Even though it was a bit chilly outside today we were determined to cultivate our own version of "patio weather." Mostly because we brought our dog--but hey at least we had the entire outside section to ourselves! The five stars are for the yummy food, consistently delicious ciders and the outstanding service! Zoe was patient and accommodating with my requests for samples of all the new ciders or ones I hadn't yet tried yet: Horchata, Pomegranate Soda, Passionfruit Coconut and Patio Rush. She even brought out a mix of Milk Bones for our fur baby so he could perform his best tricks. In all seriousness, the cider braised chicken I added to the Orchard Salad was so tender, juicy and bursting with flavor. My husband said the hot sauce he asked for in the side MAKES the Fried Chicken sandwich. We both enjoyed the tomato basil soup especially because it has a good amount of gooey cheese and lots of flavors & seasoning. I am always a fan of Ash & Elm Cider and was happy to have the Crisp Peach today for a change! I regret not trying the Imperial Bourbon Cider but I guess I was going for more of a floral, fruity and citrusy palate. Next time, I DO want to sample the Imperial Bourbon Cider with added brown sugar, fermented and aged in West Fork Whiskey oak barrels. It's apparently Boozy, vanilla and with bourbon notes! We have done lunch and Sunday brunch. On Sunday we had a larger group that was back to back with another group that kept growing. Our server was busy, running back-and-forth between the two large groups, but she managed to give us great attention. Every dish we ordered was served hot and fresh. Ash & Elm is one of those places I am glad exists in Carmel. Feels geared toward the younger crowd, kinda like a Books and Brew vibe. With the apartments nearby, I have a hard time imagining it will struggle to stay busy, and overall it adds something good to the area. The food has been good when I have gone, and the atmosphere makes it feel like a place with solid potential to become a regular spot for a lot of people, especially with trivia and other events happening there. My only real hesitation is that service has not been especially strong in the couple of visits I have had--servers were kind, but there were a few too many moments where follow-up got missed after food was dropped off or a drink sat empty. That may just have been bad luck, because overall it has still been a nice experience and seems like a place that will be a great fit for plenty of people. read more

We finally had the chance to check out Ash & Elm in Carmel, IN -- and honestly, it was pretty mid. I've always loved their ciders, but the dine-in experience fell short. It felt like we were forgotten about shortly after sitting down, likely because there was an event happening in the back. I ordered the Fish & Chips, keeping things soft since I just had my wisdom teeth out, but for $21 I expected something a bit less greasy and more satisfying. My husband had the Mediterranean Bowl and said it was good, but definitely something we could've made at home. Overall, I'll always be a fan of their cider, but probably won't return to the in-person locations -- the food just doesn't feel worth the price. If you live on the Northside and have been lamenting the drive to Ash & Elm in Indy, your prayers have been answered! The new location in Carmel is just as wonderful as the original restaurant. All the same cider options, plus wonderful flights not just of ciders but of mimosas and Bellinis. And the food options are varied and delicious. We sampled across the menu, and no one was disappointed. Oh, and just this location and not to be missed: cheese curds! And a shout out, too, to the incredible staff. The server overheard me say I wasn't the biggest fan of ciders, and he colluded with the bartender to bring me 3 cider samples he thought I might like. And he was right! They are delicious! I'm a little torn on this one. I absolutely love their cider and our server was super nice and helpful, but I just wasn't crazy about the food. I got the cider brined chicken and thought it was just okay. I preferred it drowned in the dipping sauce. We also ordered French toast sticks with pumpkin dip, but the sticks were still a little doughy on the inside. Our server was super apologetic and took the French toast sticks off our bill, which was great. I'm just not sure I'd recommend this place on the food or ambience alone. My husband and I met my sister and BIL here for lunch a couple weekends ago. The host was funny and personable, but our server... not so much. I'm not sure if he was new to the job or just maybe isn't extroverted enough to be a server, but he was not very friendly and hardly checked on us, despite us being seated right by the bar. He also only served 2/4 drink orders and then left to go assist people that had just walked in with their drinks before coming back nearly 10 minutes later to give the other 2 their drink order. We ordered our food and he did not come back to check on us until halfway through eating. No one cleared any empty plates or cider flights from our table during our visit besides my husband's cider flight, while he was still drinking from it. At the end of our meal we had no drinks and no water and our server came over to see if we wanted anything else after we had sat around for a while. We decided to just leave and go somewhere else because the service sucked so bad. We said we didn't want anything else and he responded "so you guys are just hanging out here?" No?? We need to pay our bill and leave. It was just really odd. Seems like a great space and would have loved to stay for another drink, but our server made the trip to this location unpleasant. This is a cute little tap house. There's a lot of different seating options, but it is small over all. The service was a bit slow at first, but then it got better and the bartenders were great! The bartenders were bringing drinks to people at tables so that slowed them down a bit. The food looked amazing, but we just got apps. The pretzels were standard, and the cheese curds were so good, but some were overcooked and empty shells and it was a bit of a greasy mess. The ciders were all great! This was really my first cider experience and it did not disappoint. Jordan took care of me and my friends from the moment we stepped in. Greeted us very kindly, quickly got us seated, and gave great recommendations. We ended up trying the flights. The seasonal flight is an absolute must if you love Fall. Well let's forget about the fact that this place is recognized by the National Celiac Assoc'n of America... the food is just plain great! We had GF fish and chips and the Fried Chicken Sandwich. Both were outstanding. I got 2 huge chunks of battered cod with homemade tartar sauce. And the gf toast for the chicken sandwich was wonderfully soft. Our one disappointment was that our fries (gf fryer) came cold. To their credit, the staff apologized and brought out a huge bowl of hot ones! Popped in for lunch during the weekday, and I didn't get any cider. I immediately regretted my cider-abstaining decision when I saw that one of the special ciders on the menu this month is chili guava. What! I've never had chili guava cider, but it sounds amazing and now I'm going to have to come back soon to try it before it's gone. What I did get was a small Caesar salad and a kids' cheeseburger. The Caesar was tasty and the ingredients -- romaine lettuce, dressing, parmesan, croutons-- were well distributed. The kids' cheeseburger was what you'd expect: quite dry and plain. Oh well. That's my fault for ordering off the kids' menu, I guess. The cheeseburger comes with fries, which were also good. We also got the beef stew -- the soup of the day. Get that if they offer it! It's hearty and warm and satisfying. We also got the shepherd's pie, which I think was a special of the day, so they might not always offer it. It was the cutest lil' thing: all hot and mashed-potato-topped in a miniature cast iron skillet. The server seemed like he was doing his best, but he was the only one there. He was busy doing everything, so we had to wait a bit. I would say to mark off a full hour for lunch, at least. The restaurant itself is bright and full of natural light. It was fun to try several ciders in one seating. 3/6 of us got the seasonal flight, which they all enjoyed. I had the regular, which was very good. One at our table had the blood red cider which was excellent and the last one in our group created a custom flight. I'd go for the cider alone. Food was okay - will not be the draw next time. Braised chicken sandwich was more like pulled pork, I just wasn't expecting that style - 6/10. My husband got the steak sandwich and rated it about a 6/10. Cheese curd appy was beer battered. I have been to ash and elm a few years ago downtown and kept meaning to check them out now that they are closer. We came here on a Sunday afternoon and sat immediately (although you can also make reservations for potentially busier times on open table) we sat inside but there is a huge patio that looks like it would be nice and fun to enjoy in warm weather! Henry was our server and he was super friendly and able to provide great recommendations. He told us you are allowed to try 2, 1 oz samples for free so tried the sauv blanc cider (made with Daniel's vineyard wine) and fleeting youth. Both good but sauv blanc wine too try for me- might actually be better as a cidermosa! Fleeting youth was decent but a little too much lemon for me. I ended up making my own flight and liked each one. Sunset (year round flavor) is something I've had before and still enjoyed. Also tried purple pride, blueberry, and a blackberry one. All enjoyable! My favorite ended up being something my husband order, Del Camino. The pineapple notes went perfect with the burger of the month that I ordered- 2 patties with cheese, tomato, jalapeño, grilled pineapple, and side of fries. Fries were basic but extra flavor with the garlic aioli. I would get this whole meal again!! Burger was juicy with good flavor and I liked the combo of sweet and spicy toppings but unfortunately it was only for the month of June. We also did get a side of chips and salsa- very basic and fine, but salsa reminds me of what you can buy at a grocery store so I would opt for a different appetizer next time. Fish & Chips were ok, the fish had a nice batter. Smash burger was also pretty good, with GF bread that had been buttered and well toasted on the griddle so it didn't fall apart. The fries are where things fell apart. You gotta nail French fries. These were subpar, badly cooked and tasted stale. Our service was also confusing as we sat down, were seen pretty quickly, then waited 5-ever for our server to return. The bar tender ended up helping us after we went looking for help and placed our own order in the Toast app. Drink refills were slow but once we found someone to take that order too, they came pretty quickly. It's a nice clean and modern vibe in the restaurant. No sound absorption anywhere so it was a bit hard to carry out conversation at times. TL;DR: Probably fine if you're here for the cider and maybe some appetizers. I wont be back for a full meal. Ambiance: Fine but a little loud even on a half full day. Décor is clean and on the lore basic side. Food: Elote fritters and pretzel were good but that's about the only food items that we liked. Got the burger of the moment (BBQ burger) and the bulgogi bowl as entrees and both were significantly underwhelming. For the burger, bun was burnt, pulled pork was on the soggy side, had very little BBQ sauce, and overall it was just lacking any significant flavor. Got fries on the side, which were cooked well but were over salted. Somehow the bulgogi bowl was even more of a letdown with the biggest problem being the meat which definitely didn't have a bulgogi flavor, but instead just generically tasted of salt (and I don't mean a little too salty, I mean completely ruined the entire dish too salty). Service: Server was nice enough, but wasn't great as a server. Dropped off the cider flight without explaining which cider is which (a card was included, but no indication of which direction it started from) and didn't get the burger order correct. Overall: If we hadn't been so hungry, both entrees would have gone back immediately. As it happened we stopped eating them halfway through anyway. Amazing location underneath new apartments in downtown Carmel and tucked off the interstate. Parking is pretty easy and there's plenty on the backside. They have a huge bar set up and plenty of other seating. The ambiance is about as simple as it gets - it felt plain and not unique or super branded. The service though was amazing and our waitress was SO nice and friendly - we already said we'd return and be back at the bar to chat with her. Seems like a lot of residents above pop in for dinner and drinks so it's a spot for regulars. I didn't have any food but it looks good. I had wine and it was good - it's from a can. We took a jaunt up the Monon Trail on Saturday and our halfway point was Ash & Elm, which was a nice oasis on a warm day in Indiana. While I've visited this location to purchase some gifts around the holidays, but haven't had a chance to sit down and enjoy their delicious ciders and eats. We sat inside this time, but their outside seating appeared to be lively, and we may give that a go the next time we're by. I've had many of Ash & Elm's ciders thus far, but on this trip, I ordered their Earl-Grey Orange Blossom, which was outstanding. We also sampled their Purple Pride, a special cider to celebrate Pride Month, and it was equally amazing. As for eats, we ordered up the Maple Glazed Brussels Sprouts and the cheese curd appetizers and then split the cider-braised chicken. This was just the right combo to provide the extra energy we needed to get back to the car. It's so great to have two locations to choose from for our local cider needs. We've been to Ash & Elm several times because we really like their ciders and have typically had good service. NOT THE CASE today. Our server, Jordan, ignored us when we needed anything as he was too busy making snarky rude comments to other people. He told another guy working there that nobody liked him and he should just leave because we can do our job fine without you. Wow... do I as a customer need to see or hear this? How can management allow this type of behavior? We did say something to the guy he said this too and asked if he's always like that? He just shook his head yes and didn't seem to really want to say anything at all. He apologized to us for over hearing the comments. Why should this person apologize for Jordan's bad behavior? Why would management allow this to continue. Jordan should be thankful he doesn't work for me as that would happen ONCE and wouldn't happen again because he wouldn't be working for me any more. This just killed the awesome vibe for us. We have loved just going in after work or on an off day and having a few ciders at the bar. Love the atmosphere but this just kind of killed it for us knowing that management allows employees to treat others like this. I would have asked for some, but it wasn't worth the wait. At one point we were all scraping salt off of someone's too salty fries to put on our food lol. I did not personally have the cider, but it was said to be really good, which makes sense given the name! The food was in no way bland, just felt like it lacked the same TLC given to the alcohol. The entrance was a little weird? We weren't sure if we were going the right way at first. There was also a ton of broken class from a different building you have to walk by to get from the parking lot to the building. It was giving millennial on the inside (not in a bad way). The one thing is that it is a big open room, so sound travels really well. We could hear a party going on over the entirety of our meal, so we tried to get out of there rather quickly. We came here after graduation, and I would lie if I said I didn't leave a little disappointed. I had a hard time trying to rate this restaurant. We got a flight of ciders AND a cider slushie! So fun! I love their Autumntide cider - it's perfect for fall & pumpkin lovers. Regular seating allows for under 21. I'm hoping when they open their patio that it will be dog friendly as well. The food looked and smelled amazing and we will definitely allow ourselves time for a meal next time. We were just so excited to come here as we absolutely love their cider! HOWEVER, we were severely disappointed. The service was genuinely terrible. There was a sign that said seat yourself, so we did, and no one helped us for over 15 minutes while others were being helped multiple times (there were only about 4 tables occupied when we got here). They finally came up to us and didn't even introduce themselves or anything. We ordered an appetizer & a flight and she said while we waited she'd grab us water (25 min at this point). She also had no idea what the specials or seasonal ciders were (keep in mind this is a CIDERY). We received our app fast, but still had no water or silverware. By the time we were done with our appetizer, it had been 40 minutes and we still had no water after asking multiple times. Finally when we finished that's when we got silverware. Also, the expo bringing out our food had no idea what was going on and literally went up to every table asking if our food was for them and if they had ordered it. He was walking around aimlessly with our food forever. When we finally got to order our main meal, I asked questions about how big the salad sizes were and if it was gluten free with the chicken that I wanted on it. She answered my questions and then told me I got a side with that salad. I was confused, bc on the menu, it didn't say I got a side. So I clarified and asked if the SALAD for sure came with a side. She said yes, so I ordered tots, and my friend said, "I want the exact same thing." 30 minutes later, my friend got a salad with no tots and I got a sandwhich. She looked VERY confused when I said I received the wrong thing and then told me she accidentally grabbed the wrong food but there was no one else out here ordering. Then my friend asked where her tots were and she said salads don't come with tots and she could add them on for an additional price. Taylor was a great bartender. As a first time attendee, really enjoyed the variety of cider on tap. My partner and I popped in when their limited Mother's Day collection was in stock. We both enjoyed the build your own flight. We loved the Juniper Rose and Black Cherry Vanilla ciders. The brussels sprouts were fantastic and an incredible portion size. Horrific first impression. We walked in with 5 people because open table said they had 4 tops available every 15min for the next 2 hours which indicates they aren't full. The restaurant when we arrived confirmed this with maybe 25% seated. We told them we didn't have a reservation and they looked at us like we had 3 heads. She even went to a manager to come back and lie to me and say we couldn't get in without a reservation. This place is a woke joke. Go somewhere that wants your business. read more
