Ok first of all let's forget, just for a moment, that this is a bike shop, which of course it is in the truest sense of the word. But let's put that aside. I don't care what this cat is selling, because I am buying. This is the kind of place kids used to hang out at after school and learn millions of things that make good business men and women, but really teaches knowledge based customer service t way retail used to be. Could be a skate shop, a surf shop, a garage or in my case when I was kid, a musused record store. I've seen this guy interact with kids, and whoever wrote that his ego is too big, I assure you that is not ego, that is a pompous bs detector and it must have been going haywire the second whoever you are looking for your spoke torque wench and your I can't even tell wtf kind of lock, took one step in his shop. This is a down to earth man who knows his sh*t and treats kids with more respect than 99% of adults. This is the kind of place you WANT your kids to hang out in. Now the shop. Ahhhh it's an f'n mess, just like all the best mechanic garages are all over the world. His hands have grease on them and he gives it swipe with a shop rag, before shaking your hand and looking you in the eye. I just needed some parts, I've been working on bikes since I was a kid, the two places I went before stumbling onto Atomic when my wife wanted to split a salad across the street at the humble bee (also a great small business) no idea who she was planning on splitting it with...anyway the other shops told me I couldn't install a rear derailer properly and if I got the part there I would just be bringing it back after I brake it. Bye. At Atomic not only sold me the part straight up, but went over a couple places I might have a little trouble and how to deal with it. Never once tried to up sell me to a repair. Here's where he got a customer for life. This is a tough time for small businesses, maybe some of the toughest. I asked him how his business was doing, and instead of the usual list of totally legitimate complaints, he said.. "Business is great, I love what I do, I make a fair profit, I'm lucky to get a lot of repairs, I put on events for kids all year" gesturing at a calendar on the wall with a bunch of stuff and little posters, "I'm a lucky man." I deal with Paul whenever I can. This means that I drive from VENTURA to Van Nuys when I need bike work/repairs done that I can't do myself. Nobody does as good a job for as little money, and I appreciate his "first come, first served" labor policy - no other job gets put in front of yours just because it's making more money or because somebody is screaming that they're in a rush. No, you won't find many new bikes there (he carries a few inexpensive cruisers during the Summer), but if you need old parts replaced or repaired, Atomic Cycles is THE shop. We'd walked our bikes to Atomic -- 2.1 miles, from the edge of the park, because we'd gotten 3 flat tires between the two of us, riding through some nettles. I'd called en route to ask whether they repair flats, was told yes, and said that we'd be walking over. When we arrived, many blocks later, guy said he had a bunch of repairs in front of us and might not get to flats until *tomorrow.* I said, but please, we're stranded! We live 7 miles from here! With complete indifference, (I think he shrugged and mad dawgged me), the guy said, well, tough. Other people came first, it's first come first served, that's only fair. Yeah. So there is such a thing as triage. It's what ERs do, so that the person with the sprained ankle does have to wait a little longer, if somebody in anaphylactic shock needs to see the doctor first. This is not unfair; it's logical. When I am the person with the sprained ankle (or who'd dropped off my bike and driven home by car, to retrieve it later), I understand that it's important for people who have objectively greater urgencies (no other means of transportation and problems getting home that day) to be folded into the queue. So fine. There are people too simple-minded to hold more than one principle ("first in first out!") in their heads at a time. Trying to balance multiple criteria fries the circuits. Unfortunately, this shop is run by one of them, and he doesn't give a crap about you. If you have options, don't go here. read more

Cool, neighborhood shop. I did my on-line due diligence and in the end brought my old mtn bike to Atomic Cycles for a tune-up. Brake & shifter cables, chain, grips and paint were in serious need of attention after having sat in a garage for many years. I'm a casual rider at best and I'm sure that came as no surprise to Paul after spending just a few minutes speaking with me. I felt more like I walked into a old garage asking for free help. He said he would call when bike was ready in a hour or 2, he didn't. the guy is cheaper than craigslist and ebay. Oh and he only sells used bikes so this place is awesome for someone like me who is shopping on a budget. I got very lucky and landed myself a hybrid bike for 95 bucks. I asked for bar ends he added it for 5 bucks with installation. So the Good - Its cheap - They sell used parts on everything so its cheap. - Guy is friendly and lets you test ride your bikes which is a big plus because you can't do that at alot of these bike shops. The Bad - Everything is used so if you are looking for new this is not the place. umn... yeah what else is bad... humn... the place is pretty dusty and small. Atomic cycles is a flash back in time. Paul, the owner of Atomic, serves a specific part of the bike world that is truly under served. He sells quality used bikes, vintage bikes, and some specialty parts for bmx bikes. That's it! No frills. No fancy shop etc. He does a very good job of managing the fluctuations in his volume especially considering he is a one man operation. He also puts on a lot of very fun bike events. Atomic is worth checking out If you need a quality repair on standard bicycle. Atomic is a great place to get a good pre-owned bike or that unique vintage part. I'm a fan. I check the reviews before driving down from Granada Hills, and it was exactly what I expected. The owner is an expert and knows bikes. I brought my wife's and son's bikes in for tune-ups and he very honestly told me that my son's bike really didn't need one, but that he would "check it out." My wife's bike was a bit more complicated, but the whole tune-up was done in an hour, and I'll definitely go back when my bike's need more TLC. read more

What a joke! $20 for I forgot what it was he did and than he tells me I have no brakes because we hadn't "discussed that". I know nothing about bikes except how to ride one. So I said "I can't ride my bike?" to his response "well you can but you'll have no brakes". I ask "can you fix it, I'd like to ride my bike" his response was you'll have to wait I've got more customers". Mind you I was the first customer of the day. Left because he said it would be an hour. I returned and now I couldn't ride my bike and if I wanted him to fix the brake I'd have to wait and was going to be charged again. My friend who was with me and knew a little about bikes just popped the wire into place right outside his shop and wouldn't you know I had functioning brakes. It took like 10 seconds I'm not even exaggerating. As a first time customer you'd think he would of done that as a Common courtesy. The worst customer service I've ever experienced! read more

Very small shop, great service, down to earth guy, more than reasonable prices. The time and energy he put on my bike, wow speechless. He even fixed (bent back) my derailleur that got stuck between the spokes, from a DH track. He gave my breaks the attention they needed, it works like a dream on the mountain and off. I bought an unassembled bike... trying to build it myself I almost pulled my hair out! So I yelped for a place near my house. I called a bike place and they quoted me $60. Thinking they are out of their minds I called Atomic cycles after reading thier great yelp reviews. Paul was friendly on the phone and quoted me $20! SOLD!! I rushed over and he had it done for me within an hour! He even gave me a bike lesson and fitted me because I haven't been on a bike since I was a kid. I also bought a new lock from him! Let me first reply to a previous review. You shouldn't have to "get used" to customer service - nor should you have to get used to being ripped off. I did not have much knowledge about bicycles at the time and stupidly bought a bike from this shop. As time went on i found myself upgrading ALL of the hardware and the junk he sold me went into the trash. This guy really took me for a ride and made a good couple hundred off of a poor college student. When I pass by this shop I feel sick thinking about how people like this own businesses. A friend recommended this place, and according to other reviews, it seems the shop owner does very good work. I won't find out firsthand, though. I walked in hoping to buy just a basic bike, and when I said that, the shop owner, who was already angry for some reason, told me he didn't have many left, and that the bikes outside (numerous bikes are chained in front of the shop) are high-end vintage bikes and repairs. As I tried to clarify whether "repairs" meant bikes he's repaired and were for sale, or other customers' repairs, he fumed that that the vintage bikes were to the RIGHT outside, and the repairs, which, he said he HOPED people would pick up, are to the LEFT. Okay. Got it. Considering world, national and local events, this man is probably overwhelmed, in several ways. Like all of us. All the more reason to lead with compassion, or at least civility. I'll head for a shop where my desire to buy a bike won't infuriate the shop's owner. read more
