Literally a hole in the wall that needs some extra loving as it is ranked as one of Indy's best Chinese restaurant on MSN. My husband comes home like a town crier with the news. It left me a bit surprised that this nook made it onto the list. Asian Snack is as close to street side dining in China right smack dab inside Saraga. There's a small booth rental with a very small sit down area to eat. Afterwards, you can go treasure hunting in the supermarket full of ethnic finds. We were lucky to trudge into a big crowd, and it was almost impossible to push a shopping cart in, let alone stand there without being bumped. I'm sure you'd get trampled if you fell over....Then again, I always go there on a weekend and it's packed, literally feeling like a can of sardines. So be brave and fight the Saraga crowd to try this place out. History lesson 101: Where this "Asian Cuisine's stall" specializes in is from this port city in northeastern China (Tianjin), which is very well known for making flaky pastries, scallion pancake pockets, and noodles for their meal instead of rice being their primary staple like in other regions of China and Asia altogether. I could smell the fragrant aroma as I was at the counter looking at the menu.cThe lady at the counter speaks minimal English but they have a picture menu board as well as a menu with English translations. Just point to what you want and she'll write down the order. A man at the opposite corner was making a crispy egg crepe-like pancake (aka Jian Bing Guo Zi) stuffed with fried dough sticks, slathered with spicy sauce, topped with scallions and sesame seeds. I HAD TO TRY THIS AT LEAST ONCE. It's quite entertaining to watch him make it (as I was filming). That Jian Bing was so enormous that we had to take it home to reheat as a snack. I must say, it was crunchy and had a very unique texture and flavor. They also made flaky cake like pastries stuffed with taro, black sesame, or red bean from scratch. We bought a black sesame and red bean filled mini cake and a Chinese hamburger "Rou ma jio" to-go. The mini cakes remind me of a "moon cake" since it's dense, but it has a wonderful flaky dough. They don't have mutton hamburgers, but the pork as amazingly juicy with the perfect amount of spice. I saw a couple of young college students get a bowl of the beef noodles, which looked spectacular. Next time we come back, we'll be dining in and trying something new. read more

I've lived in Indy for 5 years and am very upset I just now discovered Asian Snack! Tucked away in Saraga grocery store, Asian Snack is clearly not the place to go on a fancy dinner date; however, it is the perfect place to go get cheap, delicious, authentic Chinese food. I had the dumplings and fried noodles and they both did not disappoint. The dumplings were some of the best I've had. The fried noodles were very garlicy, but not in an off putting way. Just plan on popping a mint afterwards if you are heading anywhere. I went with 4 stars instead of 5 simply because of the setting. It doesn't bother me, but if you are looking for a nice place to sit and enjoy a meal, this isn't really it. Besides that, I definitely highly recommend Asian Snack. You can't beat the price and you can pick up really unique grocery items at Saraga while you're there! read more

The best Chinese food in America. This place is amazing. Super good food. A friend who grew up in China took me here the other day and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I have eaten "Chinese" food all my life, but, until now had never actually eaten Chinese Food. I got the Zi Ran Yang Rou (lamb), Gan Bian Si Ji Dou (green beans), Tu Dou Si (potatoes), La Zi Ji (chicken). They were all amazing. They looked similar to what I had eaten before, but, the flavors were much more rich and interesting. The potatoes were cut so shoe-string thin I thought they were noodles until I put them in my mouth. So many peppers, so many spices. It's heavy and I hesitate to say "greasy" because it's more of an "oil" than anything. The oil from the spicy peppers, the oil from the wok, the oil from the veggies, the oils from the meat cooking. Nothing dry about any of this, but, not "greasy" in the way that so many American places can tend to be. It's just super duper good. I will be going back so many times. read more

This place has the best Chinese Tianjin(天津) regional food in Indiana even Midwest. All the crews are from Tianjin which makes they cook the exactly same flavor as what you can get when you are in Tianjin, China, not to mention they are so nice and funny. I love this place. Found it while visiting IND. had it for lunch. What a great experience to go through the international grocery store and then eat at this little place in the grocery store. Server (daughter?) was great. Very helpful in explaining the dishes. Cook (dad?) making stuffed pancakes out front. Sit with strangers and enjoy a simple, tasty and inexpensive meal. I've been to Saraga several times, and I always passed by Asian Snack until recently. I love Asian food, but this place is tiny, and I never really gave it much thought. This last time though, I felt like having a meat bun and decided to stop. I purchased a meat bun and a beef pancake and both were absolutely delicious, I cannot stop thinking about them, and have been craving them ever since! I look forward to my next trip, and I will make sure that I'm hungry when I get here so that I can taste even more of their offerings! read more

I lived in the Zhejiang province in China for a year and a half. While I am glad to be back stateside for many reasons, I still dream about the consistency and flavor of noodles in the chao mian. I have gone to so restaurants looking for noodles that even come close. Mostly these have been fruitless endeavors. Then there was Asian snack. Get the noodles with pork. Get the bao zi (steamed pork buns). Get the jidan bing (egg and crepe roll up with fried bread stick (you tiao)), maybe with a little extra sauce. Hands down, most authentic Chinese restaurant in Indy and, for several dishes (including the chao mian) one of the most authentic in my travels in the US. While it is basically two mismatched tables and a steamer counter in the front of Saraga Grocery Store, it has been a Godsend. Best Chinese street food I've had in the states. Go. read more

We have eaten Asian food all around the country, unfortunately we have not had the pleasure of eating outside the US, but this is my FAVORITE place. Inexpensive, for 2 of us we can eat here and be FULL for under 15 with drinks and an appetizer. There are only 3 tables, this is not your typical restaurant. This is not Americanized Chinese food, if your idea of great Asian food is Panda Express or PF Changs, you have been missing out.
