    Kal-Bi and Korean Chicken
    MelissaAnne B.

Always looking to satisfy my Hawaiian food craving. This place was recommended to us. We were greeted with warm aloha when we entered the restaurant. Kalbi was flavorful and nicely charred. The Korean chicken is new to us flavor wise. We were expected a deep fried chicken with a sweet sticky Korean sauce. Instead it was gochujang based and surprisingly really good! The katsu was not up our alley it was dry and too thin for our liking. Mac salad was yummy. They also serve side of chili pepper water! Which was very salty though in our opinion. Not bad of a place. We might stop by again to try their sandwiches next time.

Great new find in my neighborhood. Always good to find good Hawaiian. The teriyaki chicken and short ribs were on point. The shoyu chicken had a bit of a unique taste. The macaroni salad was on point. I would definitely be back for another visit. Want to try some other items.

This is such a cute restaurant. I really liked the ambiance and colorful fish mural. I got a spam musubi and Mac salad here which ended up being around 10$. The spam musubi was great and I liked that it had egg in it. The Mac salad I didn't love though. It had carrots in it and pieces of egg. Was almost like a mix between egg salad and macaroni salad which I wasn't expecting. Although, it did have good flavor and tasted fresh. Maybe I'm just not used to this way of making it. I also like that they have a happy hour menu.

I love this place and it never misses! I always have to stop by when I'm in town. The Mac salad is the best. I got the kalua pig and Korean chicken and the pork was super moist. The Korean chicken is always delicious with the kimchi. My girlfriend got the tofu salad and she loved it as well. The service is usually good and fast but you do most of it yourself. It's always clean and a chill vibe and it's definitely one of my staples.

    Weak Katsu Chicken

Worst chicken katsu I've ever had. It was less than 1/4 inch think, soggy, stale, and like jerky. I see many other reviews with the same complaints. Check the food that comes out of your kitchen it's embarrassing. Will not be back

The kal bi ribs were mostly just bones and hardly any meat. The chicken was overcooked and dry and had a bit of a burnt plasticity flavor. Rice was super mushy:( quality has gone down over the years. I can't believe they get away with these recipes and have a business with such low vibrational food.

Chicken Katsu with macaroni salad and rice as two sides

I love this little eatery! The cashier was so friendly when we arrived here, which made us feel right at home. The process of ordering at Ate-Oh-Ate was easy. There was a chalkboard menu where we made our selection, ordered at the counter and paid, and then waited for our order and sat down to eat. The ambiance here is chill. There are plenty of rustic wooden tables to choose from for seating and cool table communal sauces to try. I shared a chicken katsu plate with two sides (macaroni and white rice) with my husband. The chicken katsu was cut thin and fried to crispy perfection! It was delicious and our food came out fast! I would highly recommend coming here.

I'm going to give them a yes to try. The service was really great. They were all very friendly, And willing to help. It's a little storefront that looks like it's been there for a while. It wasn't dirty, but definitely used... lol for whatever he used business looks like. I got the Katsu chicken lunch came with rice, and macaroni salad. I opted to get a side of gravy. I'm not being mean, but I probably should've not gotten that. It just needs a little more work. Everything else was delicious I don't eat everyone's macaroni salad, but this one was actually really good. The chicken cutlets were easy tender and cooked well. I would actually get that plate again, Just without the gravy and use Katsu sauce. I'm not sure if that is homemade or bought somewhere else, I really wasn't use to the vinegar taste, but it soon wore off the odd taste. I'm actually giving them a 3.5 stars because I feel the sauces would've made my lunch that much better. Tough parking area you may have to walk a little bit.

How I heard of this place: Visiting friends in Portland's Laurelhurst neighborhood, this was among the recommendations for places we could walk to from their home. We were given three or four options, and food from the Pacific Islands sounded most enticing. Type of cuisine: "Ate-Oh-Ate is a Hawaiian restaurant ...[w]ith a focus on delivering authentic Hawaiian-style food, Ate-Oh-Ate is dedicated to providing the finest and most delicious dishes possible. The restaurant group is composed of highly experienced culinary professionals who bring years of expertise to the table, ensuring that every dish is of the highest quality. At Ate-Oh-Ate, we use only the highest-quality ingredients in our dishes, including all-natural meats, fresh vegetables, and authentic products. We are dedicated to providing our guests with the best dining experience possible and take pride in offering food that's not only delicious but also nutritious." Ambiance: "In a warm and inviting family-friendly environment, guests can enjoy a variety of beers on draft or in bottles and cocktails, including our famous Mai Tai. Soak up some surf videos or catch the game on one of our TVs, all while enjoying the good musical vibes. ...and strive to provide a fun and relaxed atmosphere for everyone. At the Woodstock location, disc golf enthusiasts can also check out our selection of signature discs. We offer a variety of molds and plastics and are proud to support local tournaments. Open every day, Ate-Oh-Ate is available for dine-in and take-out. Come and experience the taste of Hawaii in Portland at Ate-Oh-Ate." What I ordered: My sister and I wanted to share, so I took her top two, Korean Chicken ($15.95) - grilled boneless thighs with sweet, spicy Korean chili sauce, served with kimchi; and Shoyu Chicken ($15.95) - boneless chicken thighs simmered in shoyu, brown sugar, ginger and star anise with a side of mac salad. I also indulged in a Frozen Limeade ($6). What I loved: The Korean Chicken was great, slightly spicy but still easy to swallow. The food overall lacked the punch of flavor that we are used to in Hawaiian cuisine, but the portions were plentiful and filled us up! Why I loved it: A cute space with character - concrete walls, chalkboard menus, wooden tables/chairs in the long space, exposed wood in the tall ceilings, and calming forest green walls with silhouetted tree paintings. Cost: Average

Fun island-grunge style atmosphere. The service was fantastic. When I asked the cashier what veggies come in the curry, she knew them by heart and rattled them off right away. The curry was really tasty. The fried rice was also very nice and flavorful. My only hold-backs where that the music was a bit louder than I was comfortable with, and the bathroom floors were so slick I almost fell on my face, though that might just be a me problem.

This place was a little disappointing. I'll say the katsu had a rubbery taste to it when you're chewing on it. The sauce was a little different compare to Hawaii. The Mac salad and rice was fine. My expectation was really high when we came to this spot but I guess I was disappointed. Maybe I should try something else or maybe not at all. I don't think I'll be returning to this place. The service was great. You order at the counter and then seat yourself. There's plenty of seats inside where you can sit. There's also a menu on the wall when you walk in so you can decide before going up to the counter to order.

Two bibimbaps to go: one was tofu and the other was spicy pork. Spicy pork is not spicy but looks like it is. Good taste, so it's marinated well and the meat isn't tough to chew, like some other places. I loved the spicy pork bibimbap though. All fresh ingredients! They give a lot of vegetables, which is so nice, because other places are very sparing with their ingredients. I'm usually left with so much rice at the end. However, this place did a good job giving the right amount of ingredients. They also gave a small cup of miso soup - thank you! Would get this again! My husband enjoyed his tofu version. If you're someone who wants spice, add some of the red sauce they give you in a cup. I was very happy the spicy pork wasn't spicy, but I liked being able to control any spice with the red sauce.

Location: This bar is on the first floor of the Hyatt House Portland / Downtown. Ambiance: Pretty quiet and chill. There weren't a lot of people there so it was really easy to get a drink. Drink options: I really loved how they circle around different local beer on tap. They also have a few bottled beer too. They have a cast amount of liquor too. Surprisingly, they had a new bottle of Hennessy when we finished the first (during our stay). Usually a lot of bars in hotels don't have it, so that was a major plus. Bartenders: We met three while we were there. All of them super kind, friendly, and informative of the surrounding area. They gave us lots of tips on what to see, eat, and drink. They were really down to earth people. Pricing: I thought it to be fairly reasonable for a hotel, however I might just be jaded from Bay Area pricing (yikes). What I loved about this bar is that we were able to just chat with the bartender. I didn't feel like I had to go back to my room with my drink (which is usually the case). I was able to talk to a few other people sitting at the bar too. Of course all from out of town, but still nice talking to other friendly strangers. They do serve food at this place, but I didn't really get a chance to try it it since there was soooo many other food joints in the area.
