After seeing all the reviews, my husband and I thought we will try them while visiting the area. This is a no frill restaurant. Decor was tired, old and not inviting at all. Prices were high for the portions served. We ordered 2 appetizers. The fried Calamari was very small. It did come with an interesting dipping sauce that was very spicy. I would have expected double the size for $12. 2nd appetizer was the stuffed grape leaves. I sent them back since they were the same thing I can get out of a can and probably was the same. It was cold, no meat in it and sour. Hubby opted for the Gyro sandwich with fries for $12 and it was mediocre with just a handful of fries. I got the Gyro platter and I had mixed feelings about it. The meat was enough with a side salad on the plate with 2 olives, plenty of feta and a few other things like a few pieces of bell pepper and 2 slices of tomato. about 2 spoons of rice pilaf. It was tasty but way over priced for $17. I asked them if they had Kataifi for dessert and our waiter said, no not tonight. It was Saturday night at 6pm when we ate there. Since we sent the dolmades back due to disappointment we were not spoken to after we paid our bill. No thank you, have a nice evening. NOTHING. Do yourself a favor. Don't go there. read more

Recently, my friends and I went there as we had several times before. I myself have been there many times and noticed lately that the quality of food has definitely gone down hill. On this evening we ordered the tzatziki sauce with pita bread and it definitely was not as good as it usually is. We then ordered the fried calamari and for $12 it was a disgrace what they gave us. There were about 10 calamari on the plate. I mentioned to the waiter who is always very rude and uninterested anyway, that for the price we were expecting more and also the tzatziki tasted different and his response to us was "get out". Then the mother came out and I said is this how you treat your customers and she said "you are not customers". It was embarrassing and unfortunate how they treated us, and we were regular customers! Needless to say we won't be back. They have the attitude that they are doing people a favor. No, we the customers are doing you a favor by going there. Bottom line food is not as good as it used to be and service is the worst I have ever experienced anywhere. When you treat your customers like crap you lose them. We were all in disbelief. read more

We enjoyed our dinner here last week. Authentic Greek food cooked by a husband and wife that play Greek music in the kitchen. We had the sampler for an appetizer. The hummus, eggplant and feta cheese was a meal in its own and was delicious. I had the seasoned chicken and it was very good. My wife had a grilled chicken salad which she enjoyed. I don't remember what the kids had but they said it was good. Service was a little slow, but it was nice not to be rushed. It is a BYOB so don't forget the wine. read more

I never had Greek food before but decided to start living life in all aspects. A friend took me here and I wasn't expecting much. I didn't even know what Greek food was. I was really impressed with the food.we got an appetizer , the gyro platter and some shrimp and rice dish, followed by baklava.it was all great! Really love this place. The food is delicious and authentic. My grandmother has been coming here for years and sent me to pick up take-out food one day. The owner remembered her and took really good care of us. She even picked out some figs from the garden to send home to my grandmother. The spanikopita, chicken gyro, and baklavah was all so delicious. They are extremely friendly. I will definitely bring others here when I am in town. read more

Food is great here, just not the service. Me and my boyfriend walked in the restaurant and were patiently waiting for someone to seat us. Someone from the kitchen even saw us but didn't tell the host or waiter that we were waiting. After 4 minutes, the waiter finally sat us down, handed us menus, asked us what we wanted to drink but forgot my boyfriend's soda. I understand that people can forget and feel rushed but this night was basically empty. They only had one other table besides us. I wanted more napkins and water but the waiter did not once ask if we needed anything. I say definitely come here for the food just expect unexceptional service. read more

I've been coming here for years and keep coming back because it is amazing authentic food. Definitely get the hummus and if you order falafel be prepared because they are gigantic! Service is generally prompt but they do get busy at lunch. I have not been at dinner but I believe they have a different menu. read more

I love this place. The owners are friendly and welcoming. Try everything or anything on the menu they get everything just right. They have the best hummus you'll ever taste at a Greek restaurant. My favorite is off course the lamb gyro. read more

While staying in southern Jersey for a family vacation, my boyfriend and I decided to venture out one day for lunch and we happened to stumble upon this place as it was right down the road from where we were staying. The decor definitely had a rustic, small town feel as most of the furnishings were made out of wood and looked like you were going to visit your grandparents, which is an appropriate assumption as it was apparent an old Greek woman was in the kitchen preparing the food. Our waiter, who appeared to be the son of the owners was very friendly and welcoming, which is always a plus especially when you're an out-of-towner. We started off which spanakopita which was by far the best spanakonita I have yet to have. It oozed of freshness and was flaky and crisp. I did not get the impression it was just thrown in the microwave and heated up. I would have been happy with merely a plate of this! For my lunch entree I got the lamb kofte which is ground lamb cooked in a kebab shape and wrapped in a pita with the usual lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and tzatiki sauce. The lamb kofte was moist, and tickled my palate with the levels of flavor it presented. It was not over seasoned though nor was it too salty. It had the perfect balance of everything one would expect from a Greek dishI also ordered a side salad which tasted so fresh and flavorful considering it was only a salad. I wish this place was in New York rather than in Jersey! I'd definitely be coming to visit more often. read more

I don't know what happened to this restaurant, but this last experience will mean I'll never go there again. The lamb came out HARD to CHEW and flavorless. The potatoes were dry and without flavor. Like you nuked a leftover potato the next day- dry and no flavor. The grilled calamari (special order) tasted like lemon juice and was cooked inconsistently, the taste covered up with the lemon juice. I was trying to carry on as I was with a group, but about half way through, I just couldn't. I told the waiter it was terrible, did they have something quick? He said I already ate half of it, and then a women came over and said the same thing. Like I was trying to get over on them. No concern about the food, and really, I'd have been happy to pay for something else. (No fuss, the party.) I've eaten all over the world and in the last 50 years, I don't recall ever sending anything back, other than well done instead of medium rare. I have eaten there before, but I was appalled at my treatment. I just paid the bill and left the party. read more

We visit Smithville every year for Oktoberfest. During our visit we always make sure to stop in at Athenian Gardens Restaurant for dinner. I will not take away from their food. Although pricey & small portioned, it is delicious and authentic. Their service is a whole other ball game. They took our reservation for 8 PM but when we got there, told us that the kitchen closed promptly at 8:30, leaving us no time to really order. We managed to get a quick order in and felt extremely rushed. Not only did we feel rushed, but we had to smell Pine-Sol being mopped all around us. After paying the bill for $200 and change, we then kindly and politely explain to the owner and his wife, that for the future, when someone makes a reservation for 8 PM, you should kindly tell them over the phone that the kitchen closes at 8:30 PM. The owner proceeded to ask us what we were looking for? We explained that we were not looking for anything, and that we actually paid the bill before saying anything purposely so he didn't think we were looking for a discount. We were just explaining that we were not local, so we did not know the time restriction. The owner proceeded to say, if you don't like it don't come back. Shame on him and his wife for treating customers this way. Between their costly menu, small portions, rude service and empty dining room, it's a wonder they're still open. I don't care how delicious and authentic the food is, their behavior is disgraceful. There is a lovely little Greek eatery in the town of Historic Smithville. Although it does not have the same decor, I can assure you that the food is just as delicious and the people there are extremely polite and the service is much better and so are the prices and portions. I had the worst customer service experience. We had take out, everything was wonderful until we got to the baklava. Not only was it visibly Burnt but tasted horrific! When I took it back to the restaurant I said I was surprised that they even served it,The female owner offered a replacement or money back but then I was told by the male owner that he thought it was "edible". read more

I recently moved to Absecon, & on my way home from the Garden State Parkway on many occasion I pass by this restaurant. On a night that i wanted something different, my daughter & I went to Athenian Garden. We were very pleased with our choices. Choosing the falafel platter as an appetizer was a great choice. Even though we're not very familiar with Greek food, our server was most helpful in describing the food. Most notable is the warmth of the the staff in not being overbearing, but giving just the right attention. We'll be back, & bring our friends. read more

Awesome authentic Greek! Best I've had on the east coast from Boston to Tarpon Springs. They have an organic garden and all the veggies for salads are from the garden. Lamb dishes and grilled whole fish have always been on point. The prices are very reasonable for the high quality and consistency. Grilled Octopus, Sweet Breads and Rabbit Stew...
