This plus a drink is their "lunch special"
Andy L.

I was starving yesterday and decided to get take-out from this place for the first time. Got the "lunch special" of one choice of meat and one side with a drink for $12.50. When I received my order, it was noticeably light, and I really should have checked it before it left, but I was carrying a lot of other things and just wanted to get home and eat. Imagine my disappointment and pure disdain for this joke of a "lunch special" when I got home and saw the two to three ounces of chicken and small container of stuffing I was given. See photo. I mixed the chicken and stuffing together here just to have some semblance of a decent-sized meal. BBQ sauce container included for scale. Chicken was fine and the stuffing was pretty average. Lemonade was very artificial in taste. Need to reiterate the minuscule portions. Will never eat here again. It's pretty telling too that this place is empty most of the time. I probably would never had eaten here if I weren't so hungry. This happened yesterday and I am still mad about it. I spent the same amount at Chiptole and got three times the amount of food, if not more.

Had a delightful time in here on an otherwise dreary day. It was my first time seeing my nonagenarian MIL in a year, and she chose this place. Turns out she's a regular. The staff all go out of their way to treat her like a treasured family member. Food was excellent! The ribs were fall-off-the+bone tender, and the Mac & cheese was delicious. My daughter had the crab cake sandwich and said it was great. We sat & talked for quite some time & staff made sure we had everything we needed. I'm sure we'll be visiting more often & will be sure to come back here.

"We were surprised to see Oklahoma Style BBQ here in the Upper West Side. It was our first time trying Oklahoma Style BBQ so ordered from here a couple of times! First thing first, Their Oklahoma BBQ Pork Ribs with a side of mac and cheese and cornbread. The ribs were tasty! We loved the dry rub and the meat come off the bone easily, super tender and flavorful. As for the BBQ sauce, it was a lot tangier for sure! But overall worth it! The Tulsa BBQ Pulled Pork was also delicious! It was served on a brioche roll with pickled red onions, coleslaw & BBQ sauce. It was a flavorful sandwich and they gave a wonderful amount of meat. We also ordered their Oklahoma Hot Links Sandwich. Now this one was served on a Hawaiian sweet roll, smoked, hot n' spicy beef sausage with melted sharp cheddar cheese, chicharrones, baby arugula, and chipotle sweet pepper mayo. The cheese in this sandwich just melts so beautifully with the combination of the heat from the beef sausage is perfection. Very hot and spicy, worth the mouth burn. Not to make this review too long, but the crabcake sandwich was also good, a little small - more of a light snack but good! Lastly, their Homemade Crème Brûlée is well made! great when you are craving a decent price Crème Brûlée. Overall, will come back again and again!"

You're Pretty Good Looking (for a Girl) - The White Stripes I had to start this review with a musical reference in imitation of my Yelp friend, Dan R. of Simsbury -- because that was my mental soundtrack as we sampled our way through this meal: Au Jus makes pretty good barbecue (for New York). It's evidently a mini chain with a few locations around the city and it distinguishes itself from the competition as a purveyor of Oklahoma style barbecue (a lesser known style than South Carolina, St. Louis, East / West / North / South Texas, etc...). All barbecued meat from Au Jus comes unsauced, which bbq snobs often regard as a pre-requisite for legit barbecue. Three sauces were sent on the side with our delivery order, none of which had more than a hint of heat: a sweet, mild, mustard-laced "Carolina gold" style sauce; a darker, more vinegary sauce; and a sweeter, mild brown sauce. Portion sizes were surprisingly normal -- as in they fall somewhere between the enormous, southern-sized portions that could feed an entire family of New Yorkers, and the delicate, diminutive portion sizes one often finds at NYC Michelin-starred restaurants. Platters come with two sides. Here's the blow-by-blow: The Oklahoma BBQ Pork Ribs Platter ($16.95) included four ribs, which had a winning smokiness and an unusually moist, fall-off-the-bone texture. Less winning: the huge amount of fat that was left on the meat. My favorite (non-Oklahoma-style) bbq places trim or slow cook much more of that fat off. It's possible that the higher ratio of fat is deliberate in Oklahoma-style barbecue to preserve moisture. (Barbecue aficionados, feel free to weigh in.) Beef Short Ribs Platter ($16.95) included three boneless ribs, which shared the same flaw as their porky cousins: The thick vein of fat running through the meat was excessive and unappetizing, and difficult to eat around. There was less smoke flavor than in the beef ribs, but flavors were straightforward and excellent, the texture pliant, but not wimpy. Tulsa pulled pork ($15.95) was moist and tender, happily not too overtly fatty. It was moistened with an oily jus (justifying the restaurant's name, I guess!). The pork was enjoyable, but not too different from what you might make in your own slow cooker at home. Some of the sides were quite presentable. I REALLY liked the sauteed kale and the smoked gouda mac 'n' cheese was probably made from scratch. Stuffing was, as I think Deborah P. noted, pretty basic (devoid of nice veggie mix-ins). "Southern" cornbread was no such thing; this was as Yankee a version of cornbread as you can find, sweet and fluffy. (Only noting in case someone is outraged by such mislabeling. Some southerners are very attached to their cornpone.) Cole slaw was standard issue. Would not personally get again: 1. The "Vermonter" sandwich read nicely on paper -- I'm a sucker for apples on sandwiches -- but the execution (75% bread, 25% filling) was a fail. Actually, make that 10% mayonnaise filling; 15% turkey and apples. I tolerate mayonnaise when I have to; the copious amounts used here drowned out the taste of every other ingredient. 2. The Oklahoma Red Chili was bonk-you-over-the-head salty and tasted a little bit to me like it was made with a McCormick chili seasoning packet. It was all meat (or almost all meat), so may be particularly enjoyable for those who don't do beans in their chili. 3. An order of chicken tortilla soup contained far more solids than liquid, so if you enjoy your soup as something more akin to a stew, this is for you. I personally prefer soupy soup with a lot of broth, but that's just me. Flavors were enjoyable -- no complaints, there. When it comes to NYC barbecue, my heart still belongs to Mighty Quinn's -- but it's nice to have Au Jus filling its niche market for Oklahoma style 'cue, especially since there's a location within delivery distance for me. Hope they keep at it.

Half BBQ chicken

Got take out here on a Tuesday night at 7 pm. The establishment was completely empty with the exception of a few take out orders. There's some indoor seating and a really cute outdoor patio/street seating area. Got the half BBQ chicken with chili and cornbread stuffing. Great value for the money and everything was so carefully packaged. Chicken was fall off the bone soft, perfectly juicy and tender. The chili was a little more on the salty side for me but contained a healthy dose of meat. I would return again for one of those nights where they have live music playing.

Roast beef
Jonathan C.

The roast beef made me cry. Unfortunately, I was not please with the presentation nor the portion of food that came with the roast beef. The chicken platter on the hand was definitely the better option. The portions size for that was enough to fill me up and it was cheaper than the roast beef. The 2 chili sides tasted pretty much the same and were particularly on the saltier side.

They also serve beer and wine, which I wasn't expecting. This location has both indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice. The setup is mostly DIY since you throw away your own garbage and etc. But they do bring your food and drinks out to you. They also have a restroom for customers and a self serve tap water station with glasses, which I appreciated. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich. It was alright, but I do think it could've used a little more flavor or seasoning.

It's funny: I despaired showing up at the business, seeing the limited parking, but when I was in front of the restaurant, another gentleman was there and said "just park there" --- ???? ---- turned out to be the owner! I got parking right in the front. These sandwiches have been on my feed for a long time, and each video I see they all look so amazing. I had to go with the moost-popular: the Jiu Jitsu Sandwich ($18.5). This sandwich has --- lemme see: "Thinly Sliced Steak Seasoned In Homemade Chimichurri With Caramelized Onions Topped With Extra Chimichurri". I MEAN. This was a grown-up, bougie, international millennial sandwich of the 2020's. This hit and THEN SOME. Totally recommend. To accompany, I ordered some tater-tots; nothing to write home about, but they complimented the sandwich very well. I am a sucker for a good steak + chimichurri combo, and this sandwich hit.the.spot. The inside of the restaurant is decent. Luckily, I ate at the window-side, but since it is a very popular business (from what I can tell), seating is very limited. It's a very limited space; I do see many people picking up "to-go orders". However, if you get the chance to dine-in...DO IT. Nothing will beat the freshness of the first bite of that Jiu Jitsu Sandwich. Overall, 5/5. This place has deserved the HYPE and the ATTENTION!

Day 2, I only purchased 2 items, as the other items I returned to purchase weren't in stock. You can see I checked out at 7:17 & they close at 7:30. Got home and 1 of the TWO items I purchased was not in the Zabar's bag. I call tonight, explained to the manager what happened, and that I only bought two items. The manager tells me to "bring the receipt in so we can track the item". What kind of customer service is this? Your cashier is busy chatting with her colleague about store closing, doesn't put both items in the bag, and now I have to pay MORE money to get back uptown, so you can "track the ($4) item"??? NOPE. The day before this, I spent over $150, not a single item missing. I recommend that you watch them like hawks as they ring your items and make sure everything makes it in the bag. I posted a photo of both receipts, side by side, Dec 15th & Dec 16th, to verify this. It's sad that an actual manager thinks this is acceptable customer service. That said, I will say that I had such warm, friendly, and competent service from Destini L on Dec. 15th. Perhaps Destini L. would be a better candidate than the manager who took my phone call tonight (Dec 17th).
