I really wanted to like Ash & Elm. Unfortunately, it was the last day of Devour, and they were out of a lot of things, and many of the things we had were poorly prepared and overly salted. The house salad was excellent, fresh greens, and a very tasty dressing. From there, things went downhill. The fish and chips had one small piece of fish that was massively overcooked, with both fish and fries tasting like someone had dumped a full shaker of salt on them. They also tasted like the oil was old. The Smash Burger was extremely salty as well, and the meat was poor quality. We had wanted the cheesecake and the cider doughnuts. They were out of the cheesecake, and only had one order of the cider doughnuts left. The doughnuts were so overcooked, we could barely cut into them. We were told they are always that way. They were honestly like rocks (see picture.) The brownie was fine, nothing special. I could not even eat the fish it was so bad, The guys picked the breading off, and ate a few bites of the fish. We were unable to eat the doughnuts, for fear of breaking a tooth. They took 50% off one order of the fish. The bill was still $140 for 4 with tip. It was the most disappointing meal I have ever had during Devour. read more

We gave Ash & Elm a second chance after a so-so experience during Devour, where we expected delays but still felt a bit unwelcome. The first time, a server said how he wasn't going to serve just two people, not sure if he knew we heard that or not... unfortunately, after the second visit, we won't be returning. We sat at the bar again and were initially greeted and got our drinks quickly. However, as time went on, the bar manager kept disappearing for 10+ minutes at a time while customers waited. We struggled just to get a refill, let alone order food. When we were ready to ask for our check, she finally reappeared--only to disappear again to check what the new burger of the month was. Meanwhile, a couple who sat down after us waited so long that they listed everything they wanted at once, unsure when she'd return. They weren't rude, but she told them they were and asked them to leave, making the whole atmosphere tense. After waiting 1 hour and 45 minutes, our food finally arrived--and mine was wrong. At that point, I just asked for a box so we could leave. Meanwhile, people who sat down after us were already eating. I didn't want to spend over two hours waiting for a simple burger and cider. We understand staffing shortages and are sympathetic, but disappearing for long stretches, leaving customers unattended, and not even checking in isn't acceptable. Seeing other reviews mentioning the same issues months ago makes it clear that nothing is improving. Maybe a second location isn't a great idea if staffing is an ongoing problem. And calling customers "rude" for trying to get their order in after waiting forever? That's just bad hospitality. Lived in Indy for 12 years now, this has been the worst service experience in any restaurant in the Indianapolis area. If you want good ciders still, I highly recommend going to the liquor store, get some Ash & Elm and some Steak n Shake burgers and you're going to have much better service and cheaper experience altogether. read more

Sitting at the bar, I had an amazing experience with Jordan and Brandy. Literally amazing. I was able to try the different options of ciders on tap. Also, it's a very intimate space, where it's not too many people & I'm able to have a more personalized experience. Have yet to try the food dining in, so I'll do that next time. I had gotten an Instagram ad for this restraint as they just opened a new location in Carmel. Since I was in town, we decided to stop by. The place is cute and vibey with lots of windows to let in a lot of natural light. I see they also have a patio for outdoor seating but it doesn't look like it's open to the public yet. We ordered a custom flight with different ciders to share, and this was good! We really enjoyed the pumpkin flavored cider. I ordered the braised chicken sandwich and this was also pretty decent. The chicken was super soft and flavorful, but the bread wasn't as tasty. The fries were okay. I do think that they have some other tasty sounding things on the menu so I might come back and try different entrees! read more

Well, in Carmel for a girls trip we found Ash and Elm cider. There is so much to like about this place that we came back the next day. I have celiac disease which requires me to be 100% gluten-free. I had the fried chicken sandwich and my friend had the gluten-free fish and chips. For my fellow GF people they have a dedicated Fryer. Both of those meals were spot on, full of flavor no weird gluten-free aftertaste. We also had the spinach, artichoke dip and the crème brûlée. Everything was incredible. read more

We were just so excited to come here as we absolutely love their cider! HOWEVER, we were severely disappointed. The service was genuinely terrible. There was a sign that said seat yourself, so we did, and no one helped us for over 15 minutes while others were being helped multiple times (there were only about 4 tables occupied when we got here). They finally came up to us and didn't even introduce themselves or anything. We ordered an appetizer & a flight and she said while we waited she'd grab us water (25 min at this point). She also had no idea what the specials or seasonal ciders were (keep in mind this is a CIDERY). We received our app fast, but still had no water or silverware. By the time we were done with our appetizer, it had been 40 minutes and we still had no water after asking multiple times. Finally when we finished that's when we got silverware. Also, the expo bringing out our food had no idea what was going on and literally went up to every table asking if our food was for them and if they had ordered it. He was walking around aimlessly with our food forever. When we finally got to order our main meal, I asked questions about how big the salad sizes were and if it was gluten free with the chicken that I wanted on it. She answered my questions and then told me I got a side with that salad. I was confused, bc on the menu, it didn't say I got a side. So I clarified and asked if the SALAD for sure came with a side. She said yes, so I ordered tots, and my friend said, "I want the exact same thing." 30 minutes later, my friend got a salad with no tots and I got a sandwhich. She looked VERY confused when I said I received the wrong thing and then told me she accidentally grabbed the wrong food but there was no one else out here ordering. Then my friend asked where her tots were and she said salads don't come with tots and she could add them on for an additional price. Also, they didn't check on us once the entire time about refills, how our food was, or anything. Now my stomach hurts so bad. Not worth it all. Was $35 per person for this. Insane. read more

This was the worst food I have had in a restaurant in years. The only good thing was the cider! I was Leary when we walked in and it was so empty. Then the host sat us in the worst table by the kitchen in and empty restaurant. We asked to be moved outside and it took him 3-4 minutes to make it happen in a mostly empty patio. We had the pretzel appetizer which was fine but seemed like something out of a box. We ordered a smash burger and a southwest bowl. The bun on the burger as giant, way bigger than the burger and was hard. Like it was grilled and then sat out for an hour. The southwest bowl was so bland and the salsa was defiantly old El Paso or something equally gross from a grocery. So very disappointing. read more

I'm going to start off by saying that I absolutely love the cider products out by Ash and Elm. Their cider of the month is always something fun and new. With that being said, this particular location felt a little bit like an after thought. The staff were incredibly friendly, the food was on par with what I would expect... but the staffing seemed a bit light given it was a Friday night and Devour Indy is in full swing. The staff that was working seemed a bit disjointed and were lacking in the confidence you would expect from someone well trained in a well laid out establishment. We sat down at the bar and it was 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged we were there. Two bartenders serving pours for all of the restaurant as well as 15 bar seats, and approximately 8 of their own tables seems like a bit much, even if it's just cider pours. I'm hoping this was just an off night or a last minute staff issue, but nearly two hours for two people to have an app, main, and dessert off of a prefix menu is excessive. Again, the staff understood that the delay was unreasonable and remained as positive as possible, but it definitely didn't feel like they'd been set up for success that night. read more

Tried this for the first time and really enjoyed it. We had one of the cider flights and it had a nice variety of types and flavors that we really enjoyed trying. We had a few different appetizers including the fritters and cheese curds which were delicious. We will definitely be back to try some of the other seasonal ciders. Meat locker temperature. Ten minutes for our server to greet us. He started work at 6pm instead of being READY for diners at 6pm. Thought they were out of one of the ciders for a flight we all wanted to try. Wasn't sure though. Didn't know the ciders on the flights and the menus didn't bother to list them. Had to remind him about our appetizer. Which actually tasted good. Cider cheese and chips. Then, no mustard was delivered with the two dinners for whom it was either requested or was listed on the menu. The southwest bowl was ok. Had a weird orange stain on the rice. Salsa tasted like Pace or another jarred salsa. The hamburger was ok. But by the time the mustard came it was cold. Ambiance was sorely lacking. Chairs are cheap plastic. No printed menus. Unfortunately, we had a very poor experience here tonight. Our family of 8 dined here. Anytime we needed something, we had to flag our waiter down. Not once did he come over and check on us, offer to refill waters, or make sure we had what we needed. When we did ask for things, it took him a significant amount of time and likely required several reminders to get everything we needed. We ended up having to walk over to the bar for water refills and ask another waiter for assistance with the check. Additionally, the food took FOREVER to arrive. We had to follow up several times. Been wanting to try this place and we did. 2:30 on a Tuesday I'm giving a 4 star because I love their cider. Pros- -Waitress Melissa was great! -Cider is very good especially the Sunset, tart cherry. -Food quality was decent. -Service was good. Food ordered and promptly served hot. Cons- -The one thing I wanted to try, Bolgogi bowl, was out. -Location not great -Portion size was much smaller than expected. I know restaurants are cutting back but this was a tad off for the pricing. -I had an Asian bowl that for $16 had no meat just veggies and rice noodles and was a very very small portion until I added chicken for another $4. It WAS NOT a $19 meal. -My husband's ribeye sandwich with fries was $17. While good, $15 would be more appropriate price for what was received compared to other restaurants we've been to. I know we'd go back for the cider and an appetizer but not a meal. At another table the Cheese curds looked good. But when they brought the guys Shepard pie I wanted to Laugh Out Loud. It was served in maybe a 4-5" cast iron 1"deep skillet. And it wasn't mounded with food. They definitely were discussing the size of his meal. It was kind of embarrassing. Lol. Really! Mash potatoes and Hamburg and few veggies in a 1" deep 4-5" pan...it should have been an appetizer. In their defense they have two sizes but again for the price, I can't imagine what the larger portion would look like for the price. Soooooo....all this to say. Expect great cider and have a snack.
