This store used to have everything I needed. Since the new owners have taken over they stock it with many different items I don't recognize. They aren't very friendly. All the good Japanese food I used to buy there when it was under the nicer owners is gone. No more wet Nori. Wrong Tonkatsu sauce. No persimmon soap. No black beans. I will never go back there again. Wow, it is a great thing that Yelp keeps suggesting these places for reviews because I could have sworn I reviewed Asahi before?? Anyways, it is a great local market that has a little bit of everything as far as Asian flavors and ingredients. I like it better than SeaFood City becuase it really seems that SC only focuses on Filipino cousine while Asahi offers varieties. The owners, which I haven't seen in a while were always polite and helpful and with their recent rearranging of things, they made the store easier to find things. Their prices are very competiive especially when it comes to basic things like soy sauce which I'm sure is very much appreciated by the community that patronizes them. I really hope this place stays around for a long time since I feel it really fills a need in our community. read more

Asahi Market is located in Downtown Oxnard on Oxnard Blvd & Seventh Street. They've been here forever. Ive been coming here for years, especially since it's close to where my parents live. If I don't feel like going to Island Pacific or if they don't have something I'm looking for in particular, I come here to Asahi Market to look for my Korean & Japanese needs. Mostly for sushi items like Nori. Bec there's so many different kinds. I like to make homemade hand rolls & sometimes sushi bake. So Seaweed Sheets & Seaweed Snacks, & Furikake seasonings are what I usually buy. Also they sell Masago here! Can't get enough of that stuff. There's a bunch of Noodles & Ramen here for you noodle heads. Different kinds of sauces. If you're lucky you can find desserts. Also lots of candy & snacks. It's a small store, so I'm in & out. read more

After the Korean couple sold the business, it's not the same. New owner doesn't know enough to help out or locate items. But the worst is the Rudeness. Now they are even charging service fees for credit card purchase. And of course they don't tell you up front about the surcharges. Will not accept personal check. Not going back there. The store has most everything I need as far as Asian store goes, but the man who runs the cash register has the worst attitude. Went to get some somen noodles. When he tried to scan the barcode, it wasn't registering so he tries to scan it again and and again, all the while banging the scanner on the package. He stopped just as I was about to say that he is crushing the noodles. I get it, it's frustrating that it wasn't working but the attitude and taking it out on something I was buying?! He kept sighing loudly and making faces and when he got everything rung up, he practically threw the change on the conveyor belt and leaned up against the counter. NEW OWNERSHIP I've visited this store on and off for the past decade, but the last time I was there, I noticed some new things - the building was recently painted, and the lay-out of the interior was different. Additionally, the man behind the counter wasn't Japanese. I'm used to this store being run by a sweet old Japanese couple, so this last change surprised me most. I commented on the new layout and the man behind the counter said that the store is under new ownership. I asked if the products were still going to all be Japanese. He assured me they were (more on that later). I asked him if they had natto. He said, "of course!" and pointed me to the freezer section. I had never bought natto before so I was skeptical about it being frozen. When I expressed wariness, he said it was perfectly okay because "that's how it arrives." That didn't make me feel comfortable - I only wanted to eat it for the health benefits of the good bacteria it contains. What it freezing killed it? He didn't seem to know anything about the bacteria or health benefits. He just kept assuring me that's how it arrives from overseas. I didn't feel like he actually knew anything detailed about the product. Anyway, my husband googled it and frozen natto is fine. The good bacteria isn't harmed by freezing. This store had a good selectin of natto, including some finely chopped, which is the one I'd recommend if you want to get some. The reason for 3 stars now and not more is my main worry is that this little Japanese-focused store that was historically run by a little old Japanese couple, might go the way of other such stores and just become an "Asian market" with many or most products from countries that I feel do not have the same high food safety standards that Japan does. So after he assured me that the products would all remain Japanese, I looked around and saw many many items that were absolutely not Japanese. Which just gave me a slimy feel about the proprietor. It felt like I was talking to a car salesman. Too eager to make me like him, too outgoing, but not actually truthful or knowledgeable about the business. This store has recently changed ownership- The owner also has Santa Cruz Market in Ventura Midtown. So he's experienced and has updated the store as mentioned in other reviews. Some Lebanese/ Middle Eastern items are sold in the back corner (which used to sell housewares, home goods) One thing I want to comment is on the items now available, newer items etc. They have really increased the amounts of sauces, condiments which are necessary for specific Asian dishes. This store is one of the few to have the Huong Foy (Green Rooster) Sriracha sauce. Stock up while still available. Edited update: Instant noodles-- They are boosting up on Buldak Fire noodles. You can always get individuals of these at 99 store to try flavors. They have Chapaghetti Jajangmyeon (black bean noodles). I did see Neoguri ramen Nongshim brand. and now I saw a variety of Sapporo Ichiban. I wish they would bring Bibigo for frozen dumpling and other items. They are the most popular Korean brand- also sold in Costco, Target and Winco. read more

I had jury duty in Ventura, had some time to kill, and found this Asian mart, which had more variety of Asian products than I imagined. What a surprise find! The owner told me this particular mart has been around for a 100yrs, which had first started by Japanese immigrants. The present Korean owners opened and worked since 30yrs ago. This place is kept organized, clean and quite sizable for two couple to be running a business. *Respects to the lovely owners! There were food items in the freezer and refrigerator, such as kimchi and veges, which I forgot to take photos of. I also forgot to take photos of the household items, such as various kitchenware, and utensils like chopsticks that were in the back shelves. So bummed this place isn't owned and run by the sweet old Japanese couple anymore. It made me want to patronize as much as possible. I went in surprised by the new layout and not seeing the usual owners in store. The cashier was nice, but another employee very obviously followed me around the store, which is very off-putting, rude, and never happened with the old owners. And the prices on the Asian items remaining in the store are now inflated from what they were. So bummed this little jewel is no more. :( read more

I've been going to this market for decades and they just recently changed ownership. I loved that this was a mom and pop shop ran by a sweet Asian couple! The inside has been completely revamped! New freezers and fridges. Better lighting. Even a conveyor belt checkout counter--whoa! There was a borderline obnoxious, young man greeting customers and proactively asking if they needed help with anything. The customers are old timers who were confused by the young man's presence and charisma. I overheard them asking him if the ownership has changed and asking who their new hot shot boss was lol The good news is all of the items I typically look for are still in stock. They even used the back section to expand to what appeared to be Persian groceries! After scanning my items, the young man didn't even bag them. Wtf! We stopped in at Asahi Market in order to pick up some Japanese cooking essentials, and were surprised to see two young men running the store, instead of the older Japanese couple. We learned that the store had recently changed hands, but the young men assured us that the selection of items in the store would remain or be expanded. We were pleasantly surprised to see some refreshing of the store. All of the ceiling lights were on, with new LED lamps replacing the old, flickering fluorescent tubes. In addition, a handful of brand new shopping carts made shopping pleasant. The two young men assured us that many other fixtures would be improved in the coming weeks. We found almost all of our essentials, except the one that we had mainly in mind. We'll find those at 99 Ranch in Van Nuys, 20+ miles in the other direction from our home in Thousand Oaks. When we do, we'll take the wrapper back to Asahi so they can order more for us. Also, there's currently a shortage of Rooster Sriracha sauce in the Southwest. Asahi Market had Lee Kum Kee Sriracha in stock, and assured us that they would be getting their weekly allocation of Rooster later in the week. Best of luck to the new owners and staff! read more

I bought some kimchi here, and when i got home to check it out it was very slimy. The first time i bought it here it was good. I asked if they could give me store credit or let me try another kimchi brand but the guy working there said there are no refunds, even if it's bad, because i opened it. I asked how am i supposed to know if its bad if i haven't opened it. Ended up buying some way better kimchi at whole foods. Terrible, the way that was handled, bad business. - also i put anything that needs to be refrigerated on ice as i transport it home so theres no way it was my fault it went bad. read more

East Asian market in downtown Oxnard with limited parking. Back in the day, the owners seemed to be more "protective" of their shop. But nowadays, they're pretty friendly. I can find a majority of snacks and drinks from my childhood here - pretty nostalgic. They sell limited frozen/fresh meat, lots of packaged ramen, plenty of sauces, snacks/candy, quick meal mixes like curry/miso, frozen foods like gyoza/bao, small selection of fresh produce, refridgerated drinks like ramune/teas/coffee, knickknacks for your kitchen asian muscle balms/patches + more. Also, ALWAYS check expiration dates before purchasing. I do this EVERYWHERE I go anyways and you should make it a habit too. Be sure to bring cash with you. Otherwise, make sure you purchase a minimum of $10 if you plan on using your debit or credit card. I like to go in the mornings - less traffic, available parking spaces, feels a bit safer. read more

My husband and I love the ambiance of Asahi Market in downtown Oxnard which recently went through a total transformation especially with the food items under the new ownership. Since I remembered the last time I went to Asahi, the items were not diverse. I asked the new owner about a few particular items and he found them without any issue. We do not need to drive all the way to LA or order online since they are right here at Asahi! We've shopped at Asahi for years and it's always been a reliable source for Asian, especially Japanese, products. We got our Tiger rice maker there, as well as countless bags of rice, bottles of cooking sauces, Japanese soup bowls, bags of rice crackers and bottles of sake. The owners were a Japanese couple who worked hard to keep the place up. As the years went by, the place became a bit worn looking. When the store was sold, we were concerned that the new owner might not get the Asian market vibe. Wow, was that ever a misplaced concern! Asahi now has a somewhat more diverse Asian focus, plus even more Japanese products than before. The store has been cleaned up and reorganized. It is still a reliable source of Japanese and other Asian food items, its prices are very competitive, and the new owners and staff are welcoming and helpful. A story with a good ending. read more

First time here and I spent SO much time perusing the aisles and checking out things that look yummy! First of all, it's in the hood so be careful and don't go at night or when you're looking cute. Don't let the area deter you, though. There's parking in the back, and once you're inside you're fine! Soooo many Asian grocery items here, many non-perishable and some produce as well. I do wish the fresh produce section was a bit larger. Pricing is a mix of high and low. The Asian pears were $3 each..ouch. But other items were priced very reasonable ie: a large bundle of bok choy for $1! I spent about $40 and got fresh veggies, noodles, curry pastes, sauces, snacks, oolong teas, etc. Service/assistance was a bit on the sparse side, but friendly enough.
