    Black is Beautiful Vol. 2
    Johnny L.

Until I go to Michigan or find something better, this is my favorite Detroit style. Sweet, fresh San Marzano tomato sauce.. on my Meat Lover's that was supposed to have bacon, Canadian bacon, Italian sausage, pepperoni, and unfortunately, they don't have salami today.. but it was perfectly tasty in every bite with some parmesan shaken into the tomato sauce parts.. sweet, savory, cheesy makes it satisfying.. with a crisp crust.. I ordered the biggest one, which is 10x14 Black is Beautiful Vol. 2 was pretty good.. tasted like a dark beer with fruit notes Attentive service with constant check-ins The chef/owner is from Detroit.. Lots of high tops, lower seating, and some booths including bar top They also have a full bar, and not a lot of people know them for their pizza.. I guess because of their name, Brewery

Our family loves pizza and we're big fans of Detroit style. Assembly Brewing has been on our list of places to visit. Eater has them listed as one of their top sites in Portland. They have a a good crust that is spongy but not overly thick. They bake it with the crispy, cheesy edges in the traditional Detroit pizza style. The sauce is light, not heavily seasoned or salty. We ordered the D. It has pepperoni, Canadian bacon, green peppers, mushrooms and onions. We liked how they slice the peppers in large hunks and don't overcook them. Some places can cook them until they dry out, which wasn't the case here. Overall flavor was very light. Their sauce is very much like stewed tomatoes straight from the can with a little oregano. We prefer our Detroit style pizza a little heavier, and would also have liked the cheese cooked a bit darker. But that's just our preference. Each restaurant cooks their pizza differently. We do our best to try and appreciate the style of the restaurant we're at. If you like Detroit style with a lighter taste, this one is for you. If you go on Mondays, there's a $3 discount on large pizzas. The D is $31 instead of $34. We also ordered the seasonal house salad. Made from Kale, the salad had a number of different ingredients. But for $17, we didn't think it was a very good value. Overall, this was a pretty good pizza. But with so many good pizza options in Portland, we'll be visiting some of the others on the list before returning to Assembly Brewing.

Hungry for dinner and in search of food that could easily be reheated in our Airbnb, we found a brewer called Assembly Brewing that served some delicious looking pizza. Initially, our plan was to dine-in and enjoy a couple of brews with our pizza. However, visiting the business webpage and Yelp, I was able to confirm that this brewery only allows folks 21 and over to dine-in. I am by no means complaining about this; there have been plenty of times when my wife and I have been enjoying a meal and adult beverage, only to come into close contact with someone's misbehaving child...I say this with no judgement...just to prove that there is a time and place for everything. Upon entering the establishment, we were greeted by a fairly large open space with a beautiful art collage + plenty of seating and patrons laughing over brews. An employee greeted us from behind the bar/tap area, and proceeded to retrieve our takeout order of their Detroit-style "The D" large pizza. Since my ten year old son was patiently waiting in the car, we could not enjoy a quick brew. However, we figured that we would purchase two beer growlers for the road (no I'm not being literal). We ordered a juicy IPA called Celestial Citrus, which was delicious and lived up to it's name (very fruit forward). The plethora of positive Yelp reviews were indeed accurate...their Detroit-style pizza is BOMB (that means good folks). So good that I regretted not ordering two total pizzas for the three of us; the website says that their large (10" x 14") pizza serves 3-4 people, but that only allots for a party of four to only have two slices each (unless you ask the pizza to be cut into micro slices). My wife and I plan on stopping through Portland in the near future, we will definitely make a return visit to dine in and enjoy a pizza, their Jalapeño Popper Rolls (I regret not ordering these), and a few brews!

    Beers on tap! Cheers!

Amazing Detroit-Style pizza goes perfectly with their beers on tap! There is a small parking lot of angled parking supplemented with street parking. Picnic tables outside that is dog friendly, and dining area inside is big and open and bright with rolling garage door (open on nice days for maximum summer patio vibes) Bar is on the side with some arcade games in the corner. What a cool space! Bartender was knowledgeable about the beers on tap and recommended based on what I was looking for. Wait staff are all friendly and accommodating with all our needs! I highly recommend the artichoke dip (so many big pieces of artichokes!) and the cheese pockets! Yum! Ok now the star of the show - to be honest I'm not usually a big fan of Detroit-style pizza but WOW I was very impressed with the sponginess of the crust while still being semi crunchy, also the ratio of the sauce and cheese and topping just works! Bonus for it being minority owned and you need to come check it out for some bomb pizza!

Amazing beer, amazing Detroit Style Pizza paired with amazing service! This place gets five stars in all the boxes. We ordered a flight of beers, different styles and they were all good. We ordered a pepperoni pie and the crust was crispy, it had those crunchy cheese edges and a good flavored sauce on top. Only con on the pizza would be the pepperoni as I prefer the smaller cup and char. Only con was the small parking lot, all the spots were marked for compact cars and we're traveling the country in high roof cargo van (but we made it work). There's a few pinball games too and some merchandise. So if you love beer and you love Detroit style pizza you need to check this place out!

I had been wanting to try this place so long ago. Glad we finally did it. The pizza is the best one I have ever tried in a pub (referring to American pub style food of course). The place is big, has a lot of seating options. Service is very casual, you have to go to the bar and open a tab, food was out fast.

On a trip to Portland, we decided to get brunch in the area that Assembly was located. Having tried a variety of other breweries in the Portland area, my partner made it a point to stop at Assembly after our brunch. Walking in, Assembly Brewing has a fairly large venue with a bar and booth and table seating. It being a sunny afternoon, the venue just felt dark and uninviting, however, we were eager to sit and try some of their beers. My partner and I decided to sit at the bar, and perused the beer options. Our bartender was not friendly in the slightest. We ended up ordering two IPAs as we hung out at the bar. To order, other patrons had to come up to the bar to order, and the bartender was unfriendly and rude to other patrons as well. There was eye-rolling and she was impatient when people were looking at the pizza menu. The whole time, it just felt uncomfortable as we sipped our beers off to the side of the bar. I will say, the beer was decent, but the experience with the bartender just made for an uncomfortable setting to be in. After one beer, we decided to leave, and Assembly was unfortunately not a highlight of breweries on our trip.

This was easily my favorite pizza in Portland. I didn't realize how much I liked Detroit-style pizza before, and I'm not sure I can go back now. All pizzas were made super fresh, and the beer was excellent. The pizzas were quite a bit bigger than expected, even the small (4 slices) was quite filling. Seating area was large with lots of tables and booths, and service was very quick and friendly. We were able to get both a full pizza and individual slices.

Pizza Week 2024 Special - Butcher's Bolognese (beef rib, shank, and chuck from Proletariat Butchery)

Solid beer (I tried the kolsch which was crisp and refreshing). Spacious interior. On-site and street parking were both plentiful on an early Sunday afternoon. Super friendly staff and excellent, fast service! They checked on me throughout my stay and made me feel very welcomed. Takeout wasn't available for a whole pie of their pizza week special (Butcher's Bolognese) but I think it is for their standard pies. Not a big deal - I dined in and ate a couple slices so my partner, who wasn't with me, could also try it later. Great flavors. I do prefer a saltier cheese to really maximize that Detroit-style approach, but am glad to have tried out Assembly Brewing. I'll be back with friends for more bites and brews!

Good mix of music. Friendly staff behind the bar. Didn't mind serving a few samples. Great selection of beers -- I had the Hipster Hopper West Coast IPA. Very good! Pizza was superb. Crispy crust outside, delicious, plentiful melted cheese and fresh veggies on top. Thick crust, my favorite. Plenty of seating. Clean facilities. Even pinball machines and some video games. Great views of Foster Road. Maybe I'll be back sometime when I'm visiting again. Thank you.

The Detroit style pizza was really good. Bartender was friendly as well on an empty weekday. My friend and I would have stayed quite a bit longer and drank more beers but they don't have TV's so we left to go elsewhere to watch the World Series. Also, just a heads up it is a 21+ brewery so don't try to bring kids here. Honestly seems like it would be a fun place to hang out, drink some beers and watch a game but since the owners apparently refuse to have TV's I don't expect that we will be in all that often. Recommend for the food though

Visited Assembly Brewing during Pizza Week and had a great experience. Looking forward to going back! Located on SE Foster, Assembly is Oregon's first Black-owned and operated brewpub. They brew on site. Their beers tend to be balanced, accessible, and classic, rather than trendy or unique. They are just solid example of their categories. They're also a pizzeria, serving Detroit style pizza. That means rectangular, deep dish, crispy on the bottom, chewy in the middle. Delicious. I appreciate that they offered a vegetarian option for pizza week. Looks like their regular pizza menu has daily specials, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and both meat and non-meat pizzas. The have a small parking lot and lots of neighborhood free parking. Service was great, even during the rush of pizza week. They had a lot of staff roaming through the high top tables, checking for empty beers or available to grab extra parmesan. It was loud inside their warehouse-style room, but conversation was still possible and the servers were attentive to our orders. Notable at Assembly Brewing are their murals - one inside the dining room is an homage to Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals but adapted to a brewery. Outside is a very large mural of a phoenix. Both unique and gorgeous ways to decorate the space.

The patty was cooked with a slight pink -- exactly how it should be -- juicy, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The spring lettuce was an interesting switch from the usual, but it actually worked and gave the burger a fresh bite. It's a solid-sized burger too, definitely filling. Only minor thing was some of the cheese slid off, but nothing that took away from it overall. I also tried the Caesar salad. It didn't come with croutons (not sure if that's intentional), and while the dressing was evenly coated, the Parmesan was a bit heavy and ended up overpowering the rest. Not bad, just not as balanced as it could be. What really sets this place apart is the atmosphere. Great rooftop vibe and a fun place to hang out for an afternoon. We ordered a beer flight, and as someone who's had quite a few brewery flights and is pretty open-minded when it comes to beer, this one unfortunately missed the mark for me. The fantasy and the Dungeons & Dragons themes are really fun and totally calls to me. So therefore with our first experience here I stocked up on a lot of swag- shirts! My first beer with this brewery was a Red Ale or Amber Ale, The Lady of Embers. This was a very enjoyable first time beer with this brewery. Flavor features in this beer are Caramel, a roastiness, maltiness, biscuity and a dry finish. It proved to be a fun beer to try out for the first time and we were eager to come back and try more of their beers. A bit of time passed and we were able to do that. This time we got three different beers of different types to give us a well rounded experience with their beers. Cascade Falls was the first beer on the second experience that we delved into. This beer is a Cream Ale and I haven't had one in a while so I was quite eager to get a hold of another one again. This particular Cream Ale had peaches and vanilla as the primary flavors and they were pretty good. It was sweet but not heavy handed which made this beer pleasant. This beer was a collaboration beer with another brewery, Thunder Island Brewing Company. After that I moved into dark beer territory and got a stout by the name of The Ashbringer. This one I rated very highly on Untappd because I enjoyed the flavor profile so very much! This stout has flavor highlights of roastiness, a spiced presence, coffee, chocolate and some clove. It was a really well made stout...well balanced and one I really got into. I believe actually this was my favorite beer out of the several I have tried. The last beer was a Marzen beer, a type that isn't too terribly common but always a good one when I can get a hold of it. The name of this beer was the Hasta La Raiz. This is a nice light bodied beer that has maltiness, roastiness, some fruitiness and a bit of a floral presence. It was a fun one to try out for sure. TPK Brewing also serves food and it's quite good! We grazed off of several different appetizers here that we really enjoyed. The first one was the Yuca Frita which was Yucca cut into big, thick French Fries sort cuts and we dipped it into a green sauce as well as a pico de gallo type of dip which enhanced the experience. In addition to that we got a beef empanada that Steve and I split along with the same sauces...also excellent and then to round out our snacking here we got the Arepitas De Queso which is a white masa cake mixed with cheese and then deep fried. It also had the same sauces as the previous two appetizers but we were fine with that... we were all about it and deep into it. Steve and loved this place and would be thrilled to come back to enjoy more of their food and beers !

The other beers include some with floral flavors if you're into that kind of stuff. For sure it's a place with high quality beers. It's located on SE Stark between 10th and 11th. They're closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

It was fruity but not very sweet. A lot of cocktails i usually get are a bit too sweet so this was a nice change of pace. The bartender was helpful and quick with preparing drinks. So i definitely would recommend giving this place a visit.
