told him I would like it filled in like the original design and he told me that the other patron was waiting. He suggested I could wait two weeks and decide then, but I told him I was pretty sure I wanted it filled in. He started getting angry and said fine he'll just fill it in. It didn't seem like a good idea to have an angry person give me a tattoo so I said I would come back in two weeks. He said he really appreciated me being flexible and that he wanted me to be happy with the tattoo. Several days before our follow up appointment I emailed to confirm and he didn't message me back. He seemed upset with me right from the start. My temperature was not taken like the last time and he also didn't shave my arm or wash it like he did the first time. I was going to say something, but honestly I was in shock. Also, he didn't have me sign any paperwork this time which combined with the other things seemed very unprofessional. Immediately I could tell he was just trying to get through it as fast as he could. He filled in a portion and then said if he filled it in all the way it would lose detail. I pointed out I could see my brother's initials and I that I wanted it filled in and he said fine if that's what you want. There was a noticeable change in the pressure and it seemed like he was drilling it in out of frustration. I asked him if he was upset with me and he didn't respond. There were other things I wanted done, but it was such a bad experience I just wanted to leave. Perhaps if you are wanting a design with little thought or detail you'll have an ok experience, but why would you want to support someone that treats people the way Matty treated me. There's a huge amount of trust that goes into letting someone tattoo you and Matty had no respect for that or my feelings. This tattoo was for my brother and is very meaningful for me and I regret that I went with Matty. The experience makes me never want to get a tattoo again.

After failing to hear back from several shops (sigh) I went to Art Work Rebels late on a Friday afternoon, solely on the basis of their good Yelp reviews and the fact that they'll take walk-ins, time permitting. The shop was quiet, clean and festooned with tattoo art - no unpleasant surprises, there. Jason was able to see me right away (I'm pretty sure it was Jason) and he did a great job with my simple little tatt (taken from a Jasper Fforde book, long story). I appreciated his explaining the minor tweaks he made to the design, and for gently pushing back when I (foolishly) tried to argue. Trust the guy with thousands of hours of experience ;) The ink has healed up without a hitch and it looks great. I'll definitely go back there for future work.

Love the shop and the people. The shop is very clean and well decorated for a tattoo shop. But that's not the reason it's getting 5 stars. My artist was Joe and I really enjoyed being tattooed by him. He's really nice and you for sure can't go wrong with having him tattoo you. His work is very clean and just amazing line work. Really enjoyed the piece he drew for me and it was exactly what I wanted. Very happy and overall a painful but good experience . The image isn't my full tattoo. I wasn't going to take off my pants to fully display it. But I wanted to add it to show the good work

If you're in the market for a gorgeous, unique and intensely detailed traditional tattoo, Gordon is your man. I spent weeks researching tattoo artists who specialize in the American traditional style, and Gordon kept coming up. He listened to what I wanted and tweaked the design until I was completely satisfied. On top of all that he was a fantastic conversationalist with a great taste in music. He even touched up another tattoo I got from a different shop! I've recommended him to anyone who will listen and I'll be sure to come back for more.

Stewart did an incredible job bringing my tattoo idea to life. The fine lines, shading, and artistic interpretation he captured from the initial image provided during our consultation surpassed expectations. This piece is very personal to me and I am blissfully in love with the final result; Stewart's care, stunning artistry, and deft hands made the experience and the design perfect. I highly recommend Stewart, and will be looking to book my next tattoo through him in the future.

We came here on referral for my daughter's first tattoo. We were looking for a place that did excellent work and would help us create a tattoo that was just right for my daughter. We met Joel and after five minutes of talking I was convinced we had found the right place. Joel took great care to listen to my daughter's ideas and suggested refinements to suit her. The tattoo is black and gray Lilly with the word "Believe" and some scrollwork. The detail and shading is amazing. The lettering and scrollwork beautiful. Joel and the rest of the folks at Art Work Rebels are true professionals, master craftsmen, and brilliant artists. They take great pride in their work, take great care of their customers, and stand behind everything they do. We could not be happier with the tattoo and our entire experience and we highly, highly recommend them!

Came in for a walk in today and had the best experience. Everyone was so welcoming and helpful. Josiah drew up exactly what I wanted the first time and gave some awesome suggestions. He was quick and they look amazing. I'm definitely coming back here for my next tattoo.

Rad fucking job. Jeff P. is the man and killed it on my Shintaro Kago tattoo. Highly recommend this shop for Japanese style tattoos, and I'm 99% sure the artists could kill it at any commission you have in mind.

Adam did an amazing job on my girlfriend's tattoo as well as on mine. Very polite team and terrific atmosphere. The price was fair too. Will be returning!

Sassy P.'s review nails it. Jason Kundel is a master of this art, and he has put together a great shop.

She didn't know at first but this was for my daughter, and it was the perfect art work to honor her that fit me perfectly. She also did a tribute tattoo on my other arm for my mom that was in perfect fine line that looks like it was hand written in one strike. She was easy to work with, really fun to talk to, and somehow made 4 hours fly by. I didn't think I'd want another tattoo for awhile but I'll definitely be back to Scapegoat to see Virginia soon. Thanks again!

Sarah listens closely to what you want and then finds a cute, stylish way to make it work. Her placement is precise, she has a firm yet gentle touch, and her use of color is fantastic (both color theory and saturation). I've never been hip and now I'm getting old, so I'm quite used to feeling anxiously out-of-place in tattoo shops, but Scapegoat is more approachable and welcoming than your average shop. They go out of their way to offer water, space heaters, heating pads, masks, or whatever else might make you feel most comfortable. The artists seem to support and treat each other kindly. The bathroom is a work of art. Everything is clean. It's easy to find unmetered parking a couple blocks away. And this is a vegan business to boot! I couldn't ask for more.

Conversation flowed easily and he had a killer music playlist going. Even his partner Hanam was a great guy and seemed vested in the quality of the work being done! Where he really shines, however, is his amazing attention to detail and the incredible quality of his art. I've had this tattoo planned for a long time and he seriously nailed it! Blew every expectation I had for it completely out of the water! Every small detail pops and the color and shading came out amazing! Seriously can't recommend this shop and Toby's artistic ability enough!!

Update: Toby and Nisha had their attorney send me a very aggressive and threatening letter in an…read moreattempt to bully me into removing my review. I made the terrible decision to be tattooed by Toby. I went in to start on a full sleeve, although it wasn't technically a full sleeve but a 3/4 sleeve. I have a tattoo on my upper arm that takes up half of my upper arm. During my 1st appointment we discussed that we are going to keep and incorporate that one. At my 1st appointment Toby told me that it would take 3 sessions since it wouldn't be an actual full sleeve. I paid for a full day session. He told me at my 1st appt that the stop time will be once I tap out. Our first session he ended early and said that his kids were sick. He specifically told me that our next session won't be the same. He also said our next session wouldn't take as long to get started. I went back in for my 2nd session yesterday at 10am. He showed up late like he did for our 1st appt. It wasn't until about 11am that he started drawing on me. It took him about 4 hours to draw on me. Keep in mind we haven't even started on my upper arm. He was drawing on my lower arm. Finally by 3pm we get started tattooing. The table wasn't working properly so he had to reset up a new one. Then some random person walks in looking for a tattoo. He stopped tattooing me to go chat with the person. Then throughout my entire session he purposely inflicts maximum pain. He seems to think that I don't have any large or decent pieces. I have my entire back done. I also have portraits and pieces on my legs. I have good quality work in those areas. I only mentioned to him that I wanted my back covered up, but because I don't like it anymore and don't have those beliefs anymore. It's not due to the quality. The tattoos that he was starting to cover on my arm are much older tattoos that I got when I was younger. Based off of that I suppose he thinks I don't know any better. My ex is also a tattoo artist so I understand needle groupings, heavy hands vs light hands, dry wipe vs wet wipe etc. Throughout my entire session he never finished a single area. He jumps from area to area throughout the entire process. He would randomly jump from my wrist, elbow, side of arm, just all over the place. He opens up the area and works on it for a while, then moves to another area for like 20min or so, then moves back to the area he opened up. He inflicts serious pain. I hinted to him several times that each time you do that it hurts much worse. He never listened and continued to do it. I told him from the start that I wanted to work in a particular area first. He didn't listen. He is super heavy handed intentionally. He dry wipes with a paper towel the whole time. He inflicts maximum pain to attempt to get you to tap early. At the very start of our 2nd session after the marker was drawn on, I flat out asked him will you be able to finish this today to which he yes. By about 10pm he said we should call it a night. I literally only had maybe 1/2 of a half sleeve. There was so much work to complete still. I told him no I want to keep going. He didn't want to but I was persistent. So we get back to tattooing. I asked him flat out why did you tell me that we would have this finished today if that isn't the case. He said well there are a lot of factors like the way a client takes pain. I told him he put me in a ton of pain but I never once stopped him so what do you mean. I told him I feel lied to, taken advantage of, and just how unhappy I was by this and that I won't be continuing with him. I was planning on getting 2 full sleeves, full chest piece, and a cover up on my entire back. I told him you literally told me that for a full day session that it means we stop once I tap out. He got extremely combative. He said that in the fine print says he only tattoos 7 hrs max. I said why did you lie to me then? He ended up calling me an asshole and threatened to stop my work mid session to leave it. He said it's his right to do so. I said that I'd leave a review about this and he said that's "thats fine, I don't give a f". I'm not sure if he ended up texting his family or people or what. But suddenly around midnight all his people showed up at the tattoo studio I guess to try to intimidate me. I paid $ 3,225 in total and I don't have a completed half sleeve. I don't even have a single section of my arm that is complete due to him jumping around constantly. Literally not even one single area of this "half sleeve" is completed. During our argument he scoffed at me and was the mentality of how dare you .. but he admitted flat out a full sleeve is 5 grand. I said okay and I've paid over 3 grand now and I don't even have a completed half sleeve. He refuses to take accountability. He is a very selfish mentality, a liar, and he will gaslight you the entire time. He pretends to be a nice person but he is absolutely not. He takes advantage of people and rips them off.
