My husband and I had a wonderful experience here. The food and service was reminiscent of our recent trip to Japan but with clear California influences, which we enjoyed. We came in on a weeknight close to opening without a reservation and were seated without a problem; there were only a few other people in the spacious restaurant. We were able to sit at the bar and see the chefs at work, but there were also many tables in the spacious dining room. Our waiter was outstanding; he was so polite and attentive and helpful in deciding on items to order. He could sense when we were interested in ordering more food and appeared instantly to help us navigate the menu. We decided to order a la carte. Everything was delicious, but some particular highlights were the snapper sampler, toro and regular tuna, scallop, miso-glazed cod, and chawanmushi. The tempura was decent but not as light as what we had in Japan. The foie gras hand roll was good but more of a textural experience (fatty foie gras contrasted with grains of rice) than a flavorful one. The unagi was interesting as well, quite firm in texture and less flaky than other unagi I've had. There was really nothing we disliked, but we loved the ambiance, service, and most of the food. However, portions were very small (e.g. salads) and I have had better sushi elsewhere at another Japanese-owned and operated venue. Plus, a couple of minuses: - what was intended to be someone's main dish came first, before all the appetizers (except 1) - eggplant appetizer came last during the meal, right before the dessert. To compensate for this the waitress apologized and said "there will be dessert" meaning dessert on the house I presumed. Wow. I live two blocks away from here and have been meaning to walk over since I first saw the LED lit sign from the street. Stupid me waiting in the long lines at sushi bars on Sawtelle and making reservation in Brentwood and Santa Monica when this GEM is right here in my 'hood. No wait, no reservations. They are even open for lunch too. The fish tastes like butter. The way the authentically Japanese server Introduced salmon from Scotland, Albacore from Japan, Snapper from Spain (ok I don't really remember where the snapper came from because there were so many origins) but you get the idea. And i love when the Chef discourages you from using soy sauce on certain sushi that he has prepared for you, it gives an air of authenticity to the dish. But the experience aside, at the core of it the sushi was remarkable. Last time I had sushi this good and fresh was an invite only omikase in Honolulu. Leave the traffic and hassle of Sawtelle behind and go here 1/2 mile away. Yes the prices are heftier than Sushi Stop but you pay a premium for premium unleaded gas, why not pay more for the highest grade sushi you will get on the west side. read more

I was looking for a kaiseki restaurant and came across Asuka. It is a new restaurant, so it was empty when I went for dinner, but I didn't let that deter me. It actually was quite nice and intimate. I enjoyed the variety of dishes that came from the kaiseki. Sometimes omakase at sushi restaurants can get boring with just sushi and sashimi, but kaiseki incorporates vegetables and meat, so it's more variety. Presentation was beautiful, and they bring out the dishes in gorgeous bowls and plates. I was blown away by the aesthetics of the food and plating. Taste-wise, everything was great. It wasn't the best meal I ever had, but it was worth the cost, and I'll definitely keep Asuka in mind the next time I am craving kaiseki. I strongly recommend this restaurant if you haven't tried it yet, especially if you're looking for a genuine kaiseki experience. After looking over their quite large menu, featuring nigiri, rolls, soups, entrees, and other items, we settled on the omakase. As for drinks, a hot sake and a Sapporo. I won't go into every dish, but I will say that majority of the items we had were beautifully prepared. At times unique, like the a dab of French mustard on a bluefin tuna. All the pieces had perfectly cooked rice, the right amount of wasabi, correctly portioned and fresh seafood. I came here on New Year's Eve for lunch. The restaurant is big and they have plenty of counter space. I ordered the chirashi and my husband ordered the sushi off the lunch menu. Each item was $17-$18 and the fish was so fresh. Our order came with miso soup and salad. The salad dressing was so good - it had a strong yuzu and black pepper flavor. Asuka has done that very well. AND IT'S NOT EXPENSIVE CONSIDERING THEIR QUALITY!! I had their Japanese mackerel and it was heavenly!! It was so delicately cured to perfection. They had raw SHIRAKO (Japanese cod milt) which you cannot find in most restaurants outside of Japan. I was so happy!! May just be some of the best sushi I've ever had. I selected the sushi lunch and received 8 incredible pieces of sushi. I'm not one to order salmon sushi but it was absolutely amazing. I also got yellowtail, shrimp, bluefin tuna, albacore and a holiday special that was incredible! When the waitress set it down she explained where each fish came from which was a very nice touch. We arrived at 7pm to a 60% filled dining room and got seated at the bar in front of the head chef. We ended up going with the omakase and several different types of alcohol (sake, wine, and beer). The traditional sushi served was incredible. The fresh water eel was my personal favorite but the classics like Santa Barbara uni, yellowfin belly, tuna. The highlights for me were the Beef Tongue in a tomato broth and the Green Tea Tiramisu dessert! The beef tongue was SO TENDER and the broth/sauce left me wanting more - I could just drink the whole sauce. All the sushi and sashimi were extremely fresh, displayed on this green leaf and it came with homemade fresh ginger. The restaurant is spacious with bar seating and tables and a cozy outdoor lounge area. The kitchen is open, so you can watch the chef prepare the food if you sit at the bar. Came here on a Saturday around 730pm and there was little to no wait time. They have a small patio and also tables on the sidewalk that are used as outdoor dining. It is on a relatively quiet street so not a lot of people passing by as you're eating which was nice. The staff were very friendly and we asked for a lot of recommendations and each item they recommended were delicious! We got a bottle of their sake "Mune no uchi" which was probably the best sake I've ever tasted. Very smooth and a little hint of sweet which went well with the sushi. We got 2 sets which were the Sashimi dinner and the Asuka Special Sushi. They all came one by one which was nice and gave us time to enjoy and savor each bite of sushi before moving on to the next one. For two people it was still not quite enough so we got additional pieces of king salmon, scallop, and albacore nigiri and also got the negitoro cut roll. Each piece of sushi from start to finish was fresh and delicious and was the perfect amount. Not too much to where you can barely fit it in your mouth, but not too small to where its not enough, just perfect. The quality is also very superb and the same as if it was being served at Nobu. Not sure why there weren't many people here because this place is one of my new favorite sushi places. There is ample amount of street parking and also they have their own parking in the back of the restaurant. Overall great quality food and very friendly staff and they all wear masks and gloves due to the current covid situation, and the tables were nicely spread apart. The service was awkward as we were one of two tables that Friday night. The place was vacuous and empty at what should be their busiest time. The Summary: Sadly, I wasn't bowled over and we ordered a lot of dishes that night so we can sample a bit of their menu. The sushi was just alright. Recently started eating sushi and a friend of mine took me here to try some of the best sushi in LA. Really impressed with everything I ate and would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys both hot and raw plates. I won't pretend like I know what makes sushi better than other places since I'm so new to eating it but I really like white fish and their Yellow Tail was delicious. But, easily the BEST thing I ate there was the Miso Black Cod. I know it's a play on a Nobu classic but I would give this dish of the year so far in my book. First and easily the most noticeable is how melty the fish was. It literally flakes at the poke of a chopstick and then proceeds to melt in your mouth. Secondly, the outside of the fillet (not sure what to refer to this part as but you can think of it like the perimeter) was deliciously crispy and charred. Third and finally, the miso flavor embedded into the fish as well as conveyed through the additional miso on the plate make this fish taste unbelievable. The perfect combination of savory, rich, and sweet. It's a small piece of fish at $22 and I split the dish amongst two friends so I only ended up eating like 4 total bites.
