Dimsum time
Susan C.

3.5 stars. I've been to New Mulan twice, once for a wedding banquet some ears ago and most recently for dimsum. On a holiday morning they opened at 10am, we arrived at 10:30am and there were plenty of seats. By the time we left the 250ish seats in their main banquet hall area were full and there was a line of about 50 people waiting in the lobby to be seated. Regular weekends are probably similar, with much fewer people on weekdays. They also have a separate banquet side which I believe is a little smaller, both are bookable for special events. First thing when arriving to your table is indicating what tea you want to order, commonly chrysanthemum, black or jasmine are options, though in our case my friend bought leaves from home and asked the staff for a ceramic teapot of hot water, which they were fine to provide. They do the old school dimsum pushcarts; wave over a dimsum lady passing by your table to check out available dishes on each cart. They have more or less all the staples--steamed meat/fish/shrimp balls, pan-fried taro and turnip cake, various steamed marinated meats, rice rolls and dumplings, fried savory and sweet puffs, buns, cakes. For vegetables, entree-size rice and noodle dishes and specialty items like seafood, you'll need to place orders with the waiters, then they are in part brought to tables by robot servers (see pic). Items I'd recommend: black pepper beef ribs, beef tripe with ginger, lotus leaf-wrapped sticky rice with filling, shiumai, baked roast pork buns with sweet topping. If you enjoy durian (I'm not a fan) I heard the durian puffs were good. I'd order again: any of the steamed rice noodles, pork spareribs with black bean sauce, steamed roast pork buns, egg custards, Chinese broccoli steamed with oyster sauce, fried eggplant with shrimp balls on top. A couple things were kind so-so or off that morning--my piece of shrimp in the steamed rice roll with shrimp tasted a little weird though the shrimp in the crystal shrimp dumpling was fine. The stewed tripe with turnip was just ok, kinda chewy and we didn't finish this. Both of these items are dim sum staples so it could just be an off day. Aside from waving over the dim sum carts, service is basically up to you to get the staff's attention if you need water refilled for tea, want to place an order, or request a check. That being said they're usually pretty quick once you flag them down. Bring the check up to the front register to pay, cash or card accepted.

In the Crossing Queens mall. Hot, greasy dim sum. Fast friendly and helpful service. Eat at the common area. I came early so plenty of space and no crowds.

I came here for a wedding, although the wedding was fun with good company, mc, music, and friends. I would have to say the food was lacking. All of the food was bland in the exception of the pan fried noodle which was way too salty. In addition, the service was lacking, usually the staff would set the food down and serve some or most of it to the table. The wait staff did not do that for any of the tables. The food came out fast when it started, but again the staff member did the minimum of simply bringing the food out and did not serve nor switch out the dirty plates. I wouldn't come here to dine unless it was a must like for somebody's wedding banquet.

Just as chaotic and delicious as the last time we came. My favorite has to be those little salted custard buns with the pig face on it. Something new I tried this time was the Yin and Yang fried rice dish and it was out of this world. Rich and comforting but also sweet and sour!!! So delicious! Just like last time the place was HOPPING! Carts go up and down, and there is so much food but the value is unbeatable! Looking forward to my next trip for sure, and worth taking my family too next time they are in town.

Solid. Good food at good prices with great service. My opinion of the service might be skewed because my family has the gift of gab and somehow knew most of the staffers by name, but they're responsive and friendly enough in general. Ambience is fine. It's actually pretty spacious with plenty of room between tables and wide open cart paths. The bathrooms are a bit more unfortunate with limited stalls and noticeable wear and tear across the board. As with many Chinese places, the money is on the table. Food is strong. No compromises here in terms of flavor, quality and quantity. Standouts include the famous spare ribs and har gow with thin but structurally sound wrappers. Large portions of stir fried carbs can round out a meal nicely.

I came with my friend who knew what to order. The carts come around and you can choose what dishes you want. We had so much food it was amazing! One dish had mushrooms so I couldn't eat it (I believe it was the rice wrapped in a leaf), but everything else I had was top notch, hot and fresh. And the price, inexpensive. The service was fast, we also had some hot tea which was great. We came on a Sunday morning and it wasn't busy at all, about an hour later it got packed! Take the elevator upstairs to the actual restaurant.

This review is for their takeout spot located in the Queens Crossing food court. It's a welcome addition to the roast meats/dim sum scene in Flushing. I tried their roasted meats over rice (fried pork belly and char siu) and also got a hot soy milk with sugar. The combo came with a generous portion of white rice, steamed napa cabbage, and a bit of sauce. The char siu meat was a bit tough as they seemed to use a lean cut. The siu yuk was better as the skin was crispy and the meat had good flavor. If you get the soy milk with sugar added, make sure to mix it yourself before drinking otherwise there will just be a pile of sugar left at the bottom (speaking from experience...). Cash only!

New Mulan Restaurant is our go-to family gathering spot when we want a private room and karaoke! This restaurant has free parking for up to 3 hours however if you go over, they will charge. They charged us extra $4 since we were over 3 hours. We had a private room with our own karaoke machine and we spent the entire night singing and dancing the night away with family! It was the best way to spend Chinese New Year! Some notable dishes we had were the walnut shrimps, marinated short ribs, lobster, crabs, crispy chicken, whole steamed fresh fish, wow! The dishes were so delicious and flavors were great! Overall, love the ambiance, free parking, and delicious dishes! We can't wait to celebrate another family gathering at New Mulan!

solid dimsum spot that still has the push cart dimsum ladies. It's never too crowded and my family and I almost never have to wait. Even for a busy day like Mother's Day service is quick and efficient. Has all your typical dimsum dishes - we love the roast pork puff pastry here and the special crab sticky rice or mushroom e-fu noodles.

Crowded for Friday Dim Sum!
Andie E.

Dim Sum!!! I've been to New Mulan for dim sum several times, and each time was great. The restaurant is very spacious, and I appreciate that there was decent space between the tables. Service & hospitality were good. Dirty plates were removed quickly, empty teapots replenished often. The cart ladies did a good job displaying all the dim sum items. Note that the dim sum selections on a weekday differ slightly from the selections on a weekend; with weekend selections having a bit more variety. Both still very good. One advantage of going on a weekday is the price; with most dishes costing just $3.95 (excluding specialty items). I hosted an Unofficial Yelp Event (UYE) for 10 people on a weekday, and the cost was just $16 per person (including tax & tip!). What a bargain! We were all shocked! I would definitely return for dim sum again. Shout-out for all the Yelpers who came for dim sum today! Great to see everyone!

This was an unbelievable-amazing-fun-experience that I can't wait to do again. My fellow Elite (Andie) messaged to invite me to this luncheon she was setting up in Flushing, an unofficial Yelp event. (UYE). There was no way I was going to miss this. Our Elite group here of 10 people are a very special makeup of people who love both good food and fun company. It was so nice to have our community managers from both Queens and Nassau.. Special KUDOS to both Samantha and Jared. This is not one of those easy-in-and outs off the main road or parkway. I drove to Flushing, parked in a lot and walked around the corner. The lots here are reasonably priced, (not like parking in NYC.) From that spot is was a simple walk around the corner enter building and take elevator to 2nd floor. This place is HUGE-BRIGHT-LIVELY with an amazing amount of electricity in the air. There is also a stage at the end which makes this a perfect spot for events too. Our table was at the end so I had to maneuver through the many carts filled with mountains of food being delivered to the different tables. I am afraid that I can't tell you all that I ate because I don't know any of the names of the items. The ones I know are the the pork and shrimp shumai, fried rice, beef tripe with ginger scallion, roast pork buns, and more... many many more. There are plenty of pictures of the food, and our group. I enjoyed everything and kept reaching out for more. That's the beauty of the dim sum meal. This was a great place, great atmosphere and great experience. Dim sum
Anna L.

Pretty large restaurant located on the 2nd floor of Queens Crossing mall. We went during the weekend and it wasn't very crowded. We didn't need to wait for a table. Their dim sum prices is $5 per plate as of this review. The dim sum was average. They also have good prices for their specials (lobster with noodles and soft shelled crab sticky rice). The sticky rice was delicious. They open early for dim sum but won't start taking non dim sum orders until 11am.

Came here for family dinner to celebrate my niece's birthday. It was a bit of a trek for me to come from Brooklyn, but you do things like this for the people you love. We had a reservation for 9 people and were sat early. There are two dining spaces -- we sat on the left while the right was reserved for a 100 day baby thing (both spaces could be used for banquet hall events, like weddings). The Good: -Ample space -Well decorated -Best dish was the soft shell crab glutinous rice -Stir fried steak with celery and shitake mushrooms was perfectly seasoned and cooked medium-rare/medium -The Chinese eggplant stuffed with shrimp was really good and flavourful The Meh: -Walnut shrimp had very little shrimp (maybe 10?) -The fried chicken with garlic was flavourless -The snow pea shoots needed more salt -They forgot our baked oyster dish until the very end at which point we had finished the rest of the dinner already. All in all, fine fare, but I'm not sure I needed to come all the way to Flushing for this.

The staff wanted my wife to sit at an angle to the table; so that they could pass through. The seafood itself was solid traditional Cantonese fare with fresh lobster tanks, steamed fish, and classic banquet-style dishes. The atmosphere felt colorful authentic Hong Kong banquet hall energy. However, some of their pricing was completely out of whack. Mother's Day premium for sure which is understandable, but some dishes were simply excessively expensive for what was delivered. For example, our two lobsters, while fresh, were missing that smoky "wok hei" flavor that great Cantonese kitchens are known for. It lacked the depth, aroma, and richness one expects from a proper high-heat wok preparation. A few items felt priced more for Guide Michelin luxury dining than a Flushing seafood hall. This said, the service was efficient and professional; changing plates all the time. So a high level of attention above the usual Cantonese restaurant. Overall, decent food in and an authentic Hong Kong style restaurant that targets special family gatherings, but be prepared, both the crowds and the bill can become overwhelming very quickly. I paid more than $400 for three people. But we had a Tiger Fish which is $50 per pound.

I have so many reasons to believe that Emperor is truly the reincarnation of the restaurant...just a little rusty. I've only come here for dim sum and I'm still surprised it doesn't get even half of the insane volume that nearby dim sum restaurants get, especially with how much closer they are to Roosevelt Ave. I have to say that the dim sum here is slightly better than most locations in the core downtown area, both in presentation and taste. No cart ladies, just a paper and pencil ordering system. The other diners that I usually encounter seem to strike me as locals, which is becoming harder to find these days. Prices are slightly more expensive than the other places, which is probably a factor as to why there aren't as many customers. The other reason is probably the subpar customer service here, which I've encountered on a number of recent visits. There are so many workers here, but none of them seem to have any good grasp of what customer service is. For example, I've had the waiter hover over me as I was gathering cash for my bill and snatched it the moment I placed the money down, also demanding at least 18% (again, for subpar service). Also, if you complain to them about your food, even if you find a hair, they will not do anything about it. The food quality is slightly above most of the dim sum places, but also bear in mind the hit-or-miss service you'll get, which the latter can be super frustrating.

There are some generally Good (4 stars) places, like Asian Jewels and Emperor Seafood, but most other places are somewhere between OK and Good (between 3 and 4 stars). Royal Queen 君豪大酒楼 is part of that latter group -- there are good things, but there is also mediocrity; and there are customer service issues. The good: - Beef Rice Noodle Rolls: The rice noodle rolls here are generally silky soft. There is supposedly parsley in the beef mince but we noticed little to none in the versions we've had. Royal Queen is generous with the sweetened soy sauce; they pour it from a teapot. - Pan-Fried Leek Dumplings 韭菜煎蝦餃: the shrimp are generally fresh and crisp. - Shrimp Siu Mai with Pork 蝦粒乾蒸燒賣: above average. - The Osmanthus Jelly 杞子桂花糕 has a deeper hue than most other places in Queens. The OK: - Five-Spice Braised Beef Tendon 五香蒸牛筋: pieces are generally little too large and not as consistently soft as other places. - Steamed Leek Dumplings: get the pan-fried version instead. - Stuffed Peppers 煎釀青椒: as with other places, inconsistently cleaned so there can be one or two bites that have an extreme amount of heat. - Shrimp Siu Mai: essentially the same as the ha gow, but in a different wrapper. I think we prefer the shrimp siu mai over the ha gow here. The Could Be Better: - Taro Dumplings (Wu Gok 芋角): lacks ingredients in the filling. - Staffing and Quality Control Issues: Royal Queen has plenty of staff, yet sometimes there aren't enough people working the dim-sum carts. Like many other Chinese restaurants, it seems that staff aren't empowered to address food quality issues. - The restrooms can be pretty good compared to those in other parts of the building. We observed people come into and out of the restaurant seemingly just to use the restrooms. However, there are times when the restrooms could be better maintained.
