However, the system was not set up correctly from the start. It relied heavily on auxiliary heat during heating and failed to cool properly when tested at the start of summer. When I reached out to Meade's, their technician confirmed that the outdoor unit wasn't operating correctly and that the refrigerant was significantly out of specification. As a result, the system effectively ran in an incorrect configuration for nearly three months during peak winter, leading to significantly higher electricity bills (about 3x normal). Once corrected, the system behavior changed immediately. This was also clearly evidenced through Nest thermostat history, which showed auxiliary heat being used on nearly every heating cycle during that period. I understand that energy usage was higher for many homeowners during the colder months, but in this case the system behavior changed noticeably after the issue was fixed, which points to a setup issue rather than just weather. These were installation-related issues that should have been caught during initial setup. While Meade's was responsive in sending a technician after i reached out to them to get the system checked, there was no acknowledgment of the impact beyond that. A technician came and without really looking at anything in particular, started upselling me by pushing me to purchase the entirely new unit. Even to a laymen such myself, it sounded utterly ridiculous. I immediately searched Yelp, had a good feeling about Relax HVAC and called the number. Nasser answered the phone, asked me all pertinent questions and informed me that that he could come for a diagnostic visit the same evening, which was spectacular, as it was cold and I had two little kids at home with no heat. Nasser arrived punctually at the promised time, expertly and carefully examined the unit and informed me of all available options. One by one, he troubleshooted each part of the heat until he zeroed in on the gas valve being an issue that caused the malfunction. Unfortunately, Nasser did not have this specific valve with him, but readily volunteered to purchase and install it next day. And that's exactly what he did. Remarkably, he did it despite the morning snowfall and probably horrendous traffic conditions. He came in promptly, expertly installed the valve and like "magic" heater started working again. Without going into specific prices, this repair cost me at least 10 times less than the other company was trying to charge me. The $75 diagnostic fee also seemed very reasonable, especially, considering that Nasser was able to come to my place within hours of my initial call. I contacted Cardinal, which proposed replacing the dead compressor as well as a few other small but aging parts in my otherwise excellent existing system. Upon receiving the compressor, Pablo the managing technician, came over an did the technically challenging tasks of retrofitting the heat pump to work with the new compressor, installing new parts to rejuvenate the system, and waiting patiently for the system to optimize before turning it on. Overall, wirking with Cardinal allowed me to save my existing system, while making improvements at the same time. This saved me several thousands of dollars and preserved an HVAC ystem I already liked.
