I would give my carbonara a 3/5 bc the sauce was too think for my liking and the meat was too salty, more than usual from my experience having this dish at other restaurants. In an effort to find some of Austin's best, this is definitely one! ASTI Trattoria is an absolute gem. The staff is very friendly, good atmosphere... the food is some of the best I have ever tasted! The Capellini with beef and pork meatballs was the entree of choice, and it did not disappoint! The three sides, roasted cauliflower, Brussels and sautéed spinach were a perfect compliment to the delicious meal. First time here, went on a Wednesday night, was about 75% full. We were given a two top in a very awkward place, along the hallway barrier with my seat essentially in the walkway between the foyer and the dining room. It was an odd choice, given there were empty 4 tops the whole time we were there. On the table were two long bread sticks, I had expected them to be crunchy but they were sorta soft, like that stale type of soft. Didn't finish the breadstick. We ordered the arancini (special) for the appetizer. The red sauce was more acidic than I like, but what was worse was the inside of my arancini was cold cheese... We split two dishes - carbonara and corn risotto. The carbonara was very good, and the kitchen very nicely split the bowls between us and put mushrooms in mine (vegetarian) ND the guanciale in the other. The corn risotto though was unfortunate, it had the texture of oatmeal, watery, and I didn't finish it. We were also brought a basket of soft bread slices, some had garlic butter spread and were decent, others were untoasted and unflavored. The bill was high, and I felt it didn't match the meal at all. Just had brunch here and I wish that it had been a better experience. Service was slow at best. Didn't see our server for half an hour after drinks and apps were delivered. TRIGGER WARNING: COCKROACH CRAWLED UP MY LEG!!! I would like to start off this review by saying that while the food was good-- although overpriced for the portion and quality of the food we received-- the service was atrocious. We were sat down in a back corner of the restaurant and initially the service was okay with the waiter bringing out drinks and breadsticks. However, while we were sitting down eating our breadsticks (a little stale but had good flavor), out of the corner of my eye I saw a fast, dark blur. I looked over and saw a cockroach about two inches in length run across the floor towards the wall. I immediately flagged over our waiter who (might I add never apologized for such an unappetizing occurrence) seemingly dismissed our concerns and walked away without offering for us to move tables. There was seemingly no action taken over the fact that a large cockroach was seen running around the floor and our waiter came to take our order a minute later like nothing had happened. About ten minutes later our food came out and it tasted good but, for the amount of food we received, was not worth the $25 price tag. After we had just taken our last bites, I felt a tickle on my ankle. I looked down and saw, AND FELT, this LARGE COCKROACH crawl up my pant leg (If I might add never in my entire life has this happened to me before!!) I leapt up and screamed and the waiter came over and asked what the problem was. He NEVER APOLOGIZED, never told us he was going to get the manager, never acted like anything had really happened. The only action taken was that we were ushered to the front so that none of the other diners heard of the clearly disgusting condition of the restaurant. No manager ever came out and apologized for the disgusting incident. No sort of remedy was offered for the situation. We were simply brought our bill and told to have a good day. For any restaurant this would be a nightmare, but especially for a restaurant that marks itself as an upscale Italian restaurant it is just downright unacceptable. To have a full size COCKROACH RUNNING AROUND THE DINING ROOM AND CRAWLING UP CUSTOMER AFTER THE CUSTOMER NOTIFIED YOU OF THE ISSUE hints at a much larger issue with the state of hygiene and cleanliness in the restaurant. Lastly, I don't want to state the obvious but this has been one of the worst dining experiences I have had IN MY LIFE and neither I nor anyone else I know (as I will be surely be telling everyone I know this atrocious experience) will eat here again. A great neighborhood restaurant right in the center of the Hyde Park neighborhood. They've been here ever since I moved to Austin in the 2000s. They've been around this long because they are consistent and the servers are friendly. Food here is modern inspired Italian faire. Pasta is fresh. One of the few places where you can get mussels and clams in the city consistently without going to a seafood restaurant. I don't normally order the meat based dishes as I find them to be a little bit on the heavy side. Save room for dessert. If it's fall or spring definitely opt for their outdoor patio and people watch. read more

I personally love Italian food. Seemed like a great choice. We called ahead. Got a reservation. Told that it was packed, but we could eat on the "warm/heated" patio. There was a white tent. Small tables. We walked in & was seated near the door, in the walk-way freezing. No heat lamps. My buddy is an Attorney in Dallas, she was there for a conference. I just knew she was pissed & about to rip them apart. She spoke to management. We were moved within the same tent, deeper into the center. Carried our own waters while the guy held the table above folks head. It was embarrassing. Someone approached us & said there's suddenly an open table inside, we took it ASAP. After all of that commotion, we finally got in some drink orders. The server wasn't attentive. That annoyed us. No bread offer, but the party of 4 beside us asked for more bread. We asked the server about that, she told us "Oh we've run out!" OK! There was a table buser? PALOMA, super sweet and she paid attention to detail. At first we asked, "Are you our server? You're doing the things the other lady didn't do. Thanks!" Then she mentioned there's a crunchy crouton type bread that we can have. That helped a lot! The food was so tasty once we got it. My fave Italian restaurant in Austin. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars! This is the place to go if you want quality pasta that hits all the right notes: al-dente texture, good sauce, nice portions, decent price. Based on our experience, ASTI is good at classic Italian pasta dishes that are executed with quality. It's not about fancy ingredients or fusion/trendy cooking; it's just about getting the dish right. Everything we had was delicious. We couldn't resist the caprese appetizer special; the tomatoes were perfectly ripe and the burrata was melt-in-your-mouth good. We had the rigatoni Amatriciana and the carbonara and both were delicious. The pasta was just the right amount of chewy and the sauces were balanced. We normally don't get dessert but couldn't resist the tiramisu. No regrets bc it's so delicious. The only thing I'd call out is that it comes covered with almonds which goes great with the dish but isn't called out on the menu, so watch out if you have nut allergies! The service was great, and the only reason for not giving 5 stars is bc the broccoli rabe side was a bit disappointing. The portion was really small for the price and the flavor was ok. Probably would skip the sides next time. Last thing -- I only saw two of the employees wear a mask; not sure if that's bc everyone else is vaccinated or bc they don't care. Wonderful service, food and atmosphere! They accommodate gluten free/ celiac so well, and our server started off by asking the table if there were any food allergies. In my opinion one of the things that sets certain restaurants above and beyond others is the quality of service. This week, Asti just got added to my list of Austin restaurants that do this. My husband and I celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary this week. It was also 10 years to the day that we got engaged...we had dinner at Asti that night. First- kudos to still being here! In the last 10 years Austin has changed a lot and I personally believe we have a bit of a fickle dining scene- always looking for the next, best thing. We dined outside bc- pandemic and they do an excellent job with spacing and keeping it safe. The food was great, as it always is. We had mussels, fried artichoke and calamari as appetizers. All excellent. It was one of the first times since the pandemic that they had their mussels back on the menu...bc (obviously) those don't make a great takeout option. My husband had the clam linguini "dirty" with sausage. I had the spaghetti carbonara- both delicious. It's the crispy bacon/pork belly for me in that spaghetti that does it. We finished off with Tiramisu and couple of glasses of Vino Santo that was to die for. My husband had dropped flowers off beforehand that were waiting at our table. I won't go into too much detail- but they certainly provided some our celebratory dinner gratis. I might have cried a bit on the way home having been so moved by how great they were. This pandemic has been hard on small businesses, particularly restaurants. It's experiences like the one we just had that make me want to make certain Asti is here for another 10 years. read more

Lovely outdoor patio as the Austin temperatures start to cool down. We came here for a birthday and received the absolute best service we've had in years. Our waiter was incredible: he helped us select our wine through taste testing, gave us extra garlic bread for our dip (bread was out of this world), and when one of our orders was a bit cold, he had the kitchen make an entirely new order (not per our request, but the gesture was appreciated). There is so much to choose from on the menu, but a unique option they have is to order 2 pasta entrees in half portions. ASTI started doing a brunch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 to 3, so we gave it a try today (Friday) and really enjoyed it: great biscuits (not what I was expecting to find at a trattoria, but yes, great), shakshuka, and the obligatory variation on Eggs Benedict. Prior to today's brunch, we have gone to ASTI for dinner once or twice a month for a long time. Though I admit to the odd "miss" every once in a while (mostly just inconsistent calamari) and the kitchen can be on the slow side at times, we still love it and keep going back. We see a lot of the same faces on staff, so I suspect they treat their team well in addition to having great food. The environment is warm and alive, great for a date night or a small group of friends or out-of-town visitors. I'm not sure if it is completed yet, but they are working on a major improvement to their outside seating, which will be fine buttoned up when the weather is bad and fantastic on a mild evening. You can always roll the dice, but on Friday and Saturday evenings (the nights we usually go), I suggest having reservations (opentable) as the waiting area is not large. This is an established restaurant that has been doing it the right way for years, well worth a try. read more

I've been here many times. The service and food has always been great. Most recently I met a few girlfriends here after work for a bite and a drink before a show. There were eight of us and we got there during happy hour (4-6pm). The rose bubbly was the winner. We ordered a couple dishes of calamari (also on HH). Good flavors and the calamari was cooked just right. For dinner, I'd recommend one of their homemade pasta dishes if you're hungry. I wanted something on the lighter side this visit and opted for the 3 sides for $15. The Brussels are delicious, perfect combo of sweet and savory due to the balsamic. The zucchini noodles with arugula pesto are light but filling and the spinach with garlic was tasty and made me feel stronger than Popeye. ;) read more

I guess my husband and I ordered the wrong stuff because we had the opposite experience from what we read from the reviews. We ordered the Margherita pizza, bianca pizza, and calamari for takeout. When I was waiting for the food to be made, I noticed the space looked nice and had a good amount of people dining inside, so I was excited to get the food and eat right away. However, once we got home, we were really disappointed. First off, there was barely any basil on the margherita pizza.. it looked like they sprinkled pieces of short hair threads all over. That was how much (or little) they gave. Second, the pizza was raw in the center. Disgusting and cold. Third, there was waaay too much truffle oil in the Bianca pizza. You couldn't even taste the cheese. And lastly, the calamari was way too chewy and cold, as if it wasn't fully cooked. It felt like they just fried frozen calamari rather than waiting for it to thaw and then fry it. We pretty much threw this all away. What a waste of food and money. This was such a huge disappointment especially knowing that we paid $50 for uncooked, unsatisfying food. Since I was talking with my friend, my husband took the baby to the bathroom for a diaper change only to find that there is no changing table in the men's restroom! There IS one in the women's restroom. I would suggest putting a changing table in the men's restroom to be more inclusive for the men/dad's that change their baby's diapers! Although we've lived in Hyde Park for three years and have been to this place several times, it wasn't until this evening that we discovered what a wonderful HH they have. Fortunately, after being seated, along came one of the most devoted and caring servers in the city, Frank. We each started with the house bubbles, one pink and a clear. Frank suggested one of the starter specials of an arugula salad with grilled peaches, crushed pistachios and blue cheese. What a spectacular way to celebrate the flavors of summer! Y'all don't sleep on Asti's brunch. Friday-Sunday, 11-3. Their biscuits are amazing, maybe the best in town! They even make their butter in house?!! The service is always impeccable. You may need a reservation for Friday or Saturday night, but otherwise you can usually just walk in. They've made a lot of improvements to the patio in the past few years and I love sitting on the patio when the weather is nice. The food and service here absolutely deserve the high rating. The seafood dishes we had, calimari and mussels, are first rate. The light, spicy cream sauce on the mussels makes them the best I've had. Caccio de peppe and pizzas were well prepared. The lemon dessert and tiramisu were raved about too. What an excellent brunch ... we went a little late ... 1:00 pm ... and we were the only table in the restaurant... we started out with the donut plate that came with fresh made sugar donuts and vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso over top ... needless to say they were delicious... next up was the egg Benedict... I have had it on English muffin, biscuit, crab cake and even green fried tomatoe ... but today it was on the tasty focaccio bread ... so good ... prosciutto and the most creamy hollandaise sauce.
