    Exam room (for my cat)
    Jeffrey C.

Recently moved to Reno and my cat over a few days grew lethargic and was eating only about 20% of what he normally eats. I was cringing about taking him in as I know going to the vet, except for a routine check-up isn't cheap, to say the least. But I would have felt neglectful waiting any longer. I spent a couple hours reading reviews on two different sites of all the Vet clinics South of I-80 (since I live in South Reno.) I narrowed it down to 4 potential candidates ranked in order out of about 10 or 12. Options was my #1 solely based on the fact they are a non-profit and less expensive but I was expecting a long wait to get an appointment. #2 Aspen, and #3 was Galena. I was iffy on #4 so I won't mention it. As expected Options didn't answer their phone and the recording said they were typically 2 weeks out on appointments and in most cases can't take urgent care appointments. Not surprised. Aspen answered the phone when I called at 8:20am and scheduled an appointment at 9:00am. Filled out the new patient form on their website. Check-in was basically "Hi! We're here." and in the exam room within 7 minutes. Very airy, large high ceiling lobby with plenty of chair and bench seating so there's ample space to keep your distance from other customers and their pets. Plenty of parking too. The staff was courteous, professional, and most important, LISTENED WELL, and didn't seem in a hurry to get done with you and on to the next patient. They did what is typical with most vets (and Dentists LOL) is present you with an ALL recommended options treatment plan. I call this the "Full Meal Deal." For those that treat their pet like a human child and you buy them designer clothes with your deep pockets, then the "Full Meal Deal" is for you so to speak. I would think it borderline negligent for a Vet not to present all recommended options. But when I asked, can we prioritize this and break it into stages? They said sure, no problem! The Doctor was even quick to say, I'd recommend doing this and this today, but really, I don't see a problem if you wanted to skip these things and see how things go. NO PRESSURE OR UPSELL. Bravo! Another big plus at this clinic is they have their own lab so for a lot of the tests (not all) you get bloodwork tests results back while you wait (15-20 min, about 15 min in my case). So you're not agonizing at home waiting for that call with results. I like that Dr. Hewitt is also young so I won't have to be changing vets soon because she is retiring. Her temperament and exam room demeanor are top notch being very easy to talk to. I cannot say that for several vets I've visited in the past. One more word regarding cost. A lot of people's reviews for vets state the cost was "reasonable" or "too expensive". Those are very subjective terms depending on an individual's financial situation. Reaonable or expensive, in who's opinion and/or compared to what? Other reviewers seem to confirm that this place is average priced. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive. (I confirmed that myself with a little due diligence.) BUT, keep in mind, prescription meds at virtually all Vets will be much higher priced than using 1800PetMeds, Costco, or Walgreens and Aspen is no exception. In that case, it's the quality of care you get that matters. And so far so good. I think I made a great choice.

    Savannah's first vet visit!

I trust Aspen for all appointments and procedures. I always get follow up calls and appointments reminders and they have an online portal. They are easy to get in contact with and the doctors and staff are very knowledgeable. Being a first time dog mom, Dr. Marissa Wehrman and other staff and doctors make me feel at ease. My baby Savannah is always taken care of and I trust that she is always in good hands. Can't say better things about Aspen Animal Wellness! 10/10 recommend!

Aspen Animal Wellness opened their doors recently and I am so happy they did! I had a bit of an emergency with my cat, she wasn't feeling well and we weren't sure of the issue. After calling around Aspen was able to get her in same day just a few hours after I called, such a relief! They also gave me the option of an in-clinic or curbside appointment, I really liked that because my cat is super timid and scared of the vets office (we have a regular vet that comes to our house actually because of this), and I like to be there with her and most other vets I called are only doing curbside at the moment (which is totally understandable too). They are located on Longley & Maestro, which is really close to where we live, so convenient and best for my cat since she hates car rides. The office was really fresh and clean, and well laid out. We were the only patients there when I arrived so I felt really safe! We were greeted and placed in the cat friendly room right away. They sprayed the room with feliway which helps calm cats. It was only a few minute wait until we were seen by Dr. Tori Indart, who was incredibly patient and calm with my cat. She even had a cat playlist on her phone of calming music to soothe my cats nerves, it seemed to really help! In fact, my cat let her pet her right away without hissing which is huge because she hisses at every single vet we have ever seen! Dr. Indart was very personable and listened patiently as I explained my cats history and current issues and checked my cat over, luckily her vitals were fine and it seemed to just be a false alarm, and I was told to monitor her closely to see if anything changed. Upon leaving, the vet tech made sure to check the lobby for us for any dogs before we headed to the car which was so appreciated! The following day, the office even called to check on my cat's health! Overall, I was very happy with the wonderful service we received at Aspen Animal Wellness so much so we have decided to become regular patients in addition to our in-home vet!

He was stumbling a lot more than usual and having trouble breathing. I called this emergency vet and let them know our situation and that we were on our way. There were a lot of people in the waiting room when we arrived. I was afraid we would have to wait while my little guy was struggling to breath and possibly in pain. However, they quickly led us into a room and took my dog into the back right away. They gave him something to help with pain and ease his breathing. They wrapped him in a soft blanket and gave him back to us. They told us we can have all the time we needed with him and to let them know when we are ready for the veterinarian to come in. When we were ready, the vet came pretty quickly. Again, I was surprised as they were obviously very busy. She explained everything she was going to do. We held our little guy in our arms as she administered the medication. She let us hold him and patiently listened to us talk about him. When we felt we had said our goodbyes, she took him from us and gave her condolences. It was an emotional night but this entire staff was friendly and compassionate. Our precious fourteen year old female was called beautiful and had pics taken of passerby's. When we picked her up after her being there for three hours or more ( every visit the same amount of time ) we just wanted to get them home. With her we noticed immediately her " beautiful fan tail " was no more. Her hind leg had been shaved to the bone. The shaver got away from one of their employees and that employee was not honest enough to report it. And if it was reported to his or her employer when we picked up our precious dog the incident was ignored and she was handed over to us like nothing ever happened. Now, a few months later she still has the large bald spot on the back of her hind leg where no hair has grown.. Her tail is completely butchered it hasn't grown out to its " beautiful fan wave" for a Collie after all this time. " I cant imagine what she was put through" being there! Our two year old male dog the most loving ever had his face completely missed his beard went over his lip. I trimmed it myself. I'm grateful our male dog hadn't gone through the trauma our precious female had gone through. I personally feel that someone there ( management) should be taking responsibility by checking while dogs are being groomed by ( newbies ) or any employee in any manner. I feel my female dog was left with a newbie and was not given the attention to this employee that he or she needed with managing. My daughter and I were under the impression that the woman that met us outside( same woman that groomed twice before ) asked how we'd like their grooming taken care of would be the one attending to both our dogs we trusted her grooming since she had done both our dogs twice before and we were happy with their outcome We had made recommendations to friends about Animal Oasis. We put our trust in the woman who greeted us who seemed interested in our concerns towards their grooming. This business failed my dogs and us. We should have looked at the grooming before paying the $100.00 per dog and not given the tips. I've never had to write up a complaint I waited hoping my female dog would grow her beautiful hair back to its original shape " Not" ! The Animal Oasis deserves this complaint. If you go to Animal Oasis after my complaint ask questions like who will be attending fully to my animal and look carefully after the work has been completed to your satisfaction before tipping. Get names, your dog is part of your loving family and should be treated like so.

The calming environment helps reduce the stress of vet visits, and the breathtaking mountain views add to the serene atmosphere. Parking is easy and convenient. The first-time appointment costs $160 total, which felt a bit steep for the Reno area. It requires a $50 deposit to book the appointment, with the remaining $110 due on the day of the visit. New clients should also expect to wait a couple of months for a first-time appointment, depending on the veterinarian. The staff and nurses are incredibly sweet, welcoming, and professional. I enjoyed meeting Dr. Brown she seemed knowledgeable and caring, and she took plenty of time to address my concerns and answer my questions. During our first appointment, I was hoping for a more holistic approach to my dog's care, similar to the philosophy of Dr. Karen Becker (author of The Forever Dog). I was looking for guidance based on peer-reviewed studies around raw diets, nutrition, natural lifestyle choices, and all-natural prevention for longevity. Instead, after some initial discussion, the conversation quickly shifted to the standard recommendations for vaccines and flea/tick medications. I was a bit disappointed by that. After the appointment, I was referred to a local nutritionist and recommended for a dental cleaning. However, the estimate for dental cleaning, bloodwork, titer tests, and vaccines came to nearly $4,093.85, which shocked me. Because of the high cost, I decided to seek more budget-friendly and pragmatic options at another local veterinarian for vaccines and dental work, and I'll likely continue there to keep expenses manageable. The communication process also felt confusing and unnecessarily complicated at first. Everything is handled through text messages that link to the patient portal on their website. While the team usually responds the same day or within 24 hours for non-urgent messages, the back-and-forth and need to navigate the portal made simple tasks like scheduling the dental cleaning and receiving the diet recommendation -- feel frustrating. As someone who prefers more traditional, direct communication (such as a quick phone call), this system was challenging for me. Overall, it's a solid practice with great people and a lovely facility. It's luxury with a premium price for pet care. I especially appreciated the thoughtful welcome card they mailed to me with everyone's signature -- that was a nice personal touch. They could improve by streamlining their communication, offering more competitive pricing, and reducing wait times for new patients. I'd consider returning in the future with some hesitation, particularly if they can provide more reasonable rates and a stronger focus on holistic care in line with Dr. Karen Becker's philosophy in The Forever Dog. With an unlimited budget, I would happily go back.
