I came in for a simple sushi bar while waiting for rush hour traffic to slow down wearing shorts flip flops and a tank top no make up nothing!! and found myself in a very upscale establishment but I was still treated wonderfully regardless from literally the moment I pulled up by one of the hosts who made a point to come outside and tell me that parking hours were almost over when seeing me struggling to get my credit card into the meter! Very kind ! The servers were all very friendly and accommodating especially JJ who helped me she's got a great smile and a warm demeanor! I sat at the sushi bar and everything was great I had the king salmon , the tuna maki and the mushroom miso soup all great 100% recommended and will absolutely return soon when I'm in LA next! read more

Awesome place for high quality japanese sushi and sashimi. I was surprised to be able to find the live sweet shrimp option on the menu, which ive never been able to find anywhere except in Japan. The taste did not disappoint and the service was awesome as well. Price was a little on the pricier side, but nothing that isnt affordable and it was well worth the money. The sushi is high quality The dining room is nice and quiet. The service is excellent. But the prices are not sustainable for the neighborhood. This is reflected by the fact that we were the only customers at prime dinner hour. They are also confusing customers by using the name Asuka. Asuka was an excellent and affordable sushi place up the street that had been open for almost 30 years. It closed a few years ago. When we saw the same name Asuka reappear just down the street we assumed it was a reincarnation. Don't make that assumption. The menu is not as diverse. It's more fancy and at least 4 to 5 times more expensive. Prices are comparable to Nobu but there is no view. By making the prices so high, they have priced themselves out of the class of a good neighborhood sushi place. Sadly there is nothing justifying their location or premium prices to lure people who want to pay these amounts. The restaurant is in the middle of Tehrangelos, next to a grocery store. Vincent the owner asked for suggestions so my suggestion is lower the prices and accommodate the regular sushi eater. You may also want to change the name because anyone coming here expecting old Asuka will feel overcharged. If you don't make these changes you will find yourself selling out to groupon and that's the beginning of the end. Lower prices by 50 percent or offer a local neighborhood discount or locals night. Good sushi places are hard to come by! You can do it! read more

Very authentic, tasty and fresh sushi. We went when it was busy and service was a bit slow and our waitresses forgot to put in our order for two items. I was also freezing my butt off under the ac in the right rear corner. In spite of that it was a very good meal. Excellent sushi. read more

One of my favorite sushi places in town. This is more of an authentic spot, meaning you will not be coming here if you want extra spicy mayo, eel sauce and sugary ass rolls. If you enjoy fresh fish and excellent service in addition to sake that you can't find very easily, look no further. read more

How did I not know about this place!? I thought I had been to just about every nice sushi place in town. The manager greeted us as we were seated and told us they were started in 1974! More than 40 years in restaurant business, and now the hyper-competitive sushi market so they must be doign something right! Right off, I knew I was at the right place when he said "We do not serve Westernized sushi." While the booking said it was "outdoor" seating, they merely opened up the doors to their street side patio - that does help with the airflow. Most of us got the kaiseki menu, and you can't fail with that. One of us got the omakase menu but that seems like a subset of the kaiseki. Every item was beautifully presented , each item given a brief description. The Waygu was A5, and that was buttery as ever. The uni today was from Japan, so that was a plus to be different from the typical Santa Barbar sea urchin served. There is parking in the back so you can avoid the City's attempt to extort more money people with resumed meter enforcement. There's even an EV parking charger in the front (Greenlots system). read more

Had lunch there yesterday. It was a delightful experience. We tried the Sashimi lunch special and fresh eel sushi, ended with a green tea dessert. Everything tasted fantastically. Services were excellent. Vincent, the owner, explained to us how he selects fresh fish and import ingredients to hold a high standard for the food served. He wants his customers to have a traditional Japanese dining experience which is very different than what people got used to in the U.S.. Having been to Japan myself, I know what he means and he and his staff totally delivered it. Will definitely come here again and introduce to others who love Japanese food - this will change their thinking of what real, authentic Japanese food should taste like! read more

Great sushi! Great fish from around the world! Very friendly staff! Pros: fish is very fresh and tasty. Rice is very good. Extreamly clean and modern. Great service. Cons: sushi is at a small size compare to other sushi restaurants with the same quality of fish. Pricier for size/quality sushi and for drinks. Sake nigori price is $15 for a small bottle, when in other restaurants it is no more than $12. Overall it was a great experience. Will come again. You SHOULD try!!! read more

If you want food and experience this is place to check out Last night my date brought me here for a dinner and I was blown away with the high quality food and service. It's not cheap, but well worth it. The toro was freshly imported from Spain and yellowtail from Japan . They are so detailed about the presentation and the explaining everything to us. My friend is "regular"here and maybe that elevated the whole experience. They even changed my cloth napkin from white to black to match my black outfit . Brava !!! read more

I went to Japan to try the "best sushi ever" (JIRO) and it was not. This spot though actually lives up to its name and I was very impressed. Like several other reviewers mentioned, I was surprised this restaurant was only about half full on a Friday night. It is an amazing value for what you get, with very attentive service to go along with it. I can easily see restaurants of the same caliber charging double for their nigiri! It's also interesting in that you can either opt for a more casual dinner experience, or splurge on a fancier set meal. I ordered the $80 Kaiseki (there's also a $150 Kaiseki, and they recommend booking that 2 days in advance so they can prepare the ingredients). Appetizer Plate - Oyster, Smoked Duck Breast, Monkfish Liver, and Uni over Squid Noodles Sashimi - Black Snapper Snow Crab Chawanmushi - very generous portions of snow crab Beef Tongue Stew - melt in your mouth! 5 pc nigiri: Hamachi, Toro, Unagi, Aji, Hotate Nigiri Toro Handroll Asari Clam Miso Soup Green Tea Tiramisu Custard, served with fruit and hojicha tea. Every dish was very fresh and presented beautifully. My favorites were the snow crab chawanmushi (probably the best chawanmushi I've ever had!) and the toro handroll. This wasn't even the fattiest cut of tuna but it still melted in my mouth. The beef tongue stew, braised in what I think was a red wine sauce, was also super tender and moist. I also ordered the salmon, salmon hand roll, and a white fish nigiri a la carte and those were delicious as well! The only thing I'd point out is that they yuzu was featured in a good portion of their dishes. I LOVE yuzu, so didn't mind it, but for those who don't may want to let their servers/chefs know ahead of time. Next time I'd come to try either the Sushi Omakase ($65) or Sashimi Dinner, and try some new hand rolls (like foie gras hand roll). read more

Came here for Valentine's day and had a great time. They were handing out roses to all the couples and there was a Valentine's Day menu. We ordered a la carte and got the sushi and sashimi combo, toro sashimi and scallop carpaccio. The scallop and toro were amazing, would definitely recommend. Great sushi. Their Uni from Japan is the best!! Smooth and very tasty. Toro..soft and perfectly cut. Their yellowtail is perfect! Scallop is a little on the tough side though. I must write again about the fine Japanese men and women who create every pristine moment of your experience at this magnificent restaurant. I went for my birthday recently. The wonderful sushi chefs remembered me, even though I had not been in some time. I decided to try the Asuka Special sushi course. I chose wisely. Each piece was a marvel. It was, by far, the BEST SUSHI I HAVE HAD IN LOS ANGELES AND IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I could take you through all the fish piece by piece, but just stop reading and go there now to experience it for yourself. The sushi chefs present each piece and will tell you what it is, where it is from, and to protect you from your own possible bad taste and idiocy, not to ruin their art with soy sauce. I love this as I always say there is nothing Americans need to learn more about sushi than the fact that properly prepared sushi with the highest quality fish NEEDS NO SOY SAUCE. You ruin everything about the fish and all the flavor the chef has put into the the preparation. One thing I want to mention -- the tofu. Before the sushi course started, my wife and I were fortunate enough to experience the restaurant's homemade edamame tofu. These people not only make their own tofu, they also craft their own amazing ponzu. Nothing is left to chance at Asuka. After finishing the amazing tour through the gifts of our great oceans, they brought out my favorite dessert (even though I had not been there in several months, THEY REMEMBERED) with a candle. No charge. Folks, when Jiro Dreams of Sushi, he dreams of Asuka. Please, support these people in what they are doing, for it is high art and it will bring you such great joy in being alive to experience their brilliant creations and passion for serving you the very best fish out there. read more

Most underrated sushi in all of LA. This is an easily Top-10 LA sushi joint that you can walk in anytime with no reservation. Their $68 Omakase is practically a steal, comes with uni/toro/bluefin/ikura, all the best. Fish quality is always A+++, service is over the top great. Not to mention dishes like lamb chops and duck salad are unreal. It drives me crazy how this does not consistently make all the "foodie" lists, there is no hidden gem like this in LA. read more
