The outside patio has two large space heaters and it can be cozy and warm in some spots, but still quite chilly around the perimeter. We started with their basket of bread, which was delicious. I did not expect to love this place as much as I did! ASTI recently hired a new chef (who was on one of the Food network shows that I can't recall), and she is doing an amazing job! There isn't much to say about the restaurant interior - it's a little crowded, modern, and busy, but it's nice. The staff are all very friendly and attentive, and sometimes you'll get free samples of food (if your order enough, I assume). As for the food, it is sooooo good. The new chef has incorporated a lot more variety of vegetables into the dishes, and these ingredients are hand-picked from a local Farmer's Market. Furthermore, the herbs used are supposedly grown in one of the staff's herb gardens and freshly picked every day. White bean dip: YUM. It is so smooth and light, very similar to hummus, but not as textured. Free bread: Oh man, this bread is really well-baked and seasoned; we probably went through 3 of the baskets. Risotto: I cannot recommend this dish enough. It was so fragrant and made with quail egg and sprouts; literally every bite was heaven. As we were driving home this Friday after dinner at Asti, both my spouse and I stated that we wished we lived within walking distance because this would be a perfect casual option to enjoy on a regular basis. We have dined here 2x in the past 3 months and were really impressed both times across the board. The preparation of some of the more simple dishes - like the white bean dip with grilled crostini or the capellini neopolitano - is spot on and really lets the freshness of the ingredients shine through. The portions are a decent size and well presented. This was almost a 5 star review, and if it were just for service, it would be. The main dining room was full so we opted for the bar seating. Mitch took great care of us. He is passionate about the food and knowledgeable about the wines. Definitely a standout example of a service professional. The one drawback I have, which is nitpicking - relates to the lighting of the restaurant. The dining room is a bit too dark for my preference. However, the bar is definitely too bright. I realize the staff need light to work back there, yet maybe not that much. Food is a solid 4 stars. Service 5. It is interesting to me how a restaurant can change from lunch to dinner. I was excited about my new find so I wanted to take my heart throb Suzi to dinner with 3 other friends. Made reservations online which was nice since I was concerned that we would have to wait for a table. I was a little disappointed that they do not offer the polenta bowls on the dinner menu, but never mind the Saffron Risotto with Seafood in Spicy Tomato Sauce called my name. The wifey had a pizza pie. Our guests had a pizza, the Braised Lamb Shank Ossobuco and the Briased Short Ribs & Horseradish Gremolata. We started with the calamari appetizer which was fine. Our entree's arrived and we began to get stuck in. Unfortunately, my risotto was a bust. The risotto reminded me of porridge, although the broth was tasty and the seafood was nice. One of my friends is a great cook and I gave him a bite of my risotto in the event I had no idea what I was talking about. He agreed with me, overcooked. Never mind, I ate the broth and seafood and left all the risotto in the middle of the plate. The wifey's pizza was average, nothing to exciting at all. However the lamb shank and the short ribs were a hit. Unfortunately, when the waiter picked up our plates, mine full with the risotto, I mentioned to him that the risotto was off. He wasn't very concerned at all, just said sorry and on he went. One of my guest's ordered the cheese plate for after our meal. This was a disappointment as well. It's not exactly inexpensive, $20 with the Parma and it consisted of a small ice-cream scoop of what looked like ricotta/cottage cheese and a hard, think wedge o Parmesan here, goat cheese.. that was it. Nice condiments went with the cheese plate, but we really expected a cheddar and perhaps a blue as well.. My gut tells me that they just were having an off night and perhaps ran out of cheese.. with Antonelli's in the hood, that would be a surprise. So I would probably not order that again. I've been watching The Next Food Network Star lately and noticed the fabulous and adorable Brad Sorenson in fact works at a restaurant in Austin. Woah. So I started begging my dad to take me to meet him and try his food. And today my dad surprised me and drove me over there for lunch on a whim. Luckily, Brad was there and I got to talk to him about the show and related stuff. He's a really nice, fun guy. Not as shy as he appears on TV. For our meal, we started with the calamari which was on the house courtesy of a friend of the family who works there. It was a tad salty but very tender and crispy. All together pretty good calamari. For our entrees we couldn't decide between the Tuesday special which was a calzone or the white pizza with truffle oil. We settled on the calzone and the trout, which is a permanent menu item. I'll tell you what. Best. Trout. Ever. The skin was crisped and the fish was tender and perfectly cooked. It was served over a delicious cold salad of fregola (similar to Israeli couscous) with a Meyer lemon aioli. The salad had some parsley, red onion, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and a delicious vinaigrette. A little bit of the cold fregola, some Meyer lemon aioli, and the hot crispy fish is like a perfectly balanced textural explosion. Smooth yet country. Firm yet fluffy. Refreshing yet rich in flavor. Highly recommend it. The calzone isn't my typical kind of dining at lunch. Heavy and hearty. Good flavor from the ricotta and olives and sausage. The red sauce was fabulous and fresh tasting and the dressed arugula added the perfect bit of bitterness to curb the creamy richness of the calzone. Well balanced and constructed, just not my personal favorite as far as lunch dining goes. For dessert the restaurant owner recommended the brûlée of ricotta. It was freaking delicious. My god. Creme brûlée doesn't stand a chance against this ricotta. Get it. It's awesome. The interior design of the place is surprisingly fresh clean and modern for Hyde park. The tables have a diner- flair and the bar reminds me of an old luncheonette. But not in a bad way. The waitress was a little bit spacey but very sweet and willing to comment on the menu should we ask. Overall a wonderful experience. Plus they have Italian Cokes! Give this place a shot. It's not as bad as it's been labeled as. I was certainly pleasantly surprised given the negative reviews I read. If you don't like it, at least try talking to Brad. The dude's a hoss. Our experience was sub-par for our 6pm Saturday reservation for 4. First we were sat directly next to the door to the outside patio. Staff opened the door 6 times during the first 3 minutes and we were blasted with hot air every time. There were tons of open tables. And considering we made reservations, we were disappointed to be given what was clearly the worst table. When we requested a move to our waiter we were met with resistance that "well the door wont be opened that much" and "those other tables may be reserved." Definitely not how I expected to be treated. We were eventually moved. The food was pretty good. We ordered a bottle of wine for the table and then another of the same vintage. This second bottle was obviously off. It smelled musty and tasted VERY different from the first. It was undrinkable. When we mentioned this to our waiter, we were again met with resistance. "I'm sure its fine" and "It smells fine" and "I guess I can go check if that's what you really want." I watched our waiter hand the bottle to the manager who took one whiff, scrunched up his nose in disgust and handed the waiter a fresh bottle. It was clearly corked. No major apology. No comped glasses. Nothing. 4 people just drank rotten wine that you served. And the response was to just gloss over it and plop a new bottle on the table. I am not impressed. read more

I feel like good Italian food is a little lacking in Austin but this place hit all the marks. I got the Rigatoni Amatriciana and although the Linguine & littleneck clams was what was recommended by the server, pretty sure my plate was the best. The sauce was rich, the rigatoni was just right, not too salty or over processed tasting like a lot of the other places around here. Filling portions. Can't speak on the wine quality since I'm not a big wine connoisseur but it was a large selection. Good service, it's slow paced service but if you're in a rush you probably shouldn't be trying to eat Italian. Once again a failed Uncle Nicky's visit landed us back at Asti on Friday with one set of our parents in tow. We don't know if it's because they were paying that we had a better dining experience, but we definitely left happier than last time. We started with a couple happy hour specials: calamari and the fried artichokes. Calamari was standard, but we liked the fried artichokes and it seems that their lemon aioli has tamed its puckering zestiness. For dinner we shared the Capellini Neopolitano (with shrimp) and Paglia e Fieno Casarecce. The first dish, honestly, was just OK. You'd think that the simplicity of the summer ingredients would have meant they tasted extraordinarily fresh, but the whole plate was a bit boring. The casarecce was more interesting, though we were wondering if the extra showering of chile flakes was trying to cover up for something. The side of spinach was just as good as we remembered and our little one seemed to enjoy her meatballs. Parentals were also happy with their dishes (pizza and carbonara). Quick note about dessert: it was an ACTUAL semifreddo! Way to go, Asti! This version was lemon and had meringue and berries and was pretty good. Our server was the same guy as last time (we think(?)) and was attentive for most of our meal, but things did lag at certain points. Nothing major. So...who knows if someone-else-paying makes for the best tasting sauce, but this meal ended on a higher note than last time, and restored our faith in one of our neighborhood spots. read more

Made reservations and went on a Friday night. It was pretty busy. I was really disappointed in the food. I expect an Italian restaurant to serve warm crusty bread, that was not the case. We got soft rolls that were seasoned with sage and reminded me of Thanksgiving stuffing. The best thing I had was my Caesar salad. Approximately 6 leaves of romaine with dressing and cheese - no croutons. Way overpriced. My husband ordered the special which was okay. My daughter ordered the chicken parm which was pretty bland and did not have any sauce on it. It was on a bed of cappellini, which had a couple of tablespoons of sauce. Not enough in my opinion. I had the capellini Neopolitano. Again, not enough sauce. It was pretty much pasta with a couple of stewed tomatoes thrown on top. After a couple of tries here with waiters snooting through my unacceptable choices of wine to pair with my food (it's my money, bitches), Asti has turned into a tried and true neighborhood staple for great dining in Hyde Park (and in the center of our small villiage), as well as a consistent joint for the second best Italian in town (first is Vespaio, for now...). Service has either greatly improved, or I was subject to someone's bad day. Was just in for lunch and they couldn't have worked harder to get our take out order completed, while making sure we were happy while we waited. They made us feel like Superstar VIPs, major city. The pasta is perfect (especially the Spaghetti Carbonara), the specials the last time I was in there...honeydew melon with light viniagrette, simple and fantastic, and the desserts will seal the deal (unless you wait and go to Dolce Vita next door for an after-drink and ice cream combo). Portions are small, so if you want to eat your ass off, perhaps come back when you're less the glutton. No hard liquor, but that's fine.
