I definitely recommend having a meal here. We were a large party of adults getting away from kids. We ordered mussels (the more basic one with white wine) and calamari to start. Both were very good. The frites did not arrive with the mussels, so the server brought a couple of bowls to make up for it. The frites were a very nice side dish, but missed with the mussels. Dinner was steak for me and my wife got a crab cake (app) and beet salad. The steak was cooked to the right temp. It was tasty and tender. My said the crab cake and the beet salad were very good. All of the drinks were good. A couple of drink orders had to be changed because the bar ran out of something, but our server quickly offered an alternative drink or receipe. Service was friendly and prompt. The timing between the apps and the dinner was well timed. I thought our server was overwhelmed, as he had tables outside and upstairs. Everything about this from the decor to the service and um the food?!? Where do I start?!? The blue point oysters were amazing! The Brussel Sprouts were simply the best I've ever had... super crispy but not burnt and just a hint of maple with (I think) pecorino.... yum, yum, YUM!! On to the main course... I was NOT planning on ordering the Lobster Roll but I couldn't resist and it was really delicious. Mayo based with fennel, vegs, lemon and lots of fresh pepper (added by server). My husband had the fish and chips which he was very pleased with. They both came with the best fries we've ever had... I don't normally eat the fries... these... I ate ALL of them. Then.... drumroll... dessert. Churros were to die. And the chocolate mousse... perfectly perfect... chocolatey, smooth, amazing whipped cream. My husband and I were in New Haven for a concert at College Street Music Hall and came across this beautiful, bright, welcoming spot. The social hour (much cooler way of saying happy hour) sign outside caught our eye, and we were pleased to see it was offered on the weekends. (Menu states the social hour is Tues-Sat 3-6 Pm, Sun all day!) The general manager Steph took great care of us at the bar. We tried the house red (a merlot; not usually our preferred red but she gave us a taste and it was pretty decent), a local beer, two glasses of house rose (a delicious French rose) and a dozen Blue Point oysters (2$ a piece on the social hour). It was a lovely place to spend a couple of hours! Very chill and relaxing vibe. The bar seating is comfortable and spacious, the restaurant is brightly lit, they played great music; for those that prefer outdoor seating there was a nice set-up out there as well. Excellent dinner experience all around. Ashley is an amazing waitress and went above and beyond in making us feel welcomed. I made a reservation, but upon arriving, found it to be unnecessary for a weekday evening. There were other diners, but the place was refreshingly quiet and great for conversation. Having taken a long time to order, Ashley was very accommodating and did not rush us. Excellent wine and cocktails. Shishito peppers are on the spicier end. I normally dislike brussel sprouts and find them to be uninspired. But I thoroughly enjoyed the ones served at Florian. They were very flavorful and a great app to start with. All the food was beautifully presented, and you can't go wrong trying the fish or steak tacos. This restaurant met all of my expectations and more. Its the perfect place to have a nice lunch or early dinner while on Yale's campus and get some quality food for a great price. At first, the Brussel sprouts were a little too overdone but our waitress took it back without a question and replaced them immediately. Really slow inattentive service (even with a half empty restaurant) and subpar food. The salmon was underwhelming and the kale strawberry salad was way too sweet. The calamari was rubbery not crispy and the Belgian frites were disappointingly soggy (forgotten about and brought out after the entrees even though they were ordered with the appetizers). The two stars are solely for the gnocchi with the bison bolognese which were soft and pillowy and delicious and the rosemary nightingale and absinthe something cocktails which were creative and tasty (the rosemary cocktail was brought out late halfway through entrees as well tho :( The atmosphere and interior was nice but everything else just brings down the whole experience. Not a good brunch place. Came here with my Yale friends who loves their lobster rolls. However, the lobster roll was not offered for weekend brunch so we opted for other things. She had mussels with red curry which tasted pretty good, and it came in a huge basket. The freshness was normal, neither too bad nor fresh. Their French fries was good. I got the western omelette, which was decent. However, when I added $4 extra for avocado I got extra three slices only. That was way too expensive considering the little amount. Won't recommend. We started strong with the butternut squash aranchini appetizer, and went downhill from there. The Belgian fries in the moules frites were soggy and the aioli tasted like it just came out of a Hellman's jar. The muscles themselves were rubbery and waterlogged. That was the theme of the squid ink seafood pasta as well. If youre going to use frozen seafood, at least make an attempt to drain and sear the product. If by chance I am mistaken and the seafood wasn't frozen, my apologies, but please find a way to make that dish taste like something. Dessert? The Belgian cheesecake was tasteless and the supposed cookie base was soggy, watery, and insulting. Not sure who is running the place now, but overall it was less than deluxe. Right off the bat walking into Florian, it felt like we were in France. The atmosphere call beautiful, everything was coordinated, and the staff was pleasant. Everything on the menu looked exquisite, we ordered the salmon dish and the tuna steak. Both dishes are made with sushi grade fish and can be cooked to order. I ordered my tuna medium and my boyfriend had his salmon rare, though we might suggest ordering those cook times inverse. However both dishes were excellent and I'll take a moment to commend the side of soba noodle salad that came with the tuna. The only reason we didn't get this place a five star rating is because of the service. While our waiter was fantastic, we were slow to be attended to for ordering and for anything else we needed. Next, my son ordered 2 eggs over easy, bacon, avocado and frites. Everything came out on a separate plate. Eggs were over cooked, bacon was under cooked and avocado was hard and unripe. Oh, and they forgot the frites. I ordered the "Gentleman's" waffle. A small waffle topped with 2 over easy over cooked eggs and 2 undercooked pieces of bacon and no syrup. When they finally did bring syrup it had no flavor at all! How does syrup have no flavor???! Stay far away from this place if you desire a good breakfast, cooked properly with good service. Yesterday Atelier Florian catered our annual holiday lunch party in our office. It was truly spectacular. Their manager had worked with me on all the details ahead of time but took such care in setting up the table with all the plates, cutlery, glasses, blue water bottles and big French napkins. They brought big chafing dishes to keep the food warm. We had chicken, salmon, pumpkin ravioli, Brussel sprouts, pear salad and pomme frites - all delicious. The two desserts - chocolate mousse and cheesecake- came with a huge bowl of whipped cream and hot fudge sauce. Coffee came with big French cups. They transformed our office conference room into an elegant, private meal. I highly recommend working with Stephanie and their crew who were cheerful and caring. They made our day. read more

I absolutely do not recommend Atelier Florian specifically because of my HORRIFIC experience at private events here. I have been to 2 separate privately-rented events in the upstairs area and during both events there have been repeated issues with "regulars" who come upstairs and crash. The first party I was at, 3 random dudes came upstairs and were harassing (enormously younger) women in attendance. The last event I went to, a "regular" came upstairs and physically assaulted someone, and the restaurant manager Stephany did nothing, in fact accompanying him when he came upstairs AGAIN to crash the event. It says a lot that both times I have been at this space it's been a shit show. This restaurant was by far one of the best surprises to come back to in New Haven.I live in Boston and always try to keep up on the restaurant circuit and always try to ensure where I'm going is somewhere unique, consistent, and you can sense that the business is putting 100% into their menu. I have to preface that I believe this place is better than what we experienced on our first visit. The good - our reservation was for 6:45 on a Saturday night and we were seated after a 5 minute wait. The restaurant was packed. Drink choices were good and we got those pretty quickly. The bad - our dinner dragged on because we waited so long for our food. It took roughly 45 minutes to get our appetizer which we shared. The grilled Spanish octopus was absolutely delicious but very small portion of only 3 pieces over veggies. Then came a long wait of another hour to get our entrees. We were seated near the kitchen so we could tell it was a bit crazy. I got my striped bass before my husband got his Provençal mussels 5 minutes later. My meal wasn't very hot and overall pretty bland. On the other hand, the mussels were flavorful and steaming hot when they got to the table. There were tons of mussels and cooked down veggies but the stock was almost non-existent in the pot. Despite the lack of stock, I would order that next time. Service was not that great, we didn't see our server between getting our drinks and then after our meal when we wanted the check. I really believe it's a good restaurant but we caught it on a really bad night and they were overwhelmed by the business. Wow what a place! So glad to be able to find an upscale seafood place in downtown New Haven. Although New Haven is so close to the sea, it's easy to forget it with how city-like it can be. But Atelier Florian reminds you of the fresh seafood you can have. The brussel sprouts appetizer is a must-have. They're perfectly crispy, cheesy, and sweetened by maple sugar. There's a full article on this recipe in the New Haven Independent from a few years back, and now that I've had them, I can see why. I had the seafood pasta, and some friends had the lobster roll, moules-frites provencale, and salmon burgers. The seafood pasta was quite honestly exemplary. The sauce was a simple butter sauce, and it really allowed all the flavors of the various seafood in the dish to shine through -- the salmon, calamari, mussels, and clams. I could honestly talk about how flaky the salmon was for days -- I was initially hesitant about having salmon in a pasta dish but the restaurant proved me wrong. I would go back to have their salmon entree having tasted how well they can cook salmon. The only downside to the dish is that there were some rocky portions of the clams, so it would be nice if the chefs did a better job cleaning the seafood. Friends were happy with their entrees as well, and the moules-frites portion is especially generous. Complementary chocolate mousse was served following the meal, which is nice. Service overall was excellent, and we didn't feel rushed at all. Would certainly recommend this place for a nice night out. read more

Wish there was a 3-1/2 star option, but opted for the 4. First off let me say that the food is phenomenal, it is the quality of service that makes this place less than perfect. We had reservations on Valentine's Day. We arrived on time and were told our table was being set and that we could have a seat in the bar while we wait. We opted to do that and grab a drink. Almost 30 mins later we were still waiting, only to be approached by the hostess asking if we were another party. Upon my boyfriend giving his name she said "Oh we have been looking for you." Right there strike one in my book. The place isn't that big. We got seated and our server was very polite. It was a pre-fixed menu (which btw was not available on the website prior to making reservations) and we ordered all courses up front, in addition to a bottle of wine and clams from the raw bar. Bottle of wine came, properly presented, as did the clams. But here is where things went awry. Our apps never came and we were served dinner. However, I was not brought the right dinner and I believe what happened was we were served the dinner meant for the table next to us. They changed out my dinner and shortly there after the manger came over. She apologized and offered to take off the cost of our appetizers, which was $24, but still offered to bring them to us after we finished our dinner. Honestly I was pretty excited for my app so I asked that we get them after our dinner. We did and they were great. We then got our desserts, but were informed that the crème brûlée that my boyfriend ordered was no longer available so he had to choose something else. Upon getting our dessert we were served a complementary dessert drink. To finish off the night we were then brought the dinner bill only to find it did not have the deduction of the $24 we were promised. My boyfriend did not want to make a scene so he let it slide, I however was not pleased and am now writing this review. I was presented with a rose by the manager before leaving, which was a nice touch. All in all, great food. Came here for dinner with a friend who cannot have milk products, cannot have anything spicy, and cannot eat beef. Despite these restrictions, we were able to have a delightful dinner! We got a crab cakes and pot of mussels to share, which comes with shoe string fries, and to my delight, they weren't as thin as they usually are.
