I ordered the Rib Eye steak medium rare, it comes out completely well done. So I take the steak back up the counter and showed the guy the steak, he says "no, that is medium rare". the bf had come back from montreal where he had some killer chicken shawarma and was craving it. so i attempted to search for it here.... while the food here was good, the bf was disappointed bc it did not match up to the chicken shawarma that he was craving, plus it didnt fill up his gigantic belly. i ordered kufta sandwich while he ordered the Mediterranean chicken. i really liked my kufta. the tomato onion cucumber mix they put inside was so fresh and a perfect combo. i was missing the yogurt sauce tho so that was very disappointing. and the sandwich wouldnt stay together so i eventually had to move to a fork and knife method because it was dripping and spilling everywhere. the chicken was very tender and moist. same idea as the kufta but different meat. i thought both were tasty and for a decent price. $6.50 per sandwich. i'd like to try a platter next time... maybe the lamb shank or something with the rice. the rice looked really. but alas... the bf still wants to find a chicken shawarma place. anyone have recommendations for the NOVA/Arlington area??? read more

Came here randomly and glad we found the place. The lamb shank here is really, really good. Also had the kifta kabob which was very flavorful and and priced right. Service is friendly and it's a nice atmosphere. Sides were tasty and the prices were pretty good. read more

This place is great. I've had the Greek salad with chicken twice now. It's excellent. The salad is very fresh. The dressing offered is a creamy Parmesan-type, which basically would taste great with anything. The chicken really is the best part. It's so juicy and perfectly seasoned. Reminds of the shish kabob my parents make at home! It's delicious. They also throw in a stuffed grape leaf to try. It's decent. The chicken and the salad is what's really good. I want to come back and try out some of the sandwiches with the chicken next. Very happy I live so close! read more

Fantastic food here! I've gotten the gyro, pizza, and Greek salad, all on different visits, and the food was always top notch. The service is ok, and sometimes the food takes a while to come out, but I'd rather have them take the time to make good food than to serve me something bad! Fresh food for cheap prices. The pizza is a stealth hit (try the Egyptian) but braised lamb, half chicken, and kabobs, or shwarma are also delicious. I would suggest staying away from the salads which are really nothing special. read more

One of my go-to places when I don't want to cook and I can't decide what I want. Mostly b/c they have a pretty decent variety. I absolutely LOVE the vegetarian sampler, the falafel is fried to order and its so crispy w/o being greasy at all. I wasn't a big fan of the grape leaves or the beets, and so I just ask them to substitute something else instead, and they do it with no problem. They've changed the bread from what they used to have, and now its much thicker and dough-ier. I liked the old style better, but whatev's. The lamb kabob is also delicious and the salmon is surprisingly well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Oh and BE SURE to try both the green sauce and the red sauce sitting in the counter. I love my food super spicy and the red definitely has a kick to it while still having a depth of flavor. I think the owner told me once it has mango in it...but he wldn't divulge anything else. We used to love Astor for a very long time. It had been a while since we've been but went last night and it was just a nightmare. It was 47 min from the time I ordered until when our family got our food (approx 7:15 on a Thursday night). A pizza and two plates of kebob - not a very complex order. I saw the cook put the pizza in 30 min after I ordered it. The order was wrong when delivered and it took another 10 min to just get the salad that I ordered to go with the kebob. The food seems to have dipped 1 or 2 stars as well. The team working at Astor was trying their best (it seems) but they could have used about 3 more people to help. The place was pretty dirty compared to when we have been there in the past and there zero chance we will go back. If there is new management you should be ashamed of what you have done to a great place. read more

Abysmally bad. Honestly have no idea what all the positive reviews are - this is the first restaurant that was so bad that I walked away angry. Ordered the kafta kebab platter, the vegetarian sampler, and two boylan sodas The Boylans, while normally tasty sodas, were warm. The kebab meat itself was average. The accompanying chickpeas were overcooked and poor in comparison to Ravi or East West, the rice was meh, and the 'grilled vegetables' literally consisted of three pieces of semi-raw onion with a tiny little wedge of green pepper. The vegetarian sampler was not an improvement. It mainly consisted of a dinner plate with a bunch of dips/sauce based vegetables all plopped down next to each other. Because there was nothing separating the dips/sauces - and because they jammed both the kebab platter and the sampler on the same tray - the dips and sauces began mixing into an unpalatable mess. The sauces themselves were bland to begin with. Accompanying the sauces/dips/salads was one lone pita (one pita for a plate that is half-covered in dips) that went stale within 10 minutes and some sort of spinach pastry that was decent. It was supposed to come with a stuffed grape leaf, but they weren't bothered enough to actually put it on the plate. What really annoyed me wasn't the subpar food - it was the totally thoughtless way it was prepared and served. Calling three pieces of onion and a wedge of green pepper 'grilled vegetables'. Selling a three dip sampler as a bunch of dips just ladled onto a flat dish on top of each other. Giving one piece of pita bread for a dip sampler and forgetting the stuffed grape leaf. Maybe I caught them on a bad night - but this was the worst place I've been to in the DC area. read more

Astor Arlington was a staple for me for a long time. Their food was consistent, fresh, tasty, etc... In the past couple of months though I have been less than satisfied with what's coming out of the kitchen. I don't know if there has been kitchen staff turnover or not, but something is broken. The last several orders have come out with a marked sloppiness. The quality of the ingredients doesn't appear to have suffered, however the quantity and presentation of the meals are markedly poorer. The mediterranean chicken sandwich I just ordered was a sloppy mess with half the amount of chicken I used to see in it. The pita, which in the past was grilled to crispy perfection, was a doughy, wet mess. The result? As soon as the wrapping came off the sandwich fell apart. The following violations were also observed: 3-501.17 (A) Foods prepared and held in the food establishment for more than 24 hours is not clearly marked to indicate the date or day by which the food shall be consumed on the premises, sold, or discarded. 5-205.11 The handwashing sink located at front counter is used for purposes other than handwashing. Observed employee rinsing utensils in the sink. 6-501.111 (C) Proper pest control methods are not used to minimize the presence of insects, rodents, and other pests found in the establishment. I've been craving gyros for awhile, but was not really sure where to go to fulfill this craving. I had heard of Astor Mediterranean, so decided to give it a try on a random saturday afternoon. The restaurant has street parking and its own parking lot, so parking was easy. Inside it was not too crowded, so I placed my order and grabbed a 2-top table for myself. The gyro was delicious and a very generous portion. I also ordered a chickpea salad which was good too. I'm a fan. I have gone back at least 3 times in the past couple weeks! So glad I've found a great place with delicious mediterranean cuisine! I will need to give the soulvaki and kabobs and other menu items a try in the future. read more

You can't go wrong with trying anything off the menu of Astor. I'm in lovi with their gyro, the pita bread is thinner than other places, which makes it more enjoyable to eat the meat, cucumber and tahini sauce. YUM. I've also tried the chicken/cheese panini, which had copious amounts of onions but otherwise delicious. read more

What happened to all the staff that used to work here??? I used to go here at least once per week but things don't seem as good as they were. For example I got the gyro sandwich and it had these strange circular (and not so well cooked) pieces of meat. I never got this type of meat before in the last couple years when I got the gyro. So sad what's happened to this place. Used to be our whole family and many of our friends' go-to takeout for years. First the service changed in the past year or so - they started getting every order wrong. Now the interior renovation is confusing and uninviting and several menu items have changed for the worse. Potatoes used to be delicious seasoned roasted wedges, now they're bone dry, shriveled up discs. The veggies used to be delicious roasted broccoli, cabbage and carrots, now it's just a pile of soggy onions and green peppers. So confused and saddened by the changes. This place used to be the best restaurant for Mediterranean food and I previously was a weekly customer. The food was great and the staff was friendly. I have been a loyal customer for a few years now but after the past four visits, I will never visit Astor again. I ordered a simple sandwich combo each time and the incompetent staff has ruined my order each and every time. Each time the food has taken over an hour, the staff has changed, the food is no longer as good, and I can't give them another chance. None of the cashiers have the ability to take an order, the staff gives off the worst attitude towards customers, and the service has declined to the level of a McDonalds. I write this review with a heavy heart, as Astor was one of our go-to places for a long time. I'm sorry I never wrote a glowing review in the past, but we went last night without consulting Yelp first and were very disappointed. After checking yelp the morning after, it seems management has changed and it has not been for the better. Some of our favorite dishes are the Gyro salad and the lamb shank - and the Gyro salad I had was fine and generally in line with how it typically is (though for dine-in, they forgot any olives, as well as the salad dressing). I can't really complain about it that much. The french fries were fine, as was the hummus itself. But that's about the extent of it (and how hard is it to not screw up a salad?). The pita that comes with the hummus has changed so significantly that it is hardly edible - we sent it back to get a new one and the same type of dry, thin, inedible cardboardy thing came back. It makes me wonder if they are using the same type of pita for the gyro - if they are, then we need a moment of silence for the poor gyro meat stuffed inside of it. The rice that comes with the lamb shank was completely different - almost like a broken brown rice. Edible, but definitely not the same rice as it has been. The texture was mushier and dry. The lamb shank itself was just OK - it used to be fall off the bone delicious. Now, it's not nearly as tender and the whole dish is a lot more tomato-y. Some may find that fine, but we did not think it was a good change to the dish. Aside from the food, I didn't have much interaction with the staff other than to order and request a new pita - and I had to ask again to get the pita. They were completely out of straws, which is a bit mind-boggling, and have coffee tops as soft-drink covers. I cannot recommend coming back here, as the whole experience was just strange as long-time Astor customers. I hope that either this new management shapes up, or the old one comes back. Until there are some major changes, it seems like we've lost a good place to management that wants to cut corners and cheapen the food. read more

I don't usually write reviews but I felt compelled to voice my opinion. Perhaps I had all the wrong things since everybody else seems to love it. Regardless, I thought the prices were not in line with the quality of food. Baba Ganoush - Although the eggplant was soft, it was barely mashed, I couldn't taste any garlic, tahini, or salt. There was barely any oil in it. I wouldn't be surprised if it came from a package. Hummus - Tasted as if it came right out of the local grocery store. There was no taste, no oil, no pickle, no nothing. sigh... How do you not know how to make hummus? Pita - Driest pita bread ever. The bread is most likely the same bread you find at Safeway. Spicy Chickpeas - The paste could use more flavoring and the chickpeas needed to be cooked a bit longer. Mixed-Kabob - All of the meat was way too dry. I couldn't even cut through the lamb. I love this place! A friend and I happened upon it one day when we were in the mood for a decently priced meal. I wasn't sure about the location or the glass food case...but wow...it's a hidden gem! The falafel sandwich is delicious! You have to be pretty hungry to finish it...because it's pretty big, but the flavor is awesome. I was a bit skeptical when I saw the outside of the building. It's in the same building as a chiropractor and and Army recruitment office. When you walk in you get the Italian deli feeling with all the big glass deli counters, but it gets better. When you order, you have to wait for your number to be called and you take it back to your table. The food is great. I usually get the gyro with extra meat. My girlfriend loves the veggie platter. The quality of food greatly surpasses the venue. This has become a go to for us. read more

Come to Astor's for tender Greek style kabob! Greek style is milder than the Middle Eastern style kabob in terms of spices and herbs, so expect a difference in seasoning/marination techniques. Most people probably go here for the gyros or falafel but we go for the pizza. I really like the greek pizza with lamb, feta, and peppers. It has the perfect amount of garlic on it as well. Soo delicious! The sandwiches are good too. There is plenty of parking in the lt and on street as well. Plus the neighborhood is starting to get built up, so I expect the place to become busier. read more
