Got a piece from Josiah while visiting my hometown. I was a walk-in on a Sunday afternoon. He looked at what I wanted, drew it up and did a great job. It was a simple piece, but his line work and fill were well done. He packs in the ink, but has a very nice touch. I will definitely get another from him during my next visit. Awesome shop. Was visisting from out of town and when I asked my local artist where to go to in PDX i was told to go to Jason's shop....happened to be AWR....based on my familiarity with AWR as an artist collective I was thrilled to check it out and get tatted. Could not have been a better experience. Beautiful shop, real cool dudes to hang out and BS with while getting drilled. I would never go get tatted anywhere without a solid referral so I will pass along the same. I have heard that there are other good shops in PDX but from my experience, AWR is about the best you are going to find anywhere so no need to look any further. Since the very first time I stepped into this shop I have been treated as if we've all been friends for years. But their friendliness is not there only quality, they also do some of the best work around! If you're checking a yelp review for a tattoo shop then chances are you probably haven't been tattooed much or at a high end shop like this one. Well, you're in luck because this shop won't let you get a shitty tattoo! These guys have been around for a long time and are highly respected by their peers so listen to what they say the next time you walk into the shop with a long list of ideas you have for your tattoo. They know what a good tattoo should look like and chances are you don't. Look through there books in the lobby to see what each artist has to offer and don't be afraid to ask questions. Just finished getting a tattoo from Joe at Art Work Rebels while visiting from San Francisco. The whole shop was clean and comfortable, and the staff was super friendly and welcoming. Joe was really professional from the beginning to the end, and really helpful. He gave me a lot of suggestions for slight alterations to both placement and the artwork that would help preserve the longevity of the tattoo, which was really appreciated. Getting the tattoo was a breeze, and I love it. I would go here again and again, and would highly recommend these guys! Good price, great work and friendly staff... why go anywhere else? read more

I'm currently in the healing phase of my latest from Ross at Art Work Rebels. I went in there with some ideas & Ross informed me that he just draw them right on me & go for it. Potentially a nerve wracking experience, but since he'd previously done something on me that exceeded expectations, I decided to not be a controlling weirdo about it. I have a number of so-so tattoos due to over trusting other artists, but once again, Ross delivered better results than I had pictured. Trusting him was absolutely the right move. These guys do this day in & day out...they have a better idea of what will make a good tattoo than you or I. So, if you're offered advice or it looks slightly different than you had originally pictured, trust that it's for good reason. While the prices here can run slightly more than some other shops around town, it's worth it to pay an extra few dollars to feel good about the experience. Rather than to walk away feeling only so-so about your new tattoo. Thank again to Ross, for the laughs & for doing such a fantastic job with what I gave you to work with! read more

absolutly terrible. i went in to get a tattoo done. they told me that they would have my tattoo drawn out for me and to come back in a week and a half. so i called ahead of time the day i was supposed to revisit to check it out. i arrive 2 min early just to find out my drawing wasnt even half way done. also, the guy didnt listen to half of the things i said and drew it with some of the opposite things i asked for. so i go in to get my tattoo done. the tattoo was a full back piece. the drawing looked fine. but 45min later (which is how long he spent on my WHOLE back and charged me $300 for less than an hr) the whole tattoo was messed up. the lines where wabbly and it looked like a beginner had done it. i dont know about anyone else, but if someone cant make a straight line or follow the trace, they arent worth doing your tattoo for $300 just to mess up your outline. read more

I crossed the line last week and got inked. I did a lot of research about shops and when I saw people who had cool tatts I asked they where they got theirs done. My wife did that when she got hers in Seattle and what better way to get info on shops than from customers, eh? Well, not only is AWO located near me on 23rd Street but it came highly recommended. I walked in and met with Ross, showing him what I wanted and to make an appointment. He said it was an easy one and said he could do it right then. I came back a week later, he remembered me, and less than an hour later I walked out with my first tatt. It wasn't anything elaborate but when you're doing something permanent you want to go to the best, right? Ross was the boss! He did a great job, he was great to talk to throughout and the time flew by. The shop minimum is $100 (which is what I paid, plus tip) which may be more than I would have paid elsewhere but it's worth it when we're talking permanence. Portland has a ton of tattoo shops and that means you're either good or your shut down. Well, AWO is not only good they're at the top of the food chain. You won't be disappointed. read more

Got my first tattoo here a week ago and cannot be more happy with it. Went in with a picture in my head of a peregrine falcon on my arm that would've probably turned out closer to a chicken nugget, but Jason took my idea and made something I couldn't have dreamed of. Four of my family members also got tattoos there at the same time and we are all more than satisfied. They are seriously knowledgeable, super friendly, and VERY reasonably priced for the talent they have. They also work very quickly. The following is a review from a tattoo newbie so take that for what it's worth. I'd been considering a tattoo for a long time, partly due to an agreement with my son from a decade ago that if he ever got a tattoo, I would, too. And partly because my daughter thinks that getting tattooed is about the most fun she's ever had, something I still have some doubts about.. So when the time came to move from thought to action I looked around my neighborhood and made several phone calls; Art Work Rebels was the only shop that actually had someone available to answer the phone, and had a couple of artists available that afternoon, so soon I was on my way. My initial thought was to get a small tattoo to test the process, see if I enjoyed it, test my tolerance for pain if there was any, and see how easily I healed. Ross Carlson worked out a small Japanese floral design, a very colorful design, that I liked, and before I knew it, it was on my shoulder. I found the process faster, less expensive and easier than I expected, and loved the results. Apparently my daughter and my friend who will remain nameless did as well, so within a week I was developing a plan to enlarge the design to include the entire deltoid. Once again Ross worked up a design, replicating the floral element and extending it in an Japanese design shoulder cap, This time it wasn't quite so fast and inexpensive, taking about four hours plus time to apply the stencils and do some hand drawing on my shoulder, but once again the result was awesome (in my opinion). Ross and Art Work Rebels gets my highest rating. read more
