I was not entirely impressed by Aster Hall last weekend, and it's partly my fault b/c I didn't know how it worked going in. Unlike many food halls, you go to a common kiosk and order your food there. I didn't think the kiosk was completely user friendly and we ended up exiting our whole order b/c we didn't see that you had to scroll to another restaurant. The key pad was also very sensitive and we had to select options multiple times before it recognized our order. For a non computer friendly user, this will be a bit difficult. There are two people there to help you, but they tend to get busy. Another item that was probably going to be annoying for some is that there only appeared to be 8 kiosk computers. In a rush time, that will be long lines in my opinion, and I'm not sure if you could order ahead if you're local. In terms of the food, I got the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl from Boardwalk Sea Company. I liked the chowder, but it was mostly bread and not much chowder. The ratio between the two was just not there. My husband got the Brisket Sandwich from Green Streets, and was not impressed. The atmosphere is really airy and pretty, but lacking on signs that indicate there is upstairs seating. We didn't see that until the end. Overall - not a bad place and I will give them another try when I'm in the area, but it's not some place I would rush to go to. read more

We wanted something quick and near our hotel before we started our day. This was definitely convenient and cool to check out! Food: I ordered the truffle noodles with an added meatball. The noodles weren't bad considering it's kind of fast food. I actually could taste the truffle. However it was kind of cold which was disappointing. The meatball was really small and not worth however. Service: You self service and order through the screen displays. Then you go to the counter areas to pick up your food. This place sucks. Food is over $20 per person, and is food court quality...not "luxurious" like this "restaurant" coalition claims. Fried Chicken Sandwich was over-cooked, burnt, and breading falling off. Garlic-aoli was saltier than the ocean. Water was overpriced, and everything was wrapped in crappy elementary school lunch room tinfoil or plastic. Avoid! Convenient location should not take away from the fact there are actually good restaurants a block away. PASS. read more

Working a mere block away, I find myself here often, and mostly for the ramen. The broth has declined in quality in just a few months (it no longer leaves that sticky, collagenous film on your lips so they're not simmering it as long), but even so it beats out any other ramen east and north of Ramen Takeya. The noodles retain great chew, the pork belly melts in your mouth and usually has an unusually high meat-to-fat ratio, and the soft-boiled egg is perfectly cooked, although I wish they would marinate it in soy for extra flavor. Also noteworthy is anything coming out of The Rotisserie, especially the spicy fried chicken sandwich with waffle fries, and Green Street Smoked Meats' BBQ sandwiches. Avoid the sad attempts at Italian sub sandwiches, as well as the chalky abominations they try to pass off as tacos. I haven't tried Small Cheval yet, mostly because I still need to enjoy a real Au/Small Cheval burger to compare it to. read more

Great collection of restaurants here in a beautiful and spacious area. After some food shopping, this is an amazing place to retreat to for some good eats! The cafeteria style has lots of seating and there are IPads for you to order the food so there is little to no human interaction, sometimes you just need that! The iPads aren't very sensitive so you made have to press a few times to get the desired action. Ordered the Cheeseburger from Small Cheval, Shoyu Ramen from Ginza, and the Chopped Brisket Sandwich from Green Street. The cheeseburger from Small Cheval will definitely hit the spot if you're craving a good burger. Having already been the to actual Au Cheval before, this location is comparable, but does lack that hot griddle flavor! Something about it just didn't make it taste as mind blowing as at the Au Cheval. The Ramen from Ginza was underwhelming. The broth really just tasted like seasoned water. The viscosity of the soup was like water. The noodles were a high point though, very good texture. The pork slices were also tender and good. I would skip on this. The Chopped Brisket Sandwich was alright. It came with a good amount of meat, but some parts even with sauce were quite dry and tough. The food court at aster hall is great! Good quality selection and not super expensive either. However, the best thing about this place is the bar! Literally EVERYONE working there is AMAZING. That goes from the bartenders like, Almicar, Vanessa, Christian, etc. all the way to the bussers like Pablo, etc. it's a beautiful space but the bartenders and employees do such an impressive job that it makes me want to come back. This was inside the mall. You order everything on a Kiosk it had Mexican, seafood, Italian, Asian and American. After you order the food you pick it up at the window of each restaurant. We enjoyed in this order the lobster Mac, elotes, then the Nashville fried chicken. The Nashville hot Needed more spice if it did it would have been perfect! Hands down, this is the coolest, most modern food court I've ever been to. Aster Hall, you're a beauty! When I think "food court" I usually think of sticky tables, fried food, and chains like Panda Express or S'barro. But every restaurant window at Aster Hall is trendy, creative, and nothing like traditional food court food. You order on a kiosk (think McDonald's but even sleeker) and can scroll through photos, prices, and nutritional facts for all items, by restaurant! Best of all: you can even filter the menu options by clicking on an allergen! So 2019, and I love it. When you're done ordering, a receipt tells you your order number, and each food window has a screen displaying the order numbers as either "preparing" or "ready." I ordered parmesan truffle fries and one chicken tinga taco, and both were AMAZING! The fries were honestly too big for one person, but I still ate them all, and the truffle flavor was on point. The chicken tinga taco was perfectly flavorful and sauced. Something I didn't know before coming here: while all the different restaurants have their own labeled counters, everyone working on the food all seems to be employed by the same company. In a traditional food court, each employee is separate. Here, they're all dressed the same, talking with each other, and working together on orders. Kind of a cool concept! read more

Not exactly the clearest layout of a food hall, but once you figure out that the kiosks on both sides offer food from each of the vendors, it's quite neat and modern. It's very beautiful and elegant inside; bright and open. They have lots and lots of seating, even a lounge upstairs. There's a variety of food from Chicago favorites. I highly recommend Small Cheval. This is what 900 Mich shops were missing and now it's here. Ladies and gents, Hogsalt has done it yet again. All these "vaults" at Aster Hall are like the yummiest, most high-quality, reasonably priced foods you can ever get. My dad had the amazing burger from Small Cheval and I had a spicy chicken sandwich from The Rotisserie with waffle fries. It's just so top-notch. I've come to expect lots from Hogsalt, and it would have been really easy for them to kinda give it half an effort and rely on their reputation to bring in droves of people. A new food hall not too far from Water Tower Place and shopping on Michigan Ave. Make sure to come through the main entrance otherwise it can be difficult to get to 5th floor where food hall is. Very high tech: you order your food from a kiosks that has the list of available restaurants and then pick the food up from a "vault" (specific corner of the floor). Service was very efficient and fast. I had Lobster Mac N Cheese from Boardwalk. Decently cheesy but a bit too much liquid and could have use a bit more bay seasoning for lobster chunks. In terms of portion it was on the smaller side, so if you are a grown adult like me, ask for bread (for free) or a side. The decor and design of the food court however is beautiful. Definitely recommend for your next lunch hour if you are in River North, Streeterville, or downtown! read more

I stopped by Aster Hall for the first time after doing some shopping in the area earlier this week. Aster Hall is home to 14 different restaurant "stations" including Small Cheval, Green Street Smoked Meets and many more. You order at a kiosk and can get whatever you want from any combination of stations, and then you pick up your food from the given station when your number is called. It's easy to make customization to menu items such as removing or adding condiments and sides. They have just about everything to offer from coffee to wine, ramen, sushi, BBQ, salads, burgers, tacos, pasta, pizza and more. They also have a grab and go section with a salad bar, soup, pastries and pre-made, pre-wrapped items. I went with a pollo de tinga taco from Al Pastor Tacos and the chicken dumplings from Lost Lily's. All the food was hot, tasty and the wait time was minimal. I was there right after 11am, when most stations open, and it was pretty quiet but I'm sure it gets busier later in the day. The space is light, airy, and clean. Something I couldn't find was a recycling bin for aluminum cans and glass (but maybe I just wasn't looking in the right spot?). It would be a good spot to work (you might want headphone if it gets busy), grab coffee or lunch or even drinks after work. I was only on the 5th floor, but there is additional seating on the 6th floor and it looks like it is a more upscale vibe with wait staff. First off it should be clear this is a mall food court. But it's a really good food court! I ordered at the kiosk. I wish I had known about the study area upstairs. It's only open Thursday- Sunday. You can order up there. If it's open go up there! It's such a nice space. You can order down below and eat up there, or you can order stuff up there.I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and a glass of wine. It was lovely. A different type of food hall than I have visited before. They have 8-10 businesses that offer a very limited menu. You order on a self serve computer and pay there (cc only). Your receipt then tells you which "Vault" you visit to pick up your items. If you order from two places you have to wait at two different windows. It wasn't exceptionally busy when I was there but service could've been faster. The set up of the condiment station also causes a traffic jam. My food (Detroit Style Pizza and Parm fries) was ok to good. This would be a nice lunch spot if I worked in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. I would be interested to see how busy it does get for the lunch rush. There is plenty of seating between the two floors. read more

This place is pretty cool. I was here recently for lunch at Small Cheval. When you walk in the building, the elevators are to the left. It is on the 6th floor. This was my first time here so the kiosks were an adjustment and a little slow to change screens at times. There is an attendant, though he was not always right near the kiosks. You pay at the kiosk and then go to the area that your vendor is in and wait for them to call your number. I love the screens on the ceiling with the contemporary images. I did not try the chocolate bar but it looks cools and the overall modern feel is definitely different. The seating options are good, and they even have some booths. I wanted to sit by the window but most of the tables said reserved on them, so I am guessing they rent out the space for small private parties. This is a good option for a group if you can't decide what to eat and the atmosphere is nice. I tried Small Cheval and a latte from 3 Greens Market downstairs (formerly called The Doughnut Vault) and both were good. read more

Definitely a nice food hall with a really easy way to order with screens where you pay by card. They have a variety of foods like southern food, Mexican food, and Asian food. The attendants at the ordering station are very friendly and helpful. It is a very nice and clean hall. The prices are reasonable especially at Al Pastor Tacos No. 2 which is where I ate both times I ate at Aster Hall. I had the chicken tinga tacos which were only $2.95 each and I added avocado with it which had good flavor and was healthy. I really like how you indicate your food allergy in the ordering station which is really refreshing and helpful for me. Definitely a great place for a quick, cheap bite and to take a break from shopping inside the shopping mall it is in, the 900 North Michigan Shops and from outside shops. I love the concept of this place. I only had coffee, but the design is so charming and the technology is something way more places should adapt. This is a food hall concept where there are various stations serving different types of fare throughout the space. There are kiosks where you order and pay. Place your order via touch screen. 3. Pick up order when ready at respective numbered pickup area nearby order kiosks Seating area all around. Additional seating area upstairs. Hand washing stations in north and south side of food hall. **Only disappointment was at the ordering kiosks, the Customer Service girls were too busy gossiping among themselves that confused customers were wandering aimlessly. I had to keep interrupting their conversations to ask questions about the kiosk (we happened to get the kiosk with a technical glitch). The most luxurious-feeling food court I have ever been to ("food hall" is just a name for a high-end food court, right?). They have a very nice set of options, including Small Cheval, lots of seating, a fancy sink, sparkling water taps, and weird computerized art on the ceiling. There's something about eating a burger wrapped in foil while surrounded by marble and gold that felt jarring to me, but in objective terms it's a very luxurious food court. Been wanting to try the small cheval burger but didn't want to deal with the line, so was very excited when this opened up near work. The interior is beautiful, definitely worthy of the Michigan Ave address. There was a slight line but multiple giant ordering stations so it moved quickly. I liked how you can order from all the vaults. But you need to have some idea where they're located as you still have to pick up from individual vaults. Obviously small cheval is still super popular coz I waited about 30 min for my food, but it came out freshly made so no complaints. Prices are a bit high but hey, it's the Mag Mile. To sum this place up in one image: a futuristic take on Parisian gourmet food halls (think Galeries Lafayette, Le Bon Marché), albeit significantly smaller, featuring American and Chicago-specific cuisine. I give this place a lot of credit given there's nothing like it in Chicago. I am a huge fan of the existing Hogsalt company establishments, so I was thrilled to discover some of my favorite offerings--au cheval burgers and fries (with a giant pump of garlic aioli), green street smoked meats, and doughnut vault doughnuts--amidst a vast amount of new options--sushi, fried chicken, ramen, hot dogs, and pasta. The space itself is beautiful and super futuristic. You order via a touch screen and pay with credit card on your own (with assistants there to help!) then go to the windows of the restaurants you ordered from. There's ample seating both with high tops and booths on the bottom floor and tables and couches in the luxurious lounge upstairs. Food-wise: I had the Nashville fried chicken, which was not too spicy (thankfully for my low tolerance palate) and perfectly crispy. I was shocked at the large portion size too--four large thighs with ample meat on them! I also tried the pasta with vodka sauce. At first I was unenthused given the appearance, but the dish grew on me. The noodles were cooked al dente and seemed possibly homemade(?) with an ample dollop of creamy vodka sauce and melted mozzarella to complete the dish. Both dishes didn't WOW me (hence the 4 stars), but the prices were totally reasonable--about $8 for each! The dessert bar in the middle is tantalizing with French pastry filled glass cabinets featuring eclairs, macarons, mousses, tarts, croissants and more! I //not so easily// refrained from having dessert on this visit, but I would for sure go back to try more of Aster Hall's new dishes! Food halls are great for a nice lunch with variety. On this specific day, we ordered a few dishes from a variety of the vendors and enjoyed the beautiful decor and architecture of the place inside the Michigan shopping area. We ordered a coffee and green juice from the juice bar and enjoyed this to start while we waited for the rest of our food. There is a vast amount of seating on two different floors as well, which was really nice. We also got a salad from the salad/grain bowl vendor, a ramen, and sushi roll. The sushi wasn't great at all- there was too much rice. The ramen was tasty and the salad nice and big as well. read more

Glorified Bougie food court! They have Small Cheval burgers, pizza, pasta, chicken sandwiches, and some other stuff. I don't know why I thought it was going to be different but it was just basically a mall food court cafeteria with a nicer interior and better table and seating options such as couches and comfy restaurant booths! read more

I had the cheese pizza from the Motor City Vault and the Golden Fries. The pizza was good for under 5 dollars. The fries are regular cut but not homemade though. Mostly everything is under 10 dollars which is great. read more

So what can I say about Aster Hall, It's all you and wanted and didn't know you needed. I went to Aster Hall after my co-workers brought in some great smelling chicken. It's just across the street so, it made it even better. The prices are moderate considering the food and area that it is in. In my first trip I spent about $40 in good for my family. I ordered Shoyu Ramen with extra five spice, Italian beef, Chicago's style hot dogs, burger from Au cheval. The ramen was pretty good for what it was worth, I would say a solid 6. I've had better at Jinya Ramen and Ramen San. All the other things I ordered were good. When you got to pick up your food, you get them from different vaults. Your receipt shows you what vault to go to. There is a hidden gem at the sweets counter. They have gigantic cookies, slices of cake, and other goodies too. Stop by on your way down the escalator.
