Cons: - the first round of tea was basically only hot water. The second pot that I requested did taste more like barley tea but I didn't care for the way there was so much grit in my pot. It's like the rejected tea bits from the bottom of the canister. - the rice was not japanese rice - my sashimi appetizer, which I asked for no tako/ika contained FOUR pieces of imitation crab meat, 2 shrimp, and four slices of sashimi. Granted, generous slices of sashimi but four pieces of imitation crab meat is a bit outrageous. Heck, just give me one piece and I'd just consider it to overcharging for 4 slices of fish. This way the restaurant seems seem lazy AND cheap. No one wants to eat four piece of imitation crab meat. I know it's supposed to be a sashimi plate, but if you think it's ok to have half the plate be NOT-sashimi, at least get creative and give me inari or tamago instead. This and Sakusa are the only places I've heard you can get sushi in Ft. Wayne. I've gotten takeout and have eaten here several times. I am not a big fan of rolls in general, so my husband and I tend to only order nigiri and sashimi, which always taste fresh and cut in nice, thick pieces. I had the unagi-don recently, and it was drenched in sauce; too much for me, so I'll just stick to fish in the future. Not the best sushi place ever, but not bad for the Ft. Amazing sushi! My favorites are the tokyo roll, texas roll, shrimp tempura roll and the Philadelphia roll. Their teriyaki is wonderful, my favorite is the chicken or the steak. If you go for lunch they offer fried rice selections that are also very good! At lunch they also have lunch boxes (or bento boxes) where you can choose two selections. Is and always will be the best sushi in Fort Wayne, no matter how many you try to build around it! I could easily recommend everything on the entire menu. My favorites are the Red Dragon, Aloha Roll, and the Mexican Roll. They serve sushi the way sushi should be served. Every other place in Fort Wayne seems to make them way too Americanized. If I wanted a "Double Cheeseburger Roll", I'd go to McDonalds. This is why I always come here... it's much more fresh and they appreciate the fish. The chicken or steak teriyaki is fantastic; best I can find. Even my very picky 4-year-old repeatedly brings up how good it was. It does take forever to get a seat, and at dinner time? Forget it. You're going to be waiting 45 minutes most of the time in a super-cramped waiting area. And they don't take reservations unless they're over 6, and even then, you all have to stand there and wait until everyone shows up at the same time. And you better hope all 7+ show up, otherwise you just added yourself another 45 minute wait because they will not honor the reservation for less! I always just skip the line and ask to sit at the sushi bar, where I salivate at the fish through the glass. SO GOOD. My favorite time to go is at lunch since I can get the same meals I love for half the price. Plus, when you get a roll for lunch, you get a yummy, fresh piece of tuna and kani on the side. YUM, YUM, YUM. The ambience is a quiet setting, and if you intend on being unruly with a large crowd, you don't want to come here. Anytime I've asked anyone in Fort Wayne for a good sushi place, Asakusa is the #1 recommended restaurant. I finally had the opportunity to visit Asakusa a month ago and was not disappointed in the least. It seems common here for many of the great restaurants to be tucked away in an ugly strip mall, and Asakusa is no different. Once you step inside, however, you're in an almost-modern, dim-lit, quiet restaurant that would have no problem fitting in perfectly in a trendy part of south Florida. I also love that you can actually sit in front of the sushi bar if you like (perfect for dining alone). When it comes to the food, I would find it hard to believe there's anything on the menu that isn't delicious. The edamame was perfect, as was my boyfriend's simple house salad (delicious ginger dressing!) and my Miso soup. We ordered off the special Maki menu and had the White Lightning Roll (fried tuna mixed w/ imitation crab in Texas sauce, fried shrimp and lightly seared super white tuna on top w/ teriyaki sauce) and the Honzu Maki (fried asparagus, smoked salmon, Texas sauce, wrapped in seaweed, sesame seeds) - both were exceptional. I'm knocking off a star for the service - our waitress was borderline rude in a very passive aggressive way - made a few faces at us, didn't explain that to order off the special maki menu you had to write down your order on the paper they give you and then was inpatient with me while I had to write down what we wanted in front of her... Unfortunately my review may reflect it was takeout and not eaten at the restaurant therefor the plates could not be prepared as well? The sashimi was good and tasted fresh although the colors were slightly pale. My appetizers were burnt and soggy but this is prob from sitting in a container. My soup was all broth with very little scallion, mushroom and veggies... Disappointed. Portions were on the small side and a tad pricey. Ginger squid was good. Overall there should be more pride and or presentation in take out orders. Other Japanese restaurants present the take out plates as if they were in the restaurant... Sushi?! Count me in!! At first I was afraid of trying this place because I had Asakusa off of Jefferson pointe before and it wasn't that great. However, my friends convinced me to try it at this location. I'm glad I did because it is delicious! They have other foods such as tempura shrimp, salmon, etc if you're not into sushi! I'm a fan of sushi from cooked to raw! I highly recommend getting the bonsai roll! It's probably the best roll they have there. I don't remember seeing any specials that they have except for the combination (sushi with two entrees). I'm usually there for dinner so I'm not sure what their lunch menu is like. The reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the rolls are filled with a lot of rice. Also, it falls off easily once you pick up the roll :(. Very disappointed in that BUT the deliciousness makes up for it. As for pricing, it is the typical sushi price ($10-12/roll)! Their special sushi is amazing. My friends and I got white lightning sushi rolls (each one is ten something, but you get a ton of sushi with it). For appetizers we got miso soup with their shrimp and vegetable tempura. I also got their ageidashi tofu appetizer, and I just melts in your mouth. Excellent authentic Japanese cuisine. The food is great - especially their Teriyaki chicken, which is served in generous portions. I nearly fell out of my cushion when the waitress arrived with my plate HEAPING with rice, chicken, and vegetables. Too much for one person. The sushi is also quite good, though I'm not really a sushi kind of guy. I believe that any fish not fully cooked should be swimming in an aquarium, not served on a plate, to be eaten. But Asakusa's "crispy sushi" - a deep fried fish roll stuffed with cream cheese and mushrooms - has converted me. After one bite you'll be saying "hai" to sushi. As for the restaurant, it's not much to look at from the outside - something you would easily overlook due to its location, nestled in a small and unremarkable strip mall across from a Home Depot shopping center. The kind of place you would expect to find a tanning salon rather than a sushi bar. But its looks are deceiving. Once inside you're set in a quiet, relaxed, Asian themed dining experience that is clean and cultural with an element of 70s thrown in. Space is somewhat limited but nothing overcrowded. There is a small overflow room that looks as though it began its life as storage room or broom closet - that is best avoided. Booth seating is recommended. On the downside prices are bit steep. If you're looking for Asian food at McDonald's Super-value meal prices, try the local rice bowl serving cat on its menu. You're going to pay a lot here, without question. If you're looking for something economical, and are new to Japanese cuisine, try the Bento meals (lunch boxes) which offer a good value and tasty introduction to tempura - batter fried meats and vegetables . The real gripe I have with this restaurant is wait time, which is appallingly long. Not a good place to spend your lunch hour unless you have flexible hours or a forgiving boss. After ordering your meal you can expect for wait twenty to thirty minutes for it to arrive at your table. By then you've devoured every appetizer on the table, including the napkins and petals from the banzai plant. But the food is definitely worth the wait and in such large portions that you won't go home hungry. Overall I rate Asakusa highly and recommend it to anyone with an appetite for Asian. It may look like a hole-in-the-wall, but the food is excellent. Just don't go there on an empty stomach or a lunch hour. read more

A friend and I decided to try out Asakusa being I've heard so many great things about his restraraunt from my son who loves sushi. We went there on a Saturday for lunch and were not disappointed. We were greeted in a nice friendly manner and our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. It is a place that has a dark, low light atmosphere and nice ambient music to relax. The booths to sit at are each sections off to give you that special one on one with the waiter/waitress that makes you feel special. The menu's consist of three different types 1). regular menu, 2) paper menu for those who just want to check off their orders right away and 3) a Sushi/Maki menu that shows pictures and describes each rolls for people like us that do not know what to order. We both ordered wine and water which came to us right away. then we ordered our lunch which was the Fire Dragon Roll, Tempera tuna roll and the Tuna Maguro (which comes 2 pieces at a time per order). I must say all were superb in taste but to be honest my favorite was the spicy dragon roll. The place was very clean and everyone was very nice and open to helping us non sushi people to what was great on the menu. I would definitely go back to enjoy more. I did notice a sign that they do have a happy hour during the week that is from 2:30-4pm which consists of discounted items. read more

I recently moved here and wanted to get sushi for my birthday. After asking coworkers and clients where to go, the general consensus was that Asakusa was the best sushi in town. My husband and I got there around 7:30, and we're pretty much the only people there, but it was a Tuesday night so I thought nothing of it. We had a hard time figuring out what to order, because they add hard boiled egg into all of our usual rolls, which we are not used to. We finally ordered, and when our rolls came out they were wrapped so loosely it was impossible to use chopsticks without them falling apart all over. The fish did not taste fresh (though we are from the coast, so I know we've been spoiled). Over all, we were very disappointed and frustrated, and only ended up eating about 1/3 of the sushi we ordered. Then came the bill - $60 for 3 bland, loosely packed rolls (that came with egg, even though we requested it be left off)! Needless to say, we'll be checking some of the other establishments around town. 2 stars because the waitress was a sweetheart. read more

It's really a 4.5 star rating... My fiancee and I eat here twice a month or so. If you're craving sushi/maki in a clean and relaxing atmosphere with nice visuals at the sushi bar; this is your place. Be sure to arrive early, like 5 pm or so on a Friday or Saturday because people have tuned-in to this place and they get BUSY!! Always a good sign that a restaurant is doing things the right way. I've been here on several dates with my girlfriend, and I only have one complaint -- there is no allergen menu. I have a minor allergy to gluten (it's weird, I can have soy sauce, but no bread products pretty much) and it makes it really difficult to order. Their sushi selection, although massive, only has one or two choices that don't have tempura something on it. It is rather annoying. Once we finally figure out what we want, though, the meal is delicious. I get the miso soup since the clear comes with tempura, and the ginger dressing on the salad was exceptional. I tend to get the Bento box with Teriyaki shrimp and chicken, which I find to be very pleasing. One warning: it is incredibly dark when you walk in, I think to maintain some semblance of privacy for the individual tables, but it is nice because it lowers the noise level significantly. read more

I'm pretty picky about my sushi as my room mates mother is Japanese and I've experienced some very excellent fare. The miso soup here is the most flavorful I've had anywhere (other than my Baba Tokiko's kitchen) and I would go here just for that on a cold day. The sushi menu is extensive although most of their maki rolls have imitation crab meat in them and a majority of them are cooked or tempura (fried). The sashimi is fresh and tasty. The staff is always friendly and gives you a choice of seating if possible. It's a great place to go with a group of friends, by yourself for lunch ($8 lunch specials include miso, house salad, maki, and sashimi), or for business lunches. read more

Good sushi. I've also enjoyed their lunchbox meals. Someone else mentioned their miso soup. It is very flavorful and delicious. I'd never had deep-fried sushi before. It isn't something I would order every time, but the roll I got was good enough that I would certainly get it again when I am in the mood. Almost like having a bite of crab rangoon with a bite of maki roll. Suprising atomosphere. Had not expected some place this soothing in a strip mall! Dim lighting and the way the tables are arranged with dividers through the rooms give a feeling of privacy, even though the next table is actually pretty close to you. Not exactly a kid place, but we have taken our 1 year old son (who is in a quiet, stare at everything phase that is perfect for going out - gotta take advantage of that while it lasts!). I haven't tried any other Sushi in Fort Wayne, and admittedly, my expectations were not high. I thought Askausa was delightful and the on the whole the food was delicious. My husband and I shared a couple of rolls (both were excellent), tempura (also very good), and the chicken katsu. When he tasted the chicken, my husband blurted out, "This chicken taste's like Burger King!" And, you know what? It did taste like Burger King. It wasn't bad, just not what we were expecting. Overall, the decor is lovely, the service was great, and the sushi is good. I do agree with others about getting there early. We went on a Sunday night and there was a short wait. I imagine it's much worse on Friday and Saturday. Also, I do think it's a bit pricey, but decent sushi in Indiana always is. read more

I never thought I would come to like the sushi rolls here so much, especially the Tokyo Roll. It's HUGE! After having tried a handful of places in Bloomington, IN and Philly, PA, Asakusa Really has something no other sushi roll restaurant has. We usually get two Tokyo Rolls, an Aloha Roll, and a dargon roll between 2 to 3 people. We get great service and a lot of food every time we go. Cannot go wrong by ordering the rolls. read more

I travel a lot and have eaten sushi all over the US and I still find it hard to believe that Ft Wayne has one of the best sushi restaurants,for the price, that I have ever found. My usual order is a Bonsai roll and a Wasabi Maki. The rolls are large and really delicious. The clear soup is excellent. It has a fish base but tastes like bacon. My kids refer to it as bacon soup. I have ordered the sashimi and nigiri and both are very good. For the non sushi eaters I have tasted the teriyaki chicken and found it quite good. read more

Really good food. The sushi is all I have eaten here, along with a few appetizers bought for an event I was at. The sushi was prepared fresh, and the chefs were friendly and accomodating. The portions are enormous, especially for sushi. I usually need 2 rolls to feel full, but 1 of the more expensive rolls is more than enough for a 220 pound 6'2" man. Incredible variety and really beautiful presentations. The only downside here is the wait times. The dining room and bar are tiny, and seating is an issue. Every time we go it's a 30 plus minute wait at least, with no room to stand. I expect the summer to huge groups of people waiting outside. People frequently are forced to wait well inside the dining room during inclimate weather. read more

The best place to get sushi in Fort Wayne (okay, I'm a bit biased because it's only place I've ever gone to for Sushi in FW). Anyways, the sushi is on point. I always get the Aloha roll, the Aka Ohi roll, the classic California roll, or occasionally the Dragon Roll. The Aka Oni is my favorite. They lightly fry it so it has a crispy, crunchy exterior. The Aloha is good, too, because they put a sweet sauce on the roll. And a small salad with ginger sauce and clear miso soup are standard with your meal. Prices are reasonable. Decor is meh/dark. This has been our "go-to" Japanese restaurant since we moved here in 2008. I had eaten here for years when I come to Fort Wayne on business and was delighted that such a high-quality sushi bar was here. I have eaten here with Asian friends and co-workers and all of them agreed that it was very good. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with any of their sushi and I am also very partial to their Tempura dishes. Took 15 minutes for soup, another 15 minutes for salad, and another 10 after that for the sushi. If you are not in a rush, this is still a great place and the sushi is melt in your mouth good.
