I was happy that the meat on the gyro was real meat and not the skinny shreds some places pass off as meat. The tzatziki sauce was good. The hummus was creamy. The dolmades were good as well. Don't shoot the messenger, but I did give Astor two tries. One for deliver which honestly would have been a 1 star since they took over an hour and the food was cold when it arrived. So if it would have been hot it might have been a different story, but even reheated was just like the rating says 'Meh. I've experienced better.' 2nd time we actually walked there and I ordered the falafel platter and my boyfriend ordered the falafel sandwich. He liked the flavor and I actually had to agree that the falafel itself was pretty good (better than Moby's); however, the bread did not taste fresh, and not sure how salad greens with tomatoes on it is considered an Egyptian salad - was just dry lettuce no dressing. This place is a small little shop just East of the Nat'l Cemetery. Nice patio area and good quick food. We have eaten here a few times and I have always been very pleased. Food is fresh and delicious. Ambiance is very casual and lowkey with no wait service - you order at the counter. Location is a in a pretty dingy area of the Clarendon 'outskirts', but convenient with ample parking in the back. I would recommend the falafel sandwich or platter, the Astor salad, the White Pizza, the hummus (for sure) or the chicken kebab salad. This place is great if you're in the mood for kabebs, hummus, eggplant, and pita bread! If I'm not in the mood for kabebs, I go for the salmon, which is moist and cooked well every time I've had it. I haven't tried their pizza but I always see people ordering it so it must be pretty good too. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food you get. They're very consistent so you know what to expect, which is a good thing in this case. They also grow some of their own herbs outside, along the front walk, which is awesome! read more

She has the grilled chicken pita and Egyptian salad and I had the lamb shank. Both were delicious. Decided to finally give this place a try tonight despite living very close by and came away impressed. I was not blown away hence the 3 stars. I ordered the mixed grill, kufta, and the baba ghanaouj. All the meat was very well cooked and seasoned. The rice was also very good as were the chickpeas. The baba ghanouj however was inedible. It was sweet as if they had added sugar. I have lunch here at least once every two weeks. The chicken kabob meal is great. I love the rice and the spicy chickpeas. Can I just say the lamb shank is amazing??? They slow roast it overnight (I finally asked them how it becomes so tender - it falls off the bone), and paired with any two sides, I recommend the vegetable of the day (today was spinach; whole leaf cooked spinach) and the eggplant salad. The traditional Greek/Med fare is there and delish too: spanakopita, dolma, babaganoush, hummus, tabbouleh, etc. The other reviewers have captured the essence of this place pretty well. Nice place! Got stuck at the nearby Day's Inn and was pleasantly surprised to find this nice restaurant. Despite its somewhat suburban location, it has a nice interior and a decent patio. The food is great considering the price level. I had a lamb shank with potatoes and salad. The lamb and the potatoes were tasty. The salad suffered a bit from wilted lettuce, but the tomato/cucumber/onion part tasted fresh. Bottom line: On a cheaped out business trip to DC, this is an excellent option for a value dinner. Enjoyed the Fava Bean Dip, followed by the exceedingly messy Mediterranean Chicken sandwich, which seemed to fall out of the pita just to avoid my mouth. Luckily, my mouth won each time, and the perfectly cooked chicken was consumed with nary a drop of tzatziki spilled on my clothes. My girlfriend had the Beef Souvlaki, and recommended it as well. We ordered a veggie appetizer platter and a mixed kabob skewer platter for a party of 10. It turned out perfect, and it was more than enough food. We were eating leftovers for a week after. Lucky us! :) One recommendation, call at least a day ahead of time for catering orders if you can. It's better to give them a bit of lead time versus calling at the last minute. Tried Astor yesterday and it was a really nice find. One of my elite Yelp friends took me to this little gem tucked away in a mini retail area on Pershing. There was plenty of free parking. The restaurant is set up like a deli where you see the wonderful Mediterranean dishes displayed underneath the counter. You order and pay at the counter and get a buzzer that will let you know when your food is ready for pick-up. There is seating available inside or in our case we opted to sit outside in the patio area lined with tomato and herb plants. I was excited to try Astor for the first time. The ample free parking is a real plus. The food was really good-we had the hummus, spinach pie, and a gyro. The food was a good value, but the bottled Heinekens we ordered came in at $5 a pop, which was more than I was expecting. The one real issue with our trip was the customer service. I went with my boyfriend, and the female cashier asked for ID when we ordered the beers. My boyfriend went to get his license out, but she waved him off and glared at me (I am 25, he is 32). I produced my ID, and she spent about 45 seconds scrutinizing it. She kept looking at me and furrowing her brow in a condescending way. Finally she sighed, reluctantly giving me back my ID. She clearly thought it was a fake, which is bizarre. It was an extremely awkward experience. read more
