That included calamari and two specials. (We were festive. I have forgotten.) For a main, I had pasta with pork. It was ample and filling. Daily specials cover all the bases. After you finish the muscles continue dipping the bread in the sauce. Food served hot not warm , what a concept. Arte is truly one of the best Italian restaurants in New York (that no one's talking about!!?!) The sophisticated yet cozy ambiance is a mixture of European charm and what you'd find at the fancy local Italian restaurant in your home town where everybody knows your name. The interior can best be described as classic New York Italian, complete with white tablecloths, red roses, and even a few frescoes depicting scenes along the Tuscan countryside. The outdoor seating has charming neighborhood vibes in the warmer months and looks like a European cafe. The staff is friendly, accommodating, and immediately stands out for their warm approach to service. Unlike a lot of restaurants in the area, no request is too big, and the Arte staff will go to great lengths to assure you are completely satisfied with your experience (eg, making off-menu meal requests as able, bringing out multiple wines to help you decide). As far as the food goes, well that's why we come at least twice a month - even while we're on a mission to try every restaurant below 14th st! At this point we've had almost everything on (and a few things off) the menu, and can confidently say we've never had a bad meal. The Melanza Barese is a deliciously refreshing take on eggplant rollatini. The Ravioli Porcini needs to go viral, it's actually illegal that it hasn't already. And a personal favorite entree is the off-menu Chicken Parmigiana alla Vodka, which is better than any meal we've had at the "hip" Italian restaurants in the village, not to mention all of the Major Food Group restaurants combined. We had a horrible experience here last week. After an hour when our entrees still hadn't arrived I was nuts! Complained and was told that in a fine dining restaurant it takes time! Never a hint of apology. Since I've eaten more than 50 times knew this was bullshit. I ended up leaving without eating. No one in my party of four supported me, though afterwards they said I was absolutely correct. Will never eat here again. I've lived in the neighborhood for over a decade and finally tried Arte last night. Here's the good-very pretty restaurant and bar and nice sidewalk seating. Servers are kind and somewhat attentive. The problem was the food. Beet salad was fine, nothing special. The veal and artichoke entree was not good, swimming in a heavy cream sauce, and weird texture, maybe from excess breading, which I didn't expect. Definitely not worth $36. No one checked in with us until the 1/2 finished entree was taken from the table and our bill was paid. I really wanted to like this restaurant. Conveniently located in union square area and not far from the train. I went for a work dinner but I'd also recommend it for a cute date spot. The ambiance was soft, quiet, & could be romantic. The service was great. If you're looking for an appetizer, I'd go for the calamari over the bruschetta. The salmon was TO DIE FOR!!! One of the best salmon fillets I've ever had. There was a dead roach laying under our table, as well as alive roach crawling on our table.... They gave us free limonchello drinks, trying to cover up that mess. The food is below mediocre, especially for this price. There is a sense of an old world, but not in a good way. It felt like I stepped into the restaurant from 1980s, the menu, the decor, the service. I love old school nyc restaurants and get that food may not be great and/or servers may be rude. But that can be fine since it's part of the experience. However arte does not get food or customer interaction right. The manager is very charming and then all charisma, kindness and attention stops once you get past the host stand. Truly a disappointment. I live only a 7 min walk away and I was hoping for the best. The ambience is warm and inviting. Unfortunately the food simply is at best erratic in quality. My veal was fine. My wife's eggplant she described as inedible. Our dinner companions (who are normally very uncritical) said that there was no reason to return to Arte. We arrived very early (6:30 PM) and the noise level allowed easy conversation. By the time we left at 9:00 PM the noise level was very loud. Simply too expensive for mediocre food and a menu that probably hasn't been updated in 30 years. A really boring list of desserts. read more

I haven't been too many Italian restaurants so I did not know what to expect or order to get the most Italian cuisine experience. I was here with my company so I did not get to select which starters to eat. But the ones which came out some of it was quite delicious. I like the mozzarella cheese, but the fried squid rings was kind of meh feeling to it. As if it was normal fast food junk. As for the main course I selected a fish dish, I actually asked which one was the most Italian and was told everything and then he said he would get me a Italian fish dish. Out it came out and my first impression on it was, isn't the portion size too small? I saw what my other coworkers had and thought i probably wrong. More on the fish, it did not gave me any wow feeling as I have had better fish before. And it was quite badly deboned, which is a bit minus. As for the dessert, I was going for the traditional tiramisu, but was kind of forced into another dessert. The dessert I got was some kind of chocolate mousse which had a frozen cookie on top of it. It was delicious but I don't think it was a typical Italian dessert though. So in overall the service was good, but the food lacks the thing which I would say wow too. If I would visit it again I would probably avoid pick a fish course again. read more

A total neighborhood gem in many ways and I would rank it higher if not for the weirdly inconsistent service for the high tabs. We stumbled onto this place after a doctor visit down the block. Despite living a few blocks away and passing by for years, I had no idea Arte existed. Don't you love New York! It has the same neighborhood, upper-middle-class, your-NYU-professor-invites-you-to-dinner feel as Volare on West 4th. Except it looks more modern and well-kept, as if they've had a recent renovation. The room is expansive and pretty, with little nooks and white-tablecloth tables set with a bottle of the house favorite wine (careful, those bottles are pricey). There's a fireplace that no doubt makes for cozy date nights in the winter. We ordered a couple of glasses of Montepulciano and bowls of pasta. I had the Paglie Fieno Calabrese (shrimp, broccoli, garlic & oil). Very tasty, but at $22, a dish that could easily cost $10 less--and does--at many downtown Italian joints. But, fine, it's an old-school Northern Italian fixture where you pay extra for the homeyness and comfort and waiters are trained to speak ceremonially with Italian accents. Charming. But after we declined dessert and asked for the check, our waiter, no doubt disappointed, went MIA for at least 20 minutes, which is odd because he was right across from us the whole time, chatting it up with other staff. If I'm paying $90 for 2 glasses of wine and 2 plates of pasta, the service had better be better than an NYU cafeteria. read more

I'm totally disappointed in their treatment of us tonight, two regular diners, for the last 25 years or so, from the neighborhood... The main problem was how the waiter reacted to an accident of red wine being spilled all over the table, a pasta dish and on my Comme des Garçons jodhpurs. My friend and I understand that accidents do happen. We don't intend to blame the guy for his mistake that resulted in the spilling of a glass of red wine. The rather unpleasant (to us, anyway) and dismissive response we got right after the spill is something I am extremely unhappy about. To add insult to injury, we felt misled about the "offer" of desserts and coffee made by a senior waiter/manager after the spill. Both my friend and I got a definite impression that the dessert and coffee were being offered to us in their effort to make the things right. Alas, when the check came, both these items were charged. We, consequently, left a tip based on the total check amount. I will add that they did give us extra wine after the accident, which we appreciated but didn't really need by then... Overall, I am saddened by the lack of apology right after the accident. It felt to us as though they were trying to make excuses. Instead of bringing fresh napkins to help me clean my pants and/or to cover a part of the table that was saturated with wine, they left us abandoned until the senior waiter came to our table to discuss what had happened. In addition, there was no offer of their paying for the "dry cleaning fee" for my pants... We still most likely will return, since it is such a nice neighborhood restaurant, offering great convenience to us locals. However, I am a little less enthusiastic about the place... read more

Had dinner here with friends prior to going to a play at a theater in Greenwich Village. We were there early for dinner and it wasn't crowded but filled up a little later. The service was good from the start and continued throughout the meal. I had the arte salad to start and it was good. For the entree, I had the branzino aromatico which was a grilled sea bass with a herb broth that was very good. The fish was moist and I really enjoyed it. I'd go back again. read more

My wife, our son and myself dined at a very nice, well staffed restaurant in the heart of Greenwich Village this past Sunday. Delightful dining room, with an accompanying Garden room towards the rear. The Garden room is beautiful and inviting. There are also tables on the walk in front of the restaurant to dine Al fresco. The staff was very attentive and quite social. The ambience and service were definitely above average. The owner Martino greeted us as we walked in. The staff, all dressed very professionally, were all smiles and very pleasant. The waiter explained the menu and elaborated on the "specials". He answered all of our questions and also made recommendations on what items to order based on our description of what we were hoping to eat. We started with a Caprese course which had great ripe tomatoes topped with a generous portion of some of the freshest Mozzarella that I ever tasted. We all split a classic Cesare salad next. The Cesare salad was good but there was a little more of the dressing on it that I cared for. The staff kept checking on us as we dined, something I always appreciate which demonstrates that they all were paying close attention to their patrons. The entrees were very good. My wife ordered Gnocchi in a vodka sauce. The Gnoochi were homemade, fluffy and tasty. The vodka sauce was light, not overpowering and great on the palate. My son and I both had Zuppe di Pesce with the freshest, homemade pasta that I haven't had in years. Mike's dish was traditional and my dish was made with a very tasty saffron sauce. Overall we enjoyed our dining experience. The attentive staff made us feel very welcomed which enhanced our dining experience. There are a ton of restaurants in NYC but we will be back at Arte soon.
