My beloved pug Bella - had an appointment on August 6 which I haven't been to Aspen Animal Hospital. It would've been her first visit, but since my vet, Pinion Animal Hospital recommended taking my pug to Carson Valley Hospital in Gardnerville where they sedated my pug, in order to take x-rays of her ear, which she was having a problem and they flushed her left ear she was coming out of sedation and crashed and died. Aspen advertises low-stress, fear-free handling. Our experience was the complete opposite. We brought Buddy in because he had become lethargic and was acting noticeably different from normal. Instead of listening and trying to understand the change, the person handling our appointment immediately acted like we were being irrational or overly dramatic for wanting him evaluated. Her response was essentially, "So it's just behavioral? He hasn't had diarrhea? He hasn't been vomiting? Interesting." She then commented on him being nervous and suggested it must be an ongoing issue at home. That was an insulting assumption to make before she had even meaningfully interacted with or examined him. We were not asking her to invent a diagnosis. We were asking her to listen, take a significant change seriously, and help us determine whether something medical could be causing it. The whole reason we came to a veterinarian was to find out whether it was behavioral or medical--not to have it dismissed as "just behavioral" because he wasn't vomiting or having diarrhea. At the same time, she tried to use an old visit for diarrhea from years ago to frame Buddy's current condition as an ongoing problem, even though that issue had resolved and had nothing to do with why we were there. She kept framing the conversation as what we were telling her "versus what the computer was telling her." She then claimed Buddy had previously received testing that he has never had. When I corrected her, she said she might have been thinking of the previous client's pet. Another staff member pointed out that she was looking at Buddy's chart, yet we never received a clear explanation or apology. She also entered without greeting Buddy or even acknowledging him. I have no problem with a veterinary professional asking whether a fearful dog may bite. That is a reasonable safety question. The problem was asking, "Can I put my hand down, or is he going to bite me?" without first trying to calmly introduce herself, acknowledge him, read his body language, or establish any trust. Offering him Cheez Whiz was not a substitute for actually interacting with him. As the interaction continued, Buddy became more anxious and started barking. There was no patience or real attempt to de-escalate the situation. When I said we were uncomfortable with the service, we were told, "If you have a problem with our services, you don't have to come here." So we left. A nervous dog should not be judged as a problem before anyone has even tried to meet him. His owners should not be made to feel unreasonable for noticing that something is wrong and asking for help. It is especially unacceptable from a clinic that specifically promotes low-stress and fear-free care. We will not return. I strongly hope management reviews the inaccurate statements about Buddy's medical history, the dismissive assumptions made about our home, and the way this entire appointment was handled. IF ANYONE NEEDS A VET FOR DOGS WHO GET NERVOUS AT THE VET ASPEN WOULD HONESTLY BE MY LAST CHOICE AND PROBABLY STILL WOULD'VE HAVE A BETTER CHANCE GETTING HIM ACTUALLY ASSESSED VIA TELEHEALTH (Which should tell you a lot!!) read more

I had a great experience here. My 11 year old Shih Tzu was showing signs of a uti. They were able to get her in same day, diagnosed her and gave her meds. This is definitely the vet you wanna go to if you wanna be harassed after you visit. I have never in my life gone and seen a vet where they continue to call you every week to get you to come back in for an overpriced visit. They are very expensive and then they harass you afterwards telling you that your dog needs to come in for it shots even though I have told them to stop calling me and they won't quit. It is awful and I hate being harassed by companies. So if that's what you like, someone to constantly call you this is the place for you. read more

Recently moved to Reno and my cat over a few days grew lethargic and was eating only about 20% of what he normally eats. I was cringing about taking him in as I know going to the vet, except for a routine check-up isn't cheap, to say the least. But I would have felt neglectful waiting any longer. I spent a couple hours reading reviews on two different sites of all the Vet clinics South of I-80 (since I live in South Reno.) I narrowed it down to 4 potential candidates ranked in order out of about 10 or 12. Options was my #1 solely based on the fact they are a non-profit and less expensive but I was expecting a long wait to get an appointment. #2 Aspen, and #3 was Galena. I was iffy on #4 so I won't mention it. As expected Options didn't answer their phone and the recording said they were typically 2 weeks out on appointments and in most cases can't take urgent care appointments. Not surprised. Aspen answered the phone when I called at 8:20am and scheduled an appointment at 9:00am. Filled out the new patient form on their website. Check-in was basically "Hi! We're here." and in the exam room within 7 minutes. Very airy, large high ceiling lobby with plenty of chair and bench seating so there's ample space to keep your distance from other customers and their pets. Plenty of parking too. The staff was courteous, professional, and most important, LISTENED WELL, and didn't seem in a hurry to get done with you and on to the next patient. They did what is typical with most vets (and Dentists LOL) is present you with an ALL recommended options treatment plan. I call this the "Full Meal Deal." For those that treat their pet like a human child and you buy them designer clothes with your deep pockets, then the "Full Meal Deal" is for you so to speak. I would think it borderline negligent for a Vet not to present all recommended options. But when I asked, can we prioritize this and break it into stages? They said sure, no problem! The Doctor was even quick to say, I'd recommend doing this and this today, but really, I don't see a problem if you wanted to skip these things and see how things go. NO PRESSURE OR UPSELL. Bravo! Another big plus at this clinic is they have their own lab so for a lot of the tests (not all) you get bloodwork tests results back while you wait (15-20 min, about 15 min in my case). So you're not agonizing at home waiting for that call with results. I like that Dr. Hewitt is also young so I won't have to be changing vets soon because she is retiring. Her temperament and exam room demeanor are top notch being very easy to talk to. I cannot say that for several vets I've visited in the past. One more word regarding cost. A lot of people's reviews for vets state the cost was "reasonable" or "too expensive". Those are very subjective terms depending on an individual's financial situation. Reaonable or expensive, in who's opinion and/or compared to what? Other reviewers seem to confirm that this place is average priced. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive. (I confirmed that myself with a little due diligence.) BUT, keep in mind, prescription meds at virtually all Vets will be much higher priced than using 1800PetMeds, Costco, or Walgreens and Aspen is no exception. In that case, it's the quality of care you get that matters. And so far so good. I think I made a great choice. read more

My Samoyed has been a patient at Aspen for a couple of years. All interactions during that time were excellent. Recently, having been attacked by a pit Bull, Blizzard required after care and that care provided by Aspen was terrific. Blizzard never hesitates to enter the office, she's not afraid of being there. Our pup turns into a 55 lbs lap dog trying to climb on your back whenever she is taken to the vet. No need to go into the trauma (ate someone's discarded marijuana on a hike) that has maybe caused her to keep associating the vet with feeling pretty crappy. Poor . We wanted to give a shout out to the Vet Tech Jenna for her patience with our pooch and making her feel a bit more comfortable with the yummy treats. I think all the staff, including the Vet were very patient with her even after she would bark when they came in the room. Thank you. If there is any way to improve the smell in the reception lobby, that is the only change I could ask for. Once in the exam room the smell was gone. read more

I have been taking my cats to see Dr. Hicks for the last 6 years. She is a wonderful and caring vet. She has called me on a Sunday to check on my cat after he had some issues. She left another practice and I found she'd moved to Aspen Animal Wellness. It's a longer drive but I wanted to keep Dr. Hicks. She recently joined this practice because she believes in excellent of care for both the animal and owner. I felt the service at Aspen was top notch and reasonably priced. Aspen Animal Wellness opened their doors recently and I am so happy they did! I had a bit of an emergency with my cat, she wasn't feeling well and we weren't sure of the issue. After calling around Aspen was able to get her in same day just a few hours after I called, such a relief! They also gave me the option of an in-clinic or curbside appointment, I really liked that because my cat is super timid and scared of the vets office (we have a regular vet that comes to our house actually because of this), and I like to be there with her and most other vets I called are only doing curbside at the moment (which is totally understandable too). They are located on Longley & Maestro, which is really close to where we live, so convenient and best for my cat since she hates car rides. The office was really fresh and clean, and well laid out. We were the only patients there when I arrived so I felt really safe! We were greeted and placed in the cat friendly room right away. They sprayed the room with feliway which helps calm cats. It was only a few minute wait until we were seen by Dr. Tori Indart, who was incredibly patient and calm with my cat. She even had a cat playlist on her phone of calming music to soothe my cats nerves, it seemed to really help! In fact, my cat let her pet her right away without hissing which is huge because she hisses at every single vet we have ever seen! Dr. Indart was very personable and listened patiently as I explained my cats history and current issues and checked my cat over, luckily her vitals were fine and it seemed to just be a false alarm, and I was told to monitor her closely to see if anything changed. Upon leaving, the vet tech made sure to check the lobby for us for any dogs before we headed to the car which was so appreciated! The following day, the office even called to check on my cat's health! Overall, I was very happy with the wonderful service we received at Aspen Animal Wellness so much so we have decided to become regular patients in addition to our in-home vet! read more

This veterinary clinic is beautiful! Although it's not really critical to great veterinary care, it's really nice to step into a nice establishment. Marie greeted me at the front and was extremely polite. I didn't need to do anything as I had filled out all the paperwork online (nice touch!). I was promptly brought back into a room and the vet tech (I am so sorry, I think I forgot her name...maybe it's Sam?) was exceptionally nice. She had the perfect temperament for both human and animal. She took a thorough history of my cat and made sure the doctor was fully briefed. I saw Dr. Hewitt by request. I know I sound like a broken record, but Dr. Hewitt was really nice and highly professional. She listened intently when I explained my cat's recent hospitalization and asked proper questions. She made great recommendations and talked about what the next steps for my cat looked like. Dr. Hewitt also helped demonstrate how to properly give my cat medication, which I greatly appreciate. Overall, I'm delighted with the service and care that my cat and I received at Aspen. The prices were completely reasonable and I am more than satisfied with the clinical recommendations I was given. My dog has been a patient here for a few months and I have nothing but good things to say about this vet. My girl is a rescue and is super nervous at the vet and the staff has been nothing but patient and kind to her. When she had a foxtail stuck in her ear they were extremely accommodating to get us in as soon as possible where most other clinics would have referred us to go to the emergency clinic. Their prices are slightly higher than our previous vet, but I believe it is well worth it to go to a clinic that takes a caring approach and addresses all of my concerns. read more

Everyone was super nice so I filled out the paperwork and got an appointment which was about a week and a half out. Today was our appointment. Dr. Hicks is who we saw. She was great, the tech was great as well as the people at the front. Mind you, I've been to many vets over the years and as a rule it's generally a positive experience. Our dog is very sassy, stubborn, and smart. We've taken her to other vets but live right by Aspen so when Tess grew and broke open a lump on her butt we thought we would give the clinic a try. We chose them because they were allowing pets' parents) provided that they are vaccinated and wearing a mask) and because we heard good things about them. Boy, were those rumors right! Not only at the reception the employee was able to start calming down our very nervous cat (with a specific product and a towel), but she also warned the assistant in the examination room of this "issue" and she followed up with the same product: Cornelia became a purring machine and almost fell asleep on the scale. We loved the attention toward her and us, the padding on the scale and the examining table, the cuddles, the explanations on every step and also the fact that the temperature is taken at the ear, something Cornelia appreciated A LOT. The day after they called to make sure everything was fine with Cornelia post vaccination! We'll be back with Poppea, when her time is up. read more

Aspen Animal Wellness is a professional and calming place for all people and animals. I began going to the clinic due to a change in my dog groomer's location, Sissy (who is absolutely amazing). So, essentially, she introduced me to Animal Wellness. However, I only went there for grooming needs as I had established a client relationship with another veterinary location. That is until Friday, July 22, 2022, when my dog had horrible GI issues. I called my veterinary's office to see if they could do a drop off. The answer by a new receptionist was no. They were booked solid and regardless of the severity of my dog's issues and history could not see her. I then called Aspen Animal Wellness to see if per chance, they had any available time to help by dog, Button and me. Lisa, the receptionist told me that they had an open appointment for clients with urgent needs but asked the Office Manager, Sharon if Button could have the appointment as she may have had Pancreatitis. They gave us the appointment. By the time I got Button to Aspen Animal Wellness, Lisa had received all of Button's records from our current veterinarian's office (where sadly I was told could not see Button). I then met with Dr. Hewitt, who was absolutely amazing! We discussed possible causes and tests to identify Button's condition. Within a short time, Dr. Hewitt determined Button had Colitis and was in fact dehydrated. She ordered a test for Pancreatitis, the results of which will come in today. Button was rehydrated, given a shot for diarrhea, a shot for her nausea and an antibiotic shot. Button was sent home with some low-fat sensitive stomach dog food, and medication. I cannot adequately provide enough praise for the staff, Dr. Hewitt, the calm environment and the care Button received. Button is 12 years old and has seen veterinarians in Arizona where we used to live and her in Reno. None compare with the environment, efficiency and caliber of staff as Aspen. read more

This place used to be wonderful until they hired a new doctor named dr hicks. She is pure evil! Will belittle you and the vet tech right in front of you. She misdiagnosed my cat and dog had to take them elsewhere to save there lives. Also with dentals she won't do extraction same day she will send you home with infected teeth and have you schedule another appointment for extractions so you have to pay even more money to put them under again and extract the bad teeth and stress out my dog even more. She is the worst person I've ever encountered!! Plus she is the only one that works on your animals teeth the good doctors won't do it. Amy at Aspen was super kind and worked me into their already-packed schedule for the day. Once there, they couldn't have treated my buddy with more care. The doctor was wonderfully gentle, thorough and knowledgable, talked through the various possible causes with me and came up with a plan of action, all at a reasonable price.
