This place is a hidden gem. The exterior looks a bit dated, but don't be fooled. Inside you will find an interior that is modern, and awesome food at very reasonable prices. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and will address your every need. They have specials that rotate daily, my favorite being the swordfish. My go-to item on their menu is the veal saltimboca, absolutely fabulous. Their sausage lentil soup is the best I've ever had, and I'll buy a quart when it's available. I've been going here religiously for 15 years. I've lived in RI till I was 24, and have moved to CT since. I still make the drive into Johnston monthly to enjoy the Atwood Grille. read more

I've seen the other reviews and will mention that yes, a couple of times the service was a bit slow and it's true about the hostess. Not the most congenial woman I've encountered, but no big deal. Probably the worst dining experience I have ever had. I came here with friends about 4 months ago and things went well. Tonight, however, was a disaster. After we were seated we waited for 20 minutes before someone came to take a drink order and another 10 minutes to receive a draft beer and a glass of wine. The waitress, who had been assigned tables all over the restaurant eventually came to take our order. After another 1/2 hour, our food arrived. My friend ordered the Alaskan King Crab Legs which were on the specials menu. Unfortunately, this dish was inedible because the crab legs were baked to the point where they were black on the ends. In fact, I can not even imagine that a chef would think that that's how you would cook such a dish! Needless to say, my friend sent this back, choosing to eat just her side of pasta. This, too was awful! Unfortunately, our waitress was a lovely person but we didn't see her again until she gave us the check. Having been a server myself in the past, I would have at least offered dessert or even another glass of wine to my friend, on the house. Overall you will get a good value for your money, but do not expect good service. The food is always excellent, but the service most often is slow, inconsistent and frankly lousy. Most times I've eaten here, which is frequently, the waitress will not introduce herself, fails to check up on us, vanishes for long periods of time and is in no rush to serve us. On two recent trips the waitress forgot to bring our salads and gave a slight attitude when we asked about them. On one of these trips when I finally got my salad it had the wrong dressing on it. My most recent trip was a dinner with a total of two guests and though we were seated at 4pm, we did not leave until after 6pm... It should no take that long for two entrees and 1 appetizer, there was no rush on the staff to serve us quickly... Overall you can't beat the value, you get a great meal at a decent price, but you must be willing to sit for a long time. read more

I love the food. The waitresses are pleasant to me and my boyfriend because we frequently go there to eat in the dining room and play keno. I don't like how close the bar is to the dining area because the clicky regulars can get roudy and loud at times. My biggest complaint is how rude the main bartender, Gina is. It seems as if you're an inconvenience if you aren't sitting at the bar and leaving her a tip. She's super nice to her regulars though... But she couldn't care less to make an impression on new clientele. When you play keno, you have to pay her and she just throws your tickets down as if you are a bother. As a regular customer I feel I deserve a little more respect even when I'm not sitting at the bar. Patricia, the waitress on the other hand is a sweetheart, and always aims to please, I recommend her! So the food is great... Waitresses are pleasant, but the bar and it's main bartender could use a change. read more

I spend summers in the area and visit this restaurant at least once a season.This year I was taking my husband for fathers day and was rudely turned away being told they were closed before their posted closing time and with a full parking lot. The food here is usually very good, but the service does not match the quality of the meals they serve. The prices for the food online does not match what the prices of the food are in the restaurant, showing a lack of preparation and foresight. In addition to this, when asking the manager about the different prices, she became very short and incredibly rude, hanging up on us when we asked to remove an item that was incorrectly priced online. I would not recommend eating here unless one has a high tolerance for poor customer service and dreadful demeanors from the serving staff. read more

The eggplant parm is absolutely AMAZING! The marinara sauce that accompanies it is delicious. Order it family sized to-go and you'll get a tray that easily feeds 8-10 and will last all week (perfect for bringing to parties!) The bread that comes with it is great for making little eggplant sandwiches- and the veggie sides round out the meal nicely. I recommend the roasted potatoes because the other mashed veggie sides were a little bland - and the string beans seemed to be from a can and were too mushy. Have not tried the corn. The pasta is also on the mushy side- they seem to over cook it- so I would skip the pasta dishes- but the eggplant makes it all worth it! I would never make homemade eggplant again when they do such a fantastic job.. My husband and daughter also really enjoy their scrod italiano and very highly recommend it. Very friendly staff. recent visit resulted in one of the worst dining experiences. Looking forward to a pleasant Friday night dinner with my cousin, who came from oot of town but turned out to be the dinner from hell. The server was unprofessional with a poor disposition. It seemed like an effort to serve us. The "filet mignon" (if that's what it was) was grissly and unedible. We told the waitress, and she didn't say anything. When she returned several minutes later, she just whisked away the plate acting annoyed. When the bill came, the full amount for the dinner was there. We asked nicely to have the bill changed which led to unresponsivness from the server and rudeness from the manager. Will never return. Not a very welcoming atmosphere. Practically got reprimanded in front of entire bar area by some rude bartender when we moved a chair over to the bar area. There's a way of talking to patrons. Then the whole bar was in a tizzy because again the bartender rudely told us we couldn't sit there we didn't know there was a line for seating at the bar! How this place is still in business is beyond me. My husband and I drive by all the time and decided to stop in for lunch one day. I wish I would have read the yelp reviews and kept it moving, but I was so hungry I didn't even think about it. We walk in and everyone is 80+ years old, that's the first sign that the food was going to suck. We sat at the bar and grabbed a couple of drinks and looked over the menu. The food sounded good for a lunch menu, so I went ahead and ordered one of my favorites, Calamari Naples (calamari with balsamic reduction, tomatoes and hot peppers). My husband ordered a steak sandwich with fries. My husband eats just about anything and he did choke it down with his beer but when I asked him how it was, he said eh, kinda boring. The calamari was pretty disappointing as well, there was no zip to it. Their patrons are old as hell so they probably enjoy the blandness, I was hungry so I ate about half and turned down the to go box when I was finally offered one. The wait staff/bartender couldn't care less that we were even sitting there, it was one of those I'm only tipping your ass because I have to moments. The service here is terrible! The waitresses I have had were miserable, not friendly, mean, and very slow! The food is very expensive and just average! Do not understand why the parking lot is so full! Last time I went there had to wait at least 1 hour for meal and they kept saying it is comming! PLEASE AVOID IF YOU HAVE A FOOD ALLERGY!!! My family and I dined at the Atwood Grill for my parent's 45th Anniversary. It was a very special day for all of us and we hoped to relax, enjoy a good meal, each other's company, and to celebrate them! Unfortunately, things did not go anywhere near what we planned. I have a gluten/wheat allergy and take a lot of care in choosing where we dine and what I order. When reservations were made at the Atwood Grill it was specifically asked if they would be able to accommodate a guest with gluten allergies, we were given a definitive yes and told that the chef would be able to adjust just about anything. Awesome, right... NOPE, not so fast. When we arrived on Sunday evening, before being seated, I asked if there was a gluten free menu and was told again I could order anything I wanted and the waitress and chef would be sure to discuss any changes that would need to be made with me. Once seat, we ordered appetizers, where I again stated my allergy and ordered the snail salad. I carefully chose a meal on the menu that seemed to be void of gluten/wheat, I asked the waitress if she thought it would be safe and stated my allergy again. She read through it out loud and assured me there was no gluten (no gluten also means no wheat), it would be perfect. Our meals came and everything looked delicious, I happily dug in, within 15m I started to feel a minor reaction but just thought there could have been some mild cross-contamination. We left the restaurant and I didn't want to create an issue because, again, this was a very special day for our family and I didn't want to tarnish it. Unfortunately, by the time I got home I was having trouble breathing and my throat was swelling. I spent 5hrs in the emergency room in full Anaphylaxis and will be home and on additional meds for the next 4 days. My children and family were so worried and frightened, and my level of reaction is now likely much greater because of this. Please Please Please do not eat here if you have any food allergies. And, Atwood Grill, please properly train your staff... food allergies are not a joke and need to be understood and treated with care. If you can't do that then please don't assure your patrons that you can. My reaction was very serious but things could have gone even worse. read more

We even had a larger function here and their banquet menu was great, the amount of food you get is unbelievable, especially for the price you pay!! Always loved this restaurant. We followed it from Warwick (closed) to Johnston. The worst MGR ever in a restaurant after our surprise that when you order a kids meal for $5.00 nothing comes w/it. When our bill came, $3.00 was for an 7 0z kids apple juice, NOT refillable. Soda is refillable however children pay adult prices??? When I asked the server, she just passed the complaint to the most uneducation young women MGR. Kids meal usually come with drinks/fruit/ice cream. Atwwod Grill is not kid friendly. NO crayons, very unfriendly workers. Just a bunch of drunks at the bar. Vinny should be in his restaurant more often or soon he might close this one too. PS... this restaurant alwaaaaays has nickle & dimed the customers. Now doing it to children. Vinny should be ashamed of himself. I've been here quite a few times but hadn't been in about 7-8 months. The service has always been slow. I was the first one in for lunch and it took almost 1 1/2 hours. they said the system was down and it never happens but the last time it happened was 7-8 months ago and had to pay cash. Besides the service is slow, I did like the Salmon I ordered. it was tasty. Normally I order all Italian which is good. The bread is great that they service you with meal. the mashed potato and mixed vegetables were very bland with not much taste and placed together on a very small plate. I would maybe see if you could get pasta. Not in a hurry to go back because of the service issue but food was for the most part good. read more

Went there with my wife and daughter on August 14. We hadn't been there in many years. Big disappointment! We eat out frequently, and we got stuck with the worst waitress every. After being seated we waited 10 minutes for her to arrive, hand us menus, and said "I'll be right back" and disappeared. Another 10 minutes went by before she stopped by to ask if we wanted something to drink. The women asked for lemon in their water, but the water arrived with nothing. She disappeared again for another 10 minutes before she came back and asked if we were ready to order. We ordered an appetizer: 3 "spicy" stuff quahogs. Don't bother! They tasted like they had been made three days earlier, and had been reheated three times already. They were dried out and tasteless. Some time later she returned to take our diner orders. We should have left after the quahogs. The three meals were bland and tasteless. I guess they don't use seasoning so it appeals to more people? All the time we were there, we saw diners at other tables constantly searching for a waitress who seemed to disappear for long periods. It took us 1 hr, 40 minutes to get through a bland meal with terrible service. Never again. read more

Took my elderly Mom yesterday (Sunday). They sat us in the first booth opposite the door, so we were subjected to all the comings and goings of patrons and staff, not to mention the breeze that hit my Mom every time the door opened. But, my bad for letting them put us there and not immediately asking for a different spot. Our waiter was fine, polite and prompt until it came time to get the check, then we sat waiting a bit. Salads came quickly, house dressing was good, but the ingredients included soft (old?) cherry tomato (1 per plate) and nasty end pieces of the lettuce parts. Due to lactose intolerance and fish allergy, my Mom ended up getting the Chicken with Vegetables. Be forewarned; the chicken and vegetables are grilled whole and served that way. I didn't see that on the menu. I had to literally cut up everything on the plate except the rice so my Mom, who has dentures, could manage to eat some. Other than that, her dish was fine, with a nice balsamic reduction on the side. I had the Eggplant Rollatini with a side of fettucine with marinara sauce. The eggplant roll was great, but the sauce was a little acidic and not very flavorful. The pasta was not well drained and not very hot. So overall, I'd have to say, basic place for a quick bite, nice booths, generous portions, limited menu, especially for a person with allergies, and the food we had was only about 2 stars. Friends have told me they love this place, but I'm not sure it's worth going back. read more

This place isn't totally perfect, its just really really close. But the remarkable thing is its been that way for years and years. Very occasionally you'll get something you're not that nuts about. More often you'll get something great that feels like good basic italian american food. And then sometimes you get something surprisingly awesome. The red sauce is good, the calamari is great, the service is always homey and friendly even if occasionally they are just over worked. The lunch specials are cheap and delicious. My best friend and I went to the Atwood Grill today for lunch. We have been dining at the Grill for over 14 years, and will ALWAYS continue to have lunch and or dinner there. "Patricia", is normally our waitress, and you cannot find a better, personable, friendly waitress, then she is! She is never in a hurry and explains everything you ask her about what is on the menu. The food is delicious, we had the pesto cream penne/with grilled chicken, and the eggplant/ricotta ravioli's, very, very tasty!! We also had stuffies for an appetizer. I am shocked after reading some of these negative reviews, it is OBVIOUS, they do not know what great italian food is!! You can go to some of the finest restaurants and they don't always have the greatest of foods.
