Love this place for breakfast or brunch. Located on Main Street, there is lots of parking available around including street parking, lot parking, and ramp parking. The breakfast is super good here. I had their waffle with fruit. It was nice and fluffy and the fruit was very fresh. My friend had gotten the eggs Benedict and she really loved it! I also had the Carmel coffee cake which I would get again. It was dense, but the Carmel worked so well with it. This is definitely the highlight of the meal! The normal menu is good too, but if you are coming here, the brunch is truly the best. If you have the chance, sit outside on the patio. Nothing beats having brunch by the river! The most cozy spot in St Anthony! I enjoyed lunch here with a friend and we indulged in some quiche off the weekend brunch menu. The quiche was ridiculously good...we were impressed by the fluffy egg base topped with a hearty layer of spinach. What I love about Aster is the cozy charm of the space. It is a very old space and it's history is honored with exposed beams and brick walls and a beautiful old wood bar. The service was also great. Experience here wasnt the best. Our wait was about 40 minutes for the patio which is standard for the area. A friend and I from our group ordered the brisket tacos. Our waitress came by and gave us complimentary shots about 20 minutes later, "due to the wait". Everyone else got their food before our tacos came out, which leads me to believe our waitress knew it was gonna be a while. Took a bite into the tacos and immediately knew that it was neither brisket nor meat. When i notified my waitress it wasn't meat she checked with the kitchen and then said, "yeah they weren't planning on charging you but just wanted to feed you something due to the long wait". I strongly believe they gave us the vegan option and had hoped we wouldn't notice. I would have preferred she had just told us. Won't be back here. read more

Best patio in town. If all you remember of Main Street is the less-than-savory character of Main Street way back when, get ready for a very special time at Aster. I stop by on bike rides and when I want to go someplace special. Everything is great and I especially recommend the brisket tacos with a glass of the cider du jour. Or a craft brew--they have plenty. The flatbreads are wonderful--also with cider or a brew. Indoors is dim and very private feeling and fine for wintertime, but patio or sidewalk is best. Outdoors has a sensational river view, day or night. If you don't get lucky finding a spot on Main St, best parking is the 2nd St city ramp a short, sheltered tunnel walk away. read more

Visited MN for the first time and learned it is not a foodie city. It'll make you work for those meals. Driving around one morning in the cold and rain without having pre-planned a reservation we happened on this cute sidewalk cafe. They had a very deliberate look to them. Walked into a dimly lit space filled with people, live music and the smell of cinnamon. We sat down and ordered brunch items all around. The vibe was comfortable and comforting. We took a risk and were rewarded with good service, kind smiles and decently flavored food. Not to mention oortaiins are large for a good price. Would definitely bust again. read more

It is a great location right on Main Street with beautiful brick roads, awesome paths for walking, and unique old buildings, perfect for tourists and locals alike. To be honest, the brunch was not memorable. Your typically brunch set up, but on a beautiful and sunny patio. The concert venue within Aster Cafe is phenomenal. Aster Cafe has the dubious distinction of providing me with the worst dining experience I can remember. It was by accident we wound up stepping in to the Aster Cafe on June 1, 2013, but it will never happen again. The service was, well, let's not use the word "service" as that would indicate we were "served." Our waitress took our beer orders after leaving us to wait for five minutes. She came back some five minutes later to tell us one of the two beers we ordered was tapped out. The order was changed and we indicated we'd like to order our lunch. Half-way through our order we were informed the only menu they were serving was brunch. Fine. She goes to get our beers and will return to give us a moment to peruse the brunch menu. Five minutes. Ten minutes. At fifteen minutes I asked the hostess for our beers. She brought them. I asked if they are typically partially empty and received a response of "do you want a new pour?" (they'd clearly been sitting in the window long enough for the head on the beer to sink two inches). I demurred, worried it would require 30 minutes to get a new beer. After twenty minutes of not being approached by our server, I asked the hostess if we could sit in at the bar and have our drinks transferred. She offered to have a check come to our table, and I said a transfer would be fine so we could actually Order. The transfer never happened.... Dear god, I am getting PTSD from writing this... Let me get to the point. The food is disgusting. The eggs are spongy and pre-fab. The mornay sauce is gluey. The staff is inattentive at best. Distracted, slow and potentially uninformed about the menu. I have never had such a poor experience in dining as an adult. read more

This is one of those rare places where you can grab a pastry to-go, hear live music, have a drink after work, spend a couple hours on your laptop, have brunch with your mom... basically anything you'd ever want to do at a restaurant/cafe/bar/bakery. It's lovely. I had been to Aster Cafe for drinks before, but I was waiting to write a review until I had a more well-rounded experience. I got my wish when I brought my co-workers here for some lunch and laptop time before the big Yelp event yesterday (the Frostbite Ball). Last summer, I decided this was one of the best outdoor seating areas in the city... nay, the world. How can anyone be expected to compete with a tree-shaded, brick-laden patio smack dab on the banks of the mighty Mississippi? Oh, and it has a fire pit. No contest. Aster's insides have a complementary vibe. It has the feel of a homey, eclectic lodge in the woods. I love the big "Aster" sign on the wall and the huge light fixtures behind the bar that look like they belong in an Irish castle. I'm sure it is a fantastic place to watch live music and I can't wait to come back and check it out at night. So, it's clear the atmosphere is near-perfect. But what about the rest? The food is simple, but so satisfying. I truly appreciate their chef's use of cheese. Many things on the menu came with blue cheese, goat cheese or brie... the holy trinity of soft cheeses. They also have a host of cheese plates on the menu. I ordered the brie, artichoke, caramelized onion baguette sandwich and I was glad I did. The sliced bread 'wiches my co-workers ordered didn't look half as appetizing. I've also had some great sweet-savory flatbreads and wonderful quiche. Aster is known for their tea-infused cocktails, so I tried the tea-infused Jameson and ginger beer last summer and was impressed (give me whiskey and I'm a happy girl). They infuse their own liquor with the tea, so there are some interesting combos. I also downed my cappuccino yesterday, so it seems they do coffee just as well! read more

We were in town for a wedding to be held entirely at the Aster Cafe. I had no idea the what's or where's - only the who's and when's. We didn't know the specific location but it is fairly easy to find once you get acclimated to the area and find a spot to park (there is plenty of parking in the area - out of towners or those traveling into the area need not worry!!!). First impression is definitely a wow. Great location along the river and an amazing view of the MSP skyline. Super cool neighborhood/community vibe and lots of action in the area. Although it may not be true, it seems as though the City and the community have gotten together and invested some time and money into making it a spot that supports businesses and lifestyles. Some may take this the wrong way (I mean the following in a good way) but it has a certain feeling of "acceptable gentrification"... Very cool vibe at Aster Cafe. Hip, trendy and fashionable but not too much - you won't be bombarded by constant White Rabbits or Arcade Fire music nor feel the need to grow an instant beard. Your jeans will be just fine here - no need for the skinny corduroy's to get a table or seat at the bar. With all of that said, the environment is fantastic both inside and out. Although we were there for a wedding I noticed the seating areas and I couldn't find a bad spot. Both the "sit inside" and "sit outside" crowd will be very happy here! We got to enjoy dedicated inside and outside spaces for the wedding and I was impressed. Rustic and warm - the inside space was perfect for a smaller (less than 100) wedding reception. The service was top notch - TOP NOTCH! Yes, we were getting wedding service but it seemed as though everyone there for dinner or drinks was getting the same level of attention. No major waits (although the place was packed). For the wedding, the staff was friendly, efficient and made it a point to be seen but not in the way. If anything was needed, a request was made and they were on it. If service is a top priority for your wedding venue (which it should be) Aster Cafe delivers 100%! I hate to make this comparison, but the "country club" wedding service staff could learn a lot from what Aster Cafe delivers! The food also exceeded expectations. Hors d'oeuvres served during cocktails between the ceremony and dinner were fantastic - herbed chicken skewers, tenderloin chimichurri, cocktail shrimp skewers and tomato/mozzarella skewers with balsamic. These were FANTASTIC. Home run small bites that I believe became a highlight. The wedding couple made a great choice in doing this and was a PERFECT way to keep the party going. Very impressive food and service. Dinner was also fantastic. It became very clear that Aster Cafe takes their food prep, presentation and quality seriously. You know how the food always becomes a top of conversation about "the wedding"? Well, this one left everyone talking about how great it was. Yes, we're all there because marriage is what brought us together that day (Princess Bride???) but the food was fan - tas - tic! Well done, Aster Cafe! After dinner and while the dance floor was open, they also brought up three different (and huge) flat breads to snack on. They were big, full of flavor and made everyone happy. Another great decision! Aster Cafe was an amazing wedding venue and hit a hole in one, bulls-eye and ace from start to finish. The two stars that I AM giving are for our server, the ambience, and the beer selection. I think Aster isn't sure if it wants to be a bar, a music club, a restaurant, and unfortunately, they were a wet blanket on my friend's 50th birthday party. We had reserved the section in the back of the bar to celebrate. I noticed early that the dinner patrons were annoyed at how loud we were (there were about 20 of us) and once the band started playing we were annoying the people there to listen to the music, but we couldn't really hear each other over the music, so we took it outside. On the way out, I bought a scotch for the birthday boy. Next thing I know, the manager comes over, hands the shot back to me and said my friend couldn't have it. I asked why - she responded he had had enough to drink. Frankly, he was tipsy, but he was in control and had a ride. But I didn't push the issue to avoid a scene. But to be cut off on your 50th birthday party without even a warning! Sheesh! read more

I think I should have liked this much more than I did. The elements were there for a successful evening: cool location, fantastic views, live music, interesting menu, good company... but the evening never really got off the ground. It seems that most everything (save for the company) was having an off-night. Location: what a cool neighborhood! With the cobblestones, cool shops and impressive condo buildings, I can understand why so many people choose to hang out here. Unfortunately, the night we were here, parking was an issue (really? at 9 pm? still paying for parking? highway robbery) and just finding a place to alight took a bit more time and effort than I would have thought necessary given the lateness of the day. Fantastic Views: Being up on a hill at night with the world below is quite the recipe for enchantment. Truly, I have nothing to say that's Aster Cafe's fault. The night we were there the bugs were a'bitin' but when you're the land of [a number of lakes above 10 but really? 10k?], that's to be expected. Still, take the bugs away and you have incredible views of the city that Prince built. Live Music: I know the Aster is known for live music but the night we were there? Caterwauling. Of cats. In heat. And, pissed off. Horrid. It was like that little girl from the Hyundai commercials and Youtube (yep, I am going there) grew up, never had anyone tell her that she couldn't sing, got a guitar and proceeded to make the world pay. Aurally. Interesting menu: we'd had dinner (sort of) and were here for a nightcap of cheese and wine. The wine was fine but the cheese offerings were a bit disappointing. The plates were skimpy and the presentation was sad. Yes, I get it. You're paying for cheese. On a plate. This doesn't mean that the plate has to look like a bit of cheese on a plate. Am I making any sense here? Within a few mouse bites, the cheese was gone (the bread was an afterthought, even at the beginning) and I was left wondering what just happened. At $12 for 3 cheeses, you won't break the bank, but I doubt your palate will be sated. Good company: the only true slam dunk of the evening but even as we got a conversation on, our waitress did her best to add some hapless elements to the evening. Forgotten beverage. Incorrect wine. Lack of knowledge about the menu offerings. AWOL for stretches at a time. Waited so long for the bill, I assumed our nightcap was free. She was a very sweet person but was either having a very off night or waitressing is just not her bag. So, Aster Cafe, I came expecting great things and... didn't really see them. It's warm, the Hot Toddies are great, and they still have that fantastic white bean dip. Check out the schedule of events online before heading over though, they have live music frequently (an awesome string band a couple of weeks ago) and other cool events like Books & Bars. I had a wonderful Happy Hour at Aster this past Friday. It was hot as hell, but my friend and I were soaking up the sun so we chose to sit on the patio. Because we opted to be in the sun, we were seated immediately. Our service wasn't insanely fast, but it was attentive and thoughtful - the patio was full and it was busy. My gal pal and I each ordered the Apple Bacon Bleu flatbread ($12 on HH) and the Sangria ($6 on HH). Taps are also $5 on HH, which we took advantage of as well. The flatbread was good - it has salt, fat but it's REALLY missing acid. The apples are so sweet, I wish there had been more bleu cheese or balsamic on it. We ended up dipping it in the hot sauce that was on the table to "spice things up" with the flavor profile. Sangria was tasty, and I wish I had brought my reusable straw to sip it faster! The Aster Cafe happened to be one of my top choices for wedding venues, although they were a little expensive for the amount of people I had so I didn't choose it but if more affordable I definitely would have. I was in the neighborhood this weekend and stopped here for brunch, one of the last nice weekends to enjoy their patio seating. It's gorgeous, I love everything about St. Anthony Main especially the cobblestone streets which would have made amazing wedding or engagement photos :) On to the food.. Pricing is average to me for this type of restaurant/cafe..I don't think it's overpriced. The flatbread is really good and I also had the turkey avocado sandwich. The patio has en European feeling that makes it a great place to spend a summer afternoon. Me and my husband visited a Thursday night (7 pm) and had to wait 1 hour for the table, the good thing is that the area is great for walking so you can wonder around while you wait ( if you are hungry or in a hurry this might not be a good place). Casual, with a guitar player on the background and excellent service. I was expecting better food and drinks quality. The menu has a lot of vegetarian options. We ordered avocado toast, tuna poke, chocolate mousse dessert, sangria and a special spritz ( dont remember the name). The Sangria and avocado toast were amazing.. I highly recommend to order this. The spritz and chocolate mousse was Ok ( I wouldn't order it next time but they were good). The tuna poke was not good at all... too simple and too salty... I definitely wont order that dish again! Aster Cafe has one of the best patios in town. Located on St. Anthony Main, the patio is quiet and surrounded by trees, with a great view of the Mississippi and downtown. Besides the awesome patio, the food is pretty tasty. I went to Aster Cafe for lunch on a sunny day and ordered their pear, chevre, roasted onion and spinach flatbread pizza. This was a nice, light lunch dish, but wasn't overly filling. I liked how light the toppings were and the fact that it wasn't at all greasy. The caramelized onions and pear were sweet and complimented the musty chevre. The crust of this flatbread was more like a cracker than your typical pizza crust. My dining companion ordered the tomato, mozzarella, basil and ciabatta salad. She said the salad was great and she really liked the light, balsamic dressing. Overall, Aster is a great lunch spot. The only reason I am giving Aster 2 stars instead of 1 is the fact that their patio space is great! Spacious and cozy with twinkling lights...but oh my goodness...the food and drinks were such a major disappointment. There was not a single thing ordered that didn't have some sort of issue. We ordered prosecco and what we got was white wine in a white wine glass. The server noticed this after serving us and came back a few minutes later and asked if that was correct and we said no but it was ok and we didn't want to have it thrown out, we were still charged for this drink and not even given the correct one. We ordered the salumi trio. The menu said it came with crackers and crostini. We basically got a plate of fatty ham and salami, no crackers. And last but not least...dessert. The "aster chocolate mousse" it was a joke! It came in a Sunday glass and had a big air bubble underneath! The glass was less than half full with an inch of mousse and a huge air bubble beneath it! I have no idea who would let this leave the kitchen and be served! $9.50 for that?! In conclusion, if you are just looking for drinks that may or may not be correct, but an awesome patio, Aster would fulfill that need. But for good and reasonably priced food? You will have to venture elsewhere down Main Street. read more

The building is a classic, the area is a wonderful date night, river walk local and I've wanted to try the food here for ages. To bad I didn't hold out and wait, I'd still want to try it! To start with, while sitting at the bar watching 3 bartenders and 2 porters rushing around the bar service was horrible! I couldn't believe that someone could pass by so many times in half and hour and not pay any attention to their customers. After getting a drink, finally....getting a menu, finally...and ordering the food I ordered was a huge disappointment! When you order the Shrimp Ceviche and it was a mistake. First starters it was served on a thick ribbed piece of lettuce that wasn't large enough to house it. The large vein made for a bitter lettuce which in a way was the only thing that had flavor. The rest of it was tasteless and bland. Now Ceviche should be clean and fresh but this was just plain old super bland. I've only stopped in for dessert after a movie at the St. Anthony Main theater so my review is of that visit. It was a perfect summer night, full moon and all, when my friend and I scrolled into Aster Cafe. The open doors and windows letting the summer air and street noise flow in and dimly lit setting was just right for a sweet treat. I decided on the Carrot Cake over the Lemon Pie at the barista's suggestion and my friend had the Flourless Chocolate Torte with Berries. The Carrot was at first overwhelming with the amount of honey drizzled on it but the rich yet light whip cream on top made it worth it. It got even better as I had it for leftovers the next day and I couldn't get over how moist it stayed. On the other hand, my friend's Chocolate Torte left something to be desired. It was considerably dry for a flourless cake and small even for $5, sorta like a large nugget or hockey puck.Though I do believe Aster's deserves a second visit for a full review. read more

Bloody Marys are made with a pepper infused vodka, and they are AWESOME. All the liquors at the Aster are infused, so their cocktails are pretty great. The flatbreads are typical New American fare, but they don't skimp on the pricier ingredients like other places do (the pear and prosciutto is my fave). Their entrees and sammies I've tried were all good, but the real reason to frequent this place is if you're a coffee snob or a beer enthusiast. KWAK, Founders, Fulton, Furthermore, among other great, uncommon taps are to be found. Their happy hour is FREAKING AMAZING and this place has quickly become my favorite in Northeast, especially when I consider their great ambiance, music, etc. I'm not much for one-guy-on-a-guitar singing his introspective heart out, but I hear electronic may soon be in the works. AND they've got a happy hour now that will blow your mind (taps, wine, flatbreads and cheese plates), but even at full price, this place is worth every penny. PS- Some of you "yelpers" make me sick. Nice venue to hear live music and enjoy drinks & beer. Our server was very attentive. Decent selection of local beers. While we didn't eat any food the plates served to others at least looked good. During the summer they have an outdoor venue that overlooks the Mississippi River. The two reasons for only 4 stars: Lack of meaningful security of any kind. Thankfully patrons, including an off duty police officer, intervened in a situation that could have gotten very, very ugly. No bathrooms within the club. You must leave the venue and walk down a desolate long hallway and make a turn to get to the facilities. There is no security and women feel uncomfortable about this hike to the bathroom. They should get a security guard to ensure bathroom safety (and that people wash their hands after voiding) read more

Love this area in general and super excited that this cute restaurant has a nice, big, open patio (that allows dogs!). Right by the riverside, its perfect for enjoying the warmer days and people watching. They allow reservations inside but not on the patio FYI. However, our group was seated pretty quickly at a table outside for dinner. They offer the standard assortment of drinks- would have liked a few more wine options but I was definitely happy with the Tempranillo that I got. I think their menu is difficult to categorize and interesting in that they offer a range of unique dishes that don't necessarily fit one theme. It was kind of hard to decide what to order but I was happy that they were able to accommodate me when I asked for the margherita pizza with bacon added. Loved the flaky crust and combination of fresh tomatoes with the salty bacon though would have liked a little more cheese on top :) Our waitress was great! My mom is notoriously particular when it comes to eating out and when she mentioned that her dessert didn't have enough ice cream, she brought out a complimentary bowl for her. I went to the Aster Cafe for breakfast on the Fifth of July -- yeah the day after the fireworks. You'd never know that throngs of people had watched pyrotechnics explode just a few yards away just 12 hours before. It was a perfect morning: sunny, calm, and quiet since everyone was probably sleeping off the previous night's party. My time at the Aster was as perfect as the summer morning. I had the waffle with berries and creme fraiche, and my pal had the egg sandwich. I loved mine, and he loved his. Both were about $7, which is not bad for the quality. His would have been nice with a few berries or melon slices on the side. The service was attentive -- there were maybe five people in the whole place. The waitress and reminisced with some folks across the patio who were from her old Northeast neighborhood. The whole experience had a very slow and comfortable feel. With the view of the river and skyline, the great food, and pleasant atmosphere, I'll be back and hope future visits are as great as the first. I'd suggest a Mimosa or Bellini on the menu for the brunch crowd to give the morning that extra punch. read more

I have been to Aster many times; it's a solid spot with a patio and a Bloody Mary that's strong and spicy. Most recently I stopped by on a beautiful, busy Saturday afternoon and had to wait about 20 min to be seated in a shaded spot on the patio; we enjoyed diet Coke's from the bar while waiting outside for our table. Our server was attentive but not overly so. The vegan bahn mi was just ok... will try something else next time. Will be back again for the location, atmosphere, and Bloody Mary. read more

Voted number one place people go on for first dates... Gorgeous interior and exterior. Right along the banks, with a city scape view out of the window. This place is so romantic. I suggest coming for brunch but be sure to make reservations. They have a Americana folk string band every Saturday morning. It's a great time! Come for an amazing buzz filled Irish cream and stay longer for their bloody Marys. Prices are very reasonable but the view is priceless. The bartenders and servers know their food... Our friends brought us to this cute little quaint restaurant. It's a good place for a date night that isn't super fancy. I ordered the curry chicken salad and it was great mix of flavors, not overly powerful curry spices. I don't remember what everyone else got but they had a few different cuisines on the menu to cater to the different palates. I think they change their menu seasonally so you can always go back and try something new. Later on weekend evenings they usually have live music but you have to pay cover to stay and listen. read more

If you haven't been, then you are truly missing out on one of the Twin Cities best little cafes. This place has it all! Great local music (small venue is intimate and more enjoyable), nice ambience (warm and comfortable is both sophisticated yet casual), good food (inventive yet approachable and full of flavor!), and of course great cocktails (they have really upped their game here and how). I'm normally not into hot cocktails but their Seelbach Toddy is a game changer! I could easily make a night of just those and soup! Amazing creative comfort food. Honestly, it is places like this that make the Twin Cities such a great place to live. I've been around and good intimate music venues are hard to find...and we have many of them here. Aster Cafe - New American Near Me - Minneapolis, Minnesota

This was our first time at the Aster Cafe but we knew from friends that we would like it. A perfect summer afternoon by the Mississippi River, lots of shade from the umbrellas and trees and an attentive wait person all made this a wonderful lunch date. I ordered the Thai Street Noodles and they were perfect! Lots of fresh veggies, plenty of spice and a sauce that was light yet full of flavor. I will definitely order this again! My husband ordered from the brunch menu, the bagel and lox. While the lox was delicious, it was missing some of the classic additions on this type of sandwich. In particular were the lack of red onions and tomatoes. Add these and our meal was oerfect. We will be back. read more

The Aster Cafe is one of my go to places when I want a great experience and good food. They have an amazing outdoor seating area that overlooks downtown Minneapolis and the Mississippi river. The location is on one of the oldest blocks of the city, with a park across the beautiful cobblestone street. They also have an outdoor space that can be rented for events such as weddings. Our dining experience at the Aster Cafe was wonderful! We were in Minneapolis, just visiting for the weekend, and were hoping to make it to Aster for their amazing brunch (reviews we heard from several Minneapolis natives), but decided dinner was the next best option. And our dinner experience was probably our best dining experience of the entire weekend! While Aster's outdoor patio is cute and gives you an amazing view of the city, it was sooooo busy, so we opted to sit inside to take advantage of the air conditioning and to soak in the exposed brick and wood walls that lines the inside of the Aster Cafe bar and restaurant. Our waitress was amazing and had some really great recommendations for us and was there at a moment's notice to fill our waters and sodas. Our table's orders consisted of: Bibimbapp with Koran Barbecue, Chicken Shawarma Wrap on Naan bread, and the Chef's Special Pizza (with toppings that included: pesto, chicken, alfredo sauce, manchego cheese, and some peas). AND EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING. The Bibimbapp and Pizza were probably two of the most delicious food items that I have ever eaten in my life. After food was devoured, we decided to stay and enjoy some of the live music that began. We were so glad that we did. The sun was starting to set over the skyline of the city so it was a beautiful view, our stomachs were full, and the band was SO talented. We left with a TERRIFIC dining experience and would recommend Aster Cafe to anyone and everyone! read more
