My husband and I tried Detroit-style pizza for the first time just a month ago in Austin, TX. Since then, we've been craving it and seeking out a good option here in Portland. I am so happy that we went to the grand opening at Assembly Brewing. The pizza was exactly what we wanted. Exactly. These guys really nailed it. They brew beer too! The beers on tap are all theirs. My husband tried one of the IPAs and also the pale ale. Both great beers that paired well with the pizza. I also like that they offer cider, wine, and cocktails in addition to beer. We can bring all of our visitors here! I highly recommend Assembly Brewing. We'll be returning as soon as we get our next pizza craving. I am looking forward to working our way through their menu! Detroit pizza rocks. Different from NY pizza... thicker and more emphasis on sauce... but terrific.

We've been frequenting Assembly Brewing since they opened in 2019, and it's got a dimly lit open space dining area, with a couple of booths and tables scattered throughout. Large open windows that open up to Foster street and painted murals on the walls of the establishment. During the summer, they have a cozy patio section lined up against the building. It's my favorite Detriot-style pizza joint in Portland, I have tried a couple, but I find myself craving Assembly's pizza. Fluffy pillows of dough with stringy cheese, topped with crispy pepperoni. Hawaiian, meat lovers, etc. you can't go wrong with any of their toppings, really. Come enjoy pizza and the chill vibes, of the SE side! read more

The pizza was terrific. The customer service was lacking, and I really didn't appreciate it. They gave several paragraphs of explicit instructions on their website to pick up your pizza at the time designated. I followed those instructions to the T because we're still in a global pandemic, and I got extremely passive aggressive attitude when I called the store because it looked closed when I arrived and no one came out when I walked up. I've worked with the general public, and I know how impatient and rude people can be when they're hungry, and this wasn't the case. I was calling to make sure they were open and had received my order, and the girl who answered told me they were working on my food as fast as humanly possible, implying that I was being impatient, and called me a pet name, which is unnecessary and was honestly patronizing. I still enjoyed the pizza, but simple instructions to call when you arrive to let them know you're there would have been much easier. read more

Have been looking for a Portland place with authentic Detroit Pizza in Portland for 39 years. Sadly closest to date had been Little Caesar's (for real). Been here twice, once for lunch and once on a Wednesday at 7 PM. Pizza is very very close to the real deal; I stuck with the basic pepperoni. It's all about the crust-always get one with 4 slices/four corners-you don't want an orphan middle piece on an 8 slice pizza. The use of the faux Diego Rivera mural is brilliant-anyone from Detroit will feel instantly at home. Met the co-owner and brew master and my pal had a great conversation with him about brewing. Beer was a delivery vehicle for me to get to the pizza--I had a porter and it was just fine. (I'm not much of a beer snob) A bit noisy for me, but I'm getting up close to the "get out of my yard stage" age group anyway. On the other hand, I would've been happy to hear "Kick out the Jams" once in a while:) I'm picky but this place is highly, highly recommended. read more

This place is fantastic. I'm a pizza lover and anytime I can find a great Detroit style pizza I'm all about it. This place has amazing pizza, and apps. We got the bread sticks which had garlic butter and parmasean cheese. The pizza was buttery and crispy while also bring spongy. The amount of cheese on the pizza was perfect. I got the small meat lovers and for the size I loved it. My fiancée got the D with vegan cheese and loved it. The beer was great I got the golden, and the staff was so friendly this place is a must try for any pizza lover. read more

Just got dinner and some pints here with friends. If you're looking for tasty genuine Detroit-style pizza and the freshest, most drinkable pints of well crafted beer flavored beer, this is a great place. And it's affordable! Side bonus: no shrieking kids either, since it's 21+ at all times. We had the meat lovers pizza, the stout, the porter, the amber and the smash. All were great, not too heavy on the hops, very drinkable and a deal for five bucks a pint. The porter and stout were my favorites. And I'm told that a classic wheat beer is planned for the future. There's quart growler cans so you don't need to remember to bring your empty, too. Needless to say, we're pleased and we will be coming back again. read more

Pleasant and spacious bar featuring a nice variety of beers on tap and very good Detroit-style pizza. Detroit-style pizzas are rectangular, cut into squares, with a thick, crisp crust and your choice of toppings. Our group opted for the Popeye (spinach, feta cheese, and black olives) and the meat lovers (pepperoni, pork roll, salami, bacon, and Italian sausage). Tasty sauce, Really nice crisp crust. Decent beers. Good service and friendly atmosphere. Certainly worth a visit or two, particularly for the good pizza. read more

I'm a really big fan of this place. The beers are all pretty standard styles, but that's almost the charm of the place. With all the competition to make weird beers in Portland, it's nice to just have some of the classics, especially when they're done well. Also really liked the pizza. Beer and pizza? How can you go wrong? Only knock is the parking. Super slim one-way parking lot, but street parking options can be limited. read more

Food is expensive and takes a very long time. The staff are very disengaged. I stood at the register hoping to order while the gentleman behind the counter checked his phone and sipped on a soda for 5 minutes. He ultimately seemed really annoyed by any questions I had when I did order. Since their food takes so long to come out, I have tried multiple times to call in an order. I waited on hold for 45 minutes once and ultimately hung up. Ive never successfully been able to place an order over the phone. There is an option to order online, but the software isn't very functional and is missing lots of options. For example, they are advertising GF pizza now, but it isn't even an option on their online ordering system. The pizza is good, but the service is so bad that I don't go there anymore. read more

Stopped by to try a new place. Mario, the bartender, was super friendly and impressively attentive considering how busy it was. I felt like the beer was just okay. I tried four different beer styles but couldn't pick anything distinctive out of them. The chicken skewers were pretty tasty though and impressively juicy. The Detroit-style pizza looks really legit, so I plan to come back to check those out. read more

Food is delicious, tap list is wonderful but the service was sub par... Supreme pizza was one of the best things I have tasted, super flavorful, crispy & a perfect size. Love the big windows & open space! Also love that they separate the outside tables from smoking/non smoking, because I love being outside but not a fan of sitting in cigarette smoke. All A+ The service wasn't great, asked for red pepper for my pizza and it never came, took 20 minutes to order a beer, and even after requests from multiple people, they refused to turn on the outside heaters so we could enjoy our drinks out on the patio. read more

Let me start by saying the pizza here is good. But, as a table of six, we waited for over an hour and a half to receive two simple pies. I would understand if the restaurant was packed... but we were one of two tables in there. They prioritize every to-go order ahead of people that actually dine in to support their business. I watched close to 10 pizzas leave the pickup spot while we waited patiently. Our server came by one time and had nothing to report. Typical portland BS. This needs to change across the board. Most servers expect a minimum tip of at least 20% now and I see a lot of them hardly involving themselves at all anymore. Working less and making more? Don't bother dining in. Just order online. It seems to be what Assembly prefers anyways. read more

This place sells Detroit style pizza...fitting. Much like the motor city itself, they once produced a quality product. Sadly, the service is bottom of the barrel, and the food prep has gotten lazy. Tonight after a less than stellar customer service interaction, I got home to dig into my $33 focaccia bread only to find some blue plastic pieces melted into the cheese...probably from a bag of shredded mozzarella. Finally got someone to go with and have the pie here. Had heard and read about it, thought it would be a bit dense. But no, while thick, it's light and smooth chewing, I especially appreciate the cheesy of it, especially since the sauce--chunky, not long cooked--is on top. The toppings were quality and wouldn't have minded a little more. The beers here are well-define, cleanly made, nothing sparkles but everything's pretty good. Excellent, fluid service. Thought this place sold instructions to build Ikea furniture. I mean they might, but I didn't know how to order them. They have super delicious pizza. It's like Gourmet Totino's and I mean that in the most polite way possible. Their square pizza, whatever they call it, is supreme. I really wish my body agreed with the gluten but sometimes I just don't care. The owner looks like Hermès from Futurama, but with way more of a ghetto side. Really dig the omagee mural to Diego Rivera. Mario is incredible. I don't know why coach didn't put him in 4th. That guy moves like a star quarterback. His calves are like two stags mating. He is cut tighter than a Public schools art budget. If they don't find a black guy to play 007, they should make him whatever white boy they pick as his understudy. My favorite school assemblies were a toss up between the wrapping paper/chocolate bar fundraisers and the freaks with the bearing yoyo's. I never got student of the month until June because they probably felt sorry for me. June's awards were the only ones printed in Black and White to just further validate the stimulus of working with a handicap. I see it as saving the best for last. The wrapping paper fundraisers were amazing. I can only equate the experience to being high on oxycontin when I had bursitis in my knee. I would day dream of obtaining a lava lamp, or spy ear, or that stupid generic Tommy Hilfiger lanyard. When Trump is booted out of office, I can't wait to see his son do a yo-yo demo at a public school in that ridiculous generic MENSA track suit he's been rocking lately. I'd never heard of "Detroit" style pizza before so I knew I eventually had to check this place out. It's right near my house...even walkable so that will be a dangerous thing for me but totally worth it. The whole atmosphere is very inviting, the staff is super friendly, and the murals are very well done and beautiful. I actually got to order at my table because I think they were a little bit slower and had plenty of staff to accommodate but usually you order at the bar. I had the Popeyes pizza, which was absolutely delicious...the crust was incredible...probably the best I've ever had. Their kölsch was awesome too. Also, their bathroom doors are a must see, trust me, you'll love it. I'll be back next time to try some more of the appetizers, and maybe a sandwich along with a slice of pizza; pinball will also be on the agenda. So glad they're in my neighborhood! VERY DISAPPOINTED. VERY UNWELCOMING. I had been curious for some time now to find out what Detroit style pizza at Assembly Brewing is all about. Place looks rad, service not at all. Walked in with a friend as she is visiting; she asked for a food menu, server at the bar said "they're everywhere." We looked around, and there were not any menus in plain sight. He could have easily handed one without the douche remark. We went ahead and ordered our pizza, then my friend asked if they have a double IPA, and he went off saying how "we are trying to bring the hop down.." with such a jerk snob mood. Didn't expect the bar tender to come off very standoffish. My friend had the amber, which the bartender with the wavy, dark, short hair, stocky, wearing a gray taxi cap on working on Sunday 5/05/19 at 21:00 recommend with no enthusiasm at all or certain what he was suggesting. Asked if we could get the pizza in a box. His response was "we serve it on a dish, and we don't give a box out until you're ready." It's not difficult to say yes. Instead all we got were with unnecessary attitude. He didn't want to bring us plates. Later on the Busser, a young thin blonde was telling other customers that also sat outside how this is not the place to go to get a double IPA, if someone wants a double IPA they can go to the liquor store. Which is true, but why call yourself a brewery if you can't provide something customers might want. Anyone can also buy an amber at a liquor store. 14" Hawaiian pizza, was good. It was a deep dish preparation. Crispy edges. We lost our appetite especially when we felt rushed. We only had a slice each. I wouldn't come back, rather go to MOD Pizza. read more

First time, server forgot to turn in our order, he admitted it to us, which we appreciated, had an extra beer while we waited, food came out it was great manager checked in we were fine, things happen. Came back for a second time, after ten minutes of waiting, had to flag down a server who had walked past us several times and helped other people who came in after us, we placed an order for a pizza, an appetizer and a beer each. We never saw her again and no one checkd back, food dropped and done. We literally waited for 15 minutes with empty dishes and glasses and flagged someone down to run our card, that is after our server walked past out table literally 5 times with my husband having an empty class....it was like we were invisible. At their prices you could get the actual good pizza in Portland like Kens or Scotties. Their pizza is soggy and their salads are boring.

We had the Supreme Pizza 1/2 with olives an 1/2 without. Perfect pizza! Crispy on the bottom with lots of toppings. Heavy on the cheese, perfect for me but a bit heavy for my husband. They have three pinball machines, that are in good shape. read more
