We got 1lb moist brisket and 1/2 lb rib. The brisket was very very rich. The taste was excellent and the smoke was very prevalent 8.5/10. Ribs were dry. I think out was sitting out or something 6/10. We got Mac N Cheese which had crushed Chicharróns on the top. The Mac n Chesse was very creamy. 9.6/10 The inside is small but luckily we found a seat. They have a large sitting area outside but it was 98 degrees. We also got pork belly which was very good. 9/10. And the pinto beans were great. Had excellent flavor. 10/10. Def would try this place again for the Dino rib. Overall great BBQ. 8.9/10

I think I order way too much food, if there is such a thing - but the leftovers didn't last long from home either. We got there early on a late Thursday morning - pretty much front of the line. That's a true tip - fellow Yelper's have said the line is out the door, get there early. Thursday mornings is a slower day. The dining area was already full. Since it was a rainy day, nobody was sitting outside. On the menu this visit was the pork plate... which comes with servings of pulled pork and pork ribs. I was in heaven... I also got the chicharroni (macaroni and topped with chicharron flakes). Liz tried the nopal, and after trying it I was thinking I should have gotten that instead. They always have creative sides. We had enough food to take home and enjoy seconds. So, if you can't take the food, try hard not to be greedy. The service was friendly and efficient, I wish I had enough stomach to try everything. I don't, not at this age... but I do have every intention of coming back.

They should add some covered area where the line is from the birds & weather. So glad we got in for waiting like 20/30 mins in line. They ran out of the jalapeño cheese sausage. The pulled pork and brisket was yummy too! Everything was amazing! Also love that you can order by the slice! Every place should do that!

We arrived around 5pm on a Thursday and got in queue which was out the door and wrapping around the front porch. Their host/doorman was kind, he offered the line water on many occasions and made pleasantries with almost all guests as the line moved. It was a hot day so those waters were clutch. By the time we made it to the front of order line maybe 40 minutes had passed. But ladies and gents the wait is worth it. When we plated our trays on the table my family all had heart eyes, and had equally loved our first bites. Their brisket is extremely tender. It's beautifully sliced and made for an amazing welcome back to the South taste for me. I was in heaven. I particularly enjoyed having the fresh pickled red onion for fresh, zesty cuts through the abundance of other saltier elements on the plate. Their menu is slammin! Their sides, and sausages all had crafty ingredients. I enjoyed their spicy link options and their macaroni was delightful. Their BBQ sauce was a nice 4/5 but certainly did the job. As a native Texan who's had their fair share, this was easily some of the best barbecue I've ever had. Top 5 top 5 top 5. I'm of course coming back and looking forward for more banana cream pudding especially. They were small, slightly sweet, and had great balance with the vanilla wafer ratio. That whip cream on top too had me hooked. I couldn't have asked for a better welcome back meal for the bold Texas cuisine, hospitality, and novelty animal and cowboy decor.

I didn't need extra fat from avocado after the corn cakes since it doesn't add much flavor to the dish. The corn cakes are good and I will order again but not as good as some other cornbread. It came with 2 cakes. One was undercooked and one has a crispy crust. The undercooked one was my favorite. It is more moist with soft in the middle. Tuna Al Pastor has a kick but nothing special. Tres Leches was beautiful. 4/5. I like the fresh fruits to cut down the sweetness. The cake was a bit in the dense side. The icing on top was thick. I wish it was a fluffy whip cream to cut down from all the sweetness. Overall it's still a better tres leches than other places in the area.

Great BBQ Before or After Sightseeing…read more Smoke Shack has become one of our go to spots whenever we have guests visiting. It is the perfect stop after showing friends and family the Alamo and the River Walk before heading back home. Just be prepared for a line because every time we have gone, there is usually one. It moves, but it is definitely part of the experience. Our go to items are always the lip smacking brisket. We order a pound of regular and a quarter pound of lean. Both are tender and flavorful. The ribs and sausage are also solid choices. For sides, we rotate between the well seasoned green beans, mac and cheese, beans and okra. All of them are excellent and you really cannot go wrong. Side note. I am not a fan of their corn. I prefer corn that leans sweet rather than spicy, so it is not my favorite. Next time I go, I already know what I want to try. Either the Brisket Sandy or the Brisket Grilled Cheese. Both look incredible. Smoke Shack is always a reliable stop for good Texas BBQ and a great place to bring visitors for an authentic taste of San Antonio.

Restaurant: Smoke Shack Ordered:…read more* Brisket sandwich * Potato salad A-List Take: The brisket had good flavor, but it seemed to be seared or reheated before serving. I personally prefer brisket that's freshly sliced without being cooked again. I was also surprised that additional brisket slices cost $0.50 each. The potato salad had plenty of ingredients, but it wasn't my favorite. My biggest concern was that it was cool rather than cold, which made me question whether it was being kept chilled enough. A-List Verdict: Brisket had flavor. Extra charge for slices was unexpected. Potato salad temperature was disappointing. A-List Rating: (3/5) The BBQ had potential, but the reheated brisket and lukewarm potato salad kept this one from making my A-List. Until next bite... this is A-List, keeping it deliciously honest.

So my wife and I are in San Antonio for a few months and we decided to visit all the Yelp places in San Antonio that made the top 100 for Texas. There are seven of them, and Nelson's BBQ (#21) was the last one on the list for us. I call on Saturday after I get off of work to just ask him if he's still got food left and I find out that his hours are kind of non-standard. He typically takes orders and gets food ready as the orders come in but he's not at his food truck all the time. That was a little bit different for me but he was very accommodating and willing to make his schedule work with mine and get our order done as soon as he could. It did take about 2.5 weeks until it finally worked out but the food was delicious. The timing and communication could've been a little bit better but Mr. Nelson was working hard and really trying to get as much done as possible. Needless to say, the food was delicious. We tried the nasty Nate (our favorite), the Mac n cheese which was delicious, pulled pork (very good), sausage (thought it was going to be a little better), ribs (good), cornbread (very good). The best dish was the nasty Nate and the cornbread but the sausage was disappointing. Still, overall 5 stars for the meal. The wait was a little excessive I thought but I definitely recommend checking his place out if it works out for you because the food was really good! Overall: 4.5 stars

This was by far the worst barbecue I've ever had in quite some time from the beans being straight out of a can to the ribs being mushy with no pull. The brisket was beautiful to look at that extremely tough to the bite. The potato salad is the lone one star I gave this place although it lacked a lot of ingredients it was homemade. All these 4 1/2 star reviews boggle my mind. Maybe we went on a wrong day. I don't know, but there was several people there that were waiting for a long time to receive their orders also They don't have a dining area just some simple chairs sit outside between the parking spots. Enjoy.

3 Stars -- Good for the Zoo Crowd, Not for True Texas BBQ Fans…read moreLet me start by saying my three stars are strictly for the food -- not the location, not the vibe. Augie's is a solid convenience spot if you're spending the day at the Zoo or Brackenridge Park. Think of it as the Texas BBQ equivalent of good food inside Disneyland: it's not great, but for where you are, it'll do the job. As for the BBQ itself... nothing really stands out. The brisket was bland and barely warm, and most of the sides were cold. The place wasn't even busy -- just my table of five and another small group -- so that didn't help justify the temperature or quality issues. The jalapeño cheese sausage was the one bright spot, packing a decent kick and some real flavor. Portions and utensils felt a little stingy -- you'll probably snap a fork trying to dig into anything, and if you ask for extra sauce, expect a tiny salsa-sized cup. On the positive side, the staff was friendly and the setting is great. You get nice views of the driving range and can catch the Brackenridge Park train rolling by, which gives the place a relaxed, local feel. Final Take: Would I recommend this place as a true Texas BBQ destination? Absolutely not -- you'll find better brisket at Buc-ee's or Rudy's. But if you're already at the park or zoo and need something quick and convenient, it's a fine spot to grab a bite and keep your day moving
